Midweek Mention... Kingpin

Midweek Mention... Kingpin

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan, Reegs and Cris take on Kingpin, the Farrelly brothers’ 1996 bowling comedy starring Woody Harrelson as hook-handed washed-up pro Roy Munson, Randy Quaid as unlikely Amish bowling prodigy Ishmael Boorg, Vanessa Angel as hustling escapee Claudia, and Bill Murray delivering what Dan reckons is one of his very best performances as the magnificently awful Ernie “Big Ern” McCracken.

The dads walk through the film from the bowling-prodigy opening in Ocelot, Iowa, through Roy’s destruction at the hands of Ernie McCracken’s hustle, into seventeen years of Scranton hovel life as a hook-handed, booze-pickled bowling-supply salesman paying rent in the most gruesome ways possible to Lin Shaye’s Mrs. Dumars. From there it is on to the Amish community, the infiltration as Brother Hezekiah, the discovery that both the family farm and the Reno tournament need the same half a million dollars, and one of the most quotable road-movie trios of the nineties piling into one car and hustling their way across America.

A big chunk of the episode goes on Bill Murray. The dads lose their minds over Ernie’s comb-over, the bowling-ball rose, the “Not you” ad-lib, Room 1103, the fake philanthropy, the groping of passing fans and the sheer joy of watching one of the great comic actors play one of the great comic villains. They also give proper credit to Woody Harrelson as the perfect straight-man audience proxy, Randy Quaid’s quietly brilliant Ishmael, Vanessa Angel’s Claudia going from Stanley Osmanski’s micro-dress distraction to the moral and strategic brain of the group, and the Farrellys’ nineties willingness to point the camera at anything that will make you laugh and grimace at the same time.

The dads particularly enjoy the film’s refusal to go full underdog victory. Roy loses the final by one pin, Claudia disappears with the hustled money to protect him from Stanley’s heavies, and the real triumph is Roy pouring every bottle of Jim Beam he owns down the sink in his bedsit. Then Claudia comes back with the doubled road money, Roy produces half a million dollars from a Trojan Condoms endorsement as “The Rubber Man,” and the farm is saved, Ishmael is reunited, and the trio drives off into a very filthy, very fond sunset.

Also discussed: the Big Lebowski costume DNA, Dodgeball-adjacent sports coverage, soaking, Rumspringa, sheep-based bowling distractions, the urinal scene Cris refuses to shut up about, and the all-important question of why Randy Quaid’s nipples are getting so much screen time. The verdict is a full-strength recommend, with the dads happy to put Kingpin right at the top of the Farrelly brothers’ early run.

SPEAKER_04

Bowling week. Yeah. Bowling week. It's an exciting one. Yeah. I'm a bit nervous. But anyway, we stumbled across this because Dan, you mentioned Kingpin in the top five segment last week.

SPEAKER_03

And we all kind of agreed.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I had no, it has been a while, but I do remember seeing this quite a few times back in the day. I've never seen that. You've never seen this one. This is an absolute classic 90s comedy for me. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Is this one that was immediately after Dom and Donna?

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Bobby and Peter Fallory and Farry Brothers. The bros. So road trip as well as a uh bowling vibe. Yeah. You got Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Bill Murray, of course.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe not best ever rovers that almost count as their own separate characters. I was gonna say you've got his hair.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, because it's incredible. They're just cutting to like the end, near the end, when he look when Roy Munson looks at what's her name? Vanessa Angel.

SPEAKER_00

He says, How's I look? And it's just got these shitty. Really sharp, Roy, really sharp.

SPEAKER_03

But there's he's got just a line about those those comovers. Woody Harrison said like he he'd done like the the combo and he thought, oh, this is gonna look really good. And then he looked and saw Phil Moes, right? He just realized he'd been out comed. Like it just It doesn't start off with a com over, though, does it?

SPEAKER_04

He's got a he's got a full head of hair.

SPEAKER_02

He has just a little through line from this is that the costume designer M Mary Zoffries, she also did the costuming for the big Lebowski, and I think it does share a little bit of it of its aesthetic in its sort of imagining of this stuff being sort of simultaneously really glamorous and populated by the biggest dorks you've ever seen.

SPEAKER_04

I was also getting massive dodgeball vibes from this film as well. Because they have like the ESPN coverage at the end and like new shitty sport and you know, weird people in there. Anyway, yeah, Roy Munson, as we see him at the start of the film, is a talented bowling guy.

SPEAKER_02

We first meet him in 1969 outside. His dad is working at Munson's service centre, and he's got a little makeshift bowling alley at the sky. And he's sort of talking about it. It's supposed to be his moral through line, isn't he? His dad's like this big square jawed sort of hero of a man, and he's sort of telling him you know, bowling can be the thing that guides you through your life.

SPEAKER_04

You're gonna make people so happy with your bowl next skills.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Iowa.

SPEAKER_03

That's where he's gonna be.

SPEAKER_02

One day when people say the name Munson, they're gonna think of a winner. Doesn't turn out to be the case, does it? Yeah. Um so anyway, we go to ten years later, 1979, disco inferno booming through. And it's the state championships or it's the big championships, isn't it?

SPEAKER_03

It's the uh the Odor Eaters Championship. Odor Eaters Championship. It's one of the biggest ones in he's up against Ernie McCracken the first time. We meet Ernie and we get this.

SPEAKER_02

But he's a real hero. He's a local hero. He comes in, he takes the pizza from somebody, does the splits, he's got his gold ball, he's like the world's at his feet.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, everybody knows who he is, and he knows who he is.

SPEAKER_02

He's a woman. Women want him, men want to be him, it's all that.

SPEAKER_01

When he leaves, they've got the sign outside of Potato Iowa, whatever it's called, uh the Oxalot. Yes, Oxalod. They got the home of Ray Munson, state champion. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So he's a real hero, so and he'll beat Ernie. There's a bit, is this the bit where Ernie's doing his own commentary over his shoulder? That's right. Yeah, that's the bit I'm trying.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's how you you find out. He's going, and can he beat? You know, the and you realise that this is this is Ernie McCracken just trying to put him off. He's saying, Oh, do I say that out loud? Because he goes, Do you mind sort of well? I didn't talk when you were about the bowl. Listen, quite dripping. Sorry, was I saying that out loud? He's going, Yeah, yeah. Anyway, he bowls the strike and he wins. Yes. I think he wins, is it a grand and a half? The the Odin Eaters Championship.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's about a grand and a half, the championship ring.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, this ring that he gets to wear the rest of the movie. But he also And Phil is gutted. Phil McCracken. Yeah. He gets up and leaves straight away, doesn't he? Yeah, he's not a good, he's not a good loser. But he propositions, he basically meets up with Roy and says Well afterwards Roy goes to drive off and finds that his car's fucked.

SPEAKER_02

He gets halfway down the road, and the garage attendant tells him, Well, somebody's put sugar in your tank. He's trying to worry, wonder who that is, and Ern Big Earn turns up, passively, passive aggressively mistakes him for the attendant there and bangs the door into his fin. Um just beeps the horn while they're having gone for ages.

SPEAKER_04

He's just fucking rude to everyone. Yeah. Because he's a real bastard to the lady in the the waitress in the diner.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Watch that perfect before you come back.

SPEAKER_02

And then when Roy's trying to eat, he tells her, he's like, Oh, that's disgusting. Can you go and put a shit outside? And then just at the end, the the little ad lib of hi, he says to one of the extras, and she looks at him and goes not you.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah, we get a good idea of who uh he is.

SPEAKER_04

He says to Roy, he says, There's no way you know bowlers can make it just winning the odd tournament for a grand and a half. You need to do some stuff in between the tour to make ends meet. And he's like, Oh, what do you mean? He's like, Well, you know, you just gotta hustle a bit, you know, do this, that and the other.

SPEAKER_02

So they pose as travelling dictionary says at a bowling alley, don't they?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, and they're not wise to the hustle this lot. It's it's well, they sort of they are actually because they're doing their own hustle because he pretends the guy's pretends to be a priest. Yeah, he's got tattoos. And he said, Oh, that's my one vice, and then it's like, oh, well, maybe two vices, and then they're like, woman comes up bringing him a drink, he pats her on the ass as she walks off. So so they hustle them, but they don't these guys don't take it too well.

SPEAKER_02

They're well they it's a it they leave it as a seven-ten split, don't they? And Ern is so unsubtle, he's like, Oh, I can't believe you've done it. Let's double up the money right now and see if he can do that.

SPEAKER_03

Which which for everybody who knows 7-10 split is the the pin on the right pin in the the left of the the triangle. A near impossible shot. A near impossible shot, which he makes, but then Ernie leaves him stranded. He goes, Oh, we better go out and face the music, and he opens his car. Sometimes it's time for a bowler to face the music. Exactly. And drives off. And they put his hand in the in the kind of I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

It does say keep hands away.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, but you get bumped by a ball coming out, I think that's all you would happen. Anyway, he loses his hand.

SPEAKER_02

We cut to the wood chipper, don't we? Yeah. 17 years later. Yeah. And he's a washed up alcoholic now with a hook for a hand revealed when he tries to turn his alarm clock off. Paying his rent in the worst possible way.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. What did you think of this lady that is the landlady? She was.

SPEAKER_04

Is it the lady who gets the ones that get tanned, does all the tanning and you see her tits and Mary's. Yeah, it's Lynn Shea.

SPEAKER_03

I think so, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Right, yeah. So she's got like the yellowest teeth, and he's got to perform oral on her to pay his.

SPEAKER_04

Well, first of all, he seems like he's like he's okay with her, and then he does he fakes a a robbery where she's getting held up. And and then later on you see the two of them in his apartment, and she comes in and realizes she's been completely done over. Yeah. And she says, Right, you're gonna pay me, you're gonna make this good, and he has to fuck her. And he's the cuts to him just like throwing up in the toilet.

SPEAKER_02

What is it? What is it about good sex that makes me want to crap? You really jarred something loose there, tiger. He's puking into the bowl. Yeah, life is is really bad. He's obviously is this alcoholic. What is he selling? Oh, he's selling like bowling just stuff, any sort of paraphernalia that he can get into.

SPEAKER_04

He goes to the bowling alley, he's selling like novelty condoms, lane polish, like anything, like anything. The guy's like, I don't want any of that shit. And we don't even have a fucking condom machine. We took it away, and he's like, Oh man. And then he just while he's chatting, he hears a strike. Yeah. And he turns around and it's this Amish guy. Yeah. Boy. Looks to have a bit about him. And Ishmael, he goes to speak to him and says, Oh, yeah, you really got something. And he goes, Oh, you saw that? He goes, No, I didn't see it. I heard it. I heard it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Like, wow, this guy's fucking good. And he says, Take a look at this. And it's I think it's the first time that we get the gag of he shows his he's got a rubber hand with the ring on it. And every time he wants to show someone the ring, they look at the hand, and every time somebody he wants to show them the hand, they look at the ring. It already counts, it just bends his neck is completely. Yeah. So he sort of tries to tell him about it, but Ishmael's having none of it. He's a good hardworking Amish man, he's going back to the He shouldn't even be there.

SPEAKER_04

He's sneaking out to go and have a few frames.

SPEAKER_02

So undeterred, Roy will travel to the Amish community and his brother Hezekiah, I think.

SPEAKER_01

He infiltrates. Yes.

SPEAKER_04

He stays there for a good while, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, they tried to do the barn thing and they they all nearly died because of him.

SPEAKER_03

Well he's trying to persuade him to leave his community temporarily and enter this lucrative bowling tournament, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_04

He's actually seen the advert while he was puking. So there's a million dollar winner takes all tournament in Reno. Yeah. And he can't bowl because his bowling hand is gone, but maybe this guy can.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So we've got the trappings of a sort of underdog sports movie going on here with the Amish guy playing the rising young pretender taken under the wing of the grizzled veteran.

SPEAKER_03

The Ishmael's family farm is also under financial strain.

SPEAKER_04

They need 500 grand.

SPEAKER_03

They do need the exact amount of Ismail.

SPEAKER_02

The horses' shoes also need changing.

SPEAKER_04

He cuts off their entire thing.

SPEAKER_02

The hooves. Yeah, the hooves off. Brilliant. So yeah, I mean circumstances conspire for this to be the right move for them to go.

SPEAKER_04

Get the Amish folk, don't they get do like a walkabout to get it sort of out of their system before they settle down into full-on armishes? Yeah, some of them do, yeah. Depending on it. Do you know what it's called when they when they uh when they fuck but they don't Yes, soaking.

SPEAKER_02

Soaking, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

What?

SPEAKER_02

Look it up. You're not allowed to have sex, I think, is a more what you can do is someone else jumps up and down on the bed. Yeah, if they move you, if you don't actually move, you're not having the sex. It's called soaking. It sounds like a real trial layer.

SPEAKER_04

It it sounds like a real kind of like cheap because you that's just safe, right? It sounds fucking horny. Yeah. So you get another person. You need a basically you're in, yeah, but then someone else is doing it. The movement, the jumping around. Jumping on the bed. Yeah, the poor.

SPEAKER_03

I'm assuming there's a curtain. No. No, I don't think so. So the third person is just bouncing on the bed looking at you.

SPEAKER_02

If you require a third person to bounce the bed, I would say your loophole is not as watertight as you think it is.

SPEAKER_04

I like the way Ishmael's put down for people is that they've got narrow hips and would probably only be able to have like five or six kids.

SPEAKER_02

He's Vanessa later, she's absolutely stunning. Yeah. Um Claudia is a Claudia is uh Vanessa Angel. Yeah. And she's just laughs.

SPEAKER_04

She's got your hips like that, she's only gonna be able to have six kids.

SPEAKER_02

But it's not long before they're out on the road, and it's a kind of it's a fish out of water story as well for Ishmael, who's kind of finding himself and getting a bit of freedom and that sort of thing. Also learning that you don't shit in the urinal. Oh, who invented that? I don't really get it.

SPEAKER_01

We've had no B day before. Oh no. So, you know. Yeah, I've seen I've seen that someone done that before. Or shit in the urine. Yeah, I've seen that done before. And honestly, that's the best thing I've ever seen in my life.

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Well, they they still get back on the hustle, basically. Yeah, they need to work their way round to Reno. And and slowly over time.

SPEAKER_02

Well, they start they they start doing their own version of the hustle, don't they? After he learns that actually Ishmael is not quite the prodigy that they thought he was, because they do everything twice as hard as everybody else. So he bowls 15 frames and his average is not that great. So there's a bit of learning to go on, and then there's some hustling which they're not very good at. They try to do the dictionary blag again, and it's Yeah. The guy's like, this is bullshit, but if you want a real game, go to this guy's house.

SPEAKER_04

And that's where they get Vanessa Vanessa Angel Claudia. This is very yeah, this is Stanley, who's definitely seems to be wearing eyeliner to me. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's like, he's from a completely different movie. He's from like a an 80s action movie. He's like a Miami Vice type guy, yeah. Yeah. It's like David Hasselhoff.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's got his own private bowling lane and they have a high-stakes game where Claudia is trying to distract She's wearing a micro dress. Yeah, and getting beers out of the fridge and getting hard nipples, and then Ishmael decides to go and get beers himself, and we have to watch Randy Quaid's nipples for the rest of the scene.

SPEAKER_04

They've gone into that hustle with one note wrapped around monopoly blanks. Yes. When he Ishmael needs to bowl three strikes to win, which he does, but Roy fucks it up and like as he's flummoxing around in his pocket, reveals that he was gambling with money he didn't have. So they get well, just before that, the Stanley guy's gone and beaten up Gloria. Yeah, yeah. So she's disgruntled about all that. So they all do a runner, basically. So now the the duo has become a trio, yeah, and they're on the run.

SPEAKER_01

And now they actually the hustle is working because she distracts their the opponents.

SPEAKER_04

She's been a professional hustler.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she distracts the opponents, they make the money, get the guy.

SPEAKER_02

She dresses up all sexy to distract him, apart from the farmers, where they have to bring in a load of sheep.

SPEAKER_03

Is it is it turned their eye. Is it is this point where she's go, Oh, you got really got munsoned or something. We've already had that, we have it twice, don't we?

SPEAKER_02

We know that we learn that his name is synonymous with failure. Yeah. You've been I've been munsoned out here in the middle of nowhere, which I've said. Yeah, we say the same with flambard, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

He's been flambarded, yeah. But they do uh eventually make it out to Reno.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there's a bit of like striving for ish his affections, it's it's ditches him. Yeah. And they have a fight. Does a stint in the strip club? He does. Yeah. They have a fight and it's like mummy and daddy fighting, and he doesn't like it, and he runs off. Yeah. And so they have to spend a bit of time getting to know each other. Roy will go back to his hometown to for a bit of a pet talk and sort of There's it's actually one of the more genuine bits in the movie where he doesn't he's like, what is it that he says?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'm just going through this town, this is where I used to live. And she says, You're looking sharp, boy, real sharp. And he's actually he brushes over his comb. Yeah, that's what his shit's kind of like his comb is all like flopping down on his neck. And she kind of licks her fingers and sort of sort of puts it flattened, flattens down on his his boarding head.

SPEAKER_02

It's the bit where he said she says, Oh, do you blame Big A? And he's like, Yeah, I do. And then he's like, Well, I used to, and then I don't know. Then he's sort of starting to take responsibility for his own fuck-ups, basically, his own life. And sort of that insight will then lead them both back to Ish that they rescued from the strip club. And after Reno, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Which is where they're going to meet all these years, big Ernie McCracken, who is he's such a help to the children of the world, and you see these adverts of Ernie McCracken turn up. He's helping young, underprivileged orphans who have the hottest mums in the world. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's actually that video that inspires Roy to get back into it because there's a kerfuffle, isn't there? The guys turn up, Stanley's guys turn up, ends up getting his hand hurt. Well, he spun the wall. He punches the wall, he can't bowl. Oh my god, it's all over, how terrible. Then he sees the advert on TV. Well, and he says, and he goes, At one time, I I didn't blame myself.

SPEAKER_03

Can you believe that?

SPEAKER_02

When he says, he says, um when he sees him for the first time, he's like, There hasn't been a day in 17 years, I haven't thought about this moment. He's like, That's great, and then we go straight on to the next.

SPEAKER_01

And also the subplot is that only knows Claudia.

SPEAKER_02

Not just knows, he knows her very well. They spent lots of time together very intimately.

SPEAKER_03

It's just a another kind of punch into Munson's gut. Yeah. And this one upsman's he's got on it.

SPEAKER_02

So we get the the tournament, it's like the karate kids.

SPEAKER_04

You could do it. Yeah. It's like, maybe I could, yeah. He's a thousand to one shot. He's gonna give it a go with his plastic hand.

SPEAKER_02

When he registers, it's like, oh, it's Roy Munson, and they start laughing because they're like, it's obviously a joke to them, or Roy Munson's like, no, it is actually Roy Munson, and he shows him the hand. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Shows him the ring. Yeah. They only see the rubber hand. Yeah. The ring. The ring.

SPEAKER_02

So the tournament starts, and wouldn't you know it, Roy is playing out of his skin. First time he bowls, like you see the hand detached that.

SPEAKER_04

Pretty sure would be a foul. Yeah. But yeah, it's you know, there's that classic one where then you see the scoreboard getting whittled down, and you know, it's the classic comeback narrative. It is all the comments.

SPEAKER_03

You know that who's gonna fight in the final, you know who's gonna play in the final, and it's a real masterpiece of tension. It's a million dollar prize, and you you know that the last three balls were actually for real. He did the real Bill Mo through three strokes in a row for real. It gets to it gets to the scene where can't scare through his hair.

SPEAKER_02

I know his hair is at this point bigger, and the pressure's he just gets more and more.

SPEAKER_04

At one point, it's probably like two foot of like just combo that's not attached like doing his stuff, and it's just mad coma just sticking out about two foot in a fucking right angle from his head. It's incredible.

SPEAKER_02

He had libbed virtually every line of hit in the in the movie, like he didn't stick to the script at all. So he uses the Bill Murray like charm and that vanity for such evil work here. It's like it's brilliant.

SPEAKER_03

Uh for me, it's one of his his best performances. It really is. Yeah, I would love to be able to do it.

SPEAKER_04

It's amazing. Yeah, you keep thrusting into the yeah, it's got the rose in the room.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you've got the rolls. I I thought I can't remember, I thought it was something else initially, but like a medal or something, but it is a roll. Yeah, it's a rose, and he's like, Wild every time.

SPEAKER_04

And I kept thinking of the who do you think you are, I am guy every time.

SPEAKER_03

We have the final just do yourself a favour and have a quick. I should I should get a poster of that actually, because it is absolutely awesome. And he's he's got a name, what's the name of his bowling ball? It's like old thunder or something like that. He keeps talking to talking to it in now more than ever.

SPEAKER_02

But he does actually win.

SPEAKER_04

Well, so they build the tension up. So they we see first we see Roy like leave a couple, and then there's one end where Ern Mrs. Lee's three down, yeah, and then it gets to and it's like if if Must strike, you know, and he will need to get three strikes.

SPEAKER_03

He needs to get three strikes in a row, which he does, and he has a few. And so yeah, so Roy does it, and then I watched kind of a little bit on on YouTube about this scene, and like, and there's all the crowd are there and everything, and obviously they have to, you know, act and everything that he's doing this, but when he said you're actually doing it for real, when he's doing you know, he needs three strikes, and he's doing he said it it just made everything a little more believable. So there he is, sort of, you know, does the first strike one, you know, it's one just showing the one for and then that's two, there's two, and a little dance all between, and then he's just so dramatic, isn't he? And he he's he lies on this law and he's like a little over there. He's so he gets the third strike, and he's just yeah, it it's disgusting celebration.

SPEAKER_02

But everything's been telling you that in this movie that Roy would win this because you think that's the kind of comeback story thing, but he doesn't.

SPEAKER_03

But the worst man in the world wins it is Arch and he's he's like, I've won a million, I'm bigger than the law, I'm bigger than it's enough, and the only way you can do it, it doesn't matter I can do whatever I want. The bit earlier where that where the woman comes out and he just grabs her tit. Yeah, oh that's it. She's he calls her back, didn't he? She's one on and he's going, Oh, what's this? You know, and then the the security camera away. And he realizes she's got massive booms, so he sort of brings her back and they go, Oh, he's an inspiration for Roy. Look how Roy might big Annie McCracken's doing it.

SPEAKER_02

I mean 1103. Yeah, yeah. He keeps telling everyone it's good number.

SPEAKER_04

Anyway, so it cuts to about six hours later, and Roy's still just sat in his chair, just completely crestfallen, and then eventually screams, no.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Because we didn't say Claudia's also done a runner with the money they had hustled. Yes. 41 grand or 42 grand or something like that.

SPEAKER_02

There's even a bit halfway. She's done it where Kern has messaged on the thing going, I'm Claudia's back and I love you. And he turns around to look and he's coming here laughing.

SPEAKER_04

But Claudia had done that because there's those guys were gonna go after them, and so she's basically falls on her sword to say, Alright, I'll come with you. So it cuts goes back to his fucking shitty hovel of a fucking bed sit. But he's sort of got his shit together. He's just pouring booze, got like you just see his cupboards and every single one's full of Jim Bean. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's just pouring it all down. He's sort of finally taking the responsibility for his life and Cynthia knocks on the on the door and says, Oh, you know, how you doing? And he's like, Oh, fucking, you're back. Yeah. She's like, Yeah, I'm back. I've got the eighty four grand. He's like, What do you mean? So I doubled it. Yeah. We bet on you to lose. And it's he's like, he just shows her this check for half half a million. She's like, what's this? It's like, oh, because of the rubber hands. I got sponsored. Trojan.

SPEAKER_02

Trojan conducts. Because he became the rubber man.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I've got to do, you know, a few like guest spots and a few things and then better being half a mil. Yeah. And then they go to see Ish.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Who needs a said amount of money to keep his family farm open.

SPEAKER_04

Ish is a bit worried because they're already at the dinner table.

SPEAKER_02

Well, because he's gone on his own journey. He's been drinking and smoking and weaponizing and all that stuff. And then he's gone back, obviously, to the Amish community. And when he sees them there, he's like, oh fuck. I'm gonna be landed right here. And his dad's all stern. Yeah. They've told us everything that you did, and then he says, Oh, he said about the gambling, the womanizing, the drinking, he's looking really worrying, and then But you got him to stop. But you got him to stop. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. This lovely man and the whore. And the whore, they they came and they gave us the money, so and they told us everything you did, and then And then even as they're going off at the end, it's goodbye, Roy.

SPEAKER_02

Goodbye, whore.

SPEAKER_04

He smells like that. Put his hand on his girl. Yeah. So great big mega happy ending.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. After all. It's a blues traveller singing a kind of scar tune, one of two, I'm afraid, dreadful scar tracks. They also kiss Roy and Claudia. They do kiss.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, they're there's there's romance there. A bit of romance.

SPEAKER_03

I'd love to have seen a Ernie McCrack in follow-up to this because I as I think it's one of Bill Murray's best characters. He made the film every scene that he was in. It just made me laugh out loud. But I mean the Farrelly brothers just have comedy, don't they? They they know what is funny and they do funny really well. And this I think this might be their best, actually.

SPEAKER_02

I don't there's something about Mary. I haven't seen the stuck on you one, is it the That's okay as well.

SPEAKER_04

Tony Murray's really good. Dumb and dumb isn't it?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, dumb and dumb is tough and tough to beat. This is great.

SPEAKER_04

I think Bill Murray is the by far the best thing in this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Well Eddie Harrison's good though as well. He's got brilliant comic time, he plays it very, very straight. And he's like that sometimes the audience proxy because he does a double take at the just sheer insanity that's happening around him.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Did you enjoy it, Chris? Yeah, that was this was good. Yeah. I'm not gonna lie, this was good. I uh the best thing I've ever seen in cinema ever is that guy taking a shit in the orhana.

SPEAKER_04

Because they show you him reading the paper. Yeah, yeah. And then there's people just taking a piss next to him like you would normally do. Pans out afterwards, and you're like, oh fuck.

SPEAKER_01

And then there is the scene when he's upset and he knocks on the window. What are you doing? They're knocking on the door, what are you doing? Taking a shit in the sink. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

But there's the other one when they run away with Cindy, she drives. Yeah. And then they just look, she you know, they've just like been like five foot over, you know, in the air where they've just gone over a ramp or whatever, and they and they just look around at you.

SPEAKER_05

Petrified.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. More than a few good moments. If you haven't seen this, I'd say go.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no, this is good. This is good. Yeah, this is.

SPEAKER_02

This is the second best bowling movie I watched this week.

SPEAKER_04

I was gonna leave it on. Is this the best bowling film we've seen this week? Riggs has set his stall out, yeah. Wow.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we're gonna have to tune in for the main episode for this one.

SPEAKER_04

Because we're going from this into Lebowski later on this week. So this is a strong, strong recommend. Really strong recommend. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Brilliant. It's a king of recommends.
