Cop Land
This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Dan is away again, so Sidey, Reegs and Cris tackle Cop Land, James Mangold's 1997 crime drama starring Sylvester Stallone as the half-deaf sheriff of a New Jersey town where the cops from New York all live. It is Sidey's first time watching it, and the lads agree the cast is mental, with Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta surrounded by faces from The Wire, The West Wing and The Sopranos.
They talk through the story, from a young cop's faked suicide off the bridge and a crew that thinks it is above the law, to De Niro's internal affairs man trying to recruit a reluctant Stallone, Liotta's burnt-down house and a rooftop murder, and a long final shootout in which Stallone, deafened by a gunshot next to his ear, finally takes on the whole crew. Along the way they enjoy the deli-sandwich stance, the Springsteen needle drops and Robert Patrick's stare into the camera.
The lads also pick at the plot, with slightly too many storylines and a lot of cops in New York at the end, but the main complaint is that with a cast this good they wanted more, enough for a ten-hour season of The Sopranos. They finish with the budget, the box office, Stallone's Best Actor win in Stockholm and his comedy flops, and Cris's confession that he enjoyed Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot at the cinema as a kid.
There are no scores this week, but the verdict is a strong recommend from all three, and a clear contrast to the other film they watched.
We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.
Until next time, we remain...
Bad Dads
Police Copland. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Copland.
SPEAKER_02I believe it or not, I'd never seen this before. I think because it followed quite closely after Goodfellas. 1997, this was. And I think I also was like being a snob about can it be any good if it's got Stallone in it?
SPEAKER_03Was it Goodfellas 95 or 94?
SPEAKER_01It's a kind of time in it. That is the interesting thing about this, because the legacy, I think, of this movie was people watching it going, oh right, fuck, Stallone can act. And now we take it for granted that you don't think of him like as not being an actor. But of course he does act in Rocky and stuff, like he does, of course he does. But this was the first time that I guess people took him sort of seriously. Well, he's in a proper cast.
SPEAKER_02Like this is a huge ensemble cast.
SPEAKER_01A massive cast, by the way. You basically take Robert De Niro, Harvey Kaitel, Rayleigh Otter, and then you surround them with the cast of The Wire, The West Wing, The Sopranos. Yeah. It's just like mental how good the cast is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I do remember that being a thing. And so, yeah, this is my first time watching it. I think we get an intro little quick voiceover from De Niro introducing the town.
SPEAKER_01We get some shots, don't we, of New York and and then the bridge and moving away towards Garrison, and they sort of explain the setup, which is about the transit cops, isn't it? The police who are allowed to live outside New York City in this kind of one, not even a one-horse town, 1,250 people there, and it's like the safest gig in America, basically. It's a police cop town.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And every town like this has got its own bar.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which is just for blues. Yeah. No one else goes in, and then we see Stallone there, he's playing the pinball machine. It's his birthday. Yeah, and he sort of looks over and Rayleigh Otter's talking to him.
SPEAKER_01It's a cop pinball machine, which is important because kind of being a policeman is a bit of a fantasy for him in some sort of way. Yeah, because he's he's a sheriff. I mean He's the sheriff of cop land. Yeah. It's like the safest gig in the world.
SPEAKER_02Which I think is De Niro's title drop later on. Yeah. Yeah. Rayleigh Otter's talking to Edie Falco from The Surprise. And just handing over a bag. Yeah. Like an NYPD sort of duffel bag. And obviously Stallone clocks it.
SPEAKER_01It's never clear the whole way through what's in the bag or what the No, whether he is actually taking in what's happening or whether he's a doofus and ignoring it. Like it's really ambiguous. Because he's seen so many things.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I took it that he he was impotent and he knew.
SPEAKER_01And also he adulates these guys that he works around that they can be the policeman that he can't, because as we'll find out much later, he's deaf from an accident that occurred saving somebody when he was younger. Yeah. And it's prevented him from being the police officer. He's a sheriff, but not a police officer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then so we get like a couple of quick drink driving incidents. Oh my god, everybody and he's hammered. Is it Rayleigh Otter that sends him on his way?
SPEAKER_00He has to go back to the city. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He'll be fine. He'll be fine.
SPEAKER_01He has to go get some quarters for the Dukebox. So he breaks open the uh.
SPEAKER_02He says, Are you sure you're okay to drive? He's like, Yeah, I'll be fine. And sure enough, if he's not fine, there's a deer jumps out into the road and he's sort of almost well he's just he's just looking at the city, isn't he? He's looking at the city.
SPEAKER_01He's distracted by the bridge, he's thinking about where that where it happened.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and and then he looks at the road and just sort of careers off the road and hits a tree and gets a broken nose, isn't he? Yeah. Then we kind of basically get transported across the bridge then to we meet Michael Rappaport's superboy character. He's leaving. We've been told already that loads of people are on away that night, they're at a bachelor party. Yeah. And he's leaving the strip club. He's had enough, and he hears some sort of commotion, like a little scuffle or something in it, which he goes to investigate, and it's two of the guys like just chundering and had too much. But I think one of them's T1000, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but Patrick Robert Patrick.
SPEAKER_02I think we'll say Patrick Stewart because of this week. Robbie Patrick, is it Robert Patrick, and he's like, oh, that's you guys, and they sort of reference that he's the golden boy and whatever.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and the other guy as well though, what's his name? He's in the sopranos, he's fucking an amazing actor. And Ang Nangarella or something is his last name.
SPEAKER_03Anyway. Yeah, they they're like, oh, just drive safe, beef safe, whatever, and he just drives he's on his way to wherever he lives.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's going through just down the road. Well he's hammered as well.
SPEAKER_01He's hungry. He's drunk as well, and and his car undertakes him on the sort of freeway. And I think smashes into it. It completely chaos the side of his car. And this black guy leans out. I wasn't sure what he pointed at him.
SPEAKER_02Right, so he shows his ID and says Pull over. Pull over, police officer. And the guy goes, No. And points something out of it. Which watching it first, I just was sure it was just a rock machine gun or something. And then he just goes no and and he's like, Fucking hell, the ball's on this guy. And they just bomb it off.
SPEAKER_01As he's as he points the thing at him as well, the guy's back tire blows, so he thinks he's been shot at.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so anyway, they barrel it off, and they're obviously fucking high as kites, and he chases him down, fires like six lucky shots basically out through the front of the room. They all hit the car. And they all hit the car, and the car just kind of spins, he's like, Oh fuck, he's killed everyone in the car, like with those shots. And then the rest of the crew will descend. It'll become a but he also crashes, he crashes into them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So then it cuts to the aftermath where they are both dead, and you think, Oh fuck, is he dead as well?
SPEAKER_01But no, he's Oh, it's a steering wheel lock. Here we go. There it is. Oh, yes, yeah, the thing, paper lock. Yeah. Yeah. So anyway, they all the emergency services turn up, the paramedics, everybody's there at the scene trying to work out like what's happened, and the crew turn up and they don't find a weapon in the world.
SPEAKER_02It's also he is Radio Otter's nephew. No. No, Harvey Kaitel. Sorry, I meant I was thinking of him, I said the wrong name. So he's got Connect. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then this is when another right. Not only have you got all these brilliant actors, you've got all the character actors as well. You've got John Spencer turns up from the West Wings Brother. Yeah. And Bruce Altman is the lawyer later as well. Oh god, the cast.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's Robert Patrick then just pulls out some sort of thing. It's an interesting thing.
SPEAKER_01He's like, oh look what I found.
SPEAKER_03Found it. It was under the he's like, oh no, it was under the the paramedic straight away just laughs in the room.
SPEAKER_01The paramedic is like that is fucking bullshit.
SPEAKER_02You can't do that. So you have a proper fucking rumble about it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And in the background of all this rapper pause character suddenly is like edging towards the bridge, and then Harvey Coitel's like, oh my god, he jumped. But it's not the calmest jump in the world.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I know.
SPEAKER_02I actually reranned it to watch it back. Like, did he jump? Yeah. You don't hear anything. No. And they're looking at it. And they're all looking. Oh, we need to, you know.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the body's already gone, he's saying dredge the fucking river. Yeah. You know. And again, but because you're watching this thinking, nobody's gonna fall for it. And they don't, like the paramedic, it's like, you've got to be you're taking a piss, basically, aren't you?
SPEAKER_02Like they've just like, I don't know what they'd actually done, but like shimmered him round the behind chucked him in the boot of a car. Fucked him off, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So And then the next day is uh Stallone and the policewoman, they're clocking up the speed. Janine Garoff, another clocking up the speed, and then they see a car. Someone does 70, like in a country level.
SPEAKER_0125 miles, yeah. Stallone waves the first one through, it's 50, can't be bothered. And then the next one he's like, even he, the she's looking at him like, you can't just let them do that in the town. So they do pull him over, but it turns out to be Robert Patrick and the guy's name, I've forgotten it again, but the T1000. Yeah, well, Kaitel's in the case.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Harry Kaitel.
SPEAKER_02That goes the Garuffalo. And he's like, Listen, when you see that badge on the back, you just fuck off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you didn't he's really condescending. Yeah, he's just like this is with proper police work here, Darling and all this stuff. Yeah, pat her on the head.
SPEAKER_03And then he's like, Oh, she she's really pretty.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And you're like, just fuck off. And then Stallone turns up and she's sort of half expecting him to back her up.
SPEAKER_03And he does, and he like really undermines her, and because they're quite horrible, and he just sort of And also undermines himself because basically the guys are telling him what's what and who's who, and he just kind of sits there and is like, okay, well, I guess you're right.
SPEAKER_01It's a mixture of like he looks up to these guys and he's really intimidated by them as well.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So but anyway, as they're driving off, Michael Rappaport's character suddenly peeks his head up out the back to look out. Yeah. And again, it's another one of those things as did Stallone re did he clock it or not? Did he yes? Oh, he definitely did that one. Yeah, that one he felt like.
SPEAKER_03I think for me, until then I was a bit like, is he just a simpleton? And he's actually the sheriff. But when you see him looking at that guy, and then he clearly knows that the guy's alive, he clearly didn't jump off a bridge, he knows he's alive. And yeah, because it's everywhere on the news.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, his face of the newspaper, his face. Because this guy was uh Michael Rappaport's character was a hero copy, saves six black children or whatever from the fire. Yeah. So his face is everywhere.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's front page, it's on the every news bulletin, and then when there's a police funeral, that's obviously a big deal as well. And they do have the funeral. They do? Where someone asks, What's in there? Because they've they've obviously not found a body, is that they just put his uniform in. Yeah, yeah, it's a suit.
SPEAKER_01So after the funeral, in town turns up Robert De Niro, he's Moe Tilden, he's an internal affairs investigator. Really popular with Copy Kaitel that when they were at Yeah, police academy. He's got a shit name though. Mo. Mo. And they there's immediately like this horrible air between them because he's like, Oh, you left because of a woman and all this. Okay, is that how you remember it?
SPEAKER_02That's how it went down right.
SPEAKER_01It's like all this, it's so macho as well, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02The There's do you notice they're sitting not sitting there, so they're standing at those tables. Yeah. There's a there's a stance. I could demo it on the bar here, where whether they're eating a sandwich, but they they s their legs are right back and then they lean forward so they don't spit anything down there. Okay. There's like loads of them in the especially Italian places for their deli, deli sandwiches, you know. Yeah. There's a particular way that you eat them. Yeah. Okay. I clock them doing it in the film. Nice. Yeah, because they're they have that standoff with with Mo. And he think he he then goes to see Stallone because he knows they're at it. Like, there's no they've obviously got an ongoing like file. I mean, it's it's really obvious.
SPEAKER_01You see this happening. This town is corrupt as fuck. Like it's just run by these people, these cops who think they're above the law.
SPEAKER_03It's not only that, he they they all have loans and mortgages with the same two banks who are connected to the the Italian mob. So and that's what uh De Niro says to Stallone.
SPEAKER_01He shows him a photo of Tony Sirico, Paulie Walnuts. That's the he only appears in it in two photos, doesn't he? That's it. But he's like, This is the top guy of the mob that they all owe money to. So he tries to tell Stallone, come my come in, come if you see anything, here's my card. He's fairly gentle about it. Yeah. But Stallone's like, No. No, just clearly I don't know. He'd rather sweep it all under the carpet, keep things maintain the status quo.
SPEAKER_02We do get the explainer of what's happened to Stallone. He goes to literally under the bridge like fucking chili peppers song, and he gets the flashback to what happened, and he's just in his car, isn't he? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And just he's stu at the side, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02And he hears a commotion and he just looks up, and a car just fucking ploughs off the bridge into the water, and he's like, that's unusual. He dives in. We see it in different stages like the movie, we don't see it's all explained straight away. But we have been told he'd lost his hearing, and then you see him, he goes into the car as it is completely submerged. And he sort of uses the side of his head to break through the window to get this girl out, and then she's the one that's then married to this other fucking lunatic.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Peter Berg's character, Randoni, he's like another one of the cops.
SPEAKER_03Well, he's shagging Harvey Kaito's missus. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But he's He comes around here soiling my sheets. Yeah. And also he really fancies her and he sort of never gave up on his love for her like marry this asshole cop. Getting beaten up or having to at least defend herself. So Rayleigh Otter's character, Figzy, he sort of gets ostracised from the circle after they fall out on. Don't cut me out. It's about what happened to their one of them other members of the gang, isn't it? Yeah. And he's completely ostracised from the group. He he s shoves that what is it like a pencil? It's a dart. So he takes a dartboard out and shoves it up his nose. Right up his nose. Look really horrible.
SPEAKER_02I was wondering if they if like Robert Patrick had said to him, just fucking go for it. Just go for it. Because it looks like he had a fucking dart right up his fucking hood.
SPEAKER_01It'll really pay for the horrible. So and after that, he's like persona non grata, basically, and the rest of the gang.
SPEAKER_02He looks like shit in this radar as well.
SPEAKER_01In the cell, yeah, the police he does. Quarters. It's like. And he likes a bit of the white powder, as Stallone's character will find out when he offers him a place to stay, and there's like coke on his mirror in the morning when he does.
SPEAKER_03So but he's uh basically involved with this I'm gonna say Latina girl, and that's where they kind of tell him, he's like, mate, he's like, don't kick don't let me out, don't kick me out. But he's like, you're meant to sleep with them, not run a methadone center with them. Yeah. So I don't know, the implication is that he was sleeping with a smackhead and they fell in love. But then we get the his house gets burned down. Yes. But she's in it.
SPEAKER_02It was a terrible accident.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, it's a terrible accident, and the house is burned down, and we will find out later that he will get a $200,000 check.
SPEAKER_01Well it was Figsie himself who did it, although the implication is it was at the time that it's like the crew doing it to him. Well, I thought immediately it was the guy who was at the dart of his nose, yeah. Yeah. No, he Figsy did it himself for the insurance money and he didn't know that his were gonna be in there. Yeah. And he'll actually fuck off like a coward.
SPEAKER_03He's one of them that keeps telling Stallone about you they fuck them. They they're you know, they they think they can do this, you you you need to stand up for yourself, you can't keep let them doing this, they're running or all by you, blah blah blah blah blah. And I think meanwhile, Harvey Kaitel calls the mayor's office or someone uses his connections to stop the get the case buried. Yeah, to bury the case.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Motas that really well. He just starts shouting everyone. Go to lunch.
SPEAKER_01The guy's like, I just had a side. Go to the fucking lunch! And just chucking all the files on the floor, sort of filing them, but then it just gets annoyed. But as a although the case has gone away, the order on from on high has been like rapper paw's gotta go, like he's too. Yeah, I mean I was thinking you can't just have this guy running around. And they have this big house party, don't they? And then afterwards he's like, So I'm going off to like witness protection or whatever, and yeah, yeah, yeah. Well the there's the full guard.
SPEAKER_02Joby Kaitel's wife gives it, hands him a drink and says, This this is yours. Yeah. I want you to have this. Yeah. And he's like, Oh, thanks. Like, no, I want you to have this. And then it's not until he goes to the Lua, I think, and he's goes to pick up the glass again. He can see she's written a message on the napkin. He's like, You're gonna be killed. Yeah. And he still goes out.
SPEAKER_01Well, what's choice? He does at least arm himself. I thought he'd just go out the other door and just fucking do it. And they want to meet him by the I mean, if he hadn't figured this out though, they were like, Oh yeah, let's go meet by the by the pool. There's the four of them there, and they attempt to drown him, but they don't realise that he's got a weapon and so he's able to discharge it and then flee.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Which is obviously a big problem for them all. He does turn up at Stallone's gaff, doesn't he? And then sees Ray Liotta there and he just bolts. He thinks Ray's still in with the crew. Yeah. Yeah. So gets cold feet and does a runner into the woods.
SPEAKER_01And at this point, Randoni's against it. When they're so they're trying to they're trying to find Michael Rappaport's character, they're all out to kill him, they tell Randoni, and he's a bit like, nah, he's a cop, he's one of us. Like, what are you doing? So then he's off. They set him up with the method man. Yeah. He's got like one eye.
SPEAKER_03What's his name in this film?
SPEAKER_01One sort of completely blank eye, and obviously the gold teeth. You said the character's name was Shondell. Shondell. Shondell. He's terrifying and he hangs Peter Berg off a building. Yeah. And they're going up to try and save him, and he's like fumbling with the door locks, and he's going, boss, boss, just shoot.
SPEAKER_03Should I bring the door and he's like, oh no, I can do it, I can do it.
SPEAKER_01And then just enough for Method Man to throw him off the building, and Peter Berg's character is dead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's splattered on the floor. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this is I think it's at this point where Freddie is finally like, all right. I've got he's had multiple opportunities really to kind of tell people what he knows, what he's seen, what he's already figured out, and he didn't do it. And now he goes over to see Mo Tilden and he's like, Oh, I'm ready to turn witness, sort of thing. And he this is when he's eating the sandwich, De Niro's, Well, you had your chance, you blew it, you blew it, he says to him, You're just like you're shit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, as he walks off then, he has title dropped him earlier. He says, You're the you're the sheriff of Cobland. As he walks off, he says to his mate, he's like, if he goes messy here, we could be back on this case, could be back on. So he's waiting for him to just fucking something. Yeah. Because this this crew are now just so fucking out of control. The place is unmanageable now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So and and this is also where he realized just how far the corruption goes that Tilden is his only like that yeah, that De Niro's character really is his only avenue, and there's nobody else.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he can't go to speak to anyone else. Yeah. So then then I think he goes to Harvey Kaito's wife to say where is Superboy?
SPEAKER_01I know he hasn't been watching the movie because if he had been, he'd have noticed so many ostentatious shots of the water tower all the way through it, and he'd have guessed by that already that that's where Michael Rappaport's character, because he's not watching the movie, he has to hear that he was.
SPEAKER_03And then he goes and tells Harvey Kaitel and the boys to say, look, I'm a man, I'm gonna take him in tomorrow, 6 a.m. Yeah, taking him in. Yeah. Which is ill advised, I'm gonna say, considering he has no allies.
SPEAKER_01Ballsy. So he loads himself up with a shotgun and they they're at the It's Noah Emerich, I think, is the uh deputy, isn't he? Who stays to help him? Yeah. I think does he get blown away as they're exiting the uh police station? Because it kicks off a sort of 10-minute action sequence there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure he was just by himself. They just shoot a gun next to Right by his ears to deafen him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. To completely deafen him. Which I'm thinking, well, yeah, but he could have also just shot him. Yeah. So he's he's now got this and we hear it through the the the the sound effect of the movie.
SPEAKER_01This really's already been a good sh scene earlier at the fair where they're ta taking the piss out of him a bit and he demonstrates what a great fucking shot he is. Yes, when he's which is ties into what happens in the final, I think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so he's now he's really disorientated because he's deaf effectively. Yeah. They've got this ringing sound and obviously like just dazed. But as they sort of they they do it video game style, we just get one person attacking you at a time.
SPEAKER_01I think is it there's a shotgun blast.
SPEAKER_02No, there's a guy next to the car first who he takes down, yeah. And he gets shot actually in the shoulder then, yeah. Stallone. Yeah. And then he takes Robert Patrick out. It's a great expression on his face when he gets hit. He's brilliant, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's like staring right at the camera.
SPEAKER_02It's like and then he has to shut the second time he has to shoot the guy by the car, and then he goes into the gaff and starts taking everyone else out.
SPEAKER_01And then it's Harvey Kaitel's on the floor, isn't he? Dying. Yeah. And he starts he's saying something, but it and he's just like, I can't hear you, right? It's such a fucking cold line, isn't it? Because he's saying something, yeah. So and then he just dies with him not being understood. Yeah. And then he takes him into New York, and he's like he's like shell-shocked, he's got PTSD at this point. He's like, Hold on.
SPEAKER_03Some parade, or was it just happened to be a million cops everywhere in New York? I can't remember now that you say I can't you know what I mean though, because there's so many while he's taking Superboy in to see De Niro. There's loads, there's an army of cops everywhere.
SPEAKER_01There is, there is a lot of cops. So yeah, I think it's maybe they've just heard about what's happened, or I don't know. He's he brings him in anyway for for rapidly.
SPEAKER_03Or they're trying to stop him, or I can't remember, because it was just like, let him through, let him through, and then at the end is De Niro and his boys just kind of, oh yeah, finally you came to your senses and you're delivering, he's alive. Oh what a miracle.
SPEAKER_01And he turns state witness, they eventually take him off him, and then we sort of get a little epilogue where he's back as sheriff.
SPEAKER_02Sheriff, yeah, he's not the way he started, yeah. We do moan quite a lot about films that are too long. Yeah. I think this could just benefit by being longer. It certainly had s slightly too many plots going on. For the for the cast that's in it and the amount of stuff that's going on. I you know, if this is like an episode a season of Sopranos or something, this would be ten hours, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yes, in some ways it was slightly less than the sum of its parts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so really I really enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_01It's good, yeah, because there's so many good actors. So much to enjoy it.
SPEAKER_03Not for 1997, but also an unusual story with the fact that they all live together and all the subplots of he's shagging his missus, she's sleeping. Yeah, and you don't see much of the mob.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's just the police, you know, or the corruption.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think it it's it's interesting to watch like how long he'll do nothing. So watch all this unfold and do nothing about it, and then if you know, that's m the more the most interesting part of it is watching him be in the world, and then it the violence at the end is just a little cherry of the body.
SPEAKER_02It's too late by the time he does intervene, there's so much bad shit that's gone on. Yeah. The whole thing that's kicked off is it's about Radiota's partner, isn't it? That's what the he had I guess he was the one cop who didn't like it.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03And he was going to bring it back down. And he died.
SPEAKER_02And that's why he keeps sh making them look at his photo on the wall. That's when he gets the dart. That's why he's making them look at your battery. You look at him in the photo, you know, you look at him.
SPEAKER_01So that's where it's all s sort of unwound from. So but Stallone doesn't look out of place amongst this really brilliant ensemble cast at all, does he? And he is c his character is interesting and is the glue of the movie, so he also gets laid.
SPEAKER_03Yes. So with this lady that he saved twenty years ago. Yeah. So that's not bad. Yeah. Happy days. He's not looking like Peak Stallone in the street. No, he's got a bit of a yeah, he's he's got a bit of a big gut and the character is kind of a bit useless.
SPEAKER_01Slow, I guess, is what they would have said in the old days. In the old days. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I'm told that the budget for this was 15 million, which seems really light to this cast.
SPEAKER_03It's 1997 though.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Even still. Still. It did just under 64 million globally. Okay, well everyone got paid then.
SPEAKER_01Everyone got paid. Mangold himself went on to do quite a lot. He went on to do some Marvel stuff, didn't he? He was the Wolverine director, I think, and some other He did the Jesse James cowboy Robert Ford. Oh the coward. Cowardly Robert Ford Jesse James. The Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. Scored by Nick Caim, I think. Okay. So he went on to do quite a lot. And you can see that, because it it is it's short.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this is fucking I watched the the two films we watched this week. This is like it looks great, another one did not.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, this is slick, yeah, it's good. But it's it's a it's a level of barcast as well, and and it's good. I'm recommended.
SPEAKER_02My notes tell me that this was a deliberate change of direction for Stallone after his comedy flops, Oscar from 1991, which I think hell is terrible. And the following year, Stop or My Mum will shoot.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I actually went to the cinema to see. As a kid, I actually quite enjoy that as a as a kid, I'm not gonna lie. Is it Danny DeVito in that? Stop my mum will shoot.
SPEAKER_02Is it? Oh, I just remember it's the woman from Goonies. Yeah, the Golden Girls, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Anyway, I Oh yeah, no, he's the Goonies, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I've seen that then it's uh as a kid, I was only young as well.
SPEAKER_02Stallone won Best Actor at the Stockholm International Film Awards for this. Yeah. Not the not the Oscars. Also, props to Springsteen songs in this. Yes. He's just lying around like moping in the evenings, isn't he thinking about all the shit that's gonna be?
SPEAKER_01He pays on vinyl, actually, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's doing needle drop on the drive all night and stolen car from the river double album. Nice. Strong recommend for that. Strong recommend for the film too. Yeah, Cotland. Yeah, this was good, yeah. This was good. Strong.
