Bowling & The Big Lebowski

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan, Reegs and Cris review The Big Lebowski, the Coen brothers’ 1998 Los Angeles stoner-noir starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Tara Reid, Peter Stormare, David Thewlis, Flea and Sam Elliott.

Bowling-adjacent week two kicks off with Sidey putting the film straight into his all-time top five before anyone has said a word. The dads frame it up as a Chandler-with-a-stoner love letter dropped into Los Angeles, with every character modelled on real people the Coens knew — Jeff Dowd as The Dude, John Milius as Walter — and every scene operating in a slightly different genre to the one before it.

Reegs and Sidey walk the opening: the tumbleweed, Sam Elliott’s cowboy voiceover, The Dude’s 69-cent half-and-half cheque dated September 11th 1991 in Gulf War Los Angeles, the two goons who break in, give him a bog wash looking for a different Lebowski’s money, and piss on the rug that really tied the room together.

From there it is straight into the bowling alley to meet Walter and Donny: Walter the Vietnam-vet, Judaism-converted rage monster who turns up with his ex-wife’s Pomeranian and pulls a revolver on long-haired pacifist Smokey over a line-foul call, and Donny the sweet, confused Steve Buscemi who keeps getting told to shut the fuck up. The dads trace the whole plot engine out of Walter’s decision that they should go and shake down the other, millionaire Lebowski in his mansion.

At the mansion the dads celebrate Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Brandt — the nervous laugh, the obsequious energy, the “Little Lebowski Urban Achievers”, the arms-up-at-right-angles stance Reegs still does when he is showing people around a room — and the Big Lebowski himself, a Logan-Roy-style tycoon in a wheelchair who despises The Dude on sight. There is the rug swap, the Tara Reid toe-painting / cock-sucking offer, and the first glimpse of Peter Stormare as Uli the nihilist by the pool.

Then it is full Coen chaos. The dads walk the dream sequence through the city, Julianne Moore’s Maude on a flying harness delivering strongly-vaginal paintings, Walter’s dirty-underwear ringer getting hurled out of the car in place of a million dollars, Jesus Quintana in his purple all-in-one licking the ball while the Gypsy Kings’ Hotel California plays, The Dude’s stolen car and Creedence tapes, Walter dressing up as a policeman and smashing a stranger’s Corvette with a crowbar while shouting about strangers’ asses (dubbed on the airline as “strangers in the Alps”), the marmot-that-is-actually-a-ferret in the bath, the arrival of the green-polished toe, Jackie Treehorn’s drug, the full Busby Berkeley bowling-musical “see what condition my condition was in” dream, the mug off the forehead in Malibu, and Maude turning up in a dressing gown with an extremely specific plan to get pregnant.

The dads single out two scenes. First, Walter smashing the wrong car outside Larry Sellers’s house, with the writer of 153 episodes of Branded sitting in an iron lung in the front room. Second, Donny’s death — the nihilist showdown outside the alley with the bitten ear and the bowling-ball groin shot, the modestly priced receptacle, the coffee-tin eulogy on the Pismo cliff that detours uncontrollably into Vietnam, the wind changing and depositing every ash into The Dude’s face and sunglasses, and John Goodman’s shoulders slumping like a child’s for a hug from his friend.

It drifts, deliberately, back to the bowling alley where The Dude will abide. Sam Elliott’s cowboy signs it off, there is going to be a little Lebowski on the way, and the dads tangent happily into twenty-plus years of Lebowski Fest, Iron Lung costumes, Jeff Bridges turning up in character for his Hall of Fame star, the jelly shoes and the big cardigan being his own clothes, and where the film sits in the Coens’ run alongside Blood Simple, Barton Fink, Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo.

Then the honest verdicts. Sidey keeps it in his all-time top five, with John Goodman’s Walter as a performance for the ages and the film that opened his eyes in 1998 to a world of cinema outside the blockbuster. Dan calls it a Stonewall classic he will watch and recommend as long as he watches movies, up there with Withnail and I for rewatch-and-quote energy. Reegs gives it “the strongest recommend I possibly can recommend.” Cris, watching it for the first time, loves John Turturro above all else, loved the gun-pull on Smokey, found parts of it tiring without subtitles, decided the Donny gag was done for him after one scene, and makes the sharp point that any 30-year-old mega-cult film comes to a first-time 2026 viewer slightly over-hyped. Bowling verdicts: strike from Dan, strongest-possible recommend from Reegs, personal top-five lock from Sidey, good-not-great from Cris, Turturro MVP from everyone.

SPEAKER_05

Time for some more bowling content. Yeah. I suppose before we get into that, does anyone watch anything new?

SPEAKER_04

Daniel? No, didn't really get to watch lots this week. I no, there was one thing that I watched that I can't remember. There. Yeah. More content like this coming along. Just stay tuned.

SPEAKER_01

Chris? I've got two more episodes of The Day of the Jackal. Okay. Which is I I enjoyed it. It's it's if I'm being honest, it's I think it's ten episodes, they could have done it in eight. Now it's already kind of dragging a little bit. Just waiting for the client. At the end, it's like, well, you you're gonna shoot the guy, you're not gonna shoot him, they miss all that stuff, right? So and this misses, she's nearly finding out. They could have kind of wrapped it in. But it's it's good. It's got a really nice t theme. The it's kind of like a they've done it in a way like Bond with its own theme. Remind me of what I watched. Thank you. Um, you know, the the soundtrack and the way the intro goes and all that. So they've done that. Which again, I I really enjoyed and it was it was actually quite good. I don't think I watched anything else because I didn't really have the time. But yeah, I'm pretty sure that's it. I watched that a couple of times, then I watched the homework. I might have watched something else, but again, it m it must have not been very memorable if I didn't remember it now. So that's pretty much it, I think.

SPEAKER_02

So I I watched the first episode of Mike Flanagan's new Amazon Prime Stephen King adaptation of Carrie, yeah. And uh there's been a few of those. There's the Brian De Palmer 70s original, the Sissy SpaceX. Maybe John Travolta. And John Travolta, there you go. And there was even a couple of sequels and another TV miniseries. This is quite good. I really like Julianne Moore. Yeah, there is, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which is quite topical for this week. Yeah, because we saw her naked this week, yeah. We did.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, I really enjoyed the first episode of that. Okay, cool.

SPEAKER_04

So I just remembered what I did watch. Gone. It was good luck, have fun, don't die.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I've seen that. Yeah. Did you like that?

SPEAKER_04

Sam Bokrow. I did like that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Gore Fabinski. Yeah. It's a bit strange.

SPEAKER_04

It is a bit strange, but yeah, it was all there you go. Uh the marriage made in.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, I saw a trailer for Artificial. Is it that? It's Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I haven't seen the trailer yet, but it looked a lot like well not like a bit like what's the one with the guy with Oscar Isaac? It's the Oh, ex machina. It looked a little bit like he's just walking into a thing and he goes into a room with the lights a bit like that. So it was a sort of but Sam Altman's not as interesting as that. He's just a fucking dick. So he he's like, Mankind needs to be okay with drinking less water. Okay. That's what he said this week. Well, let's start with you. How about you fucking die, you prick? I watched well I started watching Toy Story 5, uh-huh. The family watched it until my daughter got bored and was like, I'm gonna go and play upstairs and like, oh we'll we'll watch the red later, okay, fine. But I was getting alright with that. Yeah, that's okay. Uh I also watched on Saturday whilst in the doghouse, Goldeneye.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Golden though I was fucking out late on Friday night in the bed slash Saturday morning. And I've been watching Fargo, carried on with that, really good. And I also I'm not gonna say ashamed to say, but I am really hooked into traitors, celebrity traitors. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's it's fairly shit, yeah. But you can't help but like get involved, play along. Also, it's fun watching Ross Kemp being really paranoid, and super way too into it when it's like screw like chill out, mate, the fucking BBC thing.

SPEAKER_05

The tasks are so shit. Yeah. Um very dull.

SPEAKER_02

They should Do you want to watch it?

SPEAKER_05

Because things that you hate that are too long, this is a million, this is 20 minutes tops of content and stretch out for an hour to quite a bit.

SPEAKER_04

Oh no, that that makes me that makes me itch. Oh, it's about it.

SPEAKER_05

I've really got the hots for Hannah Fry, so I and I think she might be the next to go. Yeah. So that's like kept me entertained, and I really like James Akaster, but you also stay for the people you don't like as well, you know. So you're good.

SPEAKER_02

The Maya Jama, she's a good to look at.

SPEAKER_05

She's just like, I think that's what that's what everyone's like, she's so fit. No, no, they forget. Maybe she's traitor, I don't know. Do you see what she was wearing last week? She looks like the big bird. I thought it was more like sugar sugar puff thingy. Yeah. So yeah, and watch that I watched the homework.

SPEAKER_04

The mentalist has also been going down in our house. It's just one of those the next programme or many, many series that we watch, and all the time, like every episode that I've sat down and watched with the family, it's the the local county cop that has been the perpetrator, the murderer all the time. Every single time is like, yeah, it's like, you know who's done it, don't you? Yeah, it's that, and you go, no, no, and he comes back round and you go, Yeah, yeah, it's it's him.

SPEAKER_05

So we used to watch Bones, and they would always go to visit someone early on, and you'd only get them for about 30 seconds, and it always made that so formulatic, ridiculous, and just still come back for more. Just in case anyone's wondering, I think that we don't care anymore. We just didn't have a walking football. No walking football. And they do have a game next week. We've got this. So there will be updates.

SPEAKER_04

Is it that next week? This week.

SPEAKER_05

Pretty sure it's Sunday this week, yeah. Sunday this week. I can't remember the kick. We're still top of the league, though. If anyone is freaking out, we are still top of the league now. Top of the league, to be honest. Yeah. Played for one four. So we're going to talk about top five bowling. Yeah. Yeah. It's a strike. Yeah. Right, let's do that. Boom.

SPEAKER_04

Whose week was this?

SPEAKER_05

It's normally sort of your week. Was it?

SPEAKER_02

I thought it was I think it's sort of our week.

SPEAKER_05

It was meant to be weeks, but because you had ones to talk about.

SPEAKER_02

We just it emerged spontaneously. Yeah, it was just an organic.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Well, do you want to kick us off with bowling?

SPEAKER_02

It was hard though, wasn't it? Uh I am going to start with the Flintstones.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yabba dabba di. The twinkly noise that you made.

SPEAKER_05

And he's it was sort of um It doesn't seem like the technique that they would teach you. That's the one I use.

SPEAKER_02

When you go bowling, what's your you've got to be?

SPEAKER_05

First of all, I wear shoes.

SPEAKER_02

You've got the foot that comes through. Have you got your bowl?

SPEAKER_01

I don't really do that though. No. I I can't do I can't do the the swing at the back of the foot. I have to. I kind of do the one knee down, but not going backwards on myself. I just do the one knee down and that's it. The one like a like you're proposing Takira.

SPEAKER_03

No, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

There was a time when the bowling alley was new in Jersey and it was all the rage, and we would go, well. Especially because we knew they just. I went with you a few times? Yeah, yeah. And so then I would use a lighter ball, like a 10, and really try and like hoof it down. Yeah. And then later in life, I would use a much heavier ball and just let it do it slower. Yeah, to try it slower. But you put your lower lighter one, then I would do the knee thing. Yeah. Now I'd just like plonk.

SPEAKER_04

You wouldn't use the house balls though. You'd have your own, surely. And your own gloves.

SPEAKER_05

No, I I've only ever I'm ashamed to say Dan, I'm sorry to have the owner. But uh never got my own. Wow.

SPEAKER_02

There was a guy at my school that had one one sized foot was much bigger than the other. And when you went bowling well, in the interest of anonymity, I'll say his name was Ian McShmecken. So he when you went to the bowling alley with him, he'd have to say can have a size nine and a size five, please.

unknown

They're that different.

SPEAKER_02

And I would look at him like, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_04

Are you working all down? Is that real?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, no. I'm being real.

SPEAKER_01

What was his excuse for one size gigantic foot and the other one lily put? Is I don't know if it's an excuse. I mean is it just that's how he was, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. I don't know. I never really talked to him about his foot, really. Did you know how many toes? He was dead good at rugby. Yeah, he's still into rugby, I think.

SPEAKER_05

So I'm uh similar.

SPEAKER_02

But he didn't hold him back from that. And he was a kicker as well. He used to play fly half, I think.

SPEAKER_04

So which foot he kicked with.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't know. So Flintstones. The Flintstones, yeah. And the cartoon, they you they used to regularly go to the bowling alley and it would be some contraption, you know, worked by a fucking Pelican or whatever at the end of it. And then in the movie it had John Goodman. And I mention that because John Goodman features in our movie this week. And also another one of my nominations as well.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. Well, Simpsons. Yeah. There's an early episode where Marge gets a bit fucking put out by Homer because he buys her a bowl. He doesn't really.

SPEAKER_02

But she goes off with the French guy.

SPEAKER_05

With yeah, the the the bowling the guy at the bowling alley. Jacques, is it? Yeah. Then there is the episode. It's called Maggie Makes 3, where Homer's got his life to a certain point where he's able to fuck the power plant off and take his dream job working at Barney's Bowlerama at the local bowling alley. And it you can just they do like sort of montage of him going around. There's one bit where he puts his head in the bowling ball cleaner, and the boss comes along and he's like, Homer, did you put your head in the shine old pollo? Yeah. It's gleaming. And then Marge falls pregnant, and unfortunately, Homer has to take his old job. And it the whole thing is about why he's got Do it for There's no photos of Maggie in the photo album because they're all in the power plant blocking up there. Don't forget you're here forever and he's covered up. Because Mr. Burns has put up a demotivational slogan on the wall, but he's covered it up to make it into a good slogan with Maggie's pictures. So that was a good one. But the best one of all is Team Homer, where Homer starts The Pin Pals. I think it has my favourite line in all of The Simpsons where he says, I'm tired of being a wannabe league bowler, I want to be a league bowler. It's him, Mo, Apu and Barney and Barney as the pin pals, and they have their shirts made up of the pin pals. And it's Mr. Burns is high, he's high on Ether when he agrees to sponsor them. And then when he finds out they sponsor them, he forces his way onto the team, and he has the final end is down to Mr. Burns to get one pin to beat the holy rollers, is it? Yeah. And he bowls it down. It's like so flimsy he can't almost get the barball together.

SPEAKER_02

And on the wind machine looks flapping like paper.

SPEAKER_05

But Apu who's been it's not Barney, it's Apu who's been kicked off. Oh yeah, that's right. Apu, yeah. Who's been kicked off the team to make way for Mr. Burns. He's doing the little claw game, and he he he he mistakes the screw at the bottom of the claw machine, and it it it like takes the leg off the claw machine which falls over and then knocks the pin over, which gets them to win, so they win. And that shirt then appears later on in the Homer versus Homosexuality episode with John Waters when he thinks Bart might be gay and John Waters like, look at this shirt finds it in the in his shop. So so much bowling content in The Simpsons. And he bowls a three a perfect three hundred as well. Yeah, which is Have you done that? 12 strikes in a row, is it? It must be ten plus the two extra.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. You ever done that?

SPEAKER_05

No.

SPEAKER_04

No?

SPEAKER_05

Have you? I I think I might have done three in a row once.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. No, I've yeah. I think I might have done three strikes in the entire game. I was always happy if I got over a hundred. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But it wasn't something I spent a lot of time doing, I'd just say bowling. I'd always enjoyed a uh a day down the bowling alley. I think we should we should go bowling. I don't like him though that's done it up. Jonathan Rath. Oh no, is there a difference?

SPEAKER_02

If we can get beers and bowling though, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Could be fun. It could be fun. There was a good scene on Uncle Buck with bowling when the Uncle Buck is looking after the kids and he takes them bowling, and then you've got like the the younger children, Miles and Maisie, and and he sort of says, you know, if if the game was the object was getting close without knocking any of them over, then you'd be a world champion at this. But there's also the elder girl is mistaken as like a bit older than she is because she's in this place, and the guy starts chatting her up, and Uncle Buck kind of just keeping an eye on it, and then he's like, you know, that parental he seems to be so irresponsible he's taking the kids to what would be, you know, very much a an older generation place at a time it wasn't kids' family. But he knows right is right, and he's he's just looking after her, and he's he you know makes sure this guy gets the clear message that this is younger.

SPEAKER_05

You hear a lot of stuff about what he was like on the set as well, like everyone's fucking loved him. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, he seemed he seems a really good guy. You know, he was there's a a documentary about John Candy that goes through his films and he was a very good thing.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I think it's the prime thing, isn't it? Like being John Candy.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Yeah, lots of lovely stories, and he was a brilliant, you know, character actor and and funny in this as well. But yeah, that's one bowling scene I remember from from there. And uh was it Macaulay Culkin or was it a different yeah, it was, wasn't it? It was young Macaulay Culkin.

SPEAKER_01

I've got a film called well, it's a series called Married with Children. Oh yeah with Ed O'Neill. Yeah, and Apple Gear, yeah, Al Bundy, yeah. He loves he used to love bowling. Yeah. And he was a shoe salesman, but he just loved bowling, and his excuse to get out of the house would always be, and and him and his pals would always go bowling, and that was their escape, really, because his missus always wanted to have sex with him and she was hot. Yeah, and he never wanted to bair and shit. Yeah, and he never wanted to have sex with her, and okay, well. And it would be like to only at the extreme end of her pursuit that he would give in and give her Finally fuck her. Yeah, give her some, but other than that, she would just be always insinuating that she wants sex and he would never have it. But bowling was his big thing, and he would have it was it was the first one I've seen where uh someone would have a bag like with a bowling ball in it with the handles and everything, just custom made to clean it up. Yeah, a custom made bag for your own bowling bowl, and he would be like, Right, I'm going, and then even if he didn't go bowling, he would just take that thing with him and just carry it around and that I've seen your ball bag. Okay. It's good, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's got two in it though. Only one. Double balls. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Alright. What about when they blah blah blah blah. No, hang on. Let me think. What have I got? Oh, Lars and the Real Girl. We did it first. Oh no, yeah. Ryan Ryan Gosling. Ryan Gosling, yeah. Decent movie that's kind of lawyer. Considering this sort of sensational subject matter, because he has a blow-up doll as a girlfriend.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and we have a local guy over here who does something similar.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, that features a great, possibly one of the greatest miss throws I've ever seen, where he goes into the lane next door and he tries to throw the ball when he goes out towards the end of the movie when he starts branching out with the love interest Margot. Yeah. And they go bowling, and yeah, he he goes into all the support. It's a fantastic clip. I watched it today. It's it's it's a good dating place actually. I was gonna say, especially for teenagers. Yeah. Yeah. Did you ever go on a date bowling? I did. No, I didn't. Yeah, I did. What was the guy's name? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Oh. Do you get any strikes?

SPEAKER_02

I think I had a little kiss that night. Put your finger in any holes? No.

SPEAKER_05

Just the size 10. Oh, nice. Okay. Very good. Well, I have got a TV miniseries from 1984 called Bodyline. Bodyline, Bodyline. Harold Larwood's. I remember this one. It's the bowl, it's the bowling in the ashes cricket, England during the Bodyline series. It's the 1932, 1933 Ashes when they would try and take the sting out of the Australian batting. I think they would have had obviously.

SPEAKER_02

They invented the one bouncer per over rule after this, didn't they?

SPEAKER_05

And it's like the only way you could just like try and hurt the fuckers, like, you know. And then also on cricket terms, there's a it's a documentary. I had it on Blu-ray, I don't think I've got rid of it, but it's called Fire in Babylon, and it's about the rise of the West Indian cricket team.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Oh what called the Amber. Well, starting off under Clive Lloyd's and then getting bigger and better throughout the 70s and 80s and into the the basically unbeatable team, and then they had the bowling attack of holding Robert's Garner and Croft, and then Malcolm Marshall and Viv Richards, and like Viv Richards was a batsman, Clive Lloyd batsman as well. But the bowling attack just like absolutely brutal, especially if you went, if you were touring side games where he's on fast bouncy pitches, and there was really famous footage of Michael Gatting got hit in the face. I think it was by Malcolm Marshall. Malcolm Marshall is only small, like you think of them as all being like you know, your Michael Holdings and your Walsh and your Ambrose, who are big tall guys. Joe Garner was like seven foot, I think. So they're quick, but coming down, bounce pace. But Malcolm Marshall was deceptive, and he bolted, he was apparently the one of the most aggressive. And he hit Gatting in the face. And then it was Gatting arriving back in the UK because I don't think he'd carry on a tour. And they're like, you never exact did it. His face is just like right in the middle on his fucking beat, you know. His nose, like it's everything's like completely fucking destroyed. And uh but this is you know about more than just the the the team, it's about you know when they were coming through, just how fucking racist it was and all the shit they had to overcome, and it was really barren, and then getting through into the county scene, and then you've got things like Viv been, you know, a lot of them. I think Joe Garner and the Viv played Somerset with both of them, and you know, getting then getting a bit more integrated and people actually like really enjoying watching them, even though they just fucking beat you all the time. Yeah. And the the document is really good. It's called Fire and Babylon.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Excellent.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. I think I've heard of that. I here's one I've I've not actually seen, but whereas I was looking for for bowling, it's lawn bowls called Black Ball. Dennis Penis. With yeah, Johnny Vegas, Bernard Cribbins, and Vince Vaughan. Yeah. Have you seen this one? Yeah. James Cromwell is the I've not seen this one. No, it's uh it's a like they're challenging the old fashioned establishment. It's based on a real guy or something. Is it? Yeah. Right, okay. So I've not I've not seen it. It was just when I was looking at it and it said it was one of the best British picks for bowling and being lawn bowls, little little bit different.

SPEAKER_02

They've got lawn bowls over here.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Well, we've got the Lawn Bowl Association. And when they were moving the hospital, because it used to be up at It's on the hill there, the back of the thing. Yeah. And they were talking about having to move all that because they're wanting to build the the hospital. There's three. There's that one.

SPEAKER_02

There's the one up by Granville and then there's the one by uh one of the steepest hills in Jersey. Yeah. For a bowling. For a bowling.

SPEAKER_04

I used to work with a girl called Lindsay who was like Jersey but also like UK champion, or you know, really and and her daughter was very good as well. Oh, the accounts for that that oh from the the one at the one at Westmount. Are they gonna make it to the the following?

SPEAKER_05

This is a long time ago, but yes it's just a fucking charity, effectively, you know. Okay, yeah. It's contributions and behind. That's direct that film though, Blackboard, directed by Mel Smith. Do you remember him? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

From Last Smith and Jones. Yeah. They used to have up there at the the bowling place uh a nice bar as well.

SPEAKER_05

You could do functions there, but they were super strict because they were like really paranoid about the fucking lawn getting trouble.

SPEAKER_04

It definitely would have we would have been playing fiber on their dudes who have been walking football on their perfect pitch. Um and I'll mention our midweek because you can't mention bowling without saying keeping ball McCrown.

SPEAKER_05

So that's Paul Kay, who if anyone knows was Dennis Penis, and you might have seen him in Afterlife recently. But the real guy is a guy called Griff Sanders from Torquay, who was it it says famously banned in the 1990s. So he obviously didn't fit the uh the stayed kind of really prosaic version of Lawn. Was it called they call it Crown Green Bowls?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's like the happy Gilmore of Bowls. Effectively, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So that's exactly what the film is about. Yeah, okay. This guy's a total rebel. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I'm not I've not seen it, but yeah. And and obviously the the one that we'd watched for the midweek was Kingpin and Roy Munson being Munson's and and big Annie McCracken in Bill Murray brilliant role. You got another one there. I've got one nom after this.

SPEAKER_01

I've got the nice guys. Oh. Which they are in um well, they're actually playing Ryan again, isn't it? Yeah, Ryan Gosling and they're in a bowling ball alley, right? And the kid goes, You're the one that punched my dad. And he's like, and Ryan Gosling's like, sucker punch. Yeah. You beat up my dad, he sucker punched me. He didn't beat me up. They're in a bowling alley, they don't actually play. I fucking love that film. Honestly, it's amazing. It's one of my favourites.

SPEAKER_05

In fact, I was thinking today about what my top five, because I was thinking Lebowski is definitely in my top five. Spoiler alert for later on. And I was then I had two others now. thinking of that one I'm thinking that soon as well. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's not it's not a big pot in the like in the plot twist. There's not there's not but they just kind of Gossen kind of holds his nose and he's got a bit of ice pack on his face and whatever and Russell Kro is there just like yeah but so what?

SPEAKER_05

He's been a dick, whatever and great balance in case he's always telling his daughter not to say and that or and stuff is to stuff. And then later on when they're watching porn she catch at the party. No the porn stuff doing analyzing anal and stuff.

SPEAKER_01

She's like you don't need to say and stuff just say doing analyz stop saying and stuff and then she she tells her of the Yeah yeah it's funny. So yeah that and I've got yeah I've got a NOM and a and in a what do you call it honourable mention.

SPEAKER_02

Alright I'll go shall I just I'm gonna do two quick honourable mentions and then my nom. So I've got Split the James McAvoy M Knight Shamelan is that the one where you see it's got all different personalities personalities yeah yeah right so split obviously that's the term I've seen that yeah yeah right yeah yeah yeah yeah and spare Is Aria Dawson in that or do you want to have a different film? No it's got Anya Taylor Joy or whatever the name is yeah split I wasn't sure that it was a movie about bowling but yeah split and spare is another term in bowling that was the name of Prince Harry's autobiography in which you talked about his testicles. Uh he talks about his frostbitten penis. That's it's dick he was worried about his penis being frostbitten for his wedding which would obviously not be I heard a rumour they're already getting fucked off with being back and we're gonna fuck off to somewhere else.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Wow okay well why would you come back to England in the winter is obviously they move the kids to school once already haven't they since it comes we've got the best schools in the world.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah all right and so my nom I'm going with season one episode two of Kirby enthusiasm in which Larry has his shoes stolen bowling his bolt his shoes stolen at the bowling alley and you can obviously imagine when he sees the guy who's got them he's just he's more indignant about how weird it is and it all goes down typically as you might imagine. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

That's my nom I've got a couple of mentions for Brian Lara cricket the video game. Yep played that you could play that Grand Theft Auto 4 has apparently I don't remember it but a very memed Roman phoning Nico again and again asked him to go bowling and it got really memed and then there was a sub game of bowling in it. Yeah. And also who can forget Wii Sports bowling. Yeah where you could that was all the rage for a little while wasn't it you can do it with the controller and it would do it decent.

SPEAKER_04

I I loved the Wii golf. Did you ever play the Wii golf?

SPEAKER_05

I did but it's not on topic so Oh but it was just so well I mean it's not far from fine this week free website dailyholes.com not it's not pornographic it's nine hole when you when you have might be you know on the loo you can play golf or something is it? It's sort of like that yeah but my NOM is it's a musical one actually it's the Duckworth Lewis method. Oh Neil what's this just Neil Hannon from Divine Comedy It's great that album it's a 2009 concept album the whole thing is about cricket and cricket features bowling. It's really good that album yeah Duckworth Lewis for anyone who's not down with it is how you resolve a cricket match which has gone long enough to be considered a full game but the result's been ruined by rain. And I think there's actually a new it's DL it's Duckworth Lewis there's an S isn't there is there's a bit behind that's the Duckworth Lewis method was how this sort of algorithmic way of figuring out who who would who was better even though the rain stopped it being completed.

SPEAKER_02

It sounds imagine American going what Yeah you have to work you need you have to get a statistician to work out who's won the go.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah it's a concept album about cricket. There you go.

SPEAKER_04

Very good did you ever see a film called The Holdovers? No I wanted to Que Giamatti and another guy called Dominic Sessa who's younger lad. The Sester The Ses The Sester and it's uh around Christmas or one of those other things that they call Christmas but isn't really Christmas in America what is that Thanksgiving is something called Kwanzaa yeah and all the all the teachers have have gone all the students are gone but there's a few they get held over and the teacher needs to stay and Paul Guillermatis that that teacher who stays in this big stately kind of school and everything. I was about to say you'd be asking the questions of the person who is doing the why is he yeah why is he staying there for an all yeah and and the kids as well because they're vet there's about five or six kids that and they it's a rich school you know like one of the kids ends up being helicoptered out like getting saved he said oh my dad's gonna come and pick me up I'm just gonna call him like and then he gets a helicopter to come and pick him up and going off to like Bermuda or Caribbean or something instead but in one scene as he's getting to know this this one lad who's had to stay over and he's had various family problems and they don't really like each other but they're starting to actually enjoy each other's company at this stage where they go candlestick bowling which is not your ten pin but it's it's dinner kind of bowls in this very old traditional style kind of building where that you've got a period kind of bowling alley and everything. But yeah decent movie I I quite enjoyed that if I would I would recommend it's been on my watch list before yeah it's it's it it's a slow burner all the way through but it it's got a lot of heart about it.

SPEAKER_01

Liked on Christy do you know Chris got a norm no I've got in Men in Black 3 Agent J bowl an alien's head on the down the lane so that's a bowl and my norm will be an advert I can't really tell you from which year this is the seven up advert which basically I I can't really show it because it's a podcast and it's a particular audio one but the podcast the podcast the the basically the the photo is of a man and a woman in a bowling alley it's a seven up advert and the the there's a man staring at a woman's basically behind right so that's how it kind of looks like I'm showing the room and the the the writing says it's amazing what you can do with just two fingers and a thumb. Right. And he's staring at bottom and she replies and boy oh boy you sure can work up a thirst.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

So is that a recent advert? No this is from the seventies it looks quite retro. Back when you're you have to give this a go because if you're gonna see this and this is the seven up advert from the seventies and that's gonna be my NOM.

SPEAKER_05

So I hope you're I'm allowed it's not a film it's more of a yeah holster but we have had um remiss of me not to bring these up on the pod before but in recent times we've had a few gnoms for top five's going back the way let's catch up. Um Darren's been in touch about a few Leaf Nature the Leafmeister yeah he's got false teeth false teeth from Beyond the Stars which was around the band so he loved that also includes the YouTube video of it that was going back to our teeth episode a few weeks ago. And then Mel's been in touch a few times recently she's been loving a few of the shout outs and for the kings she's she would mention King Kong and King Creole from the Elvis movie. Yeah yeah and also thank you from this one was like really I was like yes love this Mad King George from Black Adder and if you know anything about my taste for comedy that hits the spot right up there. So that was great. So we need someone else to come in with the nomination for bowling for bowling. I think we've we've done quite an exhaustive list there to be honest but maybe there's something else.

SPEAKER_04

There's somebody must have a a a spare right this is a film.

SPEAKER_05

Right so do you remember The Simpsons was the one when we tried to review an FSA The Simpsons that we really all knew going in that we liked. Yeah. Loved. Yeah and we were like wow that didn't go well and so this film that we well well three out of twelve because Chris this is Chris's first time we put on a pedestal and we were like we can't review it because this is for me up in the conversation for my top five movies it's in my top five for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Like before we start talking about it it's in my top five. And I always think I was brilliant and then I think when it comes to watching it I think oh well will I still think it's really good and then I watch I'm like oh yeah it's still really really good.

SPEAKER_05

It's the Big Lebowski of course because it's a bowling film. It does feel like it's a real love letters bowling actually.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah in spite of the dude never actually bowls all the way it's mainly Donnie in fact we do see Walter We see Jesus bowl yeah anyway let's get into it the danger with doing something that you really love is not being able to get across all of the things that you really love about it's not as good and then when you do a comedy it's even harder because you're just trying to tell people here's what happened. It's funny right? Yeah well it it starts off with tumbleweed and a voiceover from Sam Mouslash are we allowed to give it just a little bit of context about all the influences and stuff and all that every part of this is a love it's like either a love letter to something the Cohen's loved like the Raymond Chandler novels like you know the crime sort of thing is or the long goodbye. So it's taking that concept of one of those hardboiled detective novels and dropping a stoner into it basically. But also all of the characters in it that are so beloved are really based on real people so the dude is Jeff Dowd who was a prom who was their producer for Blood Simple and you know was a an activist and hippie and stoner and then John Millius the screenwriter did Conan the Barbarian he was the inspiration for Walter Sochek one of the great cinema's great characters. You can only imagine these people in real life can't you yeah and Peter Erskine as well he was the guy who gave him the he was the one who had a collection of guns and Viet brought everything back to Vietnam so all these people that they knew in their life doesn't have anything to do with Vietnam so it's all bubbling up in this kind of weird movie that everybody in it is in quite a slightly different movie. Like it starts off a bit like a Western and it has a tumbleweed and has the they're sort of talking about him and when you eventually like get to meet him he's like fucking Well it just starts with him getting off and then he just rambles he like even says I've lost my train of thought I lost my train of thought there and he's talking about the dude sometimes there's a man sometimes there's a man that's when he loses it he's the laziest man in Los Angeles which puts him in running for being the laziest man in the world.

SPEAKER_05

He's buying some half and half which I assume is for his white Russians. Yeah he's in a dressing gown with shades and his jelly shoes which he pays for he pays for his half and half with a check.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah for 69 cents did you see the date of the check?

SPEAKER_04

Yes September 11th September 11th do you think 1991 yeah yeah this is during the Gulf War.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah that camelf in Iraq and he goes home with his it just basically his his life involved involves around bowling, drinking white Russians at home and getting stoned. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Are you employed sir? Yeah he goes home so we've this plot really kicks off where he's having a bath yeah and two guys break into his apartment he's just he's becoming a bog wad. Yeah and they throw his head down the toilet and they're roughing him up where's the money Lebowski where's the money it's down there somewhere let me have another look and they're beating him up we know your you know your wife owes money everywhere and his place is an absolute shithole like it couldn't be more a single look at my place. Yeah toilet's up man yeah does it look like you have a wife yeah yeah yeah and then he picks up the bowling ball he drops it he's like what the fuck is this he's like well obviously you're not a golf anyway.

SPEAKER_05

So it's a case of mistaken identity these two goons have come in to rough him up and the dude is not happy and he'll go and talk to about it with the city well in an act of kind of like the the two guys that have broken in in an act of like defiance because they've gone into the wrong place one of the guys just takes a piss on his rug. Yeah. Which is the absolute like catalyst for like what he what what the what the dude gets up to.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He'll go off and explain he'll go and meet with his friends Donnie and Walter at the the bowling alley and explain what's happened. Donnie is always constantly coming in halfway through the conversation and being told to shut the fuck up because he's out by Walter yeah Walter's just got a rage problem. Who yeah he's a he's a Vietnam fan Walter but he's he's got flat top hair with this chin strap with like orange beard and orange aviators.

SPEAKER_05

And he's converted to Judaism yeah but his wife for his ex-wife has been absent seven years ago like it's a long time and they just can't understand why he's so he brings the dog it's a Pomeranian I didn't bring it bowling it's not taking your go so the dude the dude is like the dude and Donnie the the their trio of friends that bowl there this is their league team this is what their whole life revolves around is this league team. They are very chill and Walter is in the absolute antithesis of that he is the fucking rage monster. Who Paul's always gone in the scene I mean the first when we first see them competitively bowl he rocks up with the dog yeah this Pomeranian that is he's looking after for his fucking long gone ex-wife yeah and as soon as he turns up he just screams at this guy Smokey who's clearly a like he's like a long haired kind of pacifist guy yeah he's over the line over the line yeah and he's like wasn't over the line market eight and and they just have this fucking like ding dong and within about 15 seconds he's pulled out of he's pulled out a revolver you know he's pulled out his pistol he's got it in Smokey's face it's like you market eight you're entering a world you're in a world you're entering a world of news screaming it in his face yeah and he's like okay and then after he's like I'm fucking reporting you to the league you know that's bullshit he's walking the dude's walking and they they go back they go back to the car and he's like he's you know he's a pacifist and he's like and he's doesn't he say he's got mental problems what besides pacifism and as they're talking the police pull up and then they just drive off and there's this water's given the idea to the dude that he should go and seek out the other Lebowski the mistaken identity pissed on your rug and he's that Rug really helped help the room really tied the room together tied the room together yeah yeah so he goes off to uh the big Lebowski who lives in a a mansion and we get to meet Philip Zemo Hoffman Philip Sie great performances performances brand his sort of obsequious servant who's gushing with praise about all the things the powerful rich Mr Lebowski's done oh he's pretty racially cool is it the little Lebowski Urban achievers. So at work anytime anyone does anything good we call them little Lebowski urban achievers.

SPEAKER_02

There's yeah exactly and there's the bit where he just repeats the line necessary means necessary means it's such a vocal stim for me all the time I hear that phrase so anyway we meet the big Lebowski who is he's like a bit like Logan Roy or something in succession. He's a serious person and the dude is anything disabled. He is in a way he's succeeded despite the loss of the use of his legs and he just berates Jeffrey Lebowski He hates him everything he stands for the Bum's lost revolution is over and as he's he's still being screamed at as he's kicked out of his office and he just says to um Philip Zonga yeah he said just take any fucking rock you want anyone you want but as he's walking out he he meets Tara Reed who is Lebowski the big Lebowski's a trophy wife if she's out there she offers him a thousand dollars to talk his firstly like very noticeably putting green nail polish on her toes and do you want to blow on them?

SPEAKER_05

And because Philip Simon's getting a bit uncomfortable he's like sucking rock for a thousand dollars. Yeah Frank can't watch where he has to pay a hundred and he just makes that like laugh cry face so and in the pool we'll meet we'll see Peter Stormair as Uli the nihilist yeah sounds exhausting so yeah and then that's it they load up the the He's carrying well someone behind him is carrying a like a big rug which he then has put on his we don't see it but he's he put on his shitty apartment floor and then he's just listening to bowling noises. Yeah the 1987 ASMR and then he's just fucking walloped yeah and we get is that where we get the sort of dream sequence?

SPEAKER_04

Yes through the city Kenny Rogers soundtrack for this yeah absolutely superb fucking knockout yeah just dropped in to see what the condition you're gonna do.

SPEAKER_05

That's later actually that's for the second sequence that's when he's drugged that's when he's drugged yeah so and this is where he he he meets Maud. Yes. Is she painting in this one or is it just come from the sky no she's on a trapeze we hear some sort of chanting and maybe some orgasmic noises made or something and he's like what the fuck's going on? Yeah and she just flies over the top of him on a harness and two guys just like flinging her along while she's throwing work on a canvas.

SPEAKER_02

My work has been commended as being strongly vaginal and he's like sex Mr Lebowski it's Julianne Moore being really hot I think as a sort of feminist stuck up posh pretentious artist pretentious artist type. She's there because she thinks that it's all a scam as as Lebowski himself has actually already said he's posited it as maybe a possibility which Walter's taken to be gospel.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. He says she well maybe she called you know she'd pick herself bitch. That fucking horror And he's like that is it like to him that's so and this she's saying well and Yeah because the trophy she didn't tell us at this point but she says later in the film that actually the old man's got no money. Yeah. And so it's all posturing from him.

SPEAKER_02

Yes exactly well she he'll she'll show in log jamming saying this way fixes the cable?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah don't be fatuous Jeffrey.

SPEAKER_02

I have a problem with Donakabo she's saying that this Bunny Lebowski's tied up with Jackie Treehorn and the whole pornography ring gives money to produce porn pr this pawn producer and actually it's the money's been embezzled from the little Lebowski urban achievers.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah the million but put part of all this and so the dude gets called back to Big Lebowski delivered a microphone kidnappers Yeah he goes with Walter he like he's got to go alone but Walter's like right I'm coming so he he picks him up and he's and he just like hoofs him into the passenger seat he's like take the ringer dude take the ringer and he's got obviously he looks like a gun in just like package all wrapped up and the guy's ring and he says we're coming he's like what do you mean? He's sworn to the the basket will only be his hands dude he asked me to repeat that her life is in your hands yeah so he starts to get a bit paranoid like fucking this is actually important. Basically everything that could go wrong on this drop off does and obviously because Walter is just a fucking psycho he's an agent of chaos he just throws the the ringer is a like a briefcase full of his dirty underwear which he throws over there as he's driving along he says oh what's the plan here and he's like well that's the simple part dude like we just beat the shit out of someone I beat it I beat it out of him the plan gets too complicated too many things can go wrong and Linda say it does all go wrong and then the dude is like fuck she's gonna be killed because of us yeah but they go bowling and the phone is just constantly ringing and and he says to Walter like you know he's like really freaking out and then Walter's just like completely casual he's like what is that is the problem here yeah life was going to kill that girl they're gonna kill that poor woman yeah it's like you said yourself she fucking kidnapped herself yeah I have to say maybe maybe shout out for the bowling alley looks amazing yeah all the chrome on all the stuff the orange the wet everybody's got fucking great Donnie's shirts looked fucking crisp yeah whoa I'm throwing rocks tonight yeah and I'm pretty sure this is the first time we meet Don Turturro Jesus Quintana he This is the first time where they're kind of just sitting and he just Oh fucking red man with the Gypsy King's playing when he when when he bowls first then he comes over because you get the slow the slow mo of it delicious. He tongues the ball. Yes, yeah. It's licks the ball. The famous Gypsy King song, but it's in Spanish. Yeah. While Jesus is bowling and he's him like pull his socks up and he's in an all-in-one purple. And he does and he looks so he looks like so glamorous for someone who's you know doing bowling and then they're like, he's a fucking pedo. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It tells the story how he had to go house to house.

SPEAKER_05

And he comes over and he gives them a load of fucking shit.

SPEAKER_02

And then But when they leave as well now, so with the phone still ringing, they go out, and the car, of course, they've still got the briefing. As a subproduct, have just battered his car keeps getting. Yeah. And they still think they've got the million dollars and they haven't done the handoff properly. And when they go out, the fucking car's been stolen.

SPEAKER_05

Well, you did park it in the disabled bag.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's the end of a really bad night for the dude who goes on with the phone back home.

SPEAKER_01

And he calls the police. The police comes and they're taking a statement and my business papers.

SPEAKER_02

I've got to go.

SPEAKER_03

I'm not employed.

SPEAKER_05

Is there anything else in there? Or a tape deck and um some credence? I wouldn't hold. I say this all the time.

SPEAKER_01

I wouldn't hold up my credence. I always say it as well, yeah. Yeah, yeah. He says something, though there was there something else about the rug, yeah. Because he's like, oh, this is something. Oh and they stole my rug. It's not my rug, and then someone calls that I got the rug. He said we can close the book on that. Don't worry about that one.

SPEAKER_02

So this is where we go back off to see Maud again, we find out about Log Jamin. Sometimes she's not there.

SPEAKER_05

No. It's David Thuleis being mega gay. Really weird. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And they're getting his horrible laugh as they're speaking Japanese on the phone.

SPEAKER_05

He's kind of homophobic to him. He says, Are you a friend with a cleft asshole? He says to him. And then she does turn up, and this is when she explains the whole thing about that he's got no money, it's all like posturing, it's bullshit. He's the one who's fucking And he says that bang on the head, you need to see my doctor. He's a good man and thorough. Yeah, she's just like. And she says it about four or five times, and it's like, what the fuck are you talking about?

SPEAKER_02

So he goes off after this, he's finally learnt a bit of information now about it, but he's bundled straight out of that and into another limousine to talk to the big Lebowski who's like, Oh, actually, you really fucked this up and you where's the money? And also and he's kind of go, No, she don't worry, she owes money all round town in the parlance of our time. And then the Lebowski shows him, No, here's a fucking toe. Yeah. And it's on you. So uh. Yeah, it's getting serious. And it's the green green polish that we've seen.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So the dude is shocked by this and tells Walter, who is a plus really. You want a toe? I can get you a toe.

SPEAKER_05

I can toe by this, I'll get you to this this afternoon.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. But he's screaming. In another scene that devolves into him talking about Vietnam.

SPEAKER_05

He screams and the the waitress comes over and says, Sir, can you please keep it down? And he's like, the what is it?

SPEAKER_03

The Supreme Court has already rejected prior restraint. Yeah. I did not watch my buddies die facing.

SPEAKER_05

I've had enough of this shit. He leaves and he's like, I'm staying.

SPEAKER_04

I'm fucking staying. Doesn't Donnie die around this point? He's right at the end of the movie, actually.

SPEAKER_05

Because there is so the people that they think might be doing the ransom note is this group called Autobahn. Yeah, which is Peter Stormar, he recognises him. And Flea and some other guy that I didn't recognise.

SPEAKER_04

And then we see the Peter Stormar who I saw in the pool last time I was there. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I I sometimes when I watch it, I get confused about whether the plot actually works.

SPEAKER_02

Well it does, so it just doesn't need him. I mean, it doesn't it just all resolves itself.

SPEAKER_05

He doesn't do anything, he's not active in it, really. Eventually, after I think it's after he's been told by GDM.

SPEAKER_02

Which is really a ferret. No funny business. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it's a ferret.

SPEAKER_02

There's not a marmot. Yeah. He says nice marmot, but it's a ferret. Yeah. And this is and then so this is when he tells you know this the problems are stacking up, and again he tells Walter, say what what you want about the Nazis, at least they had a ethos. Which is in some ways a sort of summing up of the movie because everybody in it is believing something different, and everybody's kind of equally wrong, according to the Cohen's anyway. Yeah, so they get a uh call from the police, they've recovered Lebowski's car, and this is in a stroke of good fortune, although it has been used by as a toilet by a passing vagrant. He finds the homework of Larry Sellers.

SPEAKER_05

But the briefcase is not there.

SPEAKER_02

The briefcase isn't there for the homework of Larry Sellers.

SPEAKER_05

But yeah, he's just he's like fiddling around and he finds this kid's homework. Yeah. The camera goes into all the like red like directions on it, like use a dictionary. Yeah, see me afterwards or whatever. So yeah, him and Walter go to see this kid.

SPEAKER_02

Walter's trying to pass himself off as a policeman, basically. He's dressed up in a suit with a briefcase. Well he does say homework.

SPEAKER_05

We didn't mean to, we didn't mean to give the impression that we were law enforcement. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

But he says, Also he recognises the right the writer of a TV card.

SPEAKER_03

And a good day to you, sir.

SPEAKER_02

He was in an iron lung.

SPEAKER_03

It is fucking robber iron lung.

SPEAKER_05

Because he drops the knowledge that, like, oh, this guy he did 153 episodes of Branded and like.

SPEAKER_02

Not exactly a lightweight, but his kids are fucking duds.

SPEAKER_01

The kid is mental the homework. The kid who just stares at him just sits there and just does nothing.

SPEAKER_02

So little Larry comes out, yeah, and they sort of hold it up. Is this your homework, Larry?

SPEAKER_05

Well, they they just they automatically like concluded that he's got the million. Yeah. And then they see this Ferrari or something. I don't know what kind of thing. It's a Corvette. It's a quite corvette. Well, you know, even if he's bought that, he's still got 950 grand left, you know. And so they go in, this guy's like fucking completely.

SPEAKER_02

He doesn't say anything, but Walter, he doesn't say anything, he's a you stonewalling print. He gives him about three seconds, and then he completely flips his shit, goes outside, grabs a crowbar from the back.

SPEAKER_03

This is what happens when you fuck a stranger. A stranger in the Alps just smashes the car fifty times. He keeps saying that. Yeah. Just keep saying that.

SPEAKER_02

He just smashes the shit out of the street. The trivia about the replacement for that on an airline. No. This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps.

SPEAKER_05

That's what they dubbed it on the airline. So they are like battering this car. He's done the headlights, the you know, every window and it's smashed in, like, everything's completely fine. And then you just hear some other guy go, My car, my car, what it's like. Some guy down the road depart his car there. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So he comes out and beats the shit out again out of the dude's car. Yeah. Which is already taken a hell of a beating. And then the cut to them driving home having the in-and-out burger, which was another source of a joke. Donnie just talking about that. So next, does he get battered again by Jackie Treehorn's thugs?

SPEAKER_05

He gets taken to but he's also being followed by a guy in a VW Beetle. Yeah. Which doesn't resolve. That happens a bit later, doesn't it? Well, it's happened a few times because he goes, it happens when he's in the his car into the limo. Yes, but it's there. It's sort of like you're like, I wonder what that is all about. And it doesn't resolve itself till a little bit later. He's representing the Canute Suns.

SPEAKER_00

Just another party.

SPEAKER_02

Well that's what that's the family where Bunny's coming out. Bunny's, yeah. I know, but oh, it's just and he's like, Oh, I you're amazing. I'm I'm one of you. I'm a dick like you. Like you're so good playing both sides against the middle and all that.

SPEAKER_05

I think he just goes home. He goes home and he's just there asleep or lying on the floor again drinking, and Maude appears in his dressing gown. Yeah. Jag him so they have sex. And she just he still hasn't twigged what all this he's a good doctor and thorough is all about. Well you wouldn't really, because he's fucking out of left field. Yeah. And then she drops the dressing gown and he's like, okay, and they fuck, and then you just see them like smoking to Jay afterwards. Yeah. He goes off to the bar. He goes off to make another drink and make another white Russian, and she's like leaning on her back, you know, like with her legs up there. He said, What the fuck are you doing? She's like, it increases the chances of consumption. He's like, everyone, it's like, no, listen, you know, I was looking for someone I wanted to have a kid, but I don't want it to be anyone I would see socially or you know, happen to cross paths with in any kind of like, you know, way, shape, or forms that I move in. So, you know, that's where you fit the bill.

SPEAKER_02

So he's like, okay. Yeah. And we do get a quick digression as well to Jackie Treehorn. We go to his place where the dude again is trying to sort of It's one of my favourite lines of the movie coming up.

SPEAKER_05

You make a hell of a caucasian. No, with a police officer. Oh. So he goes to see Jackie Treehorn. At first, we get a slow-mo of that lady being thrown in the air. Like trampolineed up in the air with her boobs, and she's having a great sort of like a Playboy Mansion kind of vibe, isn't it? He's supposed to be like your your Hugh Cass. And he doesn't want him sniffing around, so he drugs him up.

SPEAKER_02

Part way through their meeting, he likes to go off to do he takes a phone call and he's scribbling something down, and Lebowski's being like a private detective. As he goes out of the room, he he scribbles it down. He's just sort of guy with the heart on, yeah. So anyway, he goes out of that party. This is where he has the hallucination of the drugged by tree horn and beaten up and told to fuck off, basically, digging around his shit you shouldn't be involved in. Yeah. And then we get the see what condition my condition was in. You're like Buddy Berkeley kind of dance. Yeah, exactly. It's brilliant. And then when he comes to, he's with the he goes to see the police chief, doesn't he? He treats objects like women, man.

SPEAKER_03

That's my favourite so good. He just throws a cup off his forehead. I don't like your deadbeat hair, I don't like your dead big face, and I don't like you.

SPEAKER_05

Deadbeat. Oh no, Jerkov, Jerkov. I don't like your jerkov hair. Yeah, and he just throws his mug at him and it pings off his face and he's on the floor, and then he's like, get out of my fucking beach town, Lebowski. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So it's about after this that he just sort of head it works out that it's all bullshit, basically.

SPEAKER_05

He has pieced it all together now. Yeah. It's all been bollocks, like everyone's bullshitting each other.

SPEAKER_02

Everyone's bullshitting each other. The old man was the actual big Lebowski was on the fiddle as well, so they go off to confront him and when they turn up there in the car, Bunny's car is already like stacked up against the stuff. She's smashed it into the one of the running around. Yeah. Like, oh, we found her. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

With all her toes.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. With all her toes.

SPEAKER_04

Absolutely. Walter was right. You can just pick up a toe anywhere.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Well, we have seen them in the diner, the autobahn crew and the the woman from all too. She's she's got her like cowboy boom cut off and they're missing a toe whilst they're ordering food, and they're gonna come demanding something in return.

SPEAKER_01

That's when Dani though.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So there's Well, we've got we also just Walter accuses the big Globowski of being a faker spinals. Yeah, this this fucker walks. Yeah. And we just leave him there on the floor. I think that's pretty much the last we see of it, isn't it? Just fucking Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And they're outside the bowling alley in the Autobahn crew waiting for them. And as if there's a fight, they they they've got a massive sword, like a katana sword. Yeah. It's like, and they're like, we want the fucking money, Lebowski. And they just Walter's like, these men are cowards. They've got they've just got the wrong end of the stick, and obviously you've got like the dude and Donnie are gonna be fucking no no use at all.

SPEAKER_01

But they're trying to get the money out. It's like I've got four dollars, I've got sixteen dollars.

SPEAKER_05

Take the four dollars, take the but Walter just fucking throws his bowling ball in his bag straight into Flea's.

SPEAKER_02

The nihilist goes, Oh, it's not fair, and he's like, You're fucking nihilists.

SPEAKER_05

But like Flea takes the bowling ball like straight in the groin and it's completely KO'd. And then Walter bites the ear off Peter Storm, I think, and then the other guy's just as some flimsy blanky dude who's even the dude's just like keeping at bay. Yeah. And then they sort of they run off and they look round, and Donnie's he's been shot, and he's like, No, he's having a hard attack. Walter says we got help choppering in.

SPEAKER_02

He does unfortunately that's the end we'll see of Donnie, who was never really at the front of any conversations throughout the movie and always being told to shut the fuck up. So they're off to the mortuary. Cut to the yeah, the crematorium.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, the yeah, the guy with the recipient receptacle. Really fucking receptacle.

SPEAKER_05

And he's like, What like Walter's like, what's this? It's our most modestly priced receptacle. It's $150, I think, for some sort of shitty little we're we're scaring the ashes, like, yeah, but you still need to fucking take out here. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So they cut to the and they got him in a coffee container. It's fucking horrendous. And they take him down to the beaches, Donny Kabatsos or whatever his name was, and they start to do a eulogy for him on the cliffs. He was a surfer, but unfortunately From thing it to Pismo Beach, and then he just morphs into like it becomes a story about Vietnam, the good men who gave their lives.

SPEAKER_05

It's in the dudes like straight away, it's like fucking. It doesn't really matter much, but he just is like, here we go. And then when he scatters the ashes, it just gets blown like all the time. Even my business laughter this bit. Like he just his sunglasses. The wind's going the wrong way, ashes over him, and then he's like, But the fuck was that stuff about Vietnam? It's like, well, there wasn't, you know, it wasn't like a literal thing. It's like wasn't any fucking like there wasn't any connection at all.

SPEAKER_02

And then it's a good piece of acting, actually, because he just looks like a child for a minute, John, and he's like his shoulders all slump and he just needs a hug from his friend because he's got serious mental issues, basically. And this is kind of the end of the movie. We just drift back to the bowling alley where the dude will abide after being Sam. I was saying Sam Elliott.

SPEAKER_05

Sam Elliott, yeah. The Western guy. He's had a couple of combos with him, hasn't he? And he's been the sort of voice over guy.

SPEAKER_04

He he's almost like he he sees everything. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There seems to be some element of that. Yeah. Yeah. That he's he's and he kind of signs off with saying about, oh, it's just kind of good to know that he's out there, the dude, just to buy the.

SPEAKER_05

And there's gonna be a little Lebowski knocking about at some point. Yeah, yeah. And we off we go.

SPEAKER_04

And that's just some great songs play us out. And you know, it's been such a a cult following now for like twenty years afterwards they established the the the kind of big Lebowski festival. Yeah. Lebowski festival.

SPEAKER_05

People go as the Iron Lun, like to fucking amazing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. And as people have got the big kind of cardigans the dude wears. Do you see him?

SPEAKER_05

Jesus is even there when John Goodman got his star on the Hall of Fame, and or it's yeah, it must have been that way around, and Jeff Bridges turned up in the Lebowski like outfit to like do a speech for him. Fucking brilliant.

SPEAKER_02

A lot of those were his own clothes. There's something that is that really appeals about it because it is really sincere as well as being really funny as well.

SPEAKER_05

Jeff Bridges even acting. Yeah. I imagine you imagine him like in his twenties and thirties. That's must like just a picture of him just being a snob.

SPEAKER_04

But they held on to this for quite a long time, didn't they? Because they'd written it and then they'd done, I think, Fargo before this. Um they'd done Blood Simple, and that was I think the first one, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_05

Maybe it has like a proxy that was before this. Yeah. What's the one with John Tatura where he's got writer's book? But they had they had I think.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, but I'm thinking they so they'd had this waiting. But I think it's an important one because John Goodman's in that as a fucking like well, the devil basically. But timing then obviously prevailed for all these characters to come together, and I think they'd even put in, you know, Jack Nicholson and for the big Lebowski and and different characters, but you know, looking at it now, you can't exactly it is it is impossible to imagine anybody else other than those people within the and the yeah, the jelly shoes was his own, weren't they? They were and it made it made me think I want to get a pair of them. Yeah, it's still a a Stonewall classic. Endlessly quotable and just something about it really. And and you know, you can re-watch and rewatch, it's it's one of those like whimnell and I cult kind of classic that a lot of people watch over and over again and quote a lot of people.

SPEAKER_05

We know that we liked it, but I'm interested to see what Chris did.

SPEAKER_01

What did Chris think? I'm a bit conflicted, I'm not gonna lie. It's I didn't really understand it. I don't really understand the purpose of it. No, I didn't really think it was that funny because it's the first time I watched it. So I don't understand it's it's in a way similar, probably to not as bad, but not as good as people might think, in my opinion, is like Napoleon Dynamite, where it's got such a cold following. Everybody quotes all these things and all these quotes, but for me in 2026, with my Romanian brain, not all of them are funny. The best thing in the whole film is John Turtro. Yeah, best thing. There's there's nothing better than him.

SPEAKER_04

They actually made a honestly.

SPEAKER_05

There's a spin-off, there's a spin off of him.

SPEAKER_04

Just that, and he only had like three minutes probably in the entire film.

SPEAKER_01

The best thing, like as soon as he comes in, I just laugh and I I don't even you don't even know when he comes back, I'll put a pistol in your ass and screams and you put your pizza on the lid, and then he goes, Wow, just a big shout out Liam, we're gonna fuck you up.

SPEAKER_03

Liam's some fucking loser.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just some slug next to it. So honestly, that is the by far the best thing of the whole film. The the whole idea is I didn't really understand any references with with what you said about the Cohen brothers and what they loved and all that. So so for me, that's not that's i I I it went past my head, all the references and all that. I really don't understand what this is. Is this a comedy? Because if it is, I don't think it's that funny for me. Is it is it a cop like a detective? No, because it's too silly. Is it a family thing because you know not really, because they swear a lot. But there's not any stabbings or any real violence or anything to to put off kids or whatever. I I don't really know what the genre is. It's not comedy noir.

SPEAKER_02

I think that's part of what makes it great. I I agree that that's all in there.

SPEAKER_01

So if you would put this as a as a film, it's like comedy, but again, I if if I'm gonna be honest, what we did in the midweek, that was funny. King that was that was a comedy, right?

SPEAKER_05

That's just out and out.

SPEAKER_01

That was for me a comedy. This is a more complicated this is they they it's much more characteristic.

SPEAKER_05

They're sort of sending up but also paying homage to the detective thing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I think that's a good thing. But I don't think you need to really know that because at the part it's also just a stoner comedy about a guy wandering into this stupid, silly, farcical conspiracy, really, as well.

SPEAKER_01

Again, I I wouldn't say I wouldn't say it's it's by any means. I never put my phone up or I went, I never I I kind of stuck stuck to it, and I I this also is really tricky because I I I watched it on the naughty box and I didn't have subtitles. Some of it kind of gets lost a little bit when I don't have the subtitles because there's the accents, there's the German guys, there's all this, so I don't really there's a couple of things that I really didn't really connect and I didn't really make sense. And also the the thing with the shut up Donnie, honestly, after the first scene, I was just like, that's I've had enough of this. I couldn't I I was just like, this is not funny anymore. What's the point? I I get it already.

SPEAKER_05

Also with the with the cones, they they they have their people that they like, yeah. And you just see them in film after film after film. And uh, even though the the the private detective guy in the in the Beatle, he was in the hotzaka proxy, he's waiting for his his his like contract to be done, it gets shot out the window. This came out in 1998, so I would have been 20, and I had done Media Studies for A-Levels at college. Okay. But I saw this at the cinema, and this is when I was starting to so I had seen like you know, new cubic stuff because we'd done it at school and we'd done Citizen Kane. But this is like the first time I'd seen Julianne Moore, first time I'd seen Philip Seymour Hoffman. It's the first time I was like seeing all these other people and getting aware of of films that could be brilliant, but also you know, weren't like spielbirth, you know what I mean? It was just like other things that are out there that if you just like looked a bit, you could find all these other things. And I don't I don't know if it was the first Cohen Brothers film that I'd seen. I don't think it was the first one. I'd seen Fargo, actually, I'd say I definitely would have seen Fargo for this. But it was like fucking hell, there's like a whole world of other shit out there that's not like blockbuster stuff that's really fucking hilariously funny. I just thought this this is like for me, it's in my top five. I just think it's so funny. John Goodman is like it's a performance for the ages. It really is. I don't think there's a like, well, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

And they're quite controlling, which so there's only one ab-lib line in the entire movie, the human paracat one. Right. So there's everything else is like rehearsed and you know. Yeah, which is it doesn't feel like that. It has a naturalistic quality when you're watching it, even though the characters are very uh Well they write it, don't they?

SPEAKER_04

And they want it performed in a particular way. But for me, the the characters that they've written in here, I can understand why they want that because and they've chosen actors to deliver those kind of lines. So the dude, like he's he's up there as is like one of the great cult characters, of course, but it's the sub characters Philip Seymour Hoffman's Brunt, you know, as far as I see you know where he goes to seclusion in the West Wing and he puts his arm up like that.

SPEAKER_02

I do that all the time when I show people around.

SPEAKER_05

Or or the big Lebowski's like strong men also cry and it comes amazing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, just the the the the the lines and the way they've been delivered and the and the characters they do, they make they make me delivering like something really hard.

SPEAKER_05

Felt about his wife, and he's like, Mind if I do it, Jay?

SPEAKER_03

Brilliant.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the timing of of like the just the different emotions that one actor's feeling or one character's feeling, and then the other one just doesn't give a shit, it's just on a totally different bike.

SPEAKER_02

It's like a star patch, exactly, in every single scene, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And yeah, they they've you know it wasn't a huge hit at the box office, but I think it once it got out there, it slowly started picking up this kind of cult following and it really is one of my favourites. Yeah, it it's i it's still gonna be a film that I will watch and recommend for as long as I watch movies, I think. Yeah, it's it's yeah, an absolute classic for me.

SPEAKER_03

Bowling recommend? Sure.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's a strike. This is the strongest recommend I possibly can recommend. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I think we enjoyed. Chris is a little bit on the fence with the second one, but enjoyed at least. Oh no, it was good.

SPEAKER_01

I told you it was good. I I can't I can't.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, that was.

SPEAKER_01

But but look, the thing is w it's it's the same like anything else. We we have a saying back home where where you you you don't go Sucky Pris. No, no, we don't say that. You you go you don't go to the full tree with a f with an empty bag, which means if everyone recommends so highly, especially a film that's been 30 years ago, you might be disappointed. You y because everybody already loves it so much. You think, oh, this is gonna be unbelievable. A bit overhyped. And and it's it's not overhyped because you clearly love it. It's more that I and also I didn't see it with the eyes of your 20-year-old or 18-year-old. Yeah. And then and then it keeps it keeps going through. Because the the quotes with it's quite a racist film as well, if you think about it. The quotes for the camel jockeys and the Nazis and blah blah blah blah. The Chinaman is not the issue because.

SPEAKER_04

I don't want to end there all that.

SPEAKER_01

So so again, that's I don't mind this in the Nazis, to be honest. Which is yeah, sorry, I didn't mean that in racism towards but you know what I mean though, that there's there's quite a few things like that. It's not I wouldn't call it the top five for me, but it was it was funny. And I I enjoyed it.

SPEAKER_05

So Do you want norms for next week? Yes, um. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Have you? Yeah. I do.

SPEAKER_05

I like it.

SPEAKER_04

I like it when we do not. I think I told you about them last week. Within the next week. We're gonna go midweeker, yeah. Seven.

SPEAKER_05

Seven. Yeah, alright, yeah, yeah. Main is gonna be Mickey 17. Yeah. And it's top five sevens. Numbers top five sevens. So good luck with that. So yeah, good luck with seven. All that remains is to say side of signing up.

SPEAKER_02

Reeds has left the building.

SPEAKER_04

Lara Badere. Dan's gone. He will be sevens. Back on, back on the
