Sevens & Mickey 17
This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan, Reegs and Cris keep Seven Week going with Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho's 2025 sci-fi black comedy starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an expendable who is sent on deadly jobs, dies, and is printed back out with his memories intact. Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo complete the cast.
The episode opens with a few terms of endearment, a shout-out to the Discord crowd after last week's bowling theme, and a full report on a walking football win over St Clement's, who had an excellent goalkeeper, a referee who got it wrong twice, and a 4-1 scoreline in the end. After a catch-up on what everyone has been watching, including Tenzing, Day of the Jackal, MobLand and Shantaram, the dads run through the week's sevens, from Final Fantasy VII and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, with detours into Seven Psychopaths, Scott Pilgrim and 127 Hours along the way.
Then it is on to the film. The dads talk through the footballer-based names, the failed macaron business, the loan shark with a chainsaw, the colony expedition led by Mark Ruffalo's Trump-style politician, and the expendable job that has Mickey killed over and over again and 3D-printed back out while the scientists laugh. They compare it to Moon, grumble about the calorie-controlled slop, and follow the plot into the second half, where Mickey 17 survives the crevasse, Mickey 18 arrives alpha and aggressive, and the Creepers turn out to be the friendly ones.
The panel is sharply split. Dan thought it was a nice surprise, light-hearted sci-fi with great laughs, a great Pattinson and a deliciously selfish Timo. Reegs found it wildly uneven and very bloated, but laughed and liked Pattinson. Sidey did not hate it but had to pause it for the school run and was dismayed by how much was left. Cris called it a complete waste of time and spent the second half ordering bagels and avocado for the cafe on his phone.
The verdict is a split decision, with a strong 17 out of 17 from Dan and a shrug from almost everyone else.

You call me babes. I've I I call babes babes. Hun. Hun love. Love, no. No, I never said love.
SPEAKER_00Never call anyone on that.
SPEAKER_03What have you got any other go-tos? Little terms of affection. Well, for the missus or just people in general.
SPEAKER_01Let's go for friends, but let's say we're common friends.
SPEAKER_04We've got a hunter or hun, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00The missus is called doofus. And then Chief, we might like go-to for like people. Never say love or deer or anything like that. Yeah. So they seem a bit dated to me. Yeah. Someone that we do have love for, though, is Darren Lethalley. Yes. Lee to Nada. And Mel as well. Well, everyone, really, but we've had some comms from these wonderful people on Discord. Mel was thrilled that I mentioned Bodyline. Oh, she posted an amazing story about She went as Don Bradman to a fancy dress thing, yeah. Uh as a kid. With a black eye and a sling from that was a book week. Book week's bookweek and your daughter went as Sherlock Holmes. Yeah. Um so Mel had nominated Greece 2 because that has a dance number called Let's Bowl. Okay. And Rigs, you're a huge fan of the Greece universe. And across the universe, the Beatles musical alley. I think I've heard about that. I've seen. Hang on, wait. They all go bowling and sing I've just seen a face and a special mention to this TV show, Ed, which was set in a bowling alley.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's a few films that are or a few scenes that are set in bowling alleys, not necessarily like uh I nominated the nice guys, the nice guys chatting. They don't actually play, but they just sit there.
SPEAKER_00So we're gonna talk about sevens as our top five. Darren's coming right out of the gate. Yeah, some probably with some of the ones that we've got. Seven Samurai, which is basically the magnificent seven, seven psychopaths 24-7. That's a great shout. That's a Shea Meadows. Don't know if it's this debut, but it's definitely early. Bob Hoskins one. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Yeah. Police Academy Seven, I think it's Mission to Moscow. It's the best one. Well, the seven. That's the seventh one. Um is a seventh. Is that your favourite?
SPEAKER_03There are. I remember the one I remember the most. What happens in the one to Moscow? Is that do they go on the plane and they look at the one with big tits? Yeah. They look at her tits. Yeah. Well, there's more than just that, but that's that's that's the part that I remember.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He also mentions that there are now seven Jurassic Park movies. Yeah. The last one is the one with Mahershala Ali and Scarlett Johansson. Yeah. Is that old deal? Oh, yeah, it's been out for a while. It's crap. Yeah, yeah. All right. I'm not sure. Uh guess what? There's more like genetically, you know This one we crossed with the toaster.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Is that Rebirth? Yes. Something like that, yeah. And he also Darren mentions about an Irish ad for bottled water and juices, which has bowling where the guy chucks the ball in like several lanes over. So I think people really want to know about our I know Riggs does, walking football exploits of the weekend. Because we're playing a team we'd never played before. St. Clement's, yeah. St. Clermont.
SPEAKER_02The new boys on the block, the unknown elements. Yeah. We were a bit rusty, I have to say. And that they were resilient. You know, they they knew how to play. They had a good goalkeeper. They had a good they had a really good goalkeeper. But they defended quite deeply and made it difficult to I mean we had lots of balls.
SPEAKER_00The first ten minutes played exclusively in their final third, and then we just kind of overcommitted and we got caught out in this score. They had one attack. I think I should have blocked it, really. I could have I maybe could have blocked it, but it was yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well then the pressure was on. Did you have the mentality to come back?
SPEAKER_00I also told our managers to shut up because it was getting on my fucking nerves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, tempers were getting frayed descent.
SPEAKER_00Wow. I called somebody a prick. They just might they just shout at you like constantly. I'm like, it's not that fucking bad. Like I think I waited till we're one all. It gets passionate and they're like this. I'm like, we're fucking still waiting, I just let us play. And it was then I could hear him going, then watch the same game we moved. So yeah, we did turn it round though. I think we were two one at half time.
SPEAKER_02We're two no, we were one-one at half time.
unknownWait.
SPEAKER_02Because the penalty was two one. Right. And then yeah, so it was one-one at half time. Oh maybe I got not seven. I got just three. Oh, all three, you mean? All three.
SPEAKER_00Lionel Lionel clinched it with a sort of run. But so first half. Run in walking football. Yeah, we got one in but so Lionel left. The ref owed us, right? Because the first half ad got clipped. I think the guy played it on the deck. Like, you know, you can't, you're not, you can't tackle on the floor.
SPEAKER_02So the guy's dad played on and scored.
SPEAKER_00Dad took a touch, bang, goal. The guy's like blow. To be fair, he did blow before, but he should have just waited a second to see what happened. So the ref was like really at halftime, it's like really sorry, like got that one wrong, blah blah blah. I'm like, don't worry about it, it's fine. He fucking did it again in the second half. Yeah, so it cost us two goals, and the the goalkeeper made like at least a dozen like decent saves.
SPEAKER_02Really good saves. Like he was he was a a very, very good keeper, but we did manage to break him down. They did go into the area. It wasn't a run, it wasn't like the pen for going to penalty. You like to do it, don't you? Yeah, I I managed to score a pen, but it's you're very close, but as I say, the key was quite good, and I thought you still have to score then. Yeah, it doesn't matter, they all can't they do. And delighted to get the three points.
SPEAKER_00Play five, one five, Portuguese next week. Okay. Big game, huge stat. It's a massive game. So we'll see how we're gonna do that. We'll let you know how it goes. I watched some things. Do you remember what?
SPEAKER_04Nope.
SPEAKER_00I don't remember. There was a James Bond film. Tomorrow, the one with Jonathan Price is the bad guy, the newspaper guy. Like Jeff Bezos, sort of.
SPEAKER_02Not Diamonds Off Forever, which is the seventh James Bond film. You're going way too early on the top five. You know, okay, I'm just trying to get in there.
SPEAKER_03I think that's alright, getting in there.
SPEAKER_02Um I watched Tenzing. Oh right, yeah, yeah. The new one. It's on Apple, is it? On Apple, yeah, with Wilm Defoe and that looked quite good. Some other actors. And he it was he played John Hunt, the expedition leader. And I enjoyed it. We we sat down as a family. It's a PG. Tips. But PG tips, so it's a nice one for family viewing. But I mean, I don't know lots about that expedition and how close it was to the actual truth of it. But afterwards we were like, did that really happen? And actually, some of what they showed on the film in at one point Edmund Hillary goes down a crevasse and Tenzing kind of you know puts the ice axe in and takes the weight and and holds him back from drop falling to his death. And he goes, Yeah, that that did happen, but that's what you do in in high, you know, climbing when you're in pairs, you look after each other, and at different times he'd looked after him, you know, and putting your life in someone else's hands. Yeah, and you know, you look at the the I was thinking just like surely it'd freeze, like you can see his neck in the you know, between his hat and his thing, you think it'd just be absolutely freezing, his face would be and then you see photographs of them afterwards as I say I went into the and you think, no, they actually did the clothes were just like you were wrapped up on a cold winter's day now. Yeah, but it was the best they had at the time to go up to.
SPEAKER_03I remember in I went in the Raf and I went to Finland and it was like minus thirteen or something. We were out in the middle of nowhere, and we had all the fucking gear on, snowshoes and shit, tramping through this thing and like making real hard fucking work of it, and this woman just comes past, obviously a local, like walking her dog, like just sort of yeah, it's basically just like throwing a ball along and the dog's running, and we're like, you know, we're we're fucking trekking across the North Pole and she's out for a stroll with the dog.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean people do get used to it, but when it gets that cold and the wind chill sort of picks up and everything. But it was quite interesting because Tenzing didn't realise how just from nothing he came and how he, you know, imagine the bit of prejudice there and he's had to earn his way and and kind of get through to being one of the the people that went into the final climb, the summer team, because it was a British expedition, and it's actually a Kiwi and a guy from Tibet or you know, Nepal, India, they're all kind of claiming him after he's actually climbed that made the the first ascent, you know.
SPEAKER_03But although, isn't it? They'd done it before though, hadn't they?
SPEAKER_02I mean, the lower Well Mallory was meant to have gone and maybe died on the way back. They'd never find his body or the camera that might have proved that he did it. He did it. So but they were the first to actually come back down, yeah, you know, white first white people. So well, I think anyone, I think the it was only white people that ever were crazy enough to go and watch them. Do you know what I mean? The rest of them were going, no, and it's a holy mountain, and they you know they're not gonna go and anger the mountain and just cry and climb it for climbing stuff. Just for lows, they've got you know hard work to be done. It's the the Swiss, the French, the British, they're all crazy enough to do it. But we watched that and it was decent. And it may be a a future nov. We'll see.
SPEAKER_04Question? I've watched quite a few things actually, quite a few, I'm saying. I've watched I finished The Day of the Jackal is done. Oh uh there was too many episodes. It could have been done to at least two episodes sooner. It's quite good. It it still ends with like the Miss Leaves Him and blah blah blah. So it is set up obviously for the second season, which I'm not gonna bother, especially if it's another ten episodes. Surprise! Or ten or eleven episodes when they could have done it in eight, easy. I watched the first episode of Mobland, and I was gonna watch the second one.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna have a season two or something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay, but then I realized because I really like the first one, and I thought I'll give it a go, but then I realized that they're not all out. Oh, you could drip feed.
SPEAKER_03And it's just I think there's only four episodes out, but have they introduced anybody's new cousin or a special uncle or not yet. You're you know, you're complaining.
SPEAKER_04I'm a bit confused because the last one was when it finished, the like Of course you're confused, you've never watched a second season before. Well, yeah, I know, but um it's almost like there's some things that it's like ah, previously on Mobland, and then it's like, well, they were in prison and they you were taking over, but now they're all just the same, but they're just not talking to each other, and I'm like the father and son, and I'll be like, Well, like Patty Considine and the Piers Brosnan are not talking to each other, but they say I never knew Patty Consodine was in it, so that's that turns out actors. Oh, it's they're all really like Patty Considine is Piers Brosnan, it's Helen Mirren, it's Tom Hardy. There's some Irish guy who's been in a lot of stuff who's really I like him. I can't remember his name is Paul in the thing, but he's he's good and he's quite funny as well. Okay. And he he has a thing where he goes like, you know what? You know, this is called organized crime. He's got like a proper Irish accent. He's like, There's not much organized in the name. We're not really organized here, are we? And I what so I watched that, and uh when I realized there's only one episode, well, that there's only four, I was like, I'm not, I can't commit to this. And I watched the first two episodes of a series called Shantaram. Ah, I've read the book, which is with Charlie Hunnam and a lot of other, I'm gonna say, without insulting anyone, Asian people. Indian flambouts.
SPEAKER_02Loads of Indian but it's comes from it's based in in India.
SPEAKER_04In India, well, he's Australian, yeah. So at the beginning he's in prison in Australia.
SPEAKER_02Gregory Roberts, I think his name is. I've I've got his book in the the second one there, Shadow Mountain. Basically, it's a based on it, it's like a modern-day papillon. Yeah, and he was a bank robber in or a fellow anyway, arm robber in Australia. He manages to escape. The film is his name's Dale, and then he's called Lindsay. Yeah, so he's he's got aliases, but it's Gregory Roberts is the the name of the author, I'm sure. And he then lives in the kind of slums of Bombay and and rises through the ranks of the underworld there to become somebody to be respected, feared, and and kind of and then he puts his own. I want to see Kirby Sold, so it was I was I had high hopes because the book is brilliant. The book is absolutely it's it's like a telephone book thick, and it's it's brilliant because he's never written a book before. It's just his men like Papillon, you know, he's just kind of put his his story down on paper. And I think that who was there was a few of them like Johnny Depp, I think was one of the people going for the rights, and there was maybe Brad Pitt as well. There was a lot of them that were going for the rights of it. I got only a couple of episodes in as well, I must say, before it was on Apple TV, and it just didn't compare to the book, you know, when you've committed. So, but yeah, let me know.
SPEAKER_04I enjoyed I enjoyed the first two episodes I watched, and I enjoyed both of them because I didn't read the book, yeah, and I don't know anything about this guy. Uh the only thing I knew was that he it was on a based on a real person. And what I read was that the guy wrote it while he was in prison in Germany or something like that. Yeah. So I I watched that. That's that's all I can say. So, Simon?
SPEAKER_03Did a couple more episodes of Carrie. That's really good. Yeah, and yeah, carry a bag. And we're nearly finished mocking Jay now. So that's how many are we into that? Four, is it? Into the Hunger Games universe? Oh yes, okay. Okay, yeah. Nice. Alright, that's what I thought it's like a series. I quite watch some films. Yeah, my eldest is really like gone into a bit of a bit bad to watch with the kids. I think there's enough of my interests are represented, but it's all a bit like you've seen it all before, but done better, and but now they've got at least a bit of budget, and the actors are so good at least. You've got Philip Seymour Hoffman is in it, Mahershala Arlie. There's loads of really good actors. Julianne Moore, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00I remember I watched an episode of X-Files with my daughter. It was about child and murderers. Nice. It was the eugenics one where a woman has been cloning herself over and over again, but the kids start to get so the problem was they were getting psychotic, but they're now the younger ones are getting. So there's like we basically effectively twins who are as psychos, and Rana was super into that. Is there is new X-Files coming out? Is it?
SPEAKER_03I hope not. I think it's on Disney, maybe. Okay.
SPEAKER_00And Morfargo. Yeah. Good. And I really want to see You Can See Everything. Yeah. But it's not available.
SPEAKER_03I started watching some Nathan Felder stuff because I don't really know anything about him, so I've watched the rehearsal, I've watched the first few episodes of that. That's quite interesting.
SPEAKER_00That documentary sounds just bonkers.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Elizabeth Holmes, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I started watching Norm McDonald's. Oh, I saw that was advertised, yeah. Yeah. I just I don't know if he's that funny. Everyone likes to the best out.
SPEAKER_03Sometimes, sometimes he's got some good lines though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the stuff I really like is the news thing he did on SNL where it was all about OJ. Every every gag would be like about OJ being a murderer and being definitely guilty. And he does have one as him, but I d I think they put one too high, but it's all anyway.
SPEAKER_02Here's one that he he said, I had a vivid dream of the number seven, just a giant seven. And when I woke up, it was seven o'clock. And so I get up and decide to go to the track because I like to play the the horses, the ponies. I get a cab, the cab pulls up. Number seven. So I get to the track and ask what I owe, and it was seven dollars seventy-seven. And I go in through gate seven, it's the only booth open, is the seventh. I look at the board in the seventh race. There's a horse named Lucky Number Seven, and his odds are seventy-seven to one. And I go to my bank and there's seven hundred thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven dollars in there. I believe it he says, and I put it all on, he came seventh. So there's one from Norman. Very good.
SPEAKER_00Well, on that note, shall we just dive into our top five sevens? Yeah. Right, because I watched one of these this this week, 007 out of the gate. Yeah, yeah. Mr. James Bond, Commander Bond. Do you remember the name of the first Bond girl he m that Sean Connery meets in Doctor No? Pushing the colour. No, that's Gold Finger, that's not Marstand. They're playing back b Baccharak at the casino and she's winning loads, and then he beats her and it the camera pans around and it's a lot of vagina or something. No, Sylvia Trench. Alright, nice. Which always made me chuckle. I've been making an effort to re-watch the Piers Brosnan ones because they are so bad. But he would have been a good bond if they had had better films for him. I feel like he got he got done a bit dirty there, Piers, because he's a great actor, I think. And the the story just sort of rumbles on about who might be the next 0007. I hope it's gonna be Jack Loudoun or whatever his name is from Slows.
SPEAKER_02Oh Slow Horses, yeah. Yeah, it could it could make a good one. I mean I kind of hoped Henry Cavill, to be honest.
SPEAKER_04Too high profile for a boss.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they don't all they rarely, apart from Piers Brosnan, who was kind of everyone thought, oh he he would be a good one. They then they did go for him. It tends to be someone a bit out of left field um when they make their choice. So we shall see, but it'd be interesting to see what they do with it after having killed him in the last one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. The seventh voyage of Sinbad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The classic, it's Ray Harryhausen, Hofenhausen. He he did the mythical creatures he brought to to life, and it's it's kind of inspired by the the Persian sailor who r got a return to a dangerous island where the he gets the cyclopses, there's a giant two-headed bird, a dragon, skeletons, and it's all about the romance and sword play. Love a bit of swordplay, magic. And I loved these films when I was a kid. The princess is absolutely beautiful in this as well. You've got a genie, all the kind of things that make a seventh voyage even better than the sixth. And there was the the music was actually done by a guy called Bernard Herman, who was known well for Alfred Hitchcock kind of collabs.
SPEAKER_04Collabs. Yeah. Nice. Well, speaking of your youth and stuff that you used to like when you were a child, in 1937 there was an animation/slash family film r release called The Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I do remember it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Which I'm pretty sure you're maybe a teenager by then. I was a little bit older than a few. Sleepy, dopey, wanky, angry.
SPEAKER_00Well they're not. Spanky, wanky.
SPEAKER_04Spanky, wanky, hanky, panky.
SPEAKER_00Hand-drawn animation, really great. Yeah. Is anyone bothered with the Rachel Ziegler one? No.
SPEAKER_04Oh, really? She has I've seen that. There's not white and the seven dwarves, and it's basically what do they do with the apple in that one? Do you really want to know?
SPEAKER_03No. They jacked the apple. Is it like because it is a bit sort of gangbanky, isn't it? Because she's like in the forest with seven sort of horny old little men. Yeah. With big dicks. Yeah. And beards. So you can sort of imagine what would go on.
SPEAKER_04In porno, they didn't have all beards, but in the in the cartoons. In the actual film that I was referring to, the dwarves are well, most of them have beards, if I remember correctly.
SPEAKER_00Did sort of change it a bit, didn't they, for the new for the seven for Snow White in the the new like you know, live action version, didn't they? They took a machine gun out of her hand and put a walkie-talkie in it.
SPEAKER_03Can you still call it?
SPEAKER_00Well, that's the thing. Yeah, they weren't gonna have dwarves, they had to change it to be something else. Oh, I see. Yeah, there was a lot of backlash about the whole film. Well, she made then some political comments and sort of people tried to cancel her on that basis. There was also some footage of her at a premiere where she looked like she was definitely chemically enhanced, let's say. Yeah. Was that the one?
SPEAKER_02I also snow white. Yeah. Literally getting snow white. Wow.
SPEAKER_03Well, also I've got questions about the diamond mine because there was day in they talk a lot about how hard they toil, and yet they didn't produce a single they lived in poverty and they hadn't produced a single diamond. That mining operation should have been closed out.
SPEAKER_00That's the beers for you, though. That's just how it works. That's the diamond industry. That's just you know, blood diamonds and all that. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I have got the seventh seal, which I've never seen all the way through. I've now seen quite a lot of, and definitely seen it represented in lots of other movies.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's not the animal documentary. No. No, no.
SPEAKER_03No. Ingmar Bergman's chess playing with death. Oh, I've heard of this. Oh, I've never seen it.
SPEAKER_00It's the night and death. Yeah. And then uh Bill and Ted's bogus journey do a great take on it.
SPEAKER_04I I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I I've heard of it, but I've never heard of it. Death playing chess on a beach, basically. I mean that's yeah. And I've recently got into playing chess with my youngin'. Okay, nice. Oh, yeah. Okay. Have you got like a little trad chess board?
SPEAKER_04Have you got a lot of real live people in this garden and orders them around, yeah. Yeah. You have to kill it, kill that one. Yeah. No? Like that. Yeah, like that, exactly. Like that.
SPEAKER_02Break the seal. Where it is normally after a few pints when you break the seal, isn't it? I don't know if it's after the seventh, but then you're to the toilet all the time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, depending on how dehydrated you are, I guess. Yeah. If you make it to the seventh, digress. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Slightly? A couple of BBC shows. Blake Seven. Anyone remember that? No. I do remember it, but it in my notes, it also says that it has one of the bleakest finales ever, which I don't remember how it ends. Oh, I don't watch enough of it. We watched seven for the midweeker, and that was bleak after so I'd be interested to see if it is worse than that. And then I remember when I was a a small child and I was started watching Doctor Who, and the doctor that I grew up with was the seventh doctor. Who was that? Sylvester McCoy. Oh yeah. I think it might be completely terrible, but that's kind of the point with you know the doctors. They had no money, right? So it looks a bit flimsy. But I do remember being fucking terrified, like watching it. Yeah. It was all like pre-water show stuff, and the baddies was just like really cybermen. Cybermen, I think I was really terrified of. Yeah. And not a BBC one, but another TV series is The Boys. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Bad guys slash good guys, the you know, depending on how you look at it, the seven. The bad guys and the worst guys, maybe. Yeah. The seven, yeah. By the sort of what if superheroes were just complete arseholes.
SPEAKER_03What if Superman was a dick? Yeah. And the seven being based on the Justice League that was the main seven.
SPEAKER_00What, the boys? No, I haven't watched the last series. Alright. I read all the original texts. It's just like people getting squashed and stuff and board.
SPEAKER_03The homelander bit is quite interesting, the last episode.
SPEAKER_02It it does drop off for me the the last the last series. Something that was big at the time was Seven Years in Tibet, which was I'm out near befriending the Dalai Lama and our friend friend of the pod, Brad Pitt, who was in the midweek for seven that we did. Do you think Brad would come on to the pod?
SPEAKER_04I think he would have to buzz if we if we read, yeah, I think he'd love that. I don't know why we've never tried it.
SPEAKER_02I just thought we yeah, we we'd never really want him. But it's based on the memoir of Austrian mountaineer He Heinrich Harrier, and obviously this was around the time of the the Second World War, and he was going to the Himalayas to to climb a mountain. War broke out, the British put him in prison, he and another mountaineer, Peter Auschweiz, no, kind of sound like Nazis. Yeah, well, they weren't, I don't think, but they they escaped over into Tibet and began a friendship with the young Dalai Lama. And I remember from the film they were ice skating and he was very good, Heinrich Harrier, and he was showing off, whereas Peter's friend was rubbish and kept on falling over. It was that that kind of endeared him more to the Tibetans rather than the show off type of Heinrich Harrier, and he he just kind of learned more about you know being a lot more humble and and everything and began this profoundly life-changing friendship with with the Dalai Lama, who was the the 14th, which is you know cut by half twice seven, twice seven exactly. There you go.
SPEAKER_04Well, well, thank you. I have a franchise with the seventh, like you've had the 007, and the seventh film was in the in this 007 series. What was the seventh film?
SPEAKER_02Oh I don't know, I didn't actually quite Living Daylights, I think. Uh no, it was Diamonds Are Forever Diamonds R Forever.
SPEAKER_04It's the Fast and Furious franchise. The Fast and Furious Seven was just Furious Furious. It's Fall Furious Seven, so Paul Walker's last one. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03So I only picked that one because I thought it's got madden maddeningly inconsistent naming, the Fast and Furious franchise. Well, this one was called Furious Seven, so this was quite Furious Seven, so they dropped the Fast completely. Yeah. And then the next one was just called F8, I think, or something, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_04I don't know, but this one was also to help finish the film, Paul Walker's uh brothers Caleb and Cody step in a body. I hate the name Cody. I think Caleb is worse. They're both awful, aren't they? And you have to be American to be called Cody. I think that's why I hate Cody so much. It's like Tanner.
SPEAKER_00Is Cody a well Tanner's a profession at least. Yeah. Like someone who tanned something. Like you tan leather or something. Yeah. Whereas Cody is just like fucking you jerk off for a living or something. Cody prick.
SPEAKER_04Well anyway, they they did the they helped finish the remaking scenes and they put on CGI and whatever, so so they kind of look like him, and they help f finish the film and sadly he passed away while filming this. While jumping a car out of a building.
SPEAKER_03No, actually it was a car wreck. It was a car wreck before.
SPEAKER_00This mate doing a like a ton run or something in a portion crashed it.
SPEAKER_03Many such stories. So that yeah. Scott Pilgrim versus the world. Is it seven evil exes? Seven evil exes, yeah. Just it was Michael Searer as Scott Pilgrim, he was really good. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the chick. And Ellen Wong as Knives Chow, the love interest. So he had to fight off the seven evil exes if he could win her affections. And we had Lucas Lee was the skateboarder action hero played by Chris Evans. His his stunt team did the fighting for him. They've got Todd Ingrams, the vegan rock star played by Brandon Roos. He's got like Kryptonite via Meat or something. The vegan police take him down. That's right. They take him down. You've got Roxy Richter, she's by Furious. That's the first one, isn't it? He's like, what? Yeah, the girl. Who else do they have? We've got the Katanyagi twins, and then you've got Gideon, who's the like final boss. Document Schwartzman. Yeah. Yeah. I love that film. It's great. It's great, isn't it? Yeah. I think we did it for the pod, didn't we? We did do it for the pod, yeah. Creed. Oh. The seventh instalment of the Rocky franchise.
SPEAKER_00Real good one as well. Isn't it? Harry Potter. Seven is supposed to be a real magical number. They didn't say that in the film, but there were seven whore sorry in the text. Seven whores. There are seven whore crocs. There are seven books. There are seven kids in the Weasley family and all of that.
SPEAKER_03It's a famously suspicious, it has a lot of significance attached to it, doesn't it? The number seven people do attach a lot of significance. Yeah. Yeah, I guess so. I mean Lucky Number Seven is a thing, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Lucky number seven.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And there's going to be a series. I'm pretty excited for it, to be honest, Harry Potter, the HBO thing. Even though people are trying to cancel it out of the gate because, you know, she's a turf and all the rest of it. So we'll see.
SPEAKER_02Every second counts. 127 hours. Yeah. You remember this one? Oh, did you? After Slumdog Millionaire, this is what or soon after Slumdog Millionaire, this is what Danny Boyle got up to with James Franco. And based on uh a true story, film follows.
SPEAKER_00James Franco's sort of rapey one, isn't he?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Aaron Ralston's struggle to survive after he went bouldering or climbing alone in Utah. Just biking. He was on his bike. He was on his bike, then did a bit of climbing, and he was like listening to music and he was jumping over rocks. And then suddenly a kind of freak accident meant that his hand became trapped within this canyon and there was no way out for him other than to Yeah, his arms like pinned behind a boulder the size. Or off his own arm.
SPEAKER_00I would have waited for erosion to take this natural.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is well that's it. A lot of people would have died, you know, to to actually get through. I mean, what did he end up cutting his arm with?
SPEAKER_03Like the pen knife or it's not that's not the worst bit. It's having to use his own body weight as torque to break his own arm so that he could because that was and then he to cut. He'd have to break the arm. That's horrible. Yeah, it's horrible.
SPEAKER_02You know, the thought of dying there is pr pretty pretty horrible too. And then he actually climbed out, and I remember the the scene where he goes, he's just so converted and it's just cigarette playing awful water.
SPEAKER_03Stagnant Men in Water, and he's just like diving into it like And the music is crescendoing because he's finally been found.
SPEAKER_02And and then you see him, the real him at the end, and he's got like a hook hand, you know. Yeah. And it was it was actually put up for like six nominations in the Oscars. Best picture, best play original. Yeah. And do you know how many it won? None. Zero. It wasn't seven, that's right. It was only up for six and it didn't win any. Bad times. But it was decent movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I've got seven psychopaths, which I know we mentioned earlier, but that was it's probably one of my favourite films. Martin McDonough and Colin Colin, Christopher Walken. Yes, yeah, Sam Rockwell. Seeing it's Tom Waits, isn't it? Yeah. Oh, it's honestly it's amazing. It's there's quite a few rabbits in strong recommend. Very strong.
SPEAKER_02Woody Harrison in it as well.
SPEAKER_04Um very good. I I I really, really liked it. And I every few months I'm a bit like, should I put that on again and just kind of just just see how it's been a time since I've seen it, to be honest.
SPEAKER_02It's it's brilliant. I I loved it. It was the guy who did In Bruges, wasn't it? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Martin Madonna, yeah. It's it's brilliant and it's it will be probably for the I know we've all seen it except for you. Well, I'm not. It might be a NOM or one day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, maybe we'll get Martin on the pod after Brad is here first.
SPEAKER_03We've just got a cue people beating down our door. Comics. Um thinking of a few franchise sevens, so Star Trek seven with Star Trek Generations, the one where Kirk killed. Star Wars the Force Awakens, that's also terrible. Also really bad, yeah. Uh Joe Zoom. We went to Cinema together to see that one. We did. Do you remember how excited we were? Because it was like new Star Wars film, and you're like, I think it might be shit. I think that might have just been shit. Pointless fan service. Yeah. With clearly no future direction. Anyway. Halloween number seven in the Halloween series was Halloween H2O. We'd see that as well. Oh, I saw that cinema. Yeah. It was a good one.
SPEAKER_00Some people got kicked out of the cinema where we're watching it and it's good. Alright. Really?
SPEAKER_03What else? Where's Craven's new nightmare was number seven in the related Where's?
SPEAKER_02Where's yeah?
SPEAKER_03Where's Craven? Yeah. Didn't they where you made them surprise? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Looked at me as if I what do you mean?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Where's and Dan Craven. Yeah. That was the really postmodern one where everybody was playing both themselves and so he Robert Englund played himself and Freddie, and Wes Craven played himself as Wes Craven and all sorts of stuff in it. Oh right. I haven't seen it. And that's probably it before Noms, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Couple of music ones. Seven Nation Army. Yeah. By the White Stripes. I've actually got a delivery at home. I haven't opened it yet. It arrived, arrived a week. I don't know why I've not opened it. It's um I have a subscription to Third Man Records, Jack White's record label, and I get a quarterly delivery of final. But that's a fucking tune. Just seven by Prince. I think Prince might be a fucking dickhead to be honest. He could play guitar though. Yeah, he could wail. Your mate David Bowie also has a song called Seven. Prince's One was the number seven. Bowie's is the word seven. Yeah. And who could forget S Club Seven? By Cyclo with that. Songs and that. They had the one Don't Stop, never give up. Thank you, don't stop. I don't know the names, but one of them went on to celebrity big brother and turned out outed herself as a massive racist and she was quite funny. Rachel Stevens. Yeah. And I'm going to say maybe even pre-date Sprit pop. Maybe by a couple years, but Shed Seven were a band.
SPEAKER_03I played football then. Oh. Did you? Yeah. Remember when they had the Radio One Road show that came over here? And I went up on stage to do the what was it, headline or dudline thing. Right. That they used to do. And then backstage for played football.
SPEAKER_00Kicked your feet around. Nice. They're probably old enough to play walking football by now. Yeah. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden. Oh yeah. Nice. We've never had them on the pod before. No. So they go. I'll just go nom after that.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well I'll I'll go into almost nom mode. Just one that I remember as as a kid. It wasn't quite the the Doris day, but it was that kind of era, American musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Did you ever see this movie? Yeah, it's a good one.
SPEAKER_03It's Glen Bodie's favourite movie.
SPEAKER_02Really? Oh really? There you go. Yeah, it's it's sort of set in 1850s, Oregon or something, the middle of nowhere, and she gets married and realizes that she's got to live with her husband's seven brothers, six brothers as well, but she kind of finds helps find them seven brides. So it won Academy Award for Best Musical Picture back in the day, and it was one of those MGM kind of musicals, lots of choreograph dancing and singing, and it's still classic songs that we sing to this day when we're not on air. Yeah, yeah, all the time. All the time.
SPEAKER_04I've got the norm is the seven samurai, which is basically the the first inspiration for everyone. Curosaur. The seven uh Magnificent Seven Magnificent Seven and then the remake and all the other stuff. I I I'm pretty sure we had this film on cassette on the VHS. Nice. Are they all curious from it? No, no. They uh will in in in our apartment building where there was 120 flats. Oh you remember. Everyone would share kind of but the same there were the same, I don't know, ten films, and they were all dubbed in Iranian and they were all the the sound was because obviously it was dull, it was it was didn't sound great, but there were the same films that we would always watch constantly because that's all we had. Yeah. And sometimes we would have we would borrow, especially when we were younger, the VHS with the VHS player. Okay. Because by the time until my parents could afford to buy one, we would just borrow the one from the neighbor with whatever VHS tapes they had. So that's some good community vibes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was like that. Yeah, that was how great made me. Yeah. Yeah. And especially for whatever the 50s or whatever it was. 50 maybe. Uh I think so, something like that. And then say 1950 something. All of that stuff, like George Lucas has lifted all the samurai stuff for Star Wars as well. Yeah. 1954 it says. A legendary so that's my norm.
SPEAKER_02Nice.
SPEAKER_03I'm looking through my list of movies here at the seventh, and what's jumping out to me is I don't even know if it is this one, but Transformers Rise of the Beasts. Is that the one that's a little bit more? Oh, that's where the um CGI Hopkins gets blown up. Isn't that the best moment of all of the Transformers movies?
SPEAKER_00That's the one that's got Grimlock and people in the Dynabots in, yeah. Yeah. I had the toy of Grimlock. Me Grimlock. Yeah. They had one called Slag, which always amused me as a child. They're doing currently, I think it it oh is it finished now? The the Transformers Apology tour. What's that? They it's been an anniversary of the Transformers movie where they killed off Optimus Prime and like just like crushed a load of kids, like broke kids' hearts. They tried to throw Rodimus Prime at us and nobody wanted it. Well, it was Hot Rod. There was one in Ultra Magnus first. Total square. He was shit. Who the fuck is this guy? Yeah. And then at least he had Hot Rod, and Rodimus Prime was like a cool car. Yeah, he was a bit chewed.
SPEAKER_03Ultra Magnus was just basically a total lose machine, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Fuck off, we've got a loser. So they've re- they've done the they're reshaping the film at the cinema, but they've added in a new bit of Optimus, is he dead, is he not? Oh, that's awesome. I fucking love that film, it's so good. I'm torn between the I've got that, I've got that on single. It's either a Simpsons one, but we always have Simpsons ones, don't we? So that was gonna be Sector 7G. Oh yeah. And Sector C Ben Gruben. One of the like my favourite way to describe like on productive paperwork is one of the chairmoisteners from Sector 7G. But I won't go for that. I will put in Final Fantasy VII. Oh Cloud Strike. Which was a video game I played a lot. I had it when we were in Plymouth. Yeah. On the original PlayStation. I think it came on multiple discs because it was like it was such an epic. Yeah. It had to it couldn't be contained on one disc. Right. And it was fucking excellent. And it did it also told you how many hours you'd spent on the game. Um suppose more than seven, put it that way, but it was fucking fucking excellent. Yeah. That sort of turn-based RPG type thing. Yes. They've remade it recently. They did, yeah. But only part of the story, I think. I don't know. But that was epic.
SPEAKER_01Really good.
SPEAKER_02Well, I've got a magnificent one for mine. It is the the Magnificent Seven. Your brilliant. It's obviously based on the remake presently with Chris Pratt, but I'm not doing the remake. Are we trying to cancel him now? Is he your brenner?
SPEAKER_03Why? He's like a some sort of appalling fundamentalist Christian. He's a Christian, isn't he? So is that does that get you cancelled these days?
SPEAKER_04Everyone's a dick these days. But is he a dick though? Or is he just a Christian? I don't know. It seems quite funny. Anyway, not that, right, Dan?
SPEAKER_02Umbrenner. This was, you know, it it just transplants the the seventh samurai into the old west, but it does it with uh a brilliant cast of all Hollywood stars and and it does it well actually. I mean I watched this one as a kid and you know it's the classic Chris Chris questions which which ones survive. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I can't remember.
SPEAKER_02And it's you know the they're not all of them. No, there's only two of them and two, I think. Tears two. Tears tears were shed when you were a kid and you realised like oh that he's you like that one or you like the other one and is he's dead. They've all got they've all got their own kind of characters and they will show bravery at different times, and so I will enter that into our highly sought-after top five and wait for somebody out there to produce well let give us three more and let's make it a top seven this week.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I like that. Yeah, yeeeha.
SPEAKER_00Right, Mickey's 17. Yeah. We only recently did a Bong Jun Ho movie, Memories of a Murder. Yeah. And we're back. Here we are.
SPEAKER_04That was his first one, I think, The Memories of a Murder.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is his Oh that was the seri the serial killer one. This is his seventh one, let's say. Yeah, it's probably not true. I hadn't seen this before, but I was aware of what it was and what it was about. Yeah. Likes to be take a kind of edgy role these days, isn't he? Yeah. And so yeah, went into it going, oh, what's this about? And it was a strong recommend from uh we Jimmy, who did it came on the pod a few weeks back when you two were and Dan and I was it hosted Jamie. This is a Jamie recommendation. Oh Jimmy!
SPEAKER_05Hunt about He loves that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So it opens up with um in Strife. In in covered in snow. Yeah, he's half frozen and he's down a crevasse. Yeah. And things aren't looking good for that. He's not looking at it. It's and he's doing a voiceover about well, I thought I'd already be dead, but I thought I'd be and he goes through what might what he thought would have happened to him as he's obviously fallen from way up high. Yeah. His equipment. And we I think we know straight away that this is not Earth. We're given the sort of quick exposition about this is some planet, it's Milfheim. It's way in the future. Milfheim. Yeah. 2050 or something. 2050, something like that. And then Stephen Young appears and is like, what's it like to die? Do you catch his character's name?
SPEAKER_03Chad or something. Timo was his character's name. Oh, they're all named. Because of the Tottenham connection that runs throughout the city. Timo Werner, yeah. Yeah. Um the other Kai the other character Kai, named after Kai Havertz. And because he's a Tottenham fan, apparently. Poor guy. I already l like him way less than I used to. Yeah. And seventeen was apparently picked for Kevin De Bruyne.
SPEAKER_01So that's got nothing to do with Tottenham, sadly. No.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, that's the that's kind of open, and he's then he's like sees some sort of creature.
SPEAKER_03The rope doesn't really go all the way down all the way down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it meant a bit more work. What's it like to die? That's what he says to it. Yeah, what's it like to die? And then he sort of looks into these fucking creatures and he's like, Well, I hope it fucking eats me at one go. I you know, really fancy this. Yeah, the shit that's. And you just see it fucking charge towards you. It looks like a kind of Maggot giant Maggot E source. What are those things? Louse. No, the tiny microscopic Like a tardigrade type.
SPEAKER_03No, like a giant tardigrade or something. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. And so Mickey, and he's doing a sort of very affected wise guy type accent, I think, Robert Pattinson in this movie. He based the voices he was doing this on Renan Stimpe.
SPEAKER_01Oh, did he really?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Okay. I'm not sure he quite got that from it, but it's definitely an accent that he's doing.
SPEAKER_00It's an unbelievable anime show that we've got to be. I've got something to show you, Chris. If he once reviewed it for the pod, it's just so fucking bizarre. Okay. It's great.
SPEAKER_03It's completely surrealist type stuff. And he's narrating that he's he explains that he's an expendable, basically, and you know, they're waiting for him to be reprinted.
SPEAKER_02And we'll we'll learn what an expendable is.
SPEAKER_00It's yeah, it's basically a We get a sort of supercut of him before we go back to the don't we? We get all the different ways that he's there's one where he's outside, he's doing like a Well, I th don't we first get the explanation as to why he's here before we get all that?
SPEAKER_03I can't remember what's going on. It's in and around that.
SPEAKER_02But one of the things is he kind of gets 3D printed. You see him sort of shifting. I like the way he jerks, he jerks out. It's so funny. And the scientists around are just that not bothered by him that a couple of times. They just he just kind of falls out altogether, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_00And he's so it's clearly we're in outer space, we know that from the start. And one of the ones where they're like sending him out to do a space walk, and they're like, anyway, you're about to be blasted with like unspeakable levels of radiation. Your skin's about to fall off. Tell us what's like we want to know how it feels, and then blah blah blah. And just take your glove off. And as he's doing that, just something just comes past and just like chops his hand straight off.
SPEAKER_02Wow, wow, and they and they'll laugh. Yeah, they do all laugh. Um because yeah, they're just gonna 3D print him again.
SPEAKER_03So that's he's basically the ultimate sort of commodification of labour, basically. You can you're sold and printed out a bit like the sort of same concept behind moon, in a way. And we get we flashback to see how they got into this situation. Macarons and with yeah, yeah. They stay him and Timo had a macaron business that they got into trouble with organizing. With a loan shark. With a loan shark.
SPEAKER_02They borrowed money on a on a fairly rubbish. They've got these shit t-shirts for some sort of pun about macarons. Yeah. A fairly rubbish business deal, and and you're into the future and you you realise they they had those ball things, didn't they, that they send in to capture them? To capture them in the first place and and take him back to the guy's just like chainsawing off legs of people that owe money. He said we don't actually need the money, he just this guy just loves to see people dying and to see them suffer. See them suffer and the and the looks on their faces and things.
SPEAKER_00So there's a there's a fleet going off led by Mark Ruffalo's kind of bonkers. He's Trumpy, Marshall. He's he's a he's a politician. And you can sign up for various different roles, but the chances of you getting picked for the mission depend, you know, there'll be there'll be you know on your level of skill. There'll be a shitload of people wanting to do the top job, and you might be one out of thousand picked for that. But if you go for an expendable, yes.
SPEAKER_03Well, Timo manages to get on as a pilot, even though he's only been driving for a week or whatever, and Robert Pattinson signs up as an expendable, and it's pretty clear he doesn't really read the really and then like bring somebody else over. You really did you read this? Yeah, of course I did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, and he goes, Of course, I hadn't read it all, and they they lead him into a kind of chamber and sit him down and he's going on the on the trip, but first he's got to shoot himself and then he's gotta Yeah, they are first they have to up they upload their memories into a brick thing, basically.
SPEAKER_03So it's like a permanent reset save point basically for you to have your memories downloaded. As part of it, you get a real powerful throwback of your own memories, and it's quite crucial because he had a traumatic event where he killed his or so he believes he killed his mother in a car accident by pressing a giant red button booster that because it will tie into the big red button at the end, obviously. Um so yeah, he'll relive that memory and then be told to shoot himself to prove that.
SPEAKER_02And he's been he's been printed so many times, and we eventually go back to number 17, who is the Mickey in the crevasse.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we do also learn as well that cloning is so dangerous it's only allowed out in space. Well it's been banned, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It's been banned on Earth, yeah. Apart from Mark Rufflow, who said that he will do it safely, but it won't ever be done on Earth. It'll only be done in mill time. And there won't be anything we'll learn a little bit later as multiples because two people be cloned. That's it. That would be more difficult. But we find out that these alien beings that find him and look like they're about to eat him actually don't want to eat him, and they turf him back out and help him out the crevasse and they all gate get together and they they lift him up. He can't understand why he's been not eaten. Oh, it takes him about another twenty minutes to work out that they're gonna be. Nasha on the way out. She's just like on the way out onto the because we it flashes back a few times, isn't it? And he's on this journey out for the first four years.
SPEAKER_00I like this because they Journey. They're having it's like prison food, like rattles.
SPEAKER_03They have very strict calorie controls, right?
SPEAKER_00107 calories too much. Something moves onto his plate and the alarm goes off, like there's too many calories. And then they do a Mark Rufflow does a bit of X, which is a basically sexual intercourse is banned whilst you're on the trip out to the planet because that would that would kill off you know the maths that would just kill off you know food reserves. Yeah. Because you can only you're only allowed to have so many calories intake a day, you're gonna burn X amount of calories a day. So this is how it will but once we get there, we're gonna kind of populate.
SPEAKER_02It's gonna be a sex fest.
SPEAKER_03But meanwhile He's just shagging left right and centre. He's shagging left, right, and centre, and lives in absolute opulence with his wife, Tony Collette, as ill for This is a bit like they're like so disconnected from what's happening on the you know, like you say, they're they're having calorie-controlled slop to d to eat, and in his obsessing over sources. Yeah. Um different breeds.
SPEAKER_02So well, it's quite bizarre because they're in this spaceship hurtling towards this planet, it flashes back, he's got a girlfriend, and there's actually a few girls that are kind of after him. He seems to be quite sought after. He's quite buff, isn't he? When you do see him in the top of it, like fucking.
SPEAKER_03Well, it's Robert Pattons, and I know he's playing kind of a dork, but it's still Robert Patton's. Well he is Patton, that's it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they they they have this four-year journey, and they do get to the planet and he's sent out, and they realize that there's gonna be a few more deaths because once they've arrived, there's some sort of airborne virus, and as soon as he takes a breath and comes back in, he's like puking blood and dies, and it's just like done enough times that it's not.
SPEAKER_02But he's their guinea pig, so he keeps on getting sent out.
SPEAKER_00They have to keep doing this, Jim, so that then they can work out the back scene or the sorry the virus.
SPEAKER_03It's when we catch up basically with the beginning of the movie where Mickey 17 returns back to the base and sort of sneaks in, they're bringing this stupid fucking rock in for Marshall, President Marshall, whatever it is. He gets back into the base, gets back to his room, and wouldn't you fucking know it, he's already there? Reprinted 18 because he they assumed that he was dead. And I think one of the probably more like weird moments for him, they've hinted at this idea already that this is a kind of an imperfect print job. And actually, although they said that it's the same Mickey that's coming back, it's a slightly different tweet. And Mickey 18 is completely different. He's a great one.
SPEAKER_00Someone flips over the thing, the brain thing. Oh yeah, and they had to unplug it. I think something had happened. Rewired it or whatever, yeah. Um and we are told about what is used to reprint them, it's like shit, and like all the reprocessed like stone, like oh, so people are made out of shit, basically. Yeah. It's nice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But that's it. He he suddenly becomes this much more verbally aggressive. He's more alpha, this guy alpha than and he's into some like the the drugs, he's into the well they've all started huffing this stuff that powers the flamethrowers.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And Timo has become a dealer in this stuff. Yeah. And that'll get him into direct trouble with both 17 and 18.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. There's there's fights involved in in which they dispose of the body down this kind of hot lava pit and they realise that they need each other more than particularly when the girlfriend Nasha finds out because she's well into it.
SPEAKER_03She's horny. She's like basically, I let's just fuck. Yeah. That was her first thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which is really horny. She just put slighting lipsticks 17 and 18.
SPEAKER_04No, no, don't do it. You can have one, I'll have the other one.
SPEAKER_02And Yeah, it's it's quite it's quite a a different premise. I mean, I I had never seen any even trailers for this film. I must admit it was completely new. I'd not heard of it before you'd pointed it out. And to this point I was just getting used to right what Mickey 17 is, what this film will be like, and I must admit it wasn't dragging for me. I was I was really interested. Yeah, yeah. I was I was really kind of enjoying the the the the pace of it, the slightly bizarre characters, the tone that the tone that I thought was weird.
SPEAKER_00I didn't remember that it was like an out and out comedy or what exactly it was.
SPEAKER_02Well it was tongue-in-cheek kind of thing. I mean it it was a a comedy for me, but also there was because of the the characters. I mean, Rufflow made it a a comedy because he's ridiculous, isn't he? Very over the top. Even his teeth are as kind of Well, he's doing a Trump impression for a lot of it.
SPEAKER_03And then, you know, there's sometimes they're wearing red hats and stuff in the front of the thing. I think it's very unsubtle, and I think it's a bit it's a bit of a missed target because the he's just a buffoon in this, and it that's the dangerous thing about Trump, is uh, you know, you can't just go he's just a buffoon because he's doing all this other fucking bullshit as well.
SPEAKER_02Well it's it's it's over the top kind of stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean I thought it was just it in this is a buffoon, and it's really it's Tony Collette who's telling him, she's whispering to him like he's the puppet and he's been told what to do by the other people. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But most of it is about the exploitation of the labour force, basically, and the haves and the have nots, and the fact that they're and the indigenous people or the indigenous critters in the street.
SPEAKER_02Critters, right? He calls them creepers, doesn't he? Creepers, they become they need to be exterminated. And they all need to go, even though they begin through through the Mickey and one of the scientists has developed a translator. A translator, and they start to think, actually, he didn't get eaten, you know, just because you don't understand him. They actually helped him out. Well they've captured one as well, haven't they?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, where they want to make sauce out of their tail.
SPEAKER_03That's what it'll do.
SPEAKER_04It came out from that rock, though. Yeah, it came out from the rock. Oh, yeah, it came out from the rock. Yeah, on the talk show. She chops up the tail. Meanwhile, they discover that there are multiples and they're basically having an ad hoc trial while she chops up this tail and blends it, and then there's a lot of shitters around the spaceship. Yeah. They're like, oh, what's the they look like a turd covered in chocolate, ha ha ha. And then they send him out with the instead of killing him, they're like, okay, well, you go out, you chop as many tails as you can so I can make my absolute sauce. Yeah. And you you have this device, the nerdy, specky looking scientist gives him the it's not perfect, but I think it might be able to translate with him, which at this point it was a direct reference to Project Hail Mary, or the other way around. I know, I can't even remember which one was first. But it's the same like Project Hail Mary, where he just as a magic comes up with some translator device and then the big fat whatever you call it, the blubber thing starts to him and tells him No, we want the baby loco or something, whatever. Loco, local and loco. And we want them back, and then he's like, Well, you're not getting one of them back because he's dead. And the other one we need tit for tat, we need eye for an eye.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then we want something back, and then or what? And they say, or we're gonna kind of bring out this high pitch, it's gonna make your eyes explode.
SPEAKER_03They start all making this wibbly noise before. Yeah, like they're like, Okay, right, we'd better go. He says it's specifically gonna make your eyeballs explode.
SPEAKER_02We we've already established that there's they're doubles, and that is the kind of one thing these expendables cannot be. They cannot make multiples of each other, that is like the worst thing. And if that was to happen, then both multiples would be killed and their memories erased and they'd be gone from the earth forever. So that is what's hanging over Mickey 17 at the moment. Now they've been exposed, but they in fact get sent out into the into the Arctic kind of conditions to get these tales.
SPEAKER_03But he's got the translator from the They've been sent out with bombs strapped to them to go and blow them up with this experimental gas, and Marshall himself is leading the charge in these like giant rover things that he's gonna be.
SPEAKER_02But he's getting it he's getting advice from his number two saying how historic it will look, and you know, the politician in him is is following this poor advice. The propaganda, he wants the propaganda a bit all.
SPEAKER_03And it comes to it that he is actually the one that pays the ultimate price because he gets blown up and as they There's still There's a kind of Mexican standoff thing that started back at the base as well, with the revolution as sort of the you know, the people have suddenly decided to rise up against the establishment as well. And it that sort of came out of nowhere, really, didn't it? Suddenly they've got guns and they turn it round on Tony Colette and all that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it all turns out that the creepers were a nice lot after all. Yeah. And and then we even get some resolution once the eye for the eye bit's gone and they've had a life for their critters' eye, it becomes autumn or spring, doesn't it? There's not so much blizzard around. There's not so much blizzard around it.
SPEAKER_00Because it looked like a fairly bleak place to kind of try and Yeah, it still didn't look great even in spring, but even if you have loads of sex.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, I've I don't know what what was what was Earth no good for? Was it just away?
SPEAKER_04Everyone wanted to get away. A reason to get out, no, like they owned money, the other guys did this. Well they were crimson. It's like Australia.
SPEAKER_03It's like Australia, basically, exactly. Sorry, Mal. So they and so it ends with them, you know, turning over the establishment, getting rid of the getting rid of the they have like a ceremony to get rid of the printing. They decide that because Mickey 18 sacrificed himself in that moment, and they decide the technology is too awful to let a corporation have the ability to print you out, basically. So Mickey 17 is given the cathartic red button to press this time to destroy the printer. Not before he has like a little dream sequence in which he imagines finding another printer and Tony Colette starting to print thingy again. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, was that a dream? Yeah. Right, okay. I stopped paying attention by the way.
SPEAKER_02Well, he he he had already, you know, had a a kind of heart to heart with Mickey 18, yeah who who convinced him, look, you take too much blame on on all the the car crash kind of incident yourself. You know deep down it wasn't your fault, that red button didn't do shit. And between the two personalities, the different sides of him, somewhere was that confidence in that he had to find in himself, he that nicer version of himself, and he kind of becomes, you know, more confident and in himself, he's still got his girlfriend.
SPEAKER_03I think he's able to forgive himself the trauma and all that stuff. I think Mickey 18's helped him with that because he reframed his childhood trauma. He said, No, that was a mechanical fault of the car. So the same person having the same experiences reframing it.
SPEAKER_02Mickey 17 at one point, yeah. I mean, he's disappointed they don't eat in the crit, isn't he? I'm good meat. I'm good meat. Um he's he's kind of that lost with himself, but by the end of it, he's he's kind of dealt with the creeper chaos, he's been captured, he's escaped, he's found his his way in the world, and they all seem to realise he's actually a valuable member of of the team.
SPEAKER_03And we get the little flicker at the end, don't we, from as they've outlawed the multiples, is Mickey 17 goes to Mickey Barnes. And yeah, and with him having claimed the identity of Mickey Barnes.
SPEAKER_02And and Nasher has taken a leadership role guiding the settlement. But he gets the honour of actually blowing up the the printing machine, doesn't he? At the end there. So and and that's kind of it. It's a new chapter for humanity on the planet.
SPEAKER_03So Chris, I'm getting the sense that you won't be watching Mickey 18. This was a complete waste of time.
SPEAKER_04A complete waste of time from starting to finish. I didn't understand any of the jokes and there was nothing funny. Honestly, this was by by the time they got first time when they got out the two of them, which was still way too much that I should have watched this film, I was already on my phone and I was just like honestly, I started in the order for the cafe by like ordering bagels and avocado because I thought it was more interesting than watching this film. Yeah, I didn't really get over there either, to be honest.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I hated this as well. I didn't hate it, but I got so far into it and had to pause it to do something else. I had to go and pick up my daughter. I was like, wow, there's so much left to go. Exactly. I honestly exactly the same. I was like, fucking, I thought it was only I thought we were getting to the end and there was still loads, and I didn't really get the tone of it and I just find it like a bit dragged a bit. I wasn't really taken with Robert Patterson's performance in it. Yeah. The way not that it was a bad one, but the the what he was doing with it. Yeah. But like you say, it's like Moon had had the sort of you know, cloning stuff, and yeah, it didn't land for me this one, yeah, unfortunately. I had high hopes for it, but it just it was a bit of a miss, I thought.
SPEAKER_02Yeah personally. Well, I I went in not knowing anything about it. Obviously, Boon's or Bong's English language Boon Bong language films, Octa, Snowpiercer, we've seen before. We've done both of them for the pod. Have you done Snowpiercer? I think so. No, we haven't, but I have seen it. Oh right. Well, we've talked about it on the on the pod before. And but what about this one? I I really enjoyed it. I really thought it was, I say, a really nice surprise. I was really in the mood for this kind of movie. It was lighthearted, it was it was that sci-fi that I like, it was a completely different kind of take on on these into the future movies. There was laughs for me in within him getting reprinted with him saying he's he's good meat. I really like Patterson's performance in it. I liked Nasha, his his girlfriend, I thought she was really hot. And I I just thought the the the pace of it, and I wasn't second screening at all. I was I was really into it. And and okay, towards the end it may have s felt a little bit rushed that the the the way that it all came together, but it was always gonna do something like that. You know, you realise that these quitters as soon as the viewer realized that they didn't eat him, they were there to help him, and you had a lunatic president who was wanting to blow everything up, and yeah, it might have been a bit heavy-handed in in that kind of thing, but yeah, I went with it, enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. What do you think, Reese? I was probably closer to Dan. I can see where everybody's coming from. I was probably closer to Dan than anybody else, in opinion. It's wildly uneven and very bloated. Yeah. But it I did make me laugh. I did enjoy it. I think it's gonna hinge on whether or not you like get vibe with the sense of humor and the kind of crazy world that he's created. And I did also like Pattinson's performance. So a lot of those things are gonna carry it for you. Chris, you were never gonna like this movie. It's just not the sort of thing. I didn't know anything. I agree with sci-fi.
SPEAKER_04No, it's not about the sci-fi. I liked Project Helmary, and that was a sci-fi, right? And and that was obviously hardly believable. The most handsome man in the world is gonna be the s smartest man in the world, too. How funny. This was I also didn't understand. He wasn't like he wasn't that attractive, and all these women, like the the Kai and the other one, they're all throwing themselves at him. I'm just like there's other and okay, there's these other dicks around it, the one with the wonky eye and all that that they show them at one point. But it's just like n none of the gags, even the ones with the with the printer thing. Even that I thought, because for me the p initially when they show you the first time that, there's no context, so you don't know that these people are on a ship for four years and they're bored and they don't really give a shit about this person who's inexpendable so they can reprint him in the next five minutes. It was just like, oh they're there, but this guy's falling out of the machine. But why is it funny? Because you don't know the context, so how is this funny when I I don't know, I it just didn't really work for me.
SPEAKER_03I've seen other I think that's just the physical humour of watching a guy on a thing like that. But also I don't know, I quite like the idea behind the whole thing.
SPEAKER_02I I al I also liked T-Barr, his just absolute cuntness of of just his performance of you know, it was his friend that he had this business with, but he just sells him down the river. Who T-Bar Timo Timo T Mo, sorry, yeah, Stephen Yun. And just the way that he doesn't really care about him so much. He's just so selfish, you know. He's just got that kind of Well, he's just afraid of Darius Blake. He's yeah, he's afraid, but only for himself, you know, he's he's only afraid he's but it I don't know, it just tickled me that that performance and and that character as well. So I enjoyed it. It's clearly not gonna be for everyone, but I'm right and you're wrong, and everybody's a winner, I think.
SPEAKER_03So seventeen out of seventeen? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, seven is is a strong seventeen for me. Yeah. Okay, well, we're gonna be back here again.
SPEAKER_00What's next week? It's been since we last recorded, there's been one whole press secretary of the United States. Yes. Five days she lasted. Yeah. Wow. Did you see her opening? Well one and only. No, come on.
SPEAKER_02Remind me, I d I there was Oh, it was something to behold.
SPEAKER_04Was that the blonde? Yeah. Yeah, I've seen that. I'm not sure. Was she a lawyer? But not really. Not really. Self-proclaimed, I think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who's nomining for next week?
SPEAKER_03It may be no, I don't think it's me because I did bowling me, didn't I? Okay, then I did seven. And then it's Daniel.
SPEAKER_02Is it back around to me? Sorry, I've I've come underprepared, but that will come out if you're enough. I've come on stuck. I know what my next noms are, but I would say watch Tenzing, but I won't put that as the nom this week. I will find as another one.
SPEAKER_00Okay, cool. All that remains is to say sidey signing out. Reeds has left the building. A lot of it. Dan's gone.
