Let's just remind everyone that there will be swears- Yeah ... and there will be spoils. Cris: Yes, there will be Sidey: definitely. We forgot to say that the last few times. But that- Yeah ... does tend to happen. Dan: God, that'd scare people, wouldn't it? Sidey: Yeah, it would do a bit. Yeah Dan: bit. Yeah ... in for a nice, pleasant family podcast Cris: and- Well, it is a family podcast, but we do have the odd, Dan: your family swears- Yeah ... they're all grown up. You Sidey: Some little kid just told me that spells were shit about Dan: Yeah. That's true. That's true. But that's... They teach that in schools Sidey: now. Yeah, it's a part of the- Cris: the Sidey: of these are gonna be- Part of the curriculum, Dan: Yeah ... hold back. Sidey: Have you watched much this week, Dan? I don't think you have, have you? I, I Dan: watched a film today actually called Laura which is a, a film noir- Right ... Sidey: right Dan: back in the day, an Oscar winner. Sidey: It Dan: was with Gene Tierney. And it was about a girl who'd been killed, Laura, and the, the murderer and a detective trying to find out who did it with all the people around. And it turns out actually she's not dead. And she comes back into it, and he's sleuthing Sidey: around- Told you there'd be spoilers. Yeah ... to find different Dan: scenarios and, and the people who, who might have actually done the murder with all her friends. So watched that. And then not a lot else other than just Universal Soldier, which we did for the Midweeker. Yeah. Van Damme. Bit of Van Damme content. You Sidey: because- You can't go wrong, yeah Dan: you go into the YouTube of Van Damme he did that commercial where he did the splits- Sidey: on the, between the lorry ... Dan: between the lorries Cris: Oh yeah, the Bud Light. Dan: Yeah. Yeah. A- and yeah, that was it really. Okay. Not much else. Sidey: What about you, Chris? Cris: I've watched a few episodes of a series called The Son, which is a Western- Right With Pierce Brosnan.Sidey: Okay. It's a Dan: a Cris: drama Western thing. I do like a Western, and i- it's, it's... I, I generally quite like this, and it, it is set in the 1700s or something. So, so it's quite nice, and it's, it's on two kind of- timelines, let's say, where Pierce Brosnan character's Eli McCullough gets kidnapped at 13 by the Comanches who kill his family. Right. And then when he's in his 70s, so, so it's the parallel- Right ... story by when he was at, with the Comanches and how he grows up with them to become this ruthless businessman. Right. And now as he's in Texas, he's born on the same day as Texas, as Texas was invented or whatever, or Texas- Right ... got his Sidey: Texas- Right ... was independent. Yeah. And Cris: he now turns 70 or something, and he owns land, and he's got oil on the land, but he's trying to invest, to get people to invest in his Sidey: f- seek, Cris: for oil and all that. And- Right ... it, it's kind of those parallel stories, the son. Sidey: What's it on? Cris: The Naughty Box Sidey: Oh, Cris: It's-- I think it's an HBO production Sidey: Oh, right. Okay. Cris: The only problem is I, I actually quite like Pierce Brosnan, and I... Especially in "Mob Land," I really liked him because he plays an Irishman who is a gangster or whatever, and, and that suits him very well because that's what he is in real life, right? He's a, he's a- Gangster ... British... No, he's a British man, right? Yeah. Sidey: Yeah. Cris: this one, when he's, when he's from Texas, the accent doesn't really Sidey: Oh, okay. Cris: really work. So, so when... I, I, I like... Half of the battle for me is f- with these Westerns is when the l- the accent and the language is proper- Yeah ... American South- Yeah that kind of style. And everyone else in the film has it but him, and it's, it, it's, it's interesting so far. I watched about three episodes, and I've watched about five or six episodes of "X-Men '97." Sidey: Really? Yeah. Why? Cris: I just remember watching it as a kid, and I rem- I remember I used to like the, the X-Men- Maybe that was the- the Sidey: X-Men characters. Okay. I wouldn't have imagined it was something you'd be into. Cris: reason that it's something you did then. Not necessarily '97. Sidey: weird how they just... Well, it's not weird. It's, it's interesting that they've done the same style, you know, to go back to how it was, you know? Yeah. Was, yeah. Whi- Cris: w- which again, I, I kinda, and I, I'm... So I watched these in parallel, l- let's say. Not because I wanted. It's because more nostalgia for the X-Men. Yeah. And this one because I like a, a Western. It's a bit of a slow burn in the first three episodes, so I don't know how much I'm gonna... It's, there's two seasons, so I'll probably give it a go for the first season because it's still- Yeah ... interesting, and then I'll probably bin it off. So that's it. I haven't watched anything else, and I've been working, so I didn't really have time for anything else. The football's back as well, Dan: so ... so a bit of Pierce Brosnan stuff then you've watched this week, 'cause obviously your film Giant. Or did you get to watch that Cris: didn't watch it, Dan: Ah, so the, the film that Sidey: we- He's back to being Irish in this. Oh, Cris: he? Okay. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've, I'm s- I, I feel bad for not watching it, but I honestly didn't have time. I, I I do like, And I've seen the sto- the, the film before, "The Giant," the Princeton theme story, and I, I actually... I'm probably gonna watch it, but I just didn't have time Dan: listen to our review and see what you, you think of it. What about yourself, Tyde? Sidey: I've been- Have you been seeing anything ... yeah, I've been back into the series Barry. Why? Which is, he, Barry's a hitman, but he joins an acting class. It's really good. It's really, really good. So I've watched about three or four episodes of that this week. And then I... This morning I was watching and really enjoying The Whisper Man or The Whispering Man. Okay. It's a brand new one, I think. It's on Netflix. It is stars- De Niro? ... De Niro, and the lady who I can never ever remember the name of, but she plays Cris: I think. It's on Netflix. It is stars- De Niro. De Niro. And the lady who I can never ever remember the name of, but she plays Sidey: Ethan's wife in the Mission Impossible series- Right and she was in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. She's the current detective, so, so there's a serial killer who there's a... And he has a sort of rhyme where he whispering, "Turn up at your door," tapping on your window, blah, blah. And he, in the past, he'd killed five boys, and there's always the same thing where he takes their T-shirt and wraps it around their head, strangles them because he doesn't want them to watch him or s- Right look at them while he's killing them. Dan: them to watch him or s- Right ... look Sidey: And then it starts to happen again while the guy's in prison. And De Niro had caught him the first time round, and so she goes to see De Niro again. So- So it were a Dan: or they never got the right guy Sidey: They had a theory at the time. Now he definitely did the first ones, but De Niro had a theory at the time that he had an accomplice. Okay. But yeah, that was shot down. But now that it's happening again... So that's where I'm at in the film, where there's, there's been two more kills. Well, one kill and a boy is missing. Okay. And he records the... He sends... He records them interviewing them on his little tape, and he sends that to the family every time it's twisted. The film is, like, pretty generic fucking shit, but it's really like- Yeah ... those things you can just watch, you know. So yeah, we've been watching that and that's about it. Chris and I watched the football, which is great for Chris, but fucking shit for me because he won- Yeah ... and I didn't. Other than that, that's, that's really been it. Dan: it. That's it? Okay. The one that instantly came to my mind was The Iron Giant. Yeah. The, the cartoon with the funky kind of jazz soundtrack to it as well. Really like that. It's, it's, Sidey: hanks involved in this? Dan: involved in this? In that... He may have done. He may have been. It's that long, long ago, to be honest, but, Sidey: a Brad Bird movie, isn't it? N- Dan: yeah, 1999. And it was Vin Diesel who did the the voice of- Right ... the mechanicals' deep voice. But yeah, it was, it would, you know, bring a bit of a, a tear to the eye really because this big friendly iron giant was just misunderstood until a little kid kind of finds him and he, he befriends him. A, a, a classic cartoon. Yeah, that will kick off my giant. Sidey: Nice. Chris? Cris: I have, There's a Romanian act- Well, he was a t- actually a basketball player. He's not a r- I've, I've mentioned this film before. There's a film with Billy Crystal, which Sidey: obviously we all love, so- Oh, yes. Yeah, Cris: of. And i-i- it's a film that's called My Giant. Yeah. And it's with Billy Crystal and Ghita Muresan Sidey: The real guy, wasn't it? Cris: A real guy, isn't it? Sidey: He- as in it was Cris: And it was the- He was a guy from Romania that was a basketball player. Dan: Yeah. Ah, yes. And, Yeah, I know who you mean ... Billy Crystal ... And then he ended up being found i- his kind of place a- as being the, the giant in a circus in this, in this film. Right. And I think it was that, that same- Cris: It could be. It could Dan: Could be ... that same actor. Sidey: We watched and enjoyed the movie The Princess Bride for the pod. Yeah. Which features Fezzik- Oh, yeah who's a kind of reluctant to fight giant. I think he was in, like, excruciating pain, wasn't he, throughout the whole Dan: he did, like, Sidey: shooting match? Well, Cris: 120 Sidey: he did, like, 120 beers Dan: which will give anybody excruciating pain, I would imagine. Sidey: Was a big dude. A really- A real big dude Dan: big dude ... a really- You're a big dude ... really Sidey: huge guy. And it was his wrestling name, you know, Andre the Giant. He was, he was a unit. Yeah. Yeah. There's a- A cult, Cris: cult hero from, for Sidey: s- us, Dan: or from people- Yeah Cris: Yeah ... when... Because he was, he was a gigantic man, but he was actually a nice person by all accounts. Dan: Yeah. But- Sidey: Yeah. But Fezzik, we, we like that. Dan: was a great movie. The BFG- Yeah ... is, is another one. Now I'm talking about the c- the cartoon Sidey: The animated one, yeah. Dan: rather than the one that they made a few years ago with the, the live anime. I don't know who did that. Sidey: I wanna say it was a Spielberg thing. Dan: a- Might've been Spielberg ... yeah, it might have been Spielberg, but it wasn't very good. I, I- Cris: I remember seeing the trailer and seeing the poster for it. Yeah. I never had any interest o- o- of watching that, if I'm being honest. Dan: was, yeah. It was, you know, it's obviously a Roald Dahl classic. This big kind of friendly giant, the BFG and a, and a young orphan get to- together and go on their adventures. It was Spielberg. He doesn't get many wrong but this was a bit of a turkey- Yeah ... for me. But the cartoon was fantastic, and the book of course Roald Dahl, so many of his- Wasn't it all around taking kids' dreams? And yeah, there was a, there was like, Sidey: store them up in jars, Dan: was st- that's right. But he was, he was friendly. There was dream- Yeah Sidey: it's in his name, innit? ... giant creatures and... Dan: yes, exactly. Sidey: But there's some ones later on in the movie that are real bastards. Dan: bastards. Yeah. Yeah, some scaries. Yeah. Cris: There's a bunch of them that are kinda piled up in the same universe that we did when we had the, the week of Godzilla and Kong and all that. They're- MonsterVerse ... MonsterVerse, yeah. They're the ones where you have... Basically you have Godzilla, you have, Sidey: king Kong Cris: King Kong ... King Kong. You have the Hydra kinda Sidey: King Cris: G- yeah, that thing. There, there're all these Sidey: super-sized- Mothra Cris: Rodan ... the... Dan: Rodan. Cris: Yes, all, all the... The giant rat, the giant... You know, all these- Yeah, all, all these giant kind of- Sidey: Titans ... yeah. Yeah. Titans. Yeah. Cris: Titanoboa, all that kinda stuff. Yeah. Dan: He's at the z- he was at the zoo, Titanoboa. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. In Lego Sidey: Nice. Which was Dan: Which is pretty impressive Cris: pretty... Yeah, some- for something that actually existed. So they're all... I, I, I'm not gonna just mention one. They're all kinda in the same... They're more movies than one- Yeah but they're all kind of the same giants- Yeah ... in, in film really. Sidey: Yeah, of course, they're a classic. Yes. Yeah. It starts off as a sort of the villain of the piece just 'cause he's fucking destroying everything in his path, and later on they come to rely on him to, Cris: to- To help against all the Sidey: king of the monsters, to fight the other ones off, yeah. Cris: that. I have to say though it- it- I was... I can't remember who I was speaking to the other week, and we were, we were talking, maybe it was Kira about the, the first kind of global superstars, right? Like before the internet, you would have Maradona, you have Michael Jackson, you would have maybe Elvis, where if you go to a village in Africa- Sidey: Oh, like The Beatles, Cris: The Beatles. Be- like s- These between... Of all these in, in the space of, let's say, 20 years, in the... From the '60s to late '80s, you would have all these- Dan: The Queen Cris: The Queen. Yeah. You, you would have Sidey: all these- Cris: all these... It would be a global superstar for whatever reason, would be sports or acting or whatever. And me, God- I, I said Godzilla, and I think Kira was looking at me like, "Godzilla? But that's not real." I was like, "It doesn't matter," because in... Even in communist Romania- Sidey: Yeah Cris: people would've known what Godzilla is, or they would've seen a film, or there, there would've been something- Yeah Sidey: Uh-huh. Yeah Cris: out of the... Out, out of that. Whereas- Sidey: It's the monoculture 'cause there was only so many channels where you could find stuff. So if something was popular enough to go across those, then everyone would know about it. Now, that song recently that's... Probably heard it without knowing what it is, but you just like, there's just so many ways to hear things or watch things that things just don't catch on in the same way. Okay. And yet things still get really popular. But like you say, yeah, it was in those Cris: That was the... Yeah. Sidey: buy an album full of- Once things got famous, everyone knew about it. Cris: And because there was, what, two radio stations- Yeah ... in every country, or one. You know, there was the news and the music one, and that was it. TV stations, two, three channels. Yeah. Five for you guys that were the Western world. We had two, and it was Ceaușescu all the time. Dan: Yeah. Cris: You don't see anything else. So, so those were the, the first global ones. So I... That, that's probably a good shout, I would say. Well, something else that Sidey: something else that was really, really popular globally, I would say, was Game of Thrones- Yeah ... and there was giants in that. Wun Wun was one Cris: Wun was Sidey: of them, and Wun Wun, and Mag the Mighty, and they were big fuckers and handy in a battle Dan: The... I was about to say, was that towards the end when they're fighting at- No, they're in it ... at the Wall or, or Sidey: were in it because what was quite handy was for them to be part of the earlier battles and then to die and to be resurrected by the, The fucking dark- Oh, Dan: wa- White Walkers yes, and Sidey: the, yes. And then, so then they become- Yeah ... a zombified giant, so you got to Dan: Frightening. Sidey: yeah. Cris: Did you both watch the whole Game of Dan: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I've only watched it, like, once, and I, I was getting drip-fed progr- Sidey: I got sucked Cris: those Dan: of those things- Oh, you were waiting on- We, we were Cris: Tuesdays or whatever. Dan: waiting the next episode to come out ... dun, dun, dun. Yeah. Yeah, and the music and all sorts, Cris: of- I've n- I've never watched it, so I don't, I don't know anything. Dan: that was, Cris: I've heard of Mother of the Dragons. So, so good for- I've Sidey: so good for- I've heard of the Cris: White people Sidey: whatever. Yeah. 80% - And Cris: know of what you guys are saying, and Pete and that, but- Sidey: yeah ... 80% of it is really, really like top tier, and then basically they all had been doing it for so long they wanted to do other stuff, so they signed off to like move on. And they also went, they went beyond where the books were. Right, okay. So they didn't have the source material, and it just kind of fell off a cliff. They had all this lore and all these strands of the story that they'd built out and, you know, where's that gonna go? And they just had to like fuck all of that off and just end it basically. And so the ending wasn't great, and it makes... I would, I would re-watch it, but n- but knowing that it just doesn't end very well, it's like I can't be bothered. Whereas Pete's watched it I think like three or four times through. He doesn't care. Right, okay. Dan: just to get Yeah. Yeah, I'd watch it again again one day. Cris: How many series? How many sorry, seasons? Sidey: sort of seasons? Seven or eight. Yeah. Seven, eight seasons? I'd... Yeah. Yeah. Dan: a big commitment. Yeah. But actually the first season just on its own is, it, it is very good. I, I would, I'd watch it again. I mean, there's just people where you think, "Oh, they'll definitely be in it next." Poof, they're gone. Yeah. You know, it's just wiped out. And it was brutal like that, just the way they finished off the- Yeah ... the main characters and everything. I've got a, a slightly off offbeat one. It's the giant foot in Monty Python's- Oh, nice ... and the, and the Holy Grail. You know the big foot that just comes- Yeah ... down in the title animation sequence and he just squashes, like, characters from above. Yeah. I thought that'd be a good one. Sidey: The Dan: one that we haven't mentioned, but I'd be surprised if people aren't shouting a- at this saying, "You've got to put that one in," Ghostbusters. Sidey: Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Dan: Man. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Yeah, yeah. Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. He's just that huge, towering monster of pure sugar with the smile and the little sailor's cap as he marches through New York Sidey: with his, his Dan: with his, his weird eyes and everything size of buildings. And eventually gooey white stuff is just everywhere apart from on Bill Murray. Right at the end, he's got, like, a little bit on his nose or something, Sidey: not having Dan: it? Yeah. Just right there. There you go. Sidey: Yeah. Cris: Yeah. Dan: A, a, good one Sidey: Very nice. Cris: I've got from a film that I've watched recently and I watched it with my parents, which I've mentioned maybe or I haven't. I don't think I've been back here since I've been to Romania, or maybe I have. I watched The Odyssey in IMAX in Romania with my parents. And did I tell you this that I watched it with my mom and dad and we went to the- Sidey: Oh, you did, yeah, because then you said your dad was like, "Well, we'll go every Cris: but we-" Did Sidey: Yeah. He said to my mom, honestly, he said to my mom that this is amazing because he's got a hearing thing- Yeah like a hearing aid, Dan: yeah. Sidey: In the IMAX Cris: do Sidey: need that. Dan: No, right. It's- Sidey: So, there's no need for that, and you understand everything. Dan: you do the 4Max one where it's, Sidey: It Cris: They don't have the, the 4Max, but it, it's still Sidey: Top tier stuff Cris: good. It's awesome still. It's, And, and we, we were not at the back, back seats, but we were kinda like you don't have to look up or down. You're just like straight out. Yeah. It was, it was brilliant, honestly. And it's a massive hall, like, the, the whole Dan: thing. Yeah. I've Sidey: done IMAX. I need to do it, Cris: it was so good, honestly. And I said to Sadie, like my dad was... said to my mom after we got home. And it's a three hour and, and a bit film, right? Yeah. And for them to- Sidey: Yeah. Sit Dan: down ... they're in their- For any of us to sit down three and- ... 40s and 70s ... yeah ... right? And Sidey: sit down for it, Cris: right? Yeah. And f- both of them were like, "That was incredible." And my dad was like, "You know what we should do? We should go there more often." He's like, "Well, we should go once a month." Not once a week, but he's Sidey: like- Yeah Cris: once a month. Because my mom knows the, her ways with the internet. My dad's like, his phone is still the one with the buttons. Dan: Okay, Cris: And he doesn't... Yeah, he's a 76-year-old man. He doesn't care. And he's like, "You should look next month what's on, and we go together. That's Dan: Oh, that's Cris: And he's like, "Oh, but if we go there, can we pay there? Because I don't know how to book it on- Yeah, yeah ... online." I said, "Yeah, you just go there and you pay there. It's gonna be fine." And honestly, he was buzzing as well. It was so good. But in The Odyssey, which is, I have to say, if you haven't watched it, I highly recommend Dan: it's a good movie Cris: because it's, it's good. There's- Dan: it at the cinema. There's not many films that get me going to the cinema, especially because it's got back- Cris: that. Yeah, yeah ... but Dan: this is designed, meant, and, you know, better- Cris: In the cinema with these kind of epics that Christopher Nolan does ... Yeah. Dan: epics that Christopher Nolan Cris: And I don't wanna, I don't wanna sound horrible. It's, it's one of them that we, we've all seen films that have high budgets, high expectations- Mm-hmm ... great cast, and you're a bit Dan: like- And don't deliver. Mm. Yeah. I'm like, Cris: It's like Whereas this one was good. And there's a couple of giants because obviously this is Greek mythology- Yeah and, and this is, you know, well documented. I can't remember the swords people. The crusader people looking with the armors where they're fucking massive- Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah ... when they go, and they see the kid that the si- is the size of a human. Dan: Yeah. But it was- Adult, yeah ... yeah, Cris: then he's just a kid. He's just like a 8 year old, but he's the size of them. He Sidey: screams, Dan: doesn't he? And they're all- Yeah ... yeah, Sidey: But Cris: the giant Polyphemus- Sidey: Polyphemus, Cris: is the Cyclops Prometheus' son- Yeah ... which keeps them in the cave, and they stab in the eye. Dan: He's no need to go back in to, to get him really, is he? But you know, they, they've escaped essentially, but he's, 'cause he's Cris: because he's killed some of their men- Because he's killed some of their men. Cris: honestly, it's it's just like straight the s- the hair on your arm just goes up. Yeah. It's, it's... They've done it really well on that one. Sidey: Cool. Dan: Right. Sidey: The main feature of Giant Week- Yeah ... is Giant. Is the movie Giant It's Dan: the movie Giant Sidey: it's a biopic. Dan: The UK's answer to Rocky. Although boxing fans will have heard of Prince Naseem who was an absolutely devastating fighter. We s- Sidey: we see some black and white recreated footage of him, of the guy playing Naseem fighting, and he does look the part in his sort of heyday. And then we go back in time to the mean streets of Sheffield, and it's a party going on in the, in the gym itself, it... where the boxing gym, that is, where Pierce Brosnan, Brendan Ingle's character is, is sort of DJing this party. And some kids like starting to have a rumble. There's kids going around spiking all the drinks. Yeah. And then there's the local sort of reverend dude, isn't it, who comes in- Dan: the, the vicar who- ... who's saying, "You know, you're getting them off the streets, but look, this is, this is chaos in here." But he's very relaxed. He sees these two young lads having, Sidey: having a ding-dong aren't they, and he says, "Right- Dan: "Come on into the ring." And brings them in there. And then gets, Sidey: And this is his MO basically Yeah He, he takes kids off the streets and he teaches them not how, not just how to fight, but how, how actually to behave, how to be disciplined, how to, you know, be productive and f- get some fitness and learn some life lessons. In one scene, he, he demonstrates the life lessons by, by, in front of this reporter by asking the kids like, "What did, who did you used to hate?" And he's like, "Pakis- Yeah ... and Black people." Right. And he's like, "And now who do you hate?" He's like- No one ... "No one." He's like, "There you go, see?" Dan: go." "See, this is life skills. This is it. We're teaching them respect and everything." And yeah, against the sort of backdrop of this, It's Sidey: It's the National Front and all that sort of horrible shit going Dan: horrible bastards. There's this young family, Sidey: Well, he nips out to the shop, doesn't he? Yeah. I think his wife sends him out to the shop to get a pint of milk or whatever it is, and he sees two skinheads, Spraying ... spray-painting National Front graffiti on the shop. And the Pakistani lady there is- Well, she, she's Yemeni actually Yemeni, yeah. Yeah. She can't do anything, but he sort of basically makes them scuttle off, and they shout at him and be his bad, but he's like, "Listen, fuck off." And then he goes into shop and he says, "Look, I just want a pint of milk," you know. And she's like, "Oh, would you..." He, he's obviously known around the town- Yeah. Yeah. Well-known ... for, he's well-known for looking after the kids. And she says, "Look, I've got three youngsters. Would you be able to train them?" And I think he's actually seen them in the schoolyard when he's driving them on the, on Dan: them in, on the bus. But, on the bus he sees young Nazim running. And he's just Yeah Sidey: and he's just dodging all these people and running around giving people the, you know, dropping the shoulder and leaving them for dead. And then when she asks him, he's like, "Okay." And he says, you know, he chats to them a bit, and s- even then, even as he's something like six, seven years old- Dan: He's the Sidey: He's the cheeky one he's this like cocky little shit. But he's quite endearing still 'cause he's young and he's like- Yeah ... "Okay, fine." 'Cause he asks him, Dan: he's like, "Okay, fine." 'Cause he asks him, didn't he? He goes where'd you get that where'd you get that..." To, to young Nazi, "Where'd you get that sort of bruise on your, on your cheek?" And he goes, "Same place you got that big nose of yours." Like, A- and he likes him, Brendan, you know. He, he, he, he likes, you know, straight-talking people and that bit of character and cockiness. Sidey: Yeah. He says, "Right, well, come down the gym after school but before dinner. Come down." Dan: after school but before dinner. Come down." And for, for weeks and weeks in, in the gym, he's Sidey: Well, the first time they turn up they've got to sing. He says, "Listen, if you can't sing in front of 30 lads, how the fuck are you gonna fight in front of thousands?" Yeah. So you get up and you sing. So the two of the, the older brothers do some lame singing, but they do it. And Naz is like, "I don't sing, but I can dance." And he does some Michael Jackson- Yeah ... kind of Dan: goes, "I let, I let my Sidey: my feet do the talking. Yeah Dan: the, the talking and everything." He's got an answer for everything. Sidey: watches his feet moving. He's like, "Oh, all right." Yeah. "Got something here." And, Dan: that's it. He, he just puts him for weeks and weeks and weeks, he's just making him move his feet on a line and eventually this... 'Cause he's only seven or eight, like, you know, he's saying, "Well, I'm better than the others. Like, put me Sidey: He says, and he says, "Listen, I see 100 lads coming here." Yeah. "And 98 of them I know aren't gonna make it, but I've seen your feet move, and I know you've got what it takes." You've, you've got a chance. He says, "Stay with me. Do as you're told." Dan: he puts him in the ring and he gets punched in the stomach and he goes, "Well, you can last a minute, Sidey: Yeah. you know, then you Dan: can, you can put gloves on 'cause you've not got to hit- Yeah at the moment, you just got to avoid getting hit." Sidey: And he has these, these sort of five tenants of how to fight, doesn't he? Yeah. Which he d- he doesn't really tell you that till he, till he teaches him the fifth one- Yeah which is power. Yeah. I guess first of all it's movement and breathing- Yeah ... and blah, Dan: all, all the rest of it. Sidey: yeah. Yeah. All, all the rest of it. And i- Cris: i-it's- Sidey: It's incredibly racist area. Dan: Yeah. Sidey: And that's what he's really coming up against, is in the gym, first of all, there'll be a few comments, but his son actually Brendan's son is, has got his back as well, and he goes to the same school, so they, he looks after him. And when anyone chaps up, there's always someone who's got his back. And then that transitions then into trying to find a fight, and no one wants to see a, a Dan: Yemeni... They just don't Sidey: Yemeni. They just, they just call him Paki. They just- Yeah, yeah ... they don't really have a clue about any sort of like culture where Dan: Go, go home, that's all they want. But he's seen that, you know, he's got this kind of swagger about him and he's nurturing this kind of attitude and, and this cockiness and, and his his talent. And he's saying, you know, "Use, use all this kind of aggression against you. Sidey: ignore it. He, he fuels it. He, he really encourages the cockiness, doesn't he? And he, he does eventually get him into his first amateur fight. Dan: By putting like weights in his pockets. Sidey: He has to put some stones in his pockets- Yeah ... to make the weight. Seven stone seven, he Dan: He goes, "Right, if he makes the weight, okay, I'll put him in." And then he can't fight at the allotted time because it's prayer Sidey: yeah. Before that, we've had the reporter come in and she's Sidey: trying to Dan: interview another boxer who Brendan has taken on and is, he's just getting famous and he's just starting to, to w- make some money and things. He kind of cuts ties- Sidey: Yeah, he cuts, he bins him off. Yeah Dan: W- With Brendan and goes to do his own thing. And Brendan feels really let down by this and really kind of disappointed that he's given so much time and everything. Sidey: And it's, there's, later on, like the movie kinda sold me for, Cris: of sold Sidey: I don't know, when we get to the sort of- Cris: of- Sidey: The crux of the movie later on, I don't know how to feel about it 'cause e- essentially Naz has his first fight as, as, as a really, like really, really young, and he, and he puts the guy down and he wins the fight, and then they're walking on the kinda heath or on the moors, wherever it is. Yeah. And then he negotiates this thing. He says, "Listen, you know, you stick with me, you learn all this stuff, you can go like- He's 12- ... right to the top." He's tw- Dan: he's 12 years old at this Sidey: he's like, "Oh, br- yeah, really I'll have two Ferrar- I'll have five Ferraris." But Madison... They're talking about Madison Square Garden. They're talking about- Yeah ... this, that, and the other. And he says, "Listen, I'll, I'll stick with you right through it all." Brendan says "I'll just take 25%." And I thought, fucking hell, that's Dan: a lot. It's, it's a, it's a huge, it's a huge amount, and he sees that as like, well, Sidey: will- And even Naz is t- at 12 is like, fucking hell, like 25%. It's like you're gonna make 40 million. Dan: And for everybody else though, listening in or, or, you know, outside of this, it's just talk. But those two know that it's gonna happen. He can see the talent in him, and he can-- He knows- Nas Sidey: and so arrogant- He's so... Yeah, he's so arrogant Dan: and so arrogant Sidey: course I'm gonna... He beats him, and the post-match interview, he's, "I just wanna say a massive thank you. Frank Warren, best promoter in the world. He's absolutely amazing. Brendan, the coach, is the best coach in the world. Absolutely amazing." Next fight, doesn't shout out Brendan. No. And you just start to see a few, like, bits of the relationship just starting to, like, chip away. He's, he's two fucking pretty big boys. There's been a few question marks about how dedicated he is to training. Brendan's like, "No, no, he just trains at, like, funny hours." Hours, yeah. He trains at middle of the night and, Dan: midnight and all ... he's do- he's defending him. He doesn't really wanna see it going. Even his wife tries to tell him at one point, "Look, I think the relationship's changing. You used to spend a lot of time together and now not so much anymore." No, no, no. He doesn't wanna have you know, this problem of, of Naz leaving him. B- he doesn't really wanna confront it and he's, he- it's happening. They're drifting apart. And, you know, these, these two guys that have been on this 17-year kind of journey, he's, he's finally become the, the champion in one of the fights where he's got the Sidey: The Dan: Adidas shorts. He says, "Look, Adidas are interested, all the big sponsors- Sidey: a world champion Dan: Only a world champion ... they're all... They're only a world champion, they want Sidey: Yeah. You gotta win this one ... he, he goes, of course, he does- But he's celebrating like it's a done deal. Like, "Yeah, of course I'm gonna beat him." Yeah. Yeah. That, Dan: that's it. And, and that's all thanks to, to Frank Warren- Yeah ... and his promoting and, and everything. But yeah, the, Sidey: does win that fight and then straight away afterwards he's like, "Oh, everyone's going off to party and to celebrate." He's like, "I just need to speak to Brendan first." And then it comes back later on and Brendan's like... You don't find out exactly straight away, but he's renegotiating. He's like, "You're not getting 25% anymore. That's not happening." Dan: He's... You're... Sidey: can't... He doesn't say what, what it's Dan: standard rate and a, a fee after the fight, but it ain't 25%. It, it isn't what we shook on 12 years ago or 15 Sidey: 'cause they had, they had estimated that he would make 40 million. I think at one point he says, "You're making like 15, 16 million a fight." Yeah. Or a year or whatever. It's like astronomical sums. Yeah. And so, Dan: so there's a fallout then. And he doesn't wanna do it, and you see, Sidey: He comes into the gym eating a fucking like magnum. Yeah. And Brendan's like, "Fucking, we've got like a title fight, you know, a world title fight. This is serious shit. You go in there unprepared, you're just gonna get your ass kicked." And he d- and he says it in front of everyone in the gym, and obviously Naseem doesn't like that. He doesn't like being given a dressing down. He's, he's the big man. He's the best in the world. Yes, you're the best in the world, but there was a reason how you got there, and it was by training and fucking being disciplined- Disciplined ... and yeah, putting it in. You stop doing that, you're fucking gonna lose. You know, we've seen it time and time before, do you know what I mean? But he has a few more fights where he's able to get through just on his, you know, natural Dan: on his natural Sidey: just to dodge punches and... Dan: And, and it comes that, that one day where Frank's at home with the family and Sidey: They Dan: know what's happened of course, and his fight's on, and he's settling down to watch it, and- Sidey: first of all, they, they, they spar. Brendan and him spar. He's had enough of his bullshit. Yeah, he has. And he's like, "Well, when are you..." Naseem's like, "Come on, why don't you fucking spar me?" He's like, "All right, fine." And obviously gives him a fucking hiding. Yeah. And the relationship just basically completely deteriorates to the point where then we see the, the brother, the older brother, Riath, I think his name is, something like that, and he's just a horrible cunt to him. He's like: Listen, you're... You can fuck off. You're getting nothing. You get, you know, expenses and a flat fee, all that. That's it. Take it or leave it. You're out. And so he is out. Dan: He's out, yeah. Sidey: He's out after sparring, and the, the... Like you say, they, they watch the... It's the Brera fight, 'cause my missus didn't know then. I was like: Well, you know, he does well till he comes up against the Mexicans, and then it's like, "See you later." And Brendan Dan: will say a few times, it's not about the money, it's the recognition. It's, it's the fact Sidey: He says, "I've been living in the same house for 30 years. All the money I get goes into the gym." Yeah. You know, me and my wife will be all right, but they're living in a c- it's a council house really. Yeah, yeah. You know, so like a nothing special to up to that. He's not, he's not living large d- Dan: there's no Lamborghinis parked out his place. He's, Sidey: got a Lamborghini parked out his place. He's, it's just to look after the kids, just to funnel everything back and to try and do well for the, for the community, for the- Yeah for the kids there to make everyone all right. And yeah, so he's, he's basically kicked into touch. He's got, Who was Manny who was the trainer? The, the famous trainer that he has? Dan: Manny someone, yeah. It's not Pacq- Pick- Sidey: No, it's obviously not Pacquiao. It was, It's the famous trainer. He coached all the big names. And he's raging 'cause Prince doesn't turn up when he's supposed to for training, all this sort of shit, and basically goes into the Brera fight just completely underprepared. Yeah. Just too arrogant to realize that, you know, you can't- This guy's- ... fucking step in- ... this guy means business. Dan: He's hungry, he wants it, and he ends up losing the, the one time. Yeah, Sidey: so they're watching it at home in Sheffield, and Brendan, you can see he's like... They've had another falling out because he had written a book- Yeah ... about basically everything that he'd done for Naseem and wanting some recognition, and Naseem treats that as a betrayal because he's, you know, Dan: You'd have got a load of Sidey: He got a load of money from Dan: from that and all. Yeah, exactly, yeah. Sidey: But he's still d- really, when you see him watching the fight, he's not... He's gutted that he's losing the fight. He's like- Yeah ... "What the fuck's he doing? He's not prepared. You know, he should be doing this. He should be falling back on this technique." And then, and his two lads are, are, they're, they're more just angry with Prince Naseem. Yeah. So they're happy that he's getting beaten. Yeah. And he just goes and sits outside in the garden, and his wife comes out, and he's like: "I don't wanna, you know-Dan: Yeah. Take no joy in that. No. Yeah. Sidey: happy that he's losing. And Dan: then it comes to another fight in Madison Square Sidey: he gets another... And someone else rocks up at the gym, doesn't he? Dan: he? Yeah. Sidey: Some little Black kid, and he's like, "Oh, I'm, I'm, I, I'm want you to train me to be, like, the next champion. My name's Cal." You know, oh, it's Cal Brook. Yeah. So he's got, you know, he's, he's got a few others. Well, Dan: he had, I think he had four or five champions. Yeah. Sidey: 'cause they do, they do the name drop at the end. He did do the- But yeah, there's a, there's another fight, isn't there? And this is, Naseem's retired at this point. He never... 'Cause he retired at Dan: Yeah. Yeah, he retired, I think, was it after... He might have had one more fight Sidey: he had a couple of goes, and the Mexicans were just too good for him. Yeah. And he wasn't, he just wasn't dedicated enough. Yeah. But Frank Warren's got Brendan along ringside, and across the other side of the ring is Prince Naseem, and they... There's some sort of fuck up, and they said, "Oh, Frank, we need you. There's something's..." And he's, "Oh, fucking hell. I'll be back in a minute." He pissed someone off. And they, yeah, they just, like, catch each other's eye, don't they, Brendan and Prince, and they're like- Dan: And they have a word Sidey: and clear the air" ... in the Dan: locker room, like in a, in a kinda laundry room, Sidey: And this is when I wa- 'cause I'd been like, "Oh, he's been a fucking prick the whole time, Naseem." And he's like, when he says his piece, I'm like, "Fucking he's probably right." Dan: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's right. I mean, he said, "I was 12, Brendan. You're taking me, making a deal with me, taking 25% when I was 12 years old." Sidey: Everything after that was completely transactional. It, you know, he was, that was transaction. Dan: it was a... That was transaction. You were just after money. And they both kinda say things that, And Sidey: my heart and soul." That's when he says, it's actually what he says about... He says, "I never... I put it all back in the gym." He goes, "I never made-" Yeah, yeah. You know, that he says his piece, and he, he says, "I had to write the book because, you know, I had to put my, my story across," and blah, blah, blah. And then it goes back to the ringside bit, and someone comes along and goes, "Frank, there's been a fuck up. We need you." And he's like, "Oh, for fuck's sake." And you're like, "Whoa, what?" And then they, they look at each other across the thing, and then Frank comes back and he's like, "Oh, fucking sorted that," and it never happened. They never had that conversation. Like basically the conversation- It was just, it's just in his head thinking, "Oh, you know, that's what I would say to him if I had, had the chance." Dan: And I did see an interview with N- Nas about this film, who said that he, he and his wife were in a hotel, and they saw the director of the film and the writer, I think it was the writer and director of the, the film in the, in the hotel. And he said he went over to him and he said, "I gave him a big hug." He said, "For that last part of the film, I wish we'd have done that." You know? He said, "I Sidey: yeah. I bet he did, yeah. So I Dan: hugged him because they never reconciled. Yeah. Sidey: 'Cause he d- the, the... Whatever fight they're at you know, that kind of, that kind of goes, and then it just says, like, Brendan died. They never rec- Got 17 or whatever they never reconciled. Dan: And yeah, I mean, the boxing, And Sidey: then it says that he never reconciled, but after he died, you know, Prince Naseem did then give a heartfelt kinda like Dan: He did, he did a lot for me, you know, and he gave Sidey: I thought, 'cause they, I thought he was gonna be a pallbearer, 'cause they showed his coffin again, and I thought, "Oh, maybe he's one of the ones..." No, no, Dan: No. No. And it, Cris: it, it- Well, he's only little anyway Dan: so it wa- it was- Sidey: recently? Cris: Well, wide but not Sidey: He's f- he's a unit now. Fucking hell. Cris: yeah. I don't think he's a good Dan: then I think that guy or somebody in his family ended up crashing into his wife- Right afterwards, like, you know, but they realized that was just an accident, but he thought it was revenge as well. But yeah, the... as far as his boxing career, he was a devastating fighter, and there's no doubt, I think anybody would recognize, you know, somebody's trained you from seven years old to, you know, 18, Cris: and Sidey: and Dan: you've got to be a professional fighter then that talent had obviously been nurtured Sidey: nurtured- and he'd Dan: taken him and, and, and led him on the, on the right way of doing things. Whether he'd have got there anyway, you know, I mean, hard Sidey: Yeah, I'm sure he would've, he would've done- Dan: He was obviously a very talented, But he was a talented boxer, but he was obviously a very talented trainer as well because he did it with other- Yeah ... you know, boxers, and he, he trained them to become world Sidey: rejects him for it, doesn't he? He says, "It's, it's my gifts are from Allah, not from you." Yeah. "La, la." You Dan: la." Okay. Yeah. Sidey: Yeah, so I was... Yeah, I didn't look into, like, who commissioned... Like, you know, it wasn't, didn't seem to me like it was something that Prince Naseem would've gone out and said- No "Make this film about me." It's, it's, it's not. Just completely independent. Yeah. 'Cause it's more... To me, it's more even Brendan's film really. Yeah. Dan: I think, so, yeah. Sidey: The fights looked pretty good. The, the fellow that played... All the ones that play, 'cause you get him at various different ages- Yeah all the, all the people that play Prince Naseem are very good Dan: They are, yeah. Yeah, particularly the, the main guy as an adult. Sidey: Absolutely. 'Cause they, they sort of make a thing about his his weight, don't they, when they see him, when he, when they have the sort of imagined reconciliation. Yeah. And he says, "Oh, nice suit." And he goes, "Yeah," you know- I Dan: had a few, Sidey: "Put on a bit." And you think, "Fucking hell, have a look at him now." Cris: Yeah. I've Dan: up. Yeah. Yeah. Sidey: no, yeah. Yeah. Dan: and yeah, it, it, I mean, two, two stubborn men, you know, who as say didn't, didn't unfortunately reconcile their, their differences after having such a, a success and influence on each other's lives. But what did you think of the movie, Sid? Cris: Sid? Sidey: I thought it was pretty paint by numbers, to be honest. Yeah. I... There was n- although Naseem was obviously like a real showman in the ring and a good fighter and stuff, I was never really a fan of him because I thought he was a dickhead, to be honest. Yeah. Well, certainly saw him a couple years ago, didn't like him either. Dan: And it's, Sidey: and it's Cris: it's Sidey: It's nothing really that remarkable. I, I like, I really like Piers Brosnan in it, I thought he was really good. Yeah. I thought the, the performances actually were good across the board, but It didn't, it didn't stand out in any way really to me. No. Dan: I like a sports movie. Cris: Me too. Normally, yeah. Which was what Frank Warren in this movie was all about. He was, you know, making money which he did do. But it was a shame the story, as I say, the fact that it didn't didn't end well- That's the truth. And that bit at the end where he, he has that- Mm ... that conversation. Sidey: 'Cause they hug and they cry together ... and they hug and they cry Dan: they cry together. If that had ended, like if that had been true, I, I might have enjoyed the film a little bit more. But the fact that it was in there was great. Yeah. But actually that's not the way that it ended. Yeah, the film was, was okay. I wouldn't rush to watch it again certainly anytime Cris: Surely it's not a big budget though. No. There isn't many updates Dan: it's a- It's available but I wouldn't say so ...
