Giants & Giant

Giants & Giant

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads review Giant, the Prince Naseem Hamed biopic starring Amir El-Masry as Naz and Pierce Brosnan as legendary Sheffield trainer Brendan Ingle. It is a boxing film, a mentor-protégé story, a study of fame and arrogance, and a surprisingly knotty argument about whether loyalty, recognition and money can ever stay clean once a child prodigy becomes a multi-million-pound champion.

The episode opens with Reegs still absent in French France, which means no clever intro but plenty of warnings about swears and spoilers. Dan has watched classic film noir Laura and revisited Universal Soldier for the Midweeker, Cris has been watching Pierce Brosnan in western series The Son alongside some nostalgic X-Men ’97, and Sidey has been back into Barry while also sampling a Netflix serial-killer thriller involving De Niro and missing boys. There is also football, DIY, paint guns, teal walls and the sort of domestic detail that proves cinema podcasting is mostly glamour.

For Top 5 Giants, the dads go suitably massive. Dan starts with The Iron Giant and the animated BFG, while Cris brings in Romanian basketball player Gheorghe Mureșan via Billy Crystal’s My Giant, then stretches the theme through the MonsterVerse, The Odyssey, Leprechaun 4: In Space and Rush Hour 3. Sidey nominates Fezzik from The Princess Bride, They Might Be Giants, The The’s “Giant”, Game of Thrones’ actual giants and finally the Giant from Twin Peaks, giving him another chance to declare David Lynch’s nightmare television more or less untouchable. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Riding Giants and several real-life giants also get thrown into the oversized mix.

The main review focuses on Giant as a story about two men rather than one. Prince Naseem is obviously the famous fighter, but the film arguably belongs just as much to Brendan Ingle, whose Sheffield gym gives young lads discipline, community and a way to redirect anger. The dads talk through the early scenes: Brendan spotting young Naz’s footwork, taking him into the gym, making new boys sing before they fight, teaching movement before punching, and helping him deal with racist abuse in an environment where National Front attitudes are never far from the surface.

As Naz rises, the film follows the familiar sports-biopic path of talent, training, showmanship and success, but the more interesting material comes from the relationship slowly cracking. Brendan nurtures Naz’s cockiness because it fuels the fighter, but that same confidence becomes harder to control once promoters, sponsorships, family influence and huge money arrive. Frank Warren sees the commercial value of Naz’s brash persona, the family starts questioning Brendan’s cut, and the childhood handshake deal over 25% becomes the moral fault line of the film.

Sidey and Dan both find that argument more complicated than the film first appears to suggest. Brendan clearly changes Naz’s life, puts the money back into the gym, builds champions and cares deeply about the boy he trained from childhood. At the same time, agreeing a huge percentage with a 12-year-old is uncomfortable, however much both of them believed in the dream. The imagined reconciliation scene near the end gives the film its strongest emotional beat, because it lets Naz say he was a child and Brendan say he gave everything. The sting is that, in real life, they never properly reconciled.

The performances get the strongest praise. Pierce Brosnan is very good as Brendan Ingle, and the various actors playing Naseem — especially Amir El-Masry as the adult Naz — capture the movement, swagger and showboating well. The fight scenes are convincing, the Sheffield material gives the story texture, and the film does enough with a modest-feeling British production to stay watchable throughout.

The verdict is positive but measured. Sidey thinks it is pretty paint-by-numbers and admits he was never a huge fan of Naseem’s arrogance, though he respects the story and really likes the performances. Dan enjoys the sports-movie structure and the tragic mentor-student angle, but does not think the film quite lands a knockout blow. Cris had not seen it in time for recording, but the discussion leaves the film sounding like one he would still watch. Overall, the dads call it a moderate to strong recommend: interesting, well acted and easy to watch, if not quite a heavyweight classic.

SPEAKER_00

It is giant.

SPEAKER_04

It's huge. It's massive.

SPEAKER_03

It's just a uh still no reeves. He's still in French France. Woohoo. So no clever intro. Let's just remind everyone that there will be swears. Yeah. And there will be spoils. Yes, there will be. But I forgot to say that the last few times. But that does tend to happen. God, that'd scare people, wouldn't it?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it would do a bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

In for a nice, pleasant family podcast.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it is a family podcast, but we do have the order. Few family swears, they're all grown up.

SPEAKER_04

Some little kid just told me spurs were shit about half an hour. That's true. That's true. But that's they teach that in schools, yeah. For the majority of the curriculum.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Hold back. Have you watched much of the sweet dance? I don't think you have, have you? I I watched a film today actually called Laura, which is a a film back in the day, an Oscar winner. It was with Gene Tierney, and it was about a girl who'd been killed, Laura, and the the murderer and the detective trying to find out who did it with all the people around. And it turns out actually she's not dead, and she comes back into it and he's sleuthing around. Told you that'd be spoilers to find different scenarios and and the people who who might have actually done the murder with all her friends. So watch that, and then not a lot else other than just Universal Soldier, which we did for the Midweeker, Van Damme. A bit of Van Damme content, you know, just once you go into the YouTube of Van Dam, he did that commercial where he did the splits between the lorries, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, that was it really. Okay. Not much else.

SPEAKER_00

What about you, Chris? I've watched a few episodes of a series called The Sun, which is a Western with Piers Brosnan. It's a 2017 uh drama western thing. I do like a western and it's it's i I I generally quite like this, and it it is set in the 1700s or something, so so it's quite nice, and it's it's on two timelines, let's say, where Piers Brosnan characters, Eli McCullough gets kidnapped at 13 by the Comanches who kills his family. Right. And then when he's in his 70s, so it's the parallel story by when he was at with the Comanches and how he grows up with them to become this ruthless businessman. And now he's in Texas, he's born on the same day as Texas, as Texas was invented or whatever, or Texas Independence. And he now turns 70 or something, and he owns land and he's got oil on the land, but he's trying to invest, get people to invest in his f seek search for oil and all that. Okay. It's kind of those parallel stories. The sun. What's it on? The television box. Oh, right. It's I think it's an HBO production thing. The only problem is I I I actually quite like Piers Brosson, and I especially in Mobland, I really liked him because he plays an Irishman who is a gangster or whatever, and and that suits him very well because that's what he is in real life. Right? He's a he's a no, he's a British man, right? Yeah. In this one, when he's when he's from Texas, the accent doesn't really it doesn't really work. So so when I I I like half of the battle for me is with these westerns is when the the accent and the language is proper, yeah, American, South, yeah, that kind of style. And everyone else in the film has it but him. And it's it's it's interesting so far. I watched about three episodes, and I've watched about five or six episodes of X-Men 97. Really? Yeah. Why? I just remember watching it as a kid, and I rem I remember used to like the Okay, I just remember imagined it was something you'd be into. Not necessarily 97.

SPEAKER_03

It's weird how they just well it's not weird, it's it's interesting that they've done the same style, you know, to go back to how it was.

SPEAKER_00

It was, yeah. Which again, I I kinda um So I watched these in parallel, let's say. Not because I wanted it's because more nostalgia for the X-Men. And this one, because I like uh Western, it's a bit of a slow burn in the first three episodes, so I don't know how much I'm gonna it's there's two seasons, so I'll probably give it a go for the first season because it's still interesting, and then I'll probably bin it off. So that's it. I haven't watched anything else and I've been working so I don't really have time for anything else. The football's back as well.

SPEAKER_04

So a bit of Peters Bosnian stuff then you've watched this week. Because obviously you have filmed Giant. Or did you get to watch that one? Didn't watch the number one. Oh, so the the film that we're is back to being Irish. Okay, right, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I've I'm I I feel bad for not watching it, but I honestly didn't have time. I I uh I do like and I've seen the stor the the film before the giant, the prisoner scene story, and I I actually I'm probably gonna watch it, but I just didn't have time. Listen to our review and see what you you think of it.

SPEAKER_04

What about yourself, so I didn't know what's going on. I've not seen anything crazy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I've been back into the series Barry. Right. Which is he Barry's a hitman, but he joins an acting class. It's really good. It's really, really good. So I've been watching about three or four episodes of that this week. And then I this morning I was watching and really enjoying The Whisper Man or The Whispering Man. It's a brand new one, I think. It's on Netflix. It is Sting Ross De Niro and the lady who I can never ever remember the name of, but she plays Ethan's wife in the Mission Impossible series, and she was in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. She's the current detective, so there's a serial killer who there's a and he has a sort of rhyme where whispering, turn up at your door, tapping on your window, blah blah. And he in the past he'd killed five boys, and there's always the same thing where he takes their t-shirt and wraps it around their head, strangles them because he doesn't want them to watch him or s look at them while he's killing them. And then it starts to happen again while the guy's in prison. De Niro had caught him the first time round, and so she goes to see De Niro. It's either a copycat or they never got the right guy. They had a theory at the time. Now he definitely did the first ones, but De Niro had a theory at the time that he had an accomplice that was shot down, but now that it's happening again. So that's where I'm at of the film where there's been two more kills. Well, one kill and a boy is missing. And he records these he sends he records them interviewing them on this little tape and he sends that to the family every time it's twisted. The film is like pretty generic advice really like those things you can just watch, you know. So yeah, we've been watching that, and that's about it. Chris and I watched the football, which is great, Chris. The fucking shit for me. Because he and I didn't. Other than that, that's that's really been it.

SPEAKER_04

That's it. Okay. Well, we've got a top five Giants.

SPEAKER_03

Yep. And Giant, the movie to watch. Should we uh delve into our top five? Sh share, share, share.

SPEAKER_00

Let's I think don't know what that was, but no.

SPEAKER_03

Right, Daniel Giant it up to the max.

SPEAKER_04

Giants, so giants and movies. I thought this would be a big hit. There's lots of different giants. The one that instantly came to my mind was the iron giant. Yeah. The the cartoon with the funky kind of jazz soundtrack to it as well. I really like that. It is it's the hang's involved in this. In that he may have done. He may have been. It's that long long ago, to be honest. But it's a Brad Bird movie, isn't it? Yeah, 1999, and it was Vin Diesel who did the the voice of the mechanical's deep voice. But yeah, it was it would you know bring a bit of a a tear to the eye really because this big friendly iron giant was just misunderstood until a little kid kind of finds him and he he befriends him. A a classic cartoon. Yes, that will kick off my giant.

SPEAKER_00

Nice. Chris? I have. There's a Romanian act well, he wasn't actually a basketball player. He's not a I've I mentioned this film before. There's a film with Billy Crystal, which obviously we all. And uh it's a film that's called My Giant. Yeah. And it's with uh Billy Crystal and Gitzamorushant. The real guy, wasn't it? He was a real guy, yeah. Because then it was the He was a guy from Romania that was a basketball player. Yeah. Ah, yeah, yeah, no, yeah. Billy Crystal, I can't remember how he he's like a talent spotter or something like that, like an agent kind of guy. And he Can you remember how tall he was? Gitsamoreshan. Yeah. Two seventeen, two meters seventeen, which is big. Big. I don't know what that is in six foot, seven foot tall.

SPEAKER_04

It's seven or eight feet, that isn't it? He's I can tell you in a minute.

SPEAKER_00

Gitsamoreshan. Tell you right now. He seven seven feet. Seven. Seven foot seven inches. He crumbs. He was playing he wasn't a superstar in the NBA, but he played for the in in the NBA to be a an NBA player. Because he dunk. Yeah, he just if he bent down. Yeah, he had to crouch a little bit. And the film itself isn't great. Because there is no great Billy Crystal film. Probably not, I'm gonna say. I don't know. I I don't think I've seen that. Um look i it it's it's it's called My Giant and it's got a pretty giant human in it.

SPEAKER_04

So I'll Did he play Carl the Giant in Big Fish as well?

SPEAKER_03

I've not seen Big Fish. It did come up when I was looking around the internet for Jimmy.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know if maybe if he he played Well, Billy Crystal. No. Yeah. A misunderstood, played Carl the Giant, and he was like misunderstood in his village and he was always hungry, and then he ended up being found his kind of place as as being the the giant in a circus in this in this film. I think it was that that same It could be that same actor.

SPEAKER_03

We watched and enjoyed the movie The Princess Bride for the pod. Yeah. Which features Pheasant's kind of reluctance to fight giant. I think he was in like excruciating pain, wasn't he, throughout the whole thing?

SPEAKER_04

Well he did like a hundred and twenty beers, which will give anybody excruciating pain, I would imagine.

SPEAKER_03

It was a big dude. A real big dude. Really huge. And it was his wrestling name, you know, Andre the Giant. He was he was the unit. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Cold Cold hero from for us or informed people really when we're because he was a gigantic man, but he was actually a nice person by all accounts.

SPEAKER_03

That's how he's and we've mentioned it a million times on the pod, but there's the the list of what he would drink in one session. It's just like would kill a normal man. Yeah. But uh but Fezick, we we liked that. It was a great movie.

SPEAKER_04

The BFG is is another one. The animated one, yeah. Yeah, rather than the one that they made a few years ago with the the live anime. I don't know who did that. I would say it was a Spingleberg thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it might have been a spielberg, but it wasn't very good. I remember seeing the trailer and seeing the poster for it. Yeah. I never had any interest or of watching that, if I'm being honest.

SPEAKER_04

It was, yeah, it was you know, it was obviously a roll-doll classic, this big kind of friendly giant, the BFG, and a and a young orphan get together and go on their adventures. It was Spielberg, he doesn't get many wrong, but this was a bit of a turkey for me. But the cartoon was fantastic, and the book, of course, so they're going around taking kids' dreams.

SPEAKER_02

And yeah, there was there was like store them up in jars.

SPEAKER_04

That's right. But he was he was friendly, there was dreamtures and yes, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

But there's some ones later on in the movie that are real bastards. Yeah. Horrible fantasies. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um there's a bunch of them that are kind of piled up in the same universe that we did when we had the the week of Godzilla and Kong and all that. Monsterverse. Monsterverse, yeah, they're the ones where you have basically you have Godzilla, you have King Kong. King Kong, uh, you have the Hydra kind of yeah, that thing. There are all these super size. Mothra. Rodin. Yes, all the giant rat, the giant you know, anaconda. Yeah, or all these giant kind of Titans, yeah. Titans. Yeah. Titanoboa, all that kind of stuff. Yeah. Is it the Zoo is at the zoo? Titanoboa. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

In a Lego. Nice, which was pretty impressive. Pretty pretty. Yeah, some for something that actually existed. So they're all I I I'm not gonna just mention one, they're all kind of in the same. They're more movies than one, but they're all kind of the same giants in in film, really. Yeah, because it's a classic.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. It starts off as a sort of the villain of the beast, just because he's fucking destroying everything in his path, and later on they come to rely on him to help against the other monsters to fight the other ones off, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I have to say though, i i I was I can't remember who I was speaking to the other week, and we were we were talking about maybe it was Akira, about the the first kind of global superstars, right? Like before the internet, you would have Maradona, you have Michael Jackson, you would have maybe Elvis, where if you go to a village in Africa, oh like the Beatles, yeah, the Beatles, like these uh between all these in in the space of let's say 20 years, in the from the 60s to late 80s, you would have all these The Queen. The Queen, yeah, you you would have all these that would be a global superstar for whatever reason, it would be sport or acting or whatever. And for me, I said Godzilla, and I think here I was looking at me like Godzilla, but that's not real. I was like, it doesn't matter. Because in even in communist Romania, yeah, people would have known what Godzilla is, yeah. They would have seen a film or that there would have been something out of the out of that.

SPEAKER_03

Whereas it's the monoculture because there was only so many channels where you could find stuff. So if something was popular enough to go across those, they never would know about it. Now, that song recently that's is it Sam Fender and Olivia Dean? It's broken the record for like I don't know, I've never heard it. Really? Oh it's insane. Oh, you've you've heard it in the cafe because probably heard it without knowing what it is, but it's just like there's just so many ways to hear things or watch things that things just don't catch on in the same way. And yes, things still get really popular, but like you say, yeah, it was in those days. That was the yeah, once things were famous, everyone knew about it.

SPEAKER_00

And because there was what, two radio stations in every country, or one. You know, there was the news and the music one, and that was it. TV stations, two, three channels, yeah. Five for you guys that were the Western world. We had two and it was Chaosescu all the time. Yeah, yeah. You don't see anything else. So so those were the the first global ones. So I that that's probably a good shout, I would say.

SPEAKER_03

Well something else that was really, really popular globally, I would say, was Game of Thrones, and there was giants in that. One one was one of them, and uh one of them and Mag the Mighty, and they were big fuckers and handy in a battle because I was about to say, was that towards the end when they're fighting in the wall, or or they were in it because what was quite handy was for them to be part of the earlier battles and then to die and to be resurrected by the the fucking dark Oh the white walkers. Yes, and then so then you become a zombified giant, so you've got to see them five. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Did you both watch the whole Game of Thrones? Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_04

I've only watched it like once, and uh I was getting drip fed program, like I got sucked in, so it was just one of those things. We were waiting to the music and all sorts um ideas.

SPEAKER_00

I've never watched it, so I don't I don't know anything about it. Well that that was I've heard the mother of the dragons.

SPEAKER_03

So good for the white people, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I know of what you guys are saying in Pete and that.

SPEAKER_03

80% of it is really, really like top tier, and then basically they all had been doing it for so long they wanted to do other stuff, so they signed off to like move on. And they also went they went beyond where the books were. Right, okay. So they didn't have the source material and it just kind of fell off a cliff. They had all this lore and all these strands of the story that they'd built out, and you know, where's that gonna get? And they just had to like fuck all that off and just end it basically. And so the ending wasn't great, and it makes I would I would re-watch it, but n but knowing that it just doesn't end very well, it's just like I can't be bothers. Whereas Pete's watched it, I think, like three or four times through.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, I'd watch it again again one day. How many series?

SPEAKER_00

How many years? Seven or eight?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, seven, eight seasons. I think yeah, it's a big commitment. Yeah, but actually the first season just on its own is it is very good. I I would I'd watch it again. I mean, there's just people where you think, oh, they'll definitely be in it next. Poof, they're gone. You know, just wiped out, and it was brutal like that, just the way that it finished off the main characters and everything. I've got a a slightly off offbeat one. It's the giant foot in Monty Pine and the and the Holy Grow, you know, the big foot that just comes down in the title animation sequence and he just squashes like characters through a button. I thought that would be a good one. The other one that we haven't mentioned, but I'd be surprised if people aren't shouting uh at this, saying, You've got to put that one in. Ghostbusters. Stay puff marks, stay puffed. He's just that huge towering monster of pure sugar with the smile and the little sailor's cap as he marches through New York with his his weird eyes and everything, size of buildings, and eventually gooey white stuff is just everywhere apart from one Bill Mowered, why at the end he's got like a little bit on his nose or something like that. There you go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, a good one. Very nice. I've got from a film that I've watched recently, and I watched it with my parents, which I've mentioned maybe, or I haven't I don't think I've been back here since I've been to Romania. Or maybe I have. I watched the Odyssey in IMAX in Romania my parents. And I did I tell you this that I watched it with my mum and dad, and we went to the Oh you did, yeah, because then you said your dad was like, well, we'll go every week. He was yeah, he said to my mum, honestly, he said to my mum that this is amazing because he's got a hearing thing, like a hearing aid. And in the IMAX, you don't need that. So there's no need for that, and you understand everything. Did you do the Formax one where it's uh It doesn't, they don't have the 4 Max, but it it's still really good. And then we we were not the the backpack seats, but we were kind of like you don't have to look up or down, you're just like straight. I was it was brilliant, honestly. It's a massive hole, like the the whole thing. Never done an eye on anything to do. It was so good, honestly. And uh I said to Siddy, like my dad was said to my mom after we go home, and it's a three-hour and and a bit film, right?

SPEAKER_04

And for them to sit down for any of us to sit down for 70s, right?

SPEAKER_00

And f both of them were like, that was incredible. And my dad was like, you know what we should do? We should go there more often. She's like, Well, we should go once a month. Not once a week, but it's like once a month. Because my mom knows that her ways with the internet. My dad's like, his phone is still the one with the buttons. Yeah, okay, yeah. And he doesn't, yeah, he's a 76-year-old man, he doesn't care. And uh he's like, You should look next month what's on, and we go together. That's it. Oh, that's nice. And he's like, Oh, but if we go there, can we pay there? Because I don't know how to book it on. I think, yeah, you just go there and you pay there, it's gonna be fine. And honestly, he was buzzing as well, it was so good. But in the Odyssey, which is I have to say, if you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it. Yeah, it's a good movie. Uh, because it's it's good.

SPEAKER_04

And see it in the cinema. There's not many films that get me going to the cinema, especially because it's for that, yeah. But this is designed, meant, and you know, better in the cinema. In these big kind of epics that Christopher Nolan does.

SPEAKER_00

And I don't wanna I don't want to sound horrible, it's it's one of them that we we've all seen films that have high budgets, high expectations, great cast, and you're a bit like don't deliver. Yeah. Whereas this one was good. And uh there's a couple of giants, because obviously this is Greek mythology and and this is you know well documented. I can't remember the swords people, the crusader people looking with the armors where they're fucking massive when they go and they see the kid that the si is the size of a human. Yeah, adult. Yeah, and then he's just a kid, he's just like an eight-year-old, but he's the size of them. Yeah, that's but the giant polyphemus, yeah, the cyclops is the cyclops, Prometheus' son, yeah, which keeps them in the cave and they Stab in the eye.

SPEAKER_04

He's no need to go back in to to get him, really, is he? But you know, they they've escaped essentially, but he's because he's killed him.

SPEAKER_03

Because he's killed some of their men, he's just like there's a different version of him in Oh Brother, where art thou? John Goodman is the one-eyed Bible salesman. Right, yeah. Different take on these.

SPEAKER_00

But that's and honestly, I have to say, in the cinema, when he shouts, when uh the psycho shouts when it does the jump. Yeah. Honestly, it's uh it's just like stray the hair on the arm just goes up. It's is they've done it really well on that one.

SPEAKER_03

Cool, right. And I'll do just a couple of musical ones and then I'll have my NOM for us. The band called They Might Be Giants. Remember them? Do you remember any of their songs? No, don't think so. Put Little Birdhouse in your soul. Oh, yeah, putting it in the city. And It's Temple, not Constantinople. That was them. They also did the song Boss of Me, You're Not the Boss of Me now, which is the theme tune to Malcolm in the middle. And then an album I fucking really, really like is called Soul Mining. Remember that one? It's by a band called The Ver, and there's a song, a track on it called Giant. It's about nine minutes long. It's fucking brilliant. Strong recommend for that. I would definitely urge you to stick that on. I have it on vinyl. You can actually buy a special edition of that. I think it's available on Amazon, and it comes with the actual like reel-to-reel recording of it, as I would say.

SPEAKER_04

That's pretty rad. So yeah, just my nom to go. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I will say the attack of the 50-foot woman was a good one about so there is a character in Game of Thrones called Brianne of Tarth. Yeah. And we had someone start at work who's really, this really tall woman. And she's a she's now we've like she doesn't know this, but we call her Leanne of Tarth. She's fucking massive. And then there's other comments like, Why the fuck can we like employ the fifty-foot woman or something?

SPEAKER_04

Attack of the fifty foot. So that was this kind of cult famous rubbish film. Apparently, I've only seen clips of it because it's it's a black and white. It was an old B movie, wasn't it? But just uh you know, it did they remake it with Darrow Hanno? Am I imagining that? No, I think they did. I think they might have they did. Honey I blew up the kid. Yeah. Yeah. That that one where they did a series of those.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Riggs once memorably renamed the franchise's Honey I Changed the Size of Something.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yeah. But the one that I'm gonna add in is called Riding Giants, and it's a surf documentary film of big wave riders, Lard Hamilton going out to Mavericks and just surfing. I think it's Mavericks in in like Maui or somewhere like it's issues, like you know, you've talked talking about 30 meter waves, and they've got Tipu, which is really heavy, and and Nazar in Portugal or really kind of big.

SPEAKER_00

The iconic big one. Oh, that's yeah, that's where it's jet ski out of them.

SPEAKER_04

And yeah, they've got to they've got to tow them in there exactly. And you see the wipeouts, like I was just ended up watching just little bits of people and bone crunching, you know, absolutely just death. They they have to hold practice just holding their breath underwater and everything. But that was a a real classic. I've got some actual giants as well, if you want to hear about some real people that were historic verified giants. Okay. What's the cutoff? Like when what you So it is actually a medical thing. I think if you have gigantism. Um it's not I think in height, if you're around two metres, then you know you could be considered uh a giant. Well, isn't it? So yeah, Robert Wadlow was 11 inches and two metres seventy-two. He's the tallest verified person in recorded history. His feet would also buckle round because it was just cope with the size and the weight. That's right. He was highly respected, he became the world's tallest boy scout, and he famously rejected travelling circus sideshows instead because he was he had some dignity, and instead he decided to go as a spokesman for a shoe company where he had to get obviously special made shoes. I remember being in Niagara and going to like the Madame Two Swords, and you could like step up on the steps and look through this mask of Robert Wadlow to see. Yeah, like how high is he. And next to him they had this world's smallest woman who was like, you know, foot and a half or two foot or something, just to compare him. John Bud Rogan was the second tallest person in history. And uh he he came in uh eight foot nine, two metres sixty-seven, and the tallest African American on record, his gigantes and made his joints so stiff he he couldn't walk, but he used a cart pulled by goats to get around and made a a living selling portraits and postcards of himself. Angus Macaskill, known as the Cape Breton Giant, is recognised by Guinness as the the largest true giant in history, meaning that his stature and legendary strength were natural and not caused by anything medical. Oh right, it was just a big deal.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so apparently there's a gland.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, if you if they can treat that, they used to kind of shrink down, don't they? Yeah, almost. And yeah, so he he was I mean, he was he was relatively short at two metres sixty thirty-six compared to Wadlo's got like half a metre over him. Um and then you've got Threenenschi Krieva, who is a seventeenth century Dutch woman believed to be the tallest female in history, nicknamed De Groot Mead, which means the tall girl. And she was a bit of a celebrity in Europe, but unfortunately died quite young. So they do, don't they? These massive people. Yeah, so there's a few really people.

SPEAKER_00

Well done. Chris, you're not? I've got uh one thing that I need to mention is a film called Leprechaun, and in Leprechaun 4, in space from 1990, Sick Davis, who is the leprechaun, gets hit by an enlargement ray aboard a spaceship, and he grows to be a giant and towers over the space marines and the alien princess. Obviously, this is a budget film, and the movie is like a miniature set, so you can clearly see that this is Riggs is a big fan of that franchise. He's seen them all, yeah. Okay, yeah. Well, he is one of them.

SPEAKER_03

I think Jennifer Aniston's in the first movie.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know who it is because I've never seen it, I'm not gonna lie, but it's Leprechaun 4 in space. You need to watch it, it's from 1996. And obviously, Riggs being part of the Leprechaun family, uh he that's probably why he likes that. But my nom will be in Rush Hour 3, there is a scene when the two beloved actors go to Chinese dojo, yeah, and the Chris Tucker's character opens the sliding doors and tries to get out and be like, I'll kick your ass doing all these, and there's a giant Chinese student, and he basically beats the shit out of him in the film. I don't know if you remember this, but I do because I thought I don't know for whatever reason, I thought that was hilarious. And this is uh it's not Yao Ming, but it's close to that. See it?

SPEAKER_03

I don't remember it. I've definitely seen all the things.

SPEAKER_00

It's i in in the Chinese dojo, and it's the same scene when the Sensei is you. And he's and his name is you, and he's like Who is who are you? You know, who are you? You I'm you and uh No, I'm you, and and this the the play on words and all that.

SPEAKER_04

I have some profooner.

SPEAKER_00

That's where just before that, that's where the um the apprentice kicks our kicks both Jackie Chan and Chris Ducker's ass, so that will be my non.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Mine is sort of somewhat predictable in the sense that it's Twin Peaks. Yeah. The actor is a guy called Carol Struck Struckin, and he is a giant. There's so there's a duality in Twin Peaks, the Black Lords, the White Lords, the good and evil, blah blah blah. And when Cooper sees himself has his dream and he's in the red room thing, which is the lodge, there's a small person, you know, the the d who talks backwards and dances and does a little Hey and all that. Then later on there's the giant guy, he starts appearing midway through well, in season two, and he says sort of crypt, he just gives cryptic kind of messages to Agent Cooper, and he says that gum and I think it might be the the old man actually says that gum you light is gonna come back and style. But at one point he says to Cooper, it is happening again, and everything freezes and it kind of like goes into strobe effect, and then there's another murder that happens, and I promise you it is I think the fucking best thing that's ever been on television ever is fucking unbelievably brilliant. Yes, well, it's certainly my favourite. I would I would say that there's no real way to categorize if something is you know actually the best thing ever. I it I just think it's fucking incredible. And another murder happens, and the giant announces it by saying it is happening again, and yeah, it's cool. It's very, very, very, very cool.

SPEAKER_04

Some good giants there. Yeah, yeah. Some big choices. We need two more huge noms.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So let's have 'em.

SPEAKER_04

Let's go for it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

When is you going to the rescue? Thursday. Oh, soon.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Thursday. Okay. Right. The main feature of Giant Week. Yeah. It's Giant. It's a movie.

SPEAKER_04

And it's a biopic. The UK's answer to Rocky. Prince that's that's the poster. Is it? Yeah. No, I'm looking at it now. Okay. That's yeah. It's it's not.

SPEAKER_03

I'll say that, it's not his answer. Out of the gate I can tell you it ain't that. It's kind of two people's story, really. So it's it is it is obviously Prince Nassi Mohammed's story, but it's also largely arguably more so about his trainer. Brendan Ingall. Yeah, played in this movie by Piers Brosnan.

SPEAKER_04

Who gets top billion, as you'd expect. I mean he's the big name in it. Yeah. But yeah, it it you're right, it's it's very much the the pair of them featured for this film, although boxing fans would have heard of Prince Nazim, who was an absolutely devastating fighter.

SPEAKER_03

We see we see some black and white recreated footage of him, of the guy playing Nassim Fine, and he does look the part in his sort of heyday. And then we go back in time to the mean streets of Sheffield, and it's a party going on in the in the gym itself, it where the boxing gym that is, where Piers Brosnan and Brendan Ingalls character is sort of DJing this party, and some kids is like starting to have a rumble. There's kids going around spiking all the drinks, yeah, and then there's the local sort of reverend dude, isn't it, who comes in?

SPEAKER_04

You know, you're getting them off the streets, but look, this is this is chaos in here. He's very relaxed, he sees these two young lads having Emma Dingdon and then he says, Right. Come on, into the ring and brings him in there and then gets And this is his MO basically.

SPEAKER_03

He he takes kids off the streets and he teaches them not how not just how to fight but how how actually to behave, how to be disciplined, how to, you know, be productive and f get some fitness and learn some life lessons. At one scene, he demonstrates the life lessons by in front of this reporter by asking the kids like what did who did you used to hate? And he's like, Packies and black people. And now who do you hate? No one's no one.

SPEAKER_04

There you go. Tees life skills, this is it. We're teaching them respect and everything. And yeah, against the sort of backdrop of this. It's the National Front and all that sort of horrible. National Front, horrible bastards. There's this young family. He nips out to the shop, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I think his wife sends him out the shop to get a pint of milk or whatever it is. And he sees two skinheads spray for a national front graffiti on the shop and the Pakistani lady there. Well, she's Mrs. Yemeni, actually. Yemeni, yeah. She can't do a thing, but he sort of basically makes them scuttle off and they shout some abuse back, but he's like, Listen, fuck off. And then he goes into shop and he says, Look, I just want a pint of milk, you know. And she's like, Oh, would you he's obviously known around the town. He's well known for looking after the kids. And she says, Look, I've got three youngsters. Would you be able to train them? And I think he's actually seen them in the schoolyard when he's driving on the on the bus. Oh, the bus, he sees and he's just dodging all these people and running around, giving people the you know, drop on the shoulder and leaving them for dead. And then when she asks him, he's like, Okay. And he says, you know, he chats him a bit, and s even then, even as he's something like six, seven years old, he's the cheeky as well. Like cocky little shit. But he's quite endearing still because he's young and he's like, okay, fine.

SPEAKER_04

Because he asked him, didn't he? He goes, Where'd you get that? Where'd you get that to to young Nazi? Where'd you get that sort of bruise on your on your cheek? And he goes, same place you got that big nose of yours, like and he likes him, Brendan. You know, he he he he likes, you know, straight talking people and that bit of character and cockiness.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he says, Right, we'll come down to the gym after school, but before dinner, come down. And for for weeks and weeks in in the gym, he's Well, the first time they turn up, they've got to sing. They've got to sing, yeah. Your initiation when you come to the gym, everyone first time and they're like, Well, we're not gonna sing, well, I don't want to do that. He says, Listen, if you can't sing in front of 30 lads, how the fuck are you gonna fight in front of thousands? So you get up and you sing. So the two of the the older brothers do some lame singing, but they do it. And as like, I don't sing, but I can dance, and he does some Michael Jackson kind of dancing.

SPEAKER_04

He goes, I'll let I'll let my kid do the the the talking and everything. He's got an answer for everything.

SPEAKER_03

And he watches his feet moving, he's like, All right, yeah, I've got something here.

SPEAKER_04

And and that's it. He he just puts him for weeks and weeks and weeks. He's just making him move his feet on the line, and eventually this because he's only seven or eight, like you know, he's saying, Well, I'm better than the others, like puts him in the ring.

SPEAKER_03

He says, Listen, I see a hundred lads coming here, yeah, and 98 of them I know aren't gonna make it, but I've seen your feet move and I know you've got what it takes. You've you've got a chance.

SPEAKER_04

So stick with me, do as you're told. And he puts him in the ring, he gets punched in the stomach, and he goes, When you can last a minute, you know, then you can you can put gloves on because you're not gonna hit at the moment, you just gotta avoid getting hit.

SPEAKER_03

And he has these this sort of five tenants of how to fight, doesn't he? Which he doesn't really tell you that till he till he teaches him the fifth one, which is power. Yeah. I guess first of all, it's movement and breathing and blah blah blah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, all the rest of it.

SPEAKER_03

Um and i it's incredibly racist area. Yes. That's what he's really coming up against is in the gym. First of all, there'll be a few comments, but his son actually, Brendan's son, is is got his back as well, and he goes to the same school, so they that he looks after him, and when anyone chaps up, there's always someone who's got his back, and then at that transitions then into trying to find a fight, and no one wants to see uh a Yemeni, they just they just call him Packy, they just they don't really have a clue about any sort of like culture where he's gonna be.

SPEAKER_04

Go home, that's all they want. But he's seen that you know he's got a this kind of swagger about him, and he's nurturing this kind of attitude and and this cockiness and and his his talent, and he's saying, you know, use use all this kind of aggression against you, don't you?

SPEAKER_03

He feels it all he he really encourages the cockiness, doesn't he? And he it does eventually get him into his first amateur fight. By putting like weights in his pockets.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, but he has to put some stones in his pockets to make the weight, seven stone seven. Yeah, who goes, right, if he makes the weight, okay, I'll put him in. And then he can't fight at the allotted time because it's prostitute. Which his son points out 703, he can't do it. Yeah, he goes, he can't do it, Daddy. Yeah, so alright, we'll get him on afterwards. And it soon kind of shuts him up. Before that, we've had the reporter come in and she's trying to interview another boxer who Brendan is taking on and is he's just getting famous and he's just starting to to w make some money and things. He kind of cuts ties. Yeah, he cuts the bins him off, yeah. W with Brendan and goes to do his own thing, and Brendan feels really let down by this and really kind of disappointed that he's given so much time and everything.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and it's um there's later on. The movie kind of sold me for I don't know when we get to the sort the crux of the movie later on. I don't know how to feel about it. Because essentially, Naz has his first fight, as there's a really like really, really young, and he he puts the guy down and he wins the fight, and then they're walking on the kind of heath or on the moors, wherever it is. Yeah. And he negotiates the thing, he says, Listen, you know, you stick with me, you learn all this stuff, you can go like right to the top. He's 12 years old at this time. And he's like, Oh, but yeah, really, I'll have two Ferraris, I'll have five Ferraris, but Madison they're talking about Madison Square Garden, they're talking about this, that, and the other. And he says, I listen, I'll I'll stick with you right through it all. Brendan says, I'll just take 25%. And I thought, fucking hell, that's a lot.

SPEAKER_04

It's it's a it's a huge it's a huge amount, and he sees that as like well. And even Naz is at 12 is like, fucking hell, like 25%. It's like you're gonna make 40 million. And for everybody else, though, listening in, or or you know, uh outside of this, it's just talk. But those two know that it's gonna happen. He can see the talent in him, and he can so single-minded, he's so good. Yeah, he's so arrogant. Of course I'm the best.

SPEAKER_03

And knows he's the best. He says, fine, you get me 40, I'll give you 10. Yeah. And they spit shake on it.

SPEAKER_04

It's done, it's a done deal. So this this is this is a done deal, and and they keep on getting it.

SPEAKER_03

And then you kind of it's a fairly then like Bog standard journey through him getting more fights, yeah, taking the next step up. There's a bit of uh crowds, crowds kind of recognising him. There's a bit of anger about when he's he's takes a big step up and won one of the fights, and they're like, It's too early for that, this guy's Premier League, you're still fighting like in the second division, and he fucking KOs him. Yeah. Then he has a real fiery one when he fights the Welsh guy for the is it the European title? Yeah, so he turns pro at 18 and I think it's European title at 19.

SPEAKER_04

And the actor who's who's playing Naz is is really good, isn't he? I mean he's he's really quite nails and he's gonna be able to do it. Practing his entrance into the ring, the flip into the ring, yeah, all that. And he's got yeah, he's got an answer for everybody who says, you know, oh why are you doing that? And he's going, well, to be the best, you know, you want to be remembered.

SPEAKER_03

And he also gets Frank Warren gets involved and he stokes the arrogance and all the he's talking about, you know, lad mags, I want you in the on the cover of FHM, you doing this. This is what people want now. You've got to be brash and big and in people's face. He's like, Yeah, fine, perfect. I'm banged by that.

SPEAKER_04

I'm all I'm all that anyway. And yeah, he's getting more fame now and more money. There's more external voices starting to come in. Um his brother, his elder brother, his his brother. You see, looking after him in their way, like looking after his money, his interests, and things. It was toxic that. But yeah, they they feel that Brendan's getting a bit too much.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you see it in a few post-fight interviews. So the first one, I think when he wins the one in in Wales where they're so against him, like you know, it's a Welsh fighter, he beats him, and the postman is, I just want to say a massive thank you. Frank Warren, the best promoter in the world, is absolutely amazing. Brendan, the coach, he's the best coach in the world, absolutely amazing. Next fight doesn't shout out Brendan. No, and you just start to see a few like bits of the relationship are starting to like chip away. He's he's two fucking billy big boys. He there's been a few question marks about how dedicated he is to training. Brendan's like, no, no, he just trains at like funny hours. He trains at the middle of the night and uh He's de he's defending me.

SPEAKER_04

He doesn't really want to see it go, and even his wife tries to tell him at one point, look, I think the relationship's changing. You used to spend a lot of time together and now not so much anymore. No, no, no, he doesn't want to have, you know, this problem of of Naz leaving him, but he doesn't really want to confront it and he's it's happening, they're drifting apart. And you know, these these two guys that have been on this seventeen year kind of journey, he's he's finally become the the champion in one of the fights where he's got the the Adidas shorts. He says, Look, Adidas are interested, all the big sponsors. They're only a world champion they want though, so you've got a win this one he goes okay. course he does But he celebrated like he's a done deal like yeah of course I'm gonna beat him yeah that that's that's it and and that's all thanks to to Frank Warren and his promoting and and everything.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah the He does win that fight and then straight away afterwards he's like oh everyone's going off to party and to celebrate is like I just need to speak to Brendan first and then it comes back later on and Brendan's like you don't find out exactly straight away but he's renegotiating he's like you're not getting 25% anymore. That's not happening.

SPEAKER_04

He doesn't say what it what it's standard rate and uh a fee after the fight but it ain't 25%. It isn't what we shook on twelve years ago or 15% they had they had estimated that he would make 40 million.

SPEAKER_03

I think at one point he says you're making like 15, 16 million a fight. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Or a year or whenever it's like an astronaut or seems um so there's a fallout then and he doesn't want to do it and you see he comes into Jimmy in a fucking like magnum.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Ben's like a title fight, you know, world title fight this is serious shit. You go in there unprepared you're just gonna get your ass kicked and he d and he says it in front of everyone in the gym and obviously Nassim doesn't like that. He doesn't like being giving a dressing down he's he's the big man. He's the best in the world. Yes you're the best in the world but there was a reason how you got there and it was by training and fucking being disciplined and putting it in. If you stop doing that you're fucking gonna lose you know we've seen it time and time before do you know what I mean? But he has a few more fights where he's able to get through just on his you know natural abilities.

SPEAKER_04

On his natural ability just to dodge punches and and it comes that that one day where Frank's at home with the family and they all know what's happened of course and his fight's on and he's settling down to watch it and well first of all they they they spar.

SPEAKER_03

And he's like well Nasim's like come on why don't you fucking spar me he's like alright fine and obviously gives him fucking hiding and the relationship is basically completely deteriorates to the point where then we see the the brother the older brother Riath I think his name is something like that and he's just a horrible cunt to him he's like listen you're you can fuck off you're getting nothing you get you know expenses and a flat fee all that that's it take it or leave it you're out and so he is out. He's out yeah yeah sparring and the like you say they they watch the it's the Brera fight because my missus didn't know that I was like well you know he does well till he comes up against the Mexicans and then it's like see you later.

SPEAKER_04

And Brendan will say a few times it's not about the money it's the recognition it's it's the fact he says I've been living in the same house for thirty years.

SPEAKER_03

All the money I get goes into the gym. Yeah you know me and my wife will be alright but they're living in a cat it's a cat's house. Yeah it's like a nothing special to up to that. He's not he's not living largely Lamborghini's parked out his place. He's um it's just to look after the kids just to funnel everything back and to try and do well for the for the community for the for the kids there to make everyone alright. And yeah so he's he's basically kicked into touch. He's got who is Manny who is the trainer the the famous trainer that he has? Manny someone yeah it's not Packy Pickett. No it's not Packy It's the famous close to all the big names and he's raging because Prince doesn't turn up when he's supposed to for training all this sort of shit. And basically goes into the Barrera fight just completely underprepared. Yeah. Just too arrogant to realise that this guy means business. He's hungry, he wants it and he ends up losing the the ones Yeah so they're watching it at home in Sheffield and Brendan you can see he's like they've had another falling out because he had written a book about basically everything that he'd done for Nassim and wanting some recognition and Naseem treats that as a betrayal because he's you know got a load of money from that and all Yeah exactly. Yeah. But he's still do really when you see him watching the fight he's not he's gutted that he's losing the fight. He's like what the fuck's he doing? He's not prepared you know he should be doing this should be falling back on this technical and there's two lads they're they're more just angry with Prince so they're happy that he's getting beaten yeah and he just goes and sits outside in the garden and his wife comes out and he's like I don't want him you know take no joy in that.

SPEAKER_04

No I'm not happy that he's losing. And then it comes to another fight in Madison's Queen When he gets he gets another and someone else rocks up at the gym doesn't he?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Some little black kid and they say I'm I'm I'm I'm I'm want you to trade me to be like the next champion my name's Kel. Oh it's Cal Brook So he's got you know he's he's got a few others but he had I think he had four or five champions yeah because they did they did a name drop at the end. But yeah there's a there's another fight isn't there and this is Nassim's retired at this point. He never 'cause he retired at twenty eight.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah yeah he retired I think was it after he might have had one more fight I think he had a couple of goes and the Mexicans were just too good for him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But he wasn't it just wasn't dedicated enough. Yeah. But Frank Warren's got Brendan along ringside and across the other side of the ring is Prince Nassim and they there's some sort of fuck up and as they said oh Frank we need you there's something hell I'll be back in a minute. He plays quite well they just like catch each other's eye don't they Brendan and Prince and they're like and they have a word going clear the air in the locker room like in in a kind of laundry room and this is when I was because I've been like oh he's been a fucking prick the whole time that's him and he's like when he says his piece I'm like fucking he's probably right yeah yeah yeah yeah he's right I mean he said I was twelve Brendan you're taking me taking twenty steal with me taking twenty five percent when I was twelve years old everything after that was a completely transactional no it was a that was transaction you were just after money and they both kind of say things that he's so he says I never I put it all back in the gym he says I never made you know that his says this piece and he he says I had to write the book because you know I had to put my my story across and blah blah blah and then it goes back to the ringside bit and someone comes along and goes Frank there's been a fuck up we need you and he's oh for fuck's sake and you're like whoa what and then they they look at each other across the thing and then Frank comes back and says I fucking saw that and it never happened they never had that conversation basically the conversation it's just in his head thinking oh you know that's what I would say to him if I had a chance and I did see an interview with Naz about this film who said that he he and his wife were in a hotel and they saw the director of the film and the writer I think he was the writer and director of the the film in the in the hotel and he said he went over to him and he said I'll give him a big hug he said for that last part of the film I wish we'd have done that you know he said I hugged him because they never reconciled whatever fight they're out you know that kind of that kind of goes and then it just says like Brennan died so they never recognized quarantine or whatever they never reconciled there was a big like national uh big sort of day of mourning in Sheffield where his he was paraded round and everyone came out of the streets of Sheffield to give him a send off and OBE is what you'd been given some sort of honours recognised for his boxing work and work and as well as the other champions that Yeah done Kel Brook and done some other some other fighters as well. And yeah I mean the boxing And then it says so they never exile but after he died, you know Prince Nassim did then give a heartfelt kind of like he did he did a lot for me you know and he gave him I thought because they I thought he was going to be a pall bearer because they showed his coffin again and I thought oh maybe he's one of the ones you know no. And it's only a little anyway.

SPEAKER_00

So it it was seen him recently well wide but not all yeah he's a unit now.

SPEAKER_03

Like wide yeah he's a yeah he's I think that might have been him driving up there. He's because you know he he smashed his car into someone got done driving 90 miles an hour paralyzed someone. Really?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah he's not I don't think he's a good and then I think that guy or somebody in his family ended up crashing into his wife right afterwards like you know but they realised that was just an accident but he thought it was revenge as well. But yeah that as far as his boxing career he was a devastating fighter and there's no doubt I think anybody would recognise you know if somebody's trained you from seven years old to, you know, eighteen and you've got to be a professional fighter then that talent had obviously been nurtured and he'd taken him and and and led him on the on the right way of doing things. Whether he'd have got there anyway, you know, I mean it hardly I'm sure he would have um he would have he was obviously a very talented but he was a talented boxer but he was obviously a very talented trainer as well because he did it with other you know boxers and he he trained them to become what I think he basically rejects him for he doesn't he says it's it's my gifts are from Allah not from you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah so I was yeah I didn't look into like who commissioned like you know it wasn't it didn't seem to me like it was something that Prince Nassim would have gone out and said made this film about mate. It is completely independent. To me it's more even Brendan's film really. Yeah I think so yeah. But the fights look pretty good. The the fellow that plays all the ones that play because you get him at various different ages yeah all the all the people that play Prince Nassim are very good.

SPEAKER_04

They are yeah yeah particularly the the main guy as an adult absolutely because they they sort of make a thing about his his weight don't they when they see him when he when they have the sort of imagined reconciliation and he says oh nice suit and he goes yeah you know I've had a few and you think fucking oh have a look at him now I've had a few made up yeah um and yeah it I mean two two stubborn men you know who as I say didn't didn't unfortunately reconcile their their differences after having such a a success and influence on each other's lives but what did you think of the movie side?

SPEAKER_03

I thought it was pretty paint by numbers to be honest. Yeah I there was n although Nassim was obviously a like a real showman in the ring and a good fighter and stuff I was never really a fan of him because I thought he was a dickhead to be honest. Yeah it was too arrogant and too like in your face as that other lad who fights like him I mean well certainly saw him a couple years ago didn't like him either. And it's it's nothing really that remarkable I I like I really like Piers Bosn in it that he was really good. I think the performance was actually good across the board but it didn't it doesn't stand out in any way.

SPEAKER_04

No I mean it's I I like a sports movie. Yeah me too in any way I'll I'll probably watch it anyway. Yeah it's watchable you know I think comes in about an hour and I'll be it's on prime anyway I've seen it on prime it's easy to watch. It's uh it it wasn't it didn't have me hooked all the way through it. I I did like the the bits at the beginning and it had all the parts of of a good story. I think you know maybe some of the the actual story itself made it less enjoyable for me because he didn't give him maybe the credit and and Brendan did take advantage of a a young lad really when he shouldn't have done any of that. You know he should have you know permission with the family and and let's make a better deal and it and it comes down to money. Well the family seemed to come down his side anyway when they try she's like you apologise to Brendan you know you a very traditional kind of Muslim family and you know he would he went to them. But the brothers saw that he was getting more money than other trainers certainly and and things like fucking oh what's the footballer was it Arsenal the brother was his agent in the fucking deck in Elka Yeah so the brothers was were starting to you know make financial decisions and and for him and and exposed what you know he'd been doing as far as taking advantage. Because it is you know it's it's crazy money. Oh it's only that one fight he lost it a 36 and one record Mohammed and other boxers as good, great or goat. I saw that and he put himself down as good you know he w he wasn't somebody you know he now reflecting on the on his do it really outside of the UK really did he I don't think no.

SPEAKER_03

They don't actually go into that detail. They show a few fights that they'd run in Cardiff and Well I think it's more about the life rather than the boxing because he kind of did I think he realised very quickly that fucking hell there's people out there that can really hit and once you you know you're not maybe what is it banter weight featherweight it's tough once you've made once you've made a load of money just stay hungry stay you know putting the hours in in the gym but the weight man can you imagine look I've I've never had to be on weight but I mean we w when I was playing football and we I was playing quite like whatever professionally whatever you want to call it we would get the medicals done every three months.

SPEAKER_00

And if we would fluctuate in those three months with more than 1.5 kilos you would be called in the office and be like what's going on? Just get weight before pre-season and then every three months and then back when we was when I was especially as a kid when we would be it would be every six months with the club team and when you go to the national team you would get every three months and with the national team you get not just the blood, the weight, the height, the teeth, the Really fucking uh electrocardiogram, you get the encephalogram, the thing that where they do with the head when you go the national team they do the the thing I can't I don't know how you call it in English where you blow the thing and it has to stay as well. Your line capacity yeah yeah the lung capacity you do but you do the lung capacity status you'd go on the bike for three minutes then you do it then you do 10 pushups and 10 cross fit and then go again and then do that to measure the capacity with all the sensors on your wrists and on your ankles there's there were loads of tests being done back home plus every six months piss and the the stool sample every six months.

SPEAKER_04

Was this just for you because I saw you're a bit of a one we all had to go and do it.

SPEAKER_00

All of us I'm just kidding. And and the the same with the weight for for for me with this these guys we at football you can you know all right but for these guys the the the bigger you are and the more you lose weight the more advantage you have because the more power you're gonna have so you lose water. Can you imagine? Like you that's where you see these guys that all these boxes and you know UFC fighters and whatever jockeys but no but you see the boxes that they balloon to they fight at I don't know 55 kilos but they walk around at 80.

SPEAKER_04

Well Naz is definitely ballooned then I mean he more of a heavyweight these days he he's definitely made up from that skinny slip of a a lad who was springing over the top rope into the into the ring and you know had that very distinctive style which yeah love him or hate him you remembered him which was what Frank Warren in this movie was all about he was you know making money which he did do but it was a shame the story as a the fact that it didn't didn't end well that's the truth and that bit at the end where he he has that that conversation. Because they hug and they cry together and they hug and they cry together if that had ended like if that had been true I I might have enjoyed the film a little bit more but the fact that it was in there was great but actually that's not the way that it ended yeah the film was was okay I wouldn't rush to watch it again certainly anytime surely it's not a big budget though. No.

SPEAKER_03

There isn't really that data available but I wouldn't say so BFI sort of couple of million for peers.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah that's it's no there's no actual hammered footage and and also they don't they don't go outside they don't really do like any you know it's not like they had to go on site to Mauritania or something.

SPEAKER_03

It's just no I don't think they really went to Madison Square Garden either. No.

SPEAKER_04

No I would give it a sort of moderate to strong recommend. Moderate to strong yeah I think it's not quite a knockout but it's still an interesting story. Yeah you know you could you could probably go the distance with it another week another pod done strong exactly we've got some more NOMs it will see what happened a full compliment of dad's next week.

SPEAKER_00

Or or we think for yeah we'll be I think it's my turn this yeah go for it. Maybe do it we'll have a I don't have anything written down now but oh come on Chris come on it's right there will be something I am I was actually thinking for a while because I obviously we did uh say about this that I might do either just a one actor or one director thing that we can do some thought going in something like that that is uh obviously it has to be someone with a bit of a body of Clint Howard I don't know who that is but well we've got a week to find out. But we'll figure it out yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Nice all that remains is to say tidy signing out.

SPEAKER_00

Has gone
