Midweek Mention... Se7en

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan, Reegs and Cris kick off Seven Week with Se7en, David Fincher's 1995 serial-killer thriller starring Morgan Freeman as the retiring Detective Somerset, Brad Pitt as the brash new partner Mills, Gwyneth Paltrow as Mills's wife Tracy, and Kevin Spacey as the killer John Doe.

The dads begin with Fincher's comeback after the Alien 3 experience, writer Andrew Kevin Walker's love letter to a New York that is never named, and Dan's warning that this is a film you need to watch in a dark room at night, which Reegs disputes after buying the ultra-high-definition version on Prime. They go through Somerset's meticulous routine and his seven days to retirement, then through the murders themselves: the gluttony victim forced to eat until he burst, the lawyer made to cut out a pound of his own flesh, the emaciated sloth victim tied to a bed for a year to the day, the lust victim and the blade, and the model who chooses sleeping pills over the phone.

Along the way they enjoy the dinner at the Mills house, the apartment that shakes every time a train goes by, the library watch list that leads them to John Doe, the foot chase that gave Brad Pitt his broken hand, and the Nine Inch Nails opening credits that every music video then spent years trying to copy.

Then comes the ending. The dads talk through Doe handing himself in, the deal with his lawyer, the drive into the desert, the delivery van arriving at 7:01 and what is in the box. They argue about why it still hits so hard, why Brad Pitt's reaction is one of the best moments of his career, and why Cris finds it such a conflicting feeling to cheer for a man who ends up fulfilling the killer's plan.

The verdict is a full-strength recommend: a bleak, grimy, brilliantly built thriller that Sidey rates ten out of ten, and fittingly, seven out of seven.

SPEAKER_02

It's the start of seven week. It is. I haven't got my seven notes out yet. And we're starting Seven Week with the movie S E number seven. It's a seven. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's a seven. It doesn't actually work though, does it? No. Really. But it does because everybody reads it as seven.

SPEAKER_02

But it shouldn't work. Director David Fincher's glorious return after the horrible Alien Three experience when he said I'd rather die of colon cancer than make another movie was his quote. Well he's he's come back strong.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Because this is, I'm gonna say, universally sort of annoyed as being half decent. Yeah. I'm more than half decent.

SPEAKER_01

The only thing and I said to you just off air, it's very dark, and I I mean in all senses of the word, but atmosphere but on the screen. You need to watch it in a dark room at night.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, but it's still well lit. I was gonna point this out because you're right, it is a dark film, but it's still a dark film in which you can see the things that are happening during the only only if you're watching in a dark room with it, because if there's any lights I I was watching the ultra high definition version on Fry. It was $3.99 to buy it, and it was $349 to rent it, so I bought it. She rented it, I won't you bought it. So what? Now you have it forever. Yeah. Well, until the licensing deal and Amazon go now, you can't have that anymore. Right. Bring back physical media. Yeah. I'm assuming we've all seen this before, right? Uh a trillion times. Yes, I have, yeah. The writer Andrew Kevin Walker, who I assume is a real sick fuck, he calls this his love letter to New York, even though the city is never named in it Metro, I think they call it once. Oh, today I could never really notice that.

SPEAKER_00

So there's a there's an old cop, Somerset. Yep. And new guy on the scene has apparently requested this transfer to come to this ultra grimy.

SPEAKER_02

Well, first of all, we see the meticulous Somerset, don't we? He gets up and he puts his like suit on, and he's got a thick knife at the side, everything's neatly lined up and he sleeps to a ticking metronome. Yeah. And he goes to a crime scene, this is before he meets Mills, and it's he's already in trouble for asking questions because he's like, Oh, well, there's a kid here, because a woman has killed her husband, it's there's blood everywhere, it's dingy, dark, horrible. And he's like, Well, where's the kid? Because there's drawings that he's seen up in. The other cops are all jaded and you know, they're like, Oh god, why are you asking questions? This is a slam dunk. Yeah. So we've got a little insight into his character. And then afterwards, this is where he meets Mills, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so you've got the old guard and the new guy coming in. Yeah. He's sort of brash and hasn't been sort of ground down by the city yet.

SPEAKER_02

He's an idealist, yeah. And and Somerset has seven days until he's gonna retire.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And so we get we basically get straight into the first the first of seven sloth. Yes. Deadly gluttony.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're called to a crime scene. They're not even sure if it's a homicide at first, they're sort of saying, Oh, why are we here? They turn up at the crime scene again, another dingy, horrible place, cockroaches everywhere, it's and there's a a big fat guy face down in a bowl of spaghetti. Spaghetti, yeah. And there's like spaghetti everywhere, and the guy's very, very, very overweight.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But you've seen this is not my pr I've never had a problem with this, but you've seen programmes in America where they they're proper shut ins. Yeah, it's not to that level. Do you know what I mean? But he's he's a big he's a big boy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It may just be the the volume of the body.

SPEAKER_00

Do they think of possibility he's just fucking had a heart attack whilst eating? Yeah. That's not beyond the realms of possibility here.

SPEAKER_02

They're not even convinced at first that it's a homicide. The guy says he's dead, he's like, oh thank you, doctor. Yeah. They do eventually work out that when they see that there's like barbed wire around his wrists and feet, and there's a gun mark on his temple, yeah. They work out that he's basically been had to forced to eat. Forced to eat to death, and that will be confirmed by the coroner or the mortal afterwards.

SPEAKER_00

To blow up his stomach or something?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, when he couldn't eat any more. He was kicked in the stomach and he basically just burst. Grim. Jesus.

SPEAKER_03

There's also the word gluttony written on the thing, right? They don't find that in the city. They find that after the second murder. Oh right, yeah, sorry, yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They find something the the coroner also finds something in his stomach. It's the little like bits of plastic plastic, which they don't the the hell is that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Really weird detail. And that's when Somerset I think goes back to the uh place to go and find the the let the words gluttony written and grease behind the secret fridge, but like you say, days a bit later. That's after the lawyer, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

It is, yeah. So they go they go to the the police corp shop. Yeah. And does anyone recognise the captain? Yeah. It's much more quietly spoken in this film than Four Metal Jacket. Yeah. Oh, is it the same guy? Okay. The R. Ernie. Yeah. And Summerset's I'm fucking not picking this up in my last week. There's no fucking way. And to be frank, he's too raw for this as well.

SPEAKER_02

But he's his way, Somerset's thing is like of kind of checked-out apathy. He's like, I know where this is going. Yeah. This is going to rumble on and on. I don't want any part of it. And like you say, he's too inexperienced and all that stuff. So he gives it to him anyway, doesn't he? The case.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, I want it, I want it. He's like, well, he wants it. So you know someone's got to do it. You know. And this isn't I think they do talk about crimes of passion, but this isn't your usual someone's just had a row and this is this torture. This is torture. You know, s someone's been made to suffer, so this is fairly disgusting. And then they get I think they just get the call, don't they, about the lawyer. They do. He's been killed in his office. Yeah. But this time there is blood on the floor spelling out greed, isn't it? His one is it, yeah. Greed, yeah. And he's been made to cut out a pound of flesh. Yeah. Yeah. No more or less. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I think that's what sends him back to go and look for the gluttony.

SPEAKER_00

Well, he realizes then that this is the seven deadly sins.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He starts doing all of his research. There's many great scenes of like going into big libraries of classical music and doing some research. By the way, so off the chart. It sounds like nine-inch nails or something like that. It is nine-inch nails, yeah. And just like mm a complete mentalist's diary of hatred and horrible that was just aped over again.

SPEAKER_00

Specifically lifted that style, and I think maybe got David Fincher's directed video for Stupid Girl. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. You saw it a million times afterwards, people trying to copy it, but Oh yeah. So we've had the the lawyer made to cut out a pound of his own flesh, and we've got the gluttony, like you say, sent back for him.

SPEAKER_00

So they figure out he he figures out that the stuff in his that they they found during the autopsy has he sees the list of gaps on the floor and he realizes that the fridge has been moved. Yeah. And when he pulls that back and Grease has been written gluttony, and it's like, fucking hell, here we go. This is a serial killer. Yeah. As if he didn't suspect it anyway. But yeah, it's kind of confirmed it. So then they speak to the because the in the crime scene of the lawyer, there's glasses in blood been drawn on, like almost like the Joker might have done, of the uh wife on her photo on his desk, to like as if she's looking at something. And so they're like, Well, so they go and like question her as if she's in any state to like take care of it. Yeah, she's in a safe house. And they're showing her photos of the crime scene and whatever, and she's like, Oh, and then eventually she's like, hang on, that that picture on his wall is upside down. Yeah. So they have to go and investigate that and they take it off, and then I think someone says, Lee, he's even like moved the the wire, the screen's wired it so that he sits right on the wall. Yeah. Cut it open, cut look through the back, look at the wall, there's nothing there. You're like, the fuck.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's the other thing we haven't mentioned, but they haven't found a single fingerprint anywhere at any of the crime scenes so far. That's important because at this point they suddenly find loads of them.

SPEAKER_00

Mills is already getting like frustrated about it. He's like, Well, he's fucking around with us. He's just these are all just like red herrings, and Somerset dusts a few things is like in fingerprints, help me on the wall. It's like never seen anything like this. Victor Allen. Somerset's like, nope.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So that leads them to the next guy, Victor Allen, who's a known pedarast, eight-year-olds, dude. And they're drawn to this house where they find him. I think this is one of the most memorable scenes of the movie. They find this emaciated corpse that's been tied to the wheel.

SPEAKER_00

You know, the scene where they walk in and there's all the air fresh, just the trees hanging off the ceiling, like hundreds of them. And then they've well, there's a bed, right? And you can see.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's got everything there, stool samples, piss samples, everything. Not sure they're necessary, really. But not really. Just uh I mean So but this guy's been like tied to a bed as they draw they look through the photos and he's like a a year to the day he's tied to the bed and then photos of him all this time. And then they sort of look closer and closer to the corpse, one of the SWAT guys.

SPEAKER_01

And he just fucking the big jumps jumps out here. So not actually He's alive, he's alive, and they sort of get him into the hospital. He is in no condition to Ray Harryhausen like skeleton at this point.

SPEAKER_00

It's like the doctor there's like, listen, you know, if he hadn't already chewed off his own tongue, which he has, like his brain is completely. His brain's mush.

SPEAKER_02

And he's he's like, Oh, can we ask him anything? He's like, Oh, wait, that guy'd die if you shined a flashlight in his eyes. So it's like, okay, that's not gonna not gonna happen. Meanwhile, Somerset has got close with Mills, their relationship has gone from like strained, and him at the beginning, he definitely doesn't like his impetuousness, he kicks him off the crime scene at the beginning. But as they're going on, and as Mills starts to come become involved in the case and read the cliff notes of the seven deadly sins and all the books that are being referenced, he gets he goes for dinner with the Well he moves into his office, isn't he?

SPEAKER_00

And the phone rings, he's like, comes with the office, you know. So he'll have to answer it, and it's his wife, and he's like the phone over saying, I need to speak to you know the other one. He's like, Okay, it's weird. And he's like, puts the phone down, it's like, What was that? It's like I'm coming for dinner at your house tonight.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. It's a bit of a bonding moment. I like when he asks for a glass of wine and he gives him a tumbler just full of it. It's like and there's a good little gag in there. She says Gwynneth Powtro meets them at the door, she looks quite fit in this, and she's they were dating at a time, aren't they? Yeah, and she says, Oh, he was the funniest guy in high school, and he's like, he looks it and it's like, Really? A bit of m levity in a film that has basically none. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They have a big laugh about their shitty apartment because it's like on top of a subway. Everything just vibrates every ten minutes. So they've been absolutely done up a kipper by the real estate guy, which causes them to have a you know big laugh. And then it goes into like the other guys where they're having a workstation in the apartment trying to figure shit out. What's the next murder?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I'm just trying to think, do we get the this? They suddenly get a bit of a break because they're so searching the computers, aren't they?

SPEAKER_01

And someone's checked out a bunch of books about the seven days and sins.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. He well he tells them, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_02

He's like this is like kind of off the books, but you can find out there are certain books flagged in the American public library system, and if you rent them out, you go on a watch list and if you can search combinations of books so they're able to track down this guy.

SPEAKER_01

Capture in the Rye would be one, and then and then this. So they they've literally, yeah, John Doe is literally the name, and they pay him a visit.

SPEAKER_02

Before this as well, actually, there was there's a s when they turn up to the sloth house, there's a reporter who comes and takes photos of Millionaire. Don't really see who it is, although it's definitely Kevin Spacey. So and yeah, it looks a bit dodgy, and so it ties into this bit because they go they track down John Doe on this illegal tip basically that they've got from the from his. They'd never be able to use that. No, but it just gives them some intel. And they knock at the door, and then as they're knocking and waiting, some guy turns up at the end of the corridor and he does a little double take, doesn't he? And then he starts walking towards them and suddenly opens fire.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And yeah, there's there's a chase, and Doe actually gets a good chase. Yeah, yeah, he's he's got the the go on him and he can kill him, but he doesn't.

SPEAKER_02

He's like a big foot chase, like up and down through a building and through windows and through apartments and all sorts of stuff, innit? And then he doesn't he does get the drop on him, but he doesn't finish him off. And it'll give Brad Pitt the broken hand that he's had part way through this movie anyway, but it'll at least give him an on-screen reason to have it.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, right. He got actually He broke his hand, yeah, and then they had to incorporate it into the screen. Oh, they did well, and they they actually go into the the apartment then and you know, it's it's a serial killer's apartment, they really thousands of diaries of just like mental stuff. The neon cross over the bed and dark room of photos of victims and those journals from the opening credits, yeah, kind of the journals that's been filmed.

SPEAKER_02

It's got black walls in one of the rooms with like a red cross and all this scary shit. And I'm like, God, even that guy must come home one day and just like want to eat cereal and watch telly. Yeah, yeah. Oh god, do I really have to sit in my fucking sociopathic layer tonight?

SPEAKER_01

Can I just like put the football on? No, he's he's definitely the killer. And then there's two more victims. There's he rings them though, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_00

In the apartment, he phones. Yeah, there's a prostitute. Well you know, he phones them while they're in the apartment, doesn't he? Drop down. Oh right, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And they're like, oh record it, and he's just basically saying this and fuck off the thing. Taunting. Yeah. Yeah, it's a it's a big like, ha ha. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you got the flat, but you didn't get me. Yeah. Um well we we get lust and pride.

SPEAKER_00

Lost one is particularly fucking horrible. They go to is it old Wild Bill's leather emporium or something? Yeah. And he's made they didn't you don't see it at first. They're just talking about it. You fucking made this, and he goes, I've made fucking way worse stuff than that. Yeah. And then you do see it, and it's like a cock thing with a massive blade.

SPEAKER_02

It's a girdle with instead of a penis attachment, it's just got a blade, like a machete blade or a scythe or something, it's horrible.

SPEAKER_00

And the guy has been made to fuck this prostitute at gunpoint, and you see how it's affected him, he's just like completely destroyed. Yeah. And you can't but imagine what fucking state of that must have been like. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so grim. And then there's yeah, the pride one. Pride is the model. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Who who who killed herself rather than she had a phone taped to one hand, sorry, super glued to one hand, a bottle of sleeping pills to the other, he cut off her nose. So it was either phone help or kill yourself, and she killed herself.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So he took a bit of a gamble on that one, I think. Yeah, it's the weakest of all of them, innit? They rushed, they kind of rushed back.

SPEAKER_01

But he he he's obviously done his research on the victims, and he He realizes that they're so superficial she was like in the sense that she was she couldn't live with. Only about her look, there was nothing. There was no survival instinct. And and probably didn't have the confidence in like being able to fix that. That's plastic surgeries they might have now. Just have a big light corner.

SPEAKER_02

No, but you'd just be alive. I I I don't know. I don't think it might be menu, I think. Yeah. But the police are nowhere near him, really. So he's gonna have to sort that out himself.

SPEAKER_00

It's actually after the I really like the reveal because they usually see us all that outside exterior shot of the police station and then walking in.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he gets a taxi there though, and when he when you realise he's covered in blood, what was that guy doing? The taxi driver who picked him up. That's it.

SPEAKER_00

You see them walk in and then the camera kind of stays on its shot, and you see the cab pull up into the foreground of the shot and someone get out, and then they it follows them inside and they're going up the stairs, and you and you just hear this voice going, Detective, Detective, and they just ignore him, yeah. And he just shouts out, Detective, and it turns around and like you say, he's got sort of bandages on all of his fingers because he's been cutting off the ends of his fingers to stop any fingerprints. Yeah, he's got blood like fucking all over him. Yeah. So Mills just screams at him, gets him down, and he's like, Oh my god, everyone's fucking freaking out.

SPEAKER_02

And just before we head into the ending, which I think the ending is a very famous ending to this movie, one thing we have missed out, it's probably good to fill in, is that she's pregnant. Mills' wife She's had a heart to heart with someone. She's had a big heart to heart, and they've been a bit like, you know, what why would anybody bring a person into this world in this place? She hates it, obviously. She hates it, but you know, there's like a spark of hope. And he says uh he relates a story of him at one point for essentially pressuring his partner into having an abortion. He says he he never thought it was the wrong move, but he always regretted it. And then he tells he gives her quite a big bird, and he says, Oh, if you decide not to keep it, don't tell him that you were pregnant, which I think is very unfair. But she seems to take that on the chin.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So they do some well, first of all, he has to lawyer up. He's obviously got a plan. Yeah. And the lawyer says, Listen, he's says you need to take him to this place, it's got to be you two. Give you the final two boys. He's gonna give it all away. And they said, Well, and I was thinking, yes, but always says like we don't negotiate with terrorists, but we'll have we're happy to negotiate with this serial killer. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

And and we're gonna let you tell us on the drive there where we're going, not you know, beat it out of you before we go. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um so they say, Well, he's talking bollocks, and then some forensic sky's like, 'Well, he came in with a load of blood on him.' Yeah. We've identified the blood from the pride victim, but there's a second unidentified victim. It's not his, it's not, yeah. So there's definitely another body, and they're like, Okay, let's go with it. Let's just go with it for the sake of the story.

SPEAKER_01

Into the desert they go in the middle of fucking nowhere. Mills Somerset and John Doe in the back of the car and orange jumpsuit. And when they get to the middle of nowhere, and it is absolute nowhere, a delivery van shows up.

SPEAKER_02

He's not very subtle as he's talking the whole way, John Doe, because he talks about his admiration for Mills, and he's he's sort of winding him up. He tells about he's a chosen one and he has to carry this stuff out and show the world he won't like it. It's about people will barely be able to come with a sledgehammer to make them pay attention.

SPEAKER_00

And he's he's very sort of sort of Hannibal Lector esque doesn't lose it until I think it's Mills who says, you know, you can just go around killing innocent people, and when he says innocent people, then he fucking loses it. Yeah. And he's like, only in a world this fucking corrupt, only this disgusting, could you call these people and he goes on this big rut?

SPEAKER_02

That disgusting fat guy that you mocked the biggest, the whore, yeah, you know the greedy lawyer, yeah, yeah, all that kind of stuff. And then he does actually get pierced by Morgan Freeman, who's like, Oh, you know, for somebody who's been chosen, you do you really enjoy your work. Like and then he suddenly takes a little bit of that to up. But anyway, with with barreling right to the end now, oh he tells him, and there's helicopters and shit and all sorts going on.

SPEAKER_00

They're mic'd up, aren't they? And I really like the way it's done because a lot of it you see from the helicopter and you hear their conversation on the mic, and it's all building the scores like building and building.

SPEAKER_02

And you know something's going on, but you're not really a hundred percent sure the first time you're watching this.

SPEAKER_00

I was trying to remember back. I think I think as soon as I saw the van the first time, I think I twigged it. Maybe not that it was what it was, but I assumed that he'd killed.

SPEAKER_02

No, I don't think I did right up until the reveal. I don't think I'm pretty sure the first time it was, you know.

SPEAKER_01

I think I was just there for like a a good few seconds after it's gone.

SPEAKER_00

So they are they're out of the car, they're waiting, and they see the the van coming. They don't know it's a delivery van at first, they'll just see a van. At 7.01, it turns up. Somerset goes off to investigate. To stop him, pulls you know, gets the guy at gunpoint, he's like, Whoa, whoa, I'm just supposed to deliver this box.

SPEAKER_02

So at this point, John Doe's on his knees, could we could we have some time alone together? Basically, yeah. And he's you can see on his face this is all playing out exactly as he wants it to. Yeah. Somerset runs off, he looks in the box, and then he's he's does a horrible double take, like the box goes to the floor, you're like, Oh my god, what's in there? Do you get the flash? No, you never see it. You never get to see it, do you? No. And then he starts running back to Mills.

SPEAKER_00

John Doe's got the upper hand. Yeah. John Doe's got the upper hand, put down your gun. He's just saying, and then when he gets there, John Doe tells him specifically what's in there.

SPEAKER_02

He said, Oh, I took a trip earlier today before I came to the police station to the doorhouse because my sin, he's trying I'm trying to tell you something, Mills. He says, It's my sin is envy. I admire your life, I your pretty wife, your unborn child. He doesn't even know she begs for the life of her unborn child.

SPEAKER_00

And he can tell by Mills' reaction he didn't know something. Yeah, and he sort of smirks, he's even more like Yeah. This is even more playing into his plan. Yeah. And Brad Pitt is brilliant here. He's amazing. His reaction is fucking incredible. He's like from like complete grief and like despair to fucking the wrong.

SPEAKER_02

Well, sort of not understanding as well. Like a reality.

SPEAKER_00

He knows what's happened but he can't accept what's happened, like surely it hasn't. And then fuck, I'm gonna fucking kill you to like despair again, like and then And then some says don't do it. He wins if you do it. He wins if you do it. The bad guy wins. They're telling you don't do it. And you just wait in and it pauses for a few seconds, then he shoots him. You get one shot from the city. And then he stands over him and he just empties the cleaning.

SPEAKER_02

And he's put into a police car and taken away.

SPEAKER_00

He looks absolutely shell-shocked, like I would just straight up think, well, they're not gonna like get done you know, like off on a insanity, you know, surely they're not gonna process it. Temporarily insane. I know, but his wife is dead as well.

SPEAKER_02

He's got his wife's head is dumbed her shortly after anyway. So Yeah, that's true. I think that's pretty much it, isn't it? Ends there.

SPEAKER_03

I think it's the helicopter camera.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he just watched it now, go away. And it's one of those few films where the bad guy wins. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Although he dies. That's his pen, though. Well he wins.

SPEAKER_00

He wants to be memorialized in his fucking.

SPEAKER_01

He didn't want to be in prison. He wanted to have his his own.

SPEAKER_00

I guess in his head he was as guilty as all the other people who had those sins, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, for any real sort of pessimistic, bleak, nihilistic movie where everything horrible goes on and nobody wins and pht. Yeah. It's brilliant for that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But it's also it's also whoever you cheer for in this film. Even for Brad Pitt, you cheer for him and you're like, yeah, fucking right, you killed him, but it's like he won. Yeah. Although you killed him, he won. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you fucked up by killing him.

SPEAKER_03

So you just fulfilled his plan. So so you're you're not happy that he he's done it, although he deserved it and whatever. It's just such a strange feeling at the end. Especially I remember the first time I watched it.

SPEAKER_02

In many ways, the ending that you'd want to get is that he doesn't pull the trigger and the guy gets taken off and has to spend the rest of his life behind bars, but you don't get that.

SPEAKER_03

No, but that's all I mean. So so it's such a conflicting feeling at the end. I thought this was brilliant. The first time I watched it, I watched it maybe three, four times. Maybe more, I can't remember really how many times, but I watched a couple of times at least, and this is good. This is good. It's good, it's grippy, it's fairly long as well.

SPEAKER_02

Two hours, seven minutes.

SPEAKER_03

It's not it's not uh it's not a 90 minute breeze. It's a it's it still goes through. And you get time to revel in all the misery. And it does have to go through all the scenes, and it's quite bleak and quite dark and quite quite sad, really, because there's no like you said, that little joke in the flat, that's pretty much it. The rest of it is not very funny at all.

SPEAKER_02

There's nothing There's one other joke that John Doe gets to say when they turn up at the place and he's like, It's a dead dog, and he goes, That wasn't me. But yeah, there's barely anything to cling on to.

SPEAKER_00

Because the ending it is such a surprise, I suppose. I was I don't know. I I just try to think about did I I I think I thought she might have been dead, but I didn't know. But then there's other films like The Usual Suspects, where the ending is such a reveal that you can never have the same experience. But this ending I think is so grim. It's even better now. Still is so appalling, you're like, fucking that's not a good thing.

SPEAKER_01

It's nice to watch somebody else's reaction when they don't know this film and how it's it's also worth mentioning that you never see what's in the box.

SPEAKER_03

No. Yeah. Although he tells him it's his wife.

SPEAKER_00

There's a lemon head song called Six, and the chorus is Here Comes Gwyneth's Head in a Box. Okay. Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the movie before you hear that song.

SPEAKER_01

And Kevin Spacey, this was, you know, 1995's Kevin Spacey. I don't know what he'd been in before this, maybe the Gene Wilde uh film that we did for the pod with Richard Pryor, Hear No Evil, See No Evil, where he played like a comedy.

SPEAKER_00

Well, around this time he had it was after this, but he had to like American Beauty. He had it like a good, really good run.

SPEAKER_01

Was he usual suspects after this as well? I think wasn't he?

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna say ninety four is usual suspects. He's the same year as Pulp Fiction and like ninety four is the big year for all these songs. Usual suspects were before this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well he's he's yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So working with g people from Guernsey, so that's how he's going right down.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, this is still an outstanding movie as for a a thriller, Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt may be one of his strongest roles.

SPEAKER_03

I have to say though, with these four, Gwyneth Paltra included, if you think about the the cinematography of each and every one of them, they've rarely been in a in a bad film.

SPEAKER_01

Well, up until this point, I think probably right. I know that they've done a few. I mean Brad Pitt's got some stinkers.

SPEAKER_03

Brad Brad Pitt Morgan Freeman's got that red and like stuff like that, but he's brilliant in this.

SPEAKER_00

He's brilliant. The two of them work well off each other, you know, the two different viewpoints, two different stages of their career. Yeah, you know, they're they're they're really good. And and the bit where Brad Pitt loses it, I think is fucking excellent.

SPEAKER_02

Like, yeah, it still really holds up. I was so surprised. I thought maybe it would be a bit sort of edgy 90s. Brilliant. Still good. Very strong. This is a ten out of ten for me.

SPEAKER_01

They don't need to remake this one anytime soon.

SPEAKER_02

No, there's nothing. No, with a happy ending.

SPEAKER_03

When it just pops out a Thai lady voice when it's driving the bag, a tie lady voice coming onto a cake somewhere.

SPEAKER_00

In the out of the box. That would be uh I'd give a seven out of seven. Oh, very good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It's it's seventh heaven. Strong.
