Kings & Mongol
This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan, Reegs and Cris review Mongol, Sergei Bodrov’s 2007 period epic about the early life of Temüjin, the boy who would become Genghis Khan. Before that, the dads tackle a king-themed Top 5, wandering through Game of Thrones, King T’Challa, Kingpin, Martin Luther King, Stephen King, King of Kong, King Ralph, Omar Little, Elvis, Michael Jackson, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The King’s Speech, The King and I, King Green and The Man in the Iron Mask.
The main film is not quite the Genghis Khan story the dads expected. Rather than a wall-to-wall tale of conquest, pillaging and terror, Mongol plays more like an origin myth: a boy choosing his future wife, losing his father to poison, being betrayed by his own people, escaping captivity, becoming blood brothers with Jamukha, and slowly building a reputation as a fairer and more disciplined leader than the brutal men around him.
The lads talk about the film’s huge landscapes, the harshness of life on the steppe, the surprisingly central love story between Temüjin and Börte, the running “Börte license plates” gag, and the way the film frames its future conqueror as a law-bringer and unifier rather than the purely monstrous figure of popular imagination. They also discuss the episodic structure, the repeated captures and escapes, the samey battle scenes, and the final storm-soaked clash where Temüjin turns fear of thunder into a legend-building power move.
The verdict is a Bort recommend. Mongol is long, slow in places and absolutely not one to second-screen, but it is visually epic, culturally distinctive and a much more romantic, respectful and surprising Genghis Khan origin story than the dads were expecting.

Yeah, so the in-laws got our ham well, Mallon's hamster.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so I was like, well, we've already got a million pets, so I don't want to have like more basic trips to the vet, yeah, and all the money that that entails. So it lived at their house. Yeah. And then Malin cleaned it out every Thursday when she's around there. And then one of the more recent times, she discovered that it had a little tumour. So it went to the vet, blah, blah, blah. And they lay on thick about, oh yeah, you know, it's going to get bigger, it'll hurt them because it like stretches their skin out. Anyway, within about a week, this tumour is fucking enormous for us. Oh, good. So it's moved back to our house because we're probably at the end of days. Yeah. I think it's actually got a vet appointment on Friday. I'm out, so I can't go to that. But I've made sure that we were not taking it to vet. Like the inlaws have to come around and take the vet because they're fucking poor. They inflicted this on us. Yeah. But you know, we're probably looking at not very, not very long left. How long how old's your hamster? It's about a year and a half. So, you know, that's it's not surprising.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because as I was saying, off air uh a minute ago, our hamster Eddie died this week. Fast Eddie.
SPEAKER_02Gone to the big hamster wheel in the sky.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and like you were saying, Chris, yeah, they're sort of a sort of transient pet. You know, when you get them, they're only here for a couple of years or whatever. But I did grow quite fond of him, actually. We did start him out, and he was quite like he he did enjoy being handled and eating food and the kids would play with him and stuff, so they were quite nice memories.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, sad times. Yeah. Yeah. You get stick insects, they I think they last about six weeks, then they're eight weeks.
SPEAKER_04The youngest is talking about snake now. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03They can they can live quietly. They can go on for a long time.
SPEAKER_02If you get a parrot, they'll outlive you.
SPEAKER_05Okay. An actual parrot, not a parakeet or something like an actual parrot.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Dowie used, I think he still has it, but it lives not at his house called Stevie, after Stevie Gerrard. And yeah, it'll go on I think his parents have got one little you know, they're like 70, I think, 70 years, they might. I'm not sure about keeping parrots.
SPEAKER_04I don't think I would do it. I would never get a bird.
SPEAKER_02I would but after our current roster of pets go, I probably won't get any more. No. I like the birds in the garden. Like I had to watch them, yeah. To bring them down. Um no football, no walking football update this week.
SPEAKER_03No, the international break. It was yeah, exactly. It was we kept an eye on on various results, haven't we? Yeah. That that seemed to have the team. Did we beat them in the final last year? Or be in the final. Um Portuguese would be in the final. They're already out. They got first rounded by Sunbrella, they're all the Harlem Globe Trolls. The Harlem Globetrotters are walking football, so it's it's gonna be an interesting season. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I finished Barry. Okay. Okay, well done. I don't know how I feel about the last few episodes. I'm trying to remember what ever you know when we just joke about oh, everyone dies. Everyone dies.
SPEAKER_04Is there a weird dream scene on a beach and stuff?
SPEAKER_02Yes, he because Bunny Colvin from The Wire appears and he's got this sort of technique of being able to I guess he was an interrogator. Anyway, yeah, he it sort of flashes into the future where but not like a dream signal, it's like it just goes into future where he's then got a kid and he's found God. Yeah. And Kusino turns up and it it had to end. Overall, very, very strong recommend. Maybe doesn't stick the landing completely. Not perfectly, but still decent. Yeah. Uh and so I've moved on from that onto the Fargo series. Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I watched the first two series of that, I think. And there was no reason I didn't watch the third, just didn't get the time.
SPEAKER_02And then So doing that, and I also watched on Netflix becoming Led Zeppelin, the Led Zeppelin documentary. Yeah, I saw that.
SPEAKER_05I haven't seen it yet, but they're Yeah, I've seen the that it popped up on the yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's great. What my favourite bits are when they're starting out and they obviously haven't found an audience and they get books to play this the one the what's it called? It's called Middle Earth, like Lord of the Lord of the Rings thing, and they're just on this stage and it's like little kitties just fingers in the room and they're just giving it like absolutely like full volume, zero fucks. Oh, it's brilliant. They're just people are just like, oh god, I'm looking away at that. Love that. Yeah, yeah. Strong recommend for that.
SPEAKER_04If you like Les Evelyn. Which I do. Yeah, it's really good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I started watching the Unibomber. Oh, I've seen that on that video. Which has Sheryl Crow, no Russell, and a couple others, and it it goes between a kind of hunt for him, but then back into the past of Ted Kaczynski, the unibomber's time at Harvard, where he was taken into various experiments which was done through the backing of the FBI.
SPEAKER_02That's where they started the whole profiling thing, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so that that's right. They want they just wanted to try and understand what would make people tick. And he was 16 and he forged his parents' signature to allow him to get who didn't want him to get involved in it. He stick to the maths, like that's what you're good at. But he was interested in psychology and wanted Russell Crowe, who's the the the teacher there, to take him under his wing and go through all these experiments. And they really push him. And you can see now, like looking through the lens of sort of today's eyes, that you wouldn't think a kid should be subject to those kind of conversations in those. Yeah, well, I mean, I hadn't got the whole way through, but it it certainly playing against that. I then didn't get right through that. I did get through series one, episode one of The Mentalist, because it was just something that I was watching with Nellie and Jana. I don't know if you've ever seen any of that, The Mentalist. He's kind of a helping the detectives, he's a guy.
SPEAKER_02Um maybe.
SPEAKER_03He's he's kind of a guy who's tends to be a psychic, but he's not actually a psychic, he's just somebody who observes and watches very closely on what people that is what a psychic is. Yeah. Oh no, it's Simon Baker. Simon Baker. Um, and there's a guy called I think Red John, who's killed all his family, as we find out in series one episode when he's you know trying to profile him or something on TV and he takes it down. So it's a you know, there's many series of this. So we started to watch that, but mainly this week I've been in a YouTube hole over the different the different walks and treks I can do in Nepal. Oh right. Three yeah, the three and and then I've I've looked at a couple of trailers. So Tenzing is coming out, and I also saw one today called Daydrinker, which is which is a Johnny. Which is which is a Johnny Depp film coming out. So that that was a nice little teaser to a trailer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I've watched uh series on Netflix called Legends, which is Steve Coogan. Steve the VHE guy. Yeah, yeah, which which I I really enjoyed it to be fair. And it's short, that's what I like. Five or six episodes. I watched them all, limited series. Yeah, that's that that's where and it's it's it's quite good. The actors are good. Based on a true story, I believe. Yes, yeah, yeah, with with the the early gangs in the 90s and the heroin dealers and all that, and great herons, yeah, yeah, yeah. Smack. Okay. It's been known as well. So that was good, and it's actually quite interesting. It's not it's not like a violent, you can see that it's not a Hollywood production, but it's good and it's it's moves quite quickly, and it does you don't get bored, it finishes on time, they don't drag it out, so it's actually quite good. And I watched, I think I'm episode four of the Day of the Jackal. Oh, yeah, the resonating thing, which I I like it. I I don't know if there's a second season. I don't really care either.
SPEAKER_02No, but uh it force episodes in The Night of the Jackal, the evening, the evening of the Jackal, the dawn of the Jackal, yeah, the lunchtime with the jackal brunch, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Maybe I I don't know. That that's that's what it's called midnight snack. And it's it's quite good. He's he's really good in it, and as I said last week, the the Spanish lady is smokes, she's good.
SPEAKER_04Is that Jeffrey Archer? Taylor Jackal? Was it Frederick Forsyth? Yeah, it's Frederick Forsyth. Jeffrey Archer, Lord Archer. Did he die to Jeffrey?
SPEAKER_03He did die yesterday, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I was listening to his biographer on the radio today saying even as they were talking about him saying you couldn't basically say you couldn't trust a word he said. Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05And I'm gonna say that is You saw some you saw Daniel live and direct on stage. I did see Daniel live and direct and with Jersey Overseas Aid. Yeah. Is that what it's called? Yes, right. Yeah. And he was on the panel speaking, he was a speaker on stage. Panel beater. Looked really dapper and really good, gave a really good account of himself. Did you have a Cassio on that? He was, I was I told you, I was surprised that he. It's actually a good thing you didn't read from anything, and you just had to read from your like use your memory and use your words, because if you were to try to read, you wouldn't.
SPEAKER_04You should try doing some of that here. I know. Using your memory and your words.
SPEAKER_05No, it was good. It was the you know, volunteers, there's these programs that they're doing in there's one in Nepal, there's one in Kenya or in somewhere else. Malawi, up. In Malawi, there's one in Madagascar where you're gonna be heading it, you're gonna be the head concho. Right, very good. So yeah, it was it was it was a good turnout as well. So it was a few I got a few people.
SPEAKER_02You were in the same building, but I was literally in the room next door, but I was just turning into a bit of a pissing. It sounded so much more fun next door. Sure, I got right thirst on and I was like, oh fuck, I because we had quite a lot on, and I'd go, I was sort of I sort of said, Oh, I'd be I'd only be there for an hour, but you know, it's free, it's free booze.
SPEAKER_03I I went up because it was literally in the hotel, happened to be your room. Left yours.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Right turn them as much.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I saw a bucket of like booze welcoming people into your and an hour, it was like there was there was water and I didn't realise.
SPEAKER_02I thought, oh god, yeah, it's one of these things where I've been invited to it because they're we're like mutual clients, and it was this this institution's 15th year anniversary. So I went in there and I was thinking, oh god, like I don't really know them that well, so but deal with the IT guy quite a lot. And then it turns out there were I fucking knew loads of people there. Oh really? And it was really good. It was like there was a really good sort of party. The atmosphere was good, and I was like, oh man, I could write thirst on it.
SPEAKER_03I was so tempted just to do a massive swerve to mine and go into yours and just blag my way. But no, appreciate your support, Chris.
SPEAKER_04Reeves, do you catch anything? No, not really this way. We finished off the second Hunger Games movie Catching Fire. Good. So yeah, it's okay. The guy in it that plays the sort of romantic lead, is she into him or not type thing? I i I'd just seen him in some other stuff, so it was really random to you know when he pops up out of context and completely different. He was that hot though, is he? Yeah, and the thing I'd seen him in was Future Man, and that opens with him wanking. So, you know. Is that a Peter guy? Peter Mellarch, yeah. That's the guy, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh I did did I mention I went to a film premiere? No. Ah, the So last year, uh not last year, last week I did so Wednesday night was that thing at the yacht where we're just kind of getting pissed. And then on the Thursday, we got invited to uh I'm gonna say film premiere. It was in the United Club over here, which is a sort of wants to be a like snooty fucking members club. It's got a sort of terrace that looks over the Royal Square there. So all these history walks that I've been going on, they also have a YouTube channel called Hidden Homes. So it's Toby who does the the walks with Tall Tales and Harry Trower, who's from Broadway's.
SPEAKER_03Which is good, and you can watch that on YouTube.
SPEAKER_02You can watch those on YouTube, yeah. And so they've got the next one coming out. It was out this week, but we got invited to go and see see this one. So we went to the United Club, and there was a bunch of people, probably about a hundred people there. We didn't really know anyone, so we were just chatting to ourselves. And then we weirdly, like, we were just stood and they had a load of sort of candlestick holders, and they all had a like a conquer on it, or chestnut or whatever. Okay, and we're like, well, that's weird. And this little old boy came over and he says, Oh, that it keeps spiders away. So you put one by each window and it'll stop spiders coming into your gaff. And we're like, All right. Then we're chatting to him a little bit, and it turns out that the the film we were going to watch, it was his house. Okay, and it's where Lily Langtree was born and raised on a plane. Wow. And definitely I remember celebrated cock gobbler. Definitely got the vibe that this guy had no kids. So I was like, right, we should like I said, Oh, we walk past your gaff all the time because it it's St. Saviour's church. Right, okay. On the road up to there. There's a blue plaque that's like this is Lily Langtree's gaff. So the whole thing was was just about the history of the gap that they always are. Really, really interesting. And actually, there's still there was a there's a chair by a window, and she had got her engagement ring, and she scratched her name into the the window pane.
SPEAKER_04Alright.
SPEAKER_02And it's still there to this day. Like you can see her name, her not Lily Angry, but her actual name, I think she's a little breton or something like that. Something like that, yeah. And so and this guy was, you know, it was really it was just like you know, like little armay, like really like quite fun and cool to talk to and get the whole history of all the place. So that was really good. Yeah, Storm recommends for that YouTube channel, Hid Hidden Homes. Yeah, yeah. They done one up at the zoo, sort of up around there, didn't they?
SPEAKER_03It it reminded me when you were telling that story of I went for a a truck in the Himalayas years ago, and there was a a guest house called the the Jimi Hendrix guest houses because when Jimi Hendrix had walked around and everything he was said to have have stayed there, and they had the Jimi Hendrix room, which is and I remember about I don't know, seven or eight years later I went and did the same trek with Jana and walked round and stayed at the same place, and next to it they had the the Mick Jagger room.
SPEAKER_00I thought it's going a bit too far, it's going on Mick stayed.
SPEAKER_03I thought, oh, he's going too far with his story now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. All right, we're gonna talk about Kings, yeah, top five kings, and then we watched Mongol, yeah, which had various different titles anyone.
SPEAKER_03There's so many different Mongol films that we all watched the same one. Let's let's fingers crossed 2007. Yeah, that was that was the key.
SPEAKER_04What was the colon? It said something after the rise of games. The rise of kings, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um shall we get into top five kings? Yeah. Let's do it after we open a bottle of wine.
SPEAKER_05Right. Kings. Kings in in films and everything and that and stuff. Go on, Chris. Well, the first one I'm gonna start is this it's a list of kings in one single film, and it's also it's uh it's very topical because it's the highest grossing film this year, very close to one of the highest grossing films in history, Christopher Nolan's Nolan's The Odyssey. Yeah, only because I watched it and I watched it twice, once here in the cinema, once back home in IMAX. And apparently the yeah, I know. Uh apparently the poem, like the actual written version, doesn't give you a single is that the Iliad? Pardon? Is that the Iliad or just the Odyssey? The Odyssey as a as a poem. It doesn't give you the exact number of kings because some of them are mythical, some of but the main ones are Odysseus, which is the protagonist of the whole thing. There's Nestor, which is the king of Pelos, Menelaus, which is the king of Sparta, Alcinus, which is the king of Phoenicians, and Agamegnon Agamemnon, who is the former king of Messinae, who is the ruler of all Greeks, and then you've got obviously Zeus, who is the king of the gods and other kings. So there's quite a few kings in one place. The king of the gods is a pretty lofty Zeus, that is him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, my dog was used. My parents used a dog called Zeus.
SPEAKER_05So I'm gonna start with that because it's it's a long film, so you and they can't put all these kings together. And it's quite topical because it's being I'm pretty sure it's still making money still now. It's still in cinema. I think you'll make money for a long time. No, but it's it's still in cinema in all over the world now.
SPEAKER_02Total like sidebar, but you see what's not made any money. Digger.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, my wife was just telling me this is. Yeah, I've tried to sort of stay away from it because I was heard there was something about it that was better at you didn't know before going.
SPEAKER_02It has two massive pivots in it, apparently. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04The trailer does not And I saw I really wanted to steer away from that and try and get to it fresh for me.
SPEAKER_02I like the look of the trailer.
SPEAKER_04It's a bomb, yeah. Everybody's fine. Maybe 180 mil took less than 10 opening weekends. The marketing's been maybe too aloof, too oblique, perhaps. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02And I've not I saw one fairly positive write-up, everything else gave it a right thrashing. Spin Pan does it. Yeah, okay. It's only 170 mil. Most people have said it's trying to it wants to be strange love and it's an epic fail. Oh, that's the reference point. Oh, right, okay. Anyhow, let's get back onto it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, I'm also going for a collection of kings. I'm going for Game of Thrones. I mean, the whole that's the show that gave us the War of the Five Kings. I think the first king is. King's Landing, yeah. I think the first king is Robert Baratheon that we see on screen. He's spent like years shagging and drinking, and then he's gored by a boar, I think, when he goes hunting. His dead wife or something. And then you've got Richard Madden playing Rob Stark, declared King of the North, and then butchered horribly at the Red Wedding.
SPEAKER_02I saw a social media post where someone's like, I've just watched season one of Game of Thrones. I can't believe like Ned Stark dies, and I'm and they go, someone's comments, don't worry, it's some wedding scenes coming up that really can achieve. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's the same he's relentless, he has his head, he's decapitated and his pregnant wife and spriced onto a wolf or something. Yeah, it's horrible. Who else did we have? Stannis Baratheon, he had his eyes on being king, but then sort of torturing and burning your own daughter puts pay to that. Joffrey. And then, of course, Joffrey, Jack Gleason, with probably one of the most joyous deaths. The most iconic performances of a cunt, basically, that you're ever gonna see.
SPEAKER_02What class can I do?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But then just hate Joffrey, don't you? I mean he's always. You thought it couldn't get any worse, and then you met Ramsey. Well I think they tried to try to out Joffrey. He was pretty bad.
SPEAKER_04He was pretty bad, but it's just something about Joffrey, yeah. But brilliant. He w he never theology and philosophy, he's given up acting to study.
SPEAKER_01Right, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We saw Chadwick Bozeman in uh Midweeker Message from the King. Riggs, you didn't see that one, but it's a strong recommend. He also played a king, King Chichala in Black Panther. Yeah, he did, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Marvel stuff. A film I didn't really get on with, to be honest. I enjoyed it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's called Michael B. Jordan, and he's so hot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he is. But I never really I don't know, maybe just caught me at the wrong time, but never really got on with it.
SPEAKER_05He's got all those like dotty tattoos on him in that film, Michael B. Jordan. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Have you seen that interview that he's gives where the woman he's interviewing him was in his same was in his high school and she used to take the piss out of him, killing him? And he's like, Well, no, he handles it. He's advised graciously, but he's also a bit from school, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_01I remember who you are.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. She's like, Oh, but you're really fit now, is that famous. I remember when I wasn't, and you remember that too. And now you're coming over here all friendly.
SPEAKER_04He was involved, I think, in the thing with what's his name? John Davidson, the Tourette sufferer. I think he was involved in that. Right, okay, then which is a shame because they're two people I really like.
SPEAKER_03So you just thought the whole film was about understanding um he's he's called you know, he shouted out you were cunt to the Queen, and she got over it. Yeah. So of course at the awards, yeah, yeah. If if he if he says inappropriate words in any situation, did they?
SPEAKER_02I think there was a bit of I don't know, there was some noise about it, but they on stage didn't know sort of bite, you know, yeah, better than that. So yeah, Chadwick, double cane.
SPEAKER_031996. Let's take you back when Roy Munson was a former bowling prodigy, and and he was his career was was destroyed by a big um McCracken. Yeah, um you got Munsoned out here in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, you got Munson, absolutely Munsoned. Yeah, it's Kingpin, Woody Harrelson, Pod, Brandon Quaid, Bill Murray. It it made me lull so many times. This film really enjoy it. Bill Murray's promotion sticking up um his his pretending to help young orphan children with the hottest mums in the world, and when he when he kind of has success and he's just like, I'm bigger than the law, you know, it's just like I've done it. It's yeah, but Roy discovers after his arm's been broken that this kind of Amish bowling sensation is is around and he's gonna turn him into a champion. So it was the Farrelly brothers, and yeah, it really. Is just a classic kind of one for this right up my alley. Nice.
SPEAKER_05I've got someone who, funny funnily enough, is actually right behind your head on the wall there. What? The man with a dream.
SPEAKER_03The man with a dream.
SPEAKER_05Martin Luther King, Dr. King, who was known as. Who there's there's not one specific film that I have in mind because he's been in loads of biographical dramas. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh man, that one we did for the pod that was really good. Common Domingo one. Yeah. What was the name of it? That was really good. He was the script writer, basically.
SPEAKER_05I can't remember the name of that. That's good. But there is Selma, where David Oyelow starts as Dr. King and focuses on the 1965 voting ride marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. You got Boycott, 2001, you go all the way starting starring Anthony Mackey as Dr. King in the 1978 NBC miniseries featuring Paul Winnifield and Betty and Caretta. There's loads of documentaries, MLK, FBI, King in the Wilderness, all that kind of stuff. So there's quite a few, and there's quite a few actors that have portrayed either minimum guest appearances or or just flashbacks in different films about the beloved Dr. King. Nice.
SPEAKER_04I've got another listy type one, Stephen King.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I thought I was gonna say that my money was you or him to bring that one into the party.
SPEAKER_04Stevie King. You got Carrie, which I think the Heather Graham is the money. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Getting a lot of grief, apparently. Oh, is it? Well, like, it's not like the you know It's not like the Brian DeBarmer original. Well, no, it's apparently the Carrie is she's supposed to be a lot angrier and a lot she's quite glamorous in this and whatever, blah blah blah. Okay, alright, again.
SPEAKER_04What else we have the Shinings, Stanley Kubrick, obviously, the running man, Edgar Wright, and whoever did the the Arnie one. And what else have we got? Kujo, some of the lesser-known ones, Dreamcatcher, Needful Things with Ed Harrings.
SPEAKER_02So we'd have the pseudonym ones.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the running man is one of the name of his Stand By Me. The Long March. Richard Batman, yeah. Batman Turner Everdrive. Yeah. Uh The Long Walk, yeah, that's been released recently. And the Langaliers, there's one coming out of left field. So quite a number. Green Mile, no, didn't I? He's done a fucking load of super prolific, isn't it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just um, but what a mind.
SPEAKER_04I mean and in fact, it was a TV series that I watched last year of The Institute, which was a book of his, but it's sort of like Stephen King's take on the X-Men, which is quite interesting. Wow, okay.
SPEAKER_02Ones that aren't actual kings, but it the it's somehow in the title. Idiomine? Yeah, yeah. The last king of Scotland. Scotland. Frank White, remember him? We watched it for the pod. It's Christopher Walken. Ah. King of New York. The King of New York. Uh, which we like that. This one's a glaring hole in my filmography, specifically Scorsese filmography. It's Robert Robert Pump Pupkin, the King of comedy. I've not seen that. Which is a bit of a stinker by me. Other ones, Billy Mitchell, remember him from King of Kong, did that on the podcast? Oh, the King of Kong. Joe Exotic, that went fucking viral during lockdown. Yeah, Tiger Kong.
SPEAKER_03I got like a whole bunch of music ones that I'll get into afterwards. Well, I was gonna mention the King of Kong, which was the Donkey Kong record breaking champion. Steve Weeby, remember he he attempted to take the the world record from Billy Mitchell and Twin Galaxies, it was all about the high scores.
SPEAKER_04I mean the mullets, the I could still see the glitch in that videotape where he'd edited it together.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I'm asking.
SPEAKER_02And he had all his kind of Say to him, what's your what's your uh your name when you put the high score in? He's like, well, if you know if you look at me and you can't see, then you know you don't you don't understand me at all. It's like what's it? Yeah, but what is it?
SPEAKER_03USA fucking twat. Yeah, it it it was just but it was a cult a cult hit and he he actually the the guy that did the directing Seth Gordon went and did horrible bosses in the office afterwards, but yeah, it he was the he was the king until somebody challenged his high score.
SPEAKER_05Nice. I've got a film from 2018 with Michael Cain and Ray Winston called King of Thieves. Oh yeah, they're all the the old boys that come back. Yeah, it's got four balls. Based on real life 2015 Hatton Garden Safe Deposit. I watched that, I enjoyed it. It was quite good, yeah. I've seen that as well. It's that's what it's called, King of Thieves. Yeah, I like that. So that was that was actually quite good, and again, one of them that is quite a breeze, and they're quite witty and whatever. So that I'm not gonna go too much into that, but there are a few other King of Thieves names of films. There's one a Nigerian Yoruba language epic fantasy action film starring Femi Adebayo, and there's a King of Thieves in 2004, a German-Czech Ukrainian drama.
SPEAKER_04That one I've not seen.
SPEAKER_05I've not seen sorry, I've not seen any of those. I have seen the one with Michael Cain, so I'll and Ray Winston, so I'll also Paul Whitehouse, who's a strong recommend for anything he does, really.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna just do a couple of honorable mentions and then my nom, I think. So John Goodman plays Ralph Jones, he's a Las Vegas crooner. Is that where they all die? Yeah, is becomes the inherits the throne. What's it called? King Ralph.
SPEAKER_02King Ralph.
SPEAKER_04So that was all killed in a free photo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I remember when he used to when he used to rent videos, that was one of the trailers on like before loads of those. That's why I remember that one, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So there's that, there's King Kong. He's literally called King Kong, he's right there in the name. He's had a million movies made about him, and my nom, therefore, is gonna be Omar Little from The Wire. You can't you best not miss. It's from the eighth episode of the first season of the American crime drama The Wire, and it features a moment where two gangsters, who is it, Weebay and Stinkham, are sent out to hustle people, and he fucking gets the drop on them and blows Stinkham away, I think, and that sort of thing. Still never watched The Wire.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. I I don't know what if there's been some sort of get-together reunion or something, but it's been all over threads. And I saw a clip, it was McNulti, what's the actor? Dominic West. Yeah, he was being interviewed, and the fella who plays Weebate just like, yo, yo, sorry, I gotta interrupt. And they have this so honestly, genuinely so like heartwarming. Yeah, because they've probably seen each other for like reunion, and it they look at him like we either the guy looks at him and goes, You look so good. And I I've watched it back a few times, like, it's so cool. It's genuinely like a 10, like it's so good. Yeah, so so good. I've been reading hard characters, it's absolutely you do have to invest in it because it's quite hard. It's quite first few episodes, you're like, you can't really understand them, and it's dense. I think the payoff is so so good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, put me off that it was I didn't have the words on.
SPEAKER_02But that's it, you could just chuck the words on us. And like when you get Snoopy, even with the words on, it's still first.
SPEAKER_03Snoopy need the words, she's she's like But I like Dominic West, and I like a few of the actors that uh have been on it, so I will give it a when I've got time on my own.
SPEAKER_02Dominic West, when I watched it, you could tell he's doing an accent, but I at the time I had no idea that Idrew Selber was not a Yank. Like no idea. It's an incredible performance, really good. Some music ones then I promised you. Anyone a fan of Ken Crimson? So the main man from Ken Crimson's like notoriously like fucking difficult and mental. This guy called Robert Fripp, he's an incredible guitarist. He's then later on, he's played and collaborated with loads of different people. He also, I think he's married to Toya Wilcox, and they have a YouTube channel, and it's mental, like completely bonkers. So if you want to laugh, like that's quite good. And the Kingdom of the Crimson King, the first album is like a Stone Gold classic. Kings of Leon, people like them at the start, and then I think they went a bit wank, frankly. Kingsman is a movie for that. It's got Karen Egerton, Colin Girth. And Colin Gerth. Yeah. The king of rock and roll is a guy called Elvis. Yeah. Yeah. Never really connected with his music personally, but other people seem to like it. King of Pop. Remember him? Michael J. Michael. Yeah. An incredible performer. Yes. Really, really good. And then this week at work, we started up Soup Club again. I do Mondays, which means I go to work on a Sunday evening and drop off my soup. And that was good this week because I had a stack of records I had to pick up. Partly because I've been buying and just I had to leave them there. But also this week I had to pick up six albums by one band, so they all came out on the same day. That's a band called King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. No, I don't know. Australian bands, kind of like Stephen King of the music world, and that they're so fucking prolific. They do like many, many albums every year, and they span the genres from like thrash metal to like electronic to just rock and pop and all sorts of crazy shit. And they had six albums out. I think they're a little reissues, but I've got probably I don't know, like dozens of their shit now, and it's like it's taking up a lot of space. So I feel like they need to be nominated just for the like volume alone. Yeah, the quality of it. So King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Name is strong.
SPEAKER_03Amazing, yeah. I I did have King Richard down there, which was Will Smith's kind of Oscar-winning performance. We did it for the pod, didn't we? I think we did it for the pod, yeah. He played Richard Williams that it's this one he got the Oscar for.
SPEAKER_02It's this is when he punched the thingy for and then won the Oscar after that on the same night. Oh really? So he did the slap first and then he then won the Oscar the Williams.
SPEAKER_03The Williams he he kind of just let himself really down there in the Oscars. I think he's still not been welcomed back to the Oscars.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. I refused to watch anything he makes on that on. Yeah, it wasn't then on, really.
SPEAKER_03It wasn't a good return from him. He smashed it. He might have smashed it. The King's speech with Colin Gerth, Jeffrey Rush, Guy Pierce, Helena Bonham Carter, when he King George the Sixth had a stammer before addressing the world as brother abdicates to me, basically. Because he was bag in the end. And just before the World War II, he's got to find his voice, literally.
SPEAKER_02I mean, the guy's quite ballsy to say to the king, you know, he he has to stand up to him at first and to challenge him. And it's take some doing, I think, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, particularly in that time where nobody would have. And that won four Oscars, and it it gave me laugh up when they the Yanks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but it's a rare example of an actually decent Oscar winning film.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's been a crowd pleaser, yeah, but also like good performances and all the rest of it.
SPEAKER_03I thought you might have reined it in a little. Um I had Elvis down there as well. So you've just seen the movie, haven't you? There was King Carol, Creole, Carol, Caroly, and that was a Kurtz movie. Yeah, did Casablanca. But my choice will be The King and I, which is your Brenner, Debricur. Yeah, and Siam, isn't it? Yeah, that's right. Travels to Siam to teach the children of King Mongut and then is that Thailand now? Thailand, yeah, yeah. That is the one and all. Yeah, there you go. 22nd Jan, book the flight. There you go. We're all going out there next year. Oh, it's from Your Brenner won the Academy Award for Best Actor for this performance. Right. So and it's got several kind of classic songs, including Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What a voice. Thank you. Wow. Daniel. Yeah, well. I'm gonna give a shout out to uh a UFC fighter formerly known as Bobby Green, who legally changed his name to King Green. Nice, which I think is amazing. Yeah he is actually he's a really he's I I quite like him, he's really funny, and he is he's mental. He bought six of his friends, his mom, his sisters, a house, and yet he lives at everyone's house and he only owns a car. So he doesn't yeah, he doesn't own his own house, but he bought houses for everyone else in his life that that means something to him. So he he's he's he's mental. He just got knocked out, controversially knocked TKO this Saturday, but he's good. And there was a film with Chalamet that was called The King. I don't know if anyone has watched that. No, he stra stars as Prince Hall, who must reluctantly ascend the English throne as King Henry V. And it's him and Robert Pattinson who plays the antagonistic Dauphin Dauphin. And it's uh 2019 historical drama film on Netflix, directed by David Michaud, loosely inspired by William Shakespeare's Henriad plays. So if you've not watched that 2019, okay. Yeah, it's quite interesting, it's not great, but it's quite interesting, and it's it's quite dramatic, and they do have a couple of fight scenes, him and Robert Pattinson, and it's intrigue and what do you call it? Drama at the courts. Drums, if that's if that means anything. But my nom will be the man with the iron mask. Well, to be fair, I would I was gonna nom Louis XIV, the uh sun god King of France. Because he was the king of France, and there is there's been loads of interpretations of his character, and there's the death of Louis XIV, L'amour de Louis XIV, 14, whatever. There's the take taking of power by Louis XIV, and I'm gonna name the man in the iron mask. Jeremy's Iron? Yeah, Jeremy's Iron, Gabriel Byrne, and some Leo DiCaprio. Yeah. Who Henry Cavill. Was he in that? I believe he was. Massive rumour, I'm gonna have to fact check that. In the Man with the Iron Mask.
SPEAKER_03I believe he was the son.
SPEAKER_05He must have been very young. He was an early, yeah, it was an early. It could be. Look, I'm not, I'm not, but I'm it's more I'm I'm kind of nominating the film and the actual character and the mask of Louis XIV, king of France, the Sun King. Malkovich, Malkovich, there's also really, really cool because you are talking about YouTube and stuff that you're not saying Henry Campbell like to watch.
SPEAKER_02Gabriel Clarence, Malkovich, Jeopardy, Byrne, Paria, Peter Sarsgaard, Hugh Laurie. For no caveal, and this is uncredited. Maybe.
SPEAKER_05But anyway, there's a six and a half minutes documentary kind of thing on YouTube about the vision Louis XIV had for the Palace de Versailles because he made the Versailles Palace. So if anyone wants to see that, it's it's not too long and it's really good as a as a vision of how.
SPEAKER_02Everything's going really well in France at the moment. I know, it's amazing, isn't it? It's all fine, everything's fine. This is fine.
SPEAKER_05It's bread and circus and fires everywhere.
SPEAKER_02So I've done we're done, we're done. Yeah, we're all done.
SPEAKER_04So we just need one from the from the listeners.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. From the royalty out there. Yeah. Right, and I think we would just go into the main girl.
SPEAKER_04When are we gonna do that? Now.
SPEAKER_02Mongol. This was hard to find for me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, you said Apple TV. I don't have Apple TV.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I didn't want to have Apple TV and I watched it completely legitimately. Sorry, I don't know. I didn't know.
SPEAKER_03Because I just thought all you said.
SPEAKER_04Was it only on Apple TV?
SPEAKER_03But you have to pay for it on Apple, yeah? We have to subscribe to Apple. Which we all do. Yeah. Yes. And then we paid. I did. I rented. This actually was on YouTube.
SPEAKER_05Oh okay, that's not too bad.
SPEAKER_03I didn't realize it was on YouTube. It's on YouTube. Some genius put it on YouTube. Alright. Okay, so if you did want to watch it, you could on YouTube.
SPEAKER_04It is a 2007 period epic from Sergey Bodrov, who's a Russian filmmaker, and it involves German, Mongolian, Russian, and Kazakh production involved. So that's what I don't think we've ever had a Mongolian featured film on the pod before. I'm not sure. And it is the telling of the story of Genghis Khan, the early years of Genghis Khan. When he was called Temujin. When he was called Temujin, yeah. I didn't really know this. The only thing I knew about Genghis Khan from popular culture was that he went around raping and pillaging and loads and loads of horses.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, loads of horses. His guys were good with a bow and arrow and all that sort of stuff.
SPEAKER_03And the chances are a massive amount of one of his one of us has got at least a little bit of Genghis Khan genealogy in his.
SPEAKER_04I don't know if I knew until I watched this that Khan was kind of like a Carl. Tribal tribal chief or something. Yeah, it's like a leader. It's like Carl Drogo.
SPEAKER_02It's like Carl, yeah. And child brides as well. Yes. You get to select your child bride from a in an early age. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Which is not far off where the movie actually kind of specs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like uh dragged out to go and write, you're gonna go and choose your own.
SPEAKER_04It starts with him in the in the cage. You get the text actually telling you the year 11 Year of the Black Rat. Yeah. Year of the Black Rat 1172. 1192, sorry, because we can flash back.
SPEAKER_02It's a pretty like tough existence out there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Even today in Mongolia. So the only other real thing that I've watched about life in Mongolia is the the the Grand Tour with Clarkson that lot when they have to build the car and then you know go across it. And you know, you go for hundreds of miles without seeing fucking anything. Nothing.
SPEAKER_05It's just step. It's like fields. Cold.
SPEAKER_04We went to Namibia for our honeymoon, and it was when you were driving between things. Not even towns, basically, but it was like four or five hundred kilometres you wouldn't see another car for.
SPEAKER_03It's like mad, you wouldn't see anything. Don't break down. Coming from an island that's nine by five, it's those kind of distances and and that landscape, it's just unbelievable to us. I mean it's unbelievable to anybody, I I think, because it's just so vast, but those plains that just stretch out for hundreds of miles, yeah, it's it's tough to wrap your and this is the kind of landscape that Genghis is well we get a bit of everything really.
SPEAKER_04The landscapes throughout this are absolutely spectacular, and you see them in the snow and in the summer and in the all sorts of wind, in the rain, yeah, pretty much everything really.
SPEAKER_05But and after he's in the cage, under the thunder, which will become important later. I think that's when he's like, My father was taking me to get get a bride or something like that.
SPEAKER_04It flashes back 20 years, doesn't it? And he starts to we start to hear the story. Timudin, he's about nine or ten, and he's been taken by his father to find a bride.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and he's he's actually gonna be married off to another tribe together or something. And on the way, they stop off at a lesser tribe who who aren't as feared as this tribe that he's going to be connected with. But there he sees a young girl who Not just any young girl, dad.
SPEAKER_04No, not just her name was Bort.
SPEAKER_02Are there any more We're running out of Bort license plates? I should want to put it on the group, it was like no save it for the problem. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04It made me laugh every time.
SPEAKER_03It was actually borte, but I know, yeah, but still. But she actually starts speaking to him, and he's only young, but she's quite kind of confident, and she's about the same age as him, maybe a little y older, but but she she has a couple of words with him and catches his eye, and then he tells his dad and well she even tells him what I think. She tells him you I'm I'll be your wife, like you know, she's Yeah, she's she's quite confident. Yeah, there's a proper lineup there when it comes to the street. Yeah, well he says, Dad, you know, I I should I should practice, you know, and he goes, We can't practice, you know. We don't he goes, What's it matter, Dad? They're weak, you know. It doesn't matter if we insult them, you know, because dad's already mentioned this to him, you know, they're weak, we can do whatever we want. Yeah, it's it it's strength. So he ends up going a little bit further and saying, I've chosen my wife, and his dad is suddenly drinking to celebrate the the the arranged marriage between and said, We'll pick you up in a five years' time or whatever it is. But that's it, they've made a pact, and he his dad realizes that by making a pact with this weaker tribe, he's he's insulting the the tribe that he should have been going to. But he says, You you know, I'm proud of your son. A man's got to choose his own wife.
SPEAKER_04He can't tell you know and also he said he did appreciate he said she's got good strong legs as well. So that's it. Well, that's it.
SPEAKER_03He says you've got to, you know, you've got to choose somebody who's this, this, and this, but strong legs was one of the fairly robust in his joke.
SPEAKER_05Well, as he said, you need to they need to have strong legs to make a man happy. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like good teeth, good eye eyes not too wide, so they don't let the demons in. That was one of the things. That was one of the requirements. You know, strong teeth or something and has strong legs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So anyway, on the way back to their camp, they encounter This other was it the other tribe? It's the rival yeah, the Negents or whatever they were called.
SPEAKER_02They exchange beverages.
SPEAKER_04They they're sort of uh at an uneasy distance from each other and there's a bit of staring at each other, like staring each other down. And they do that sort of ceremony where they exchange milk and there's a tradition of like the two leaders of the And they guys like No, let the let the one of the lessers drink it.
SPEAKER_02He's like, No, no, no, we can't break tradition because that's like really insulting them. And and guys like, Yeah, but look how he's fucking staring at you. Yeah. And they're probably like they're all like, drink the drink. Oh drink it. And he's like he's like, No, no, I've got to do it. And he chins it, and matey over the way he drinks his and that's and then they've to show they've to show the empty. Yeah, we've kind of and wouldn't you know it gloves half an hour later he's he's on his horse and he's feeling a bit under the weather. Yeah, no, he's sure. Poisoned, been fucking poisoned.
SPEAKER_04He's yeah, and he dies pretty soon after that, not before he tells Timudjin you're Khan now. But his after he dies, his lieutenant, and I never really did know how to pronounce this because it was difficult to catch in the movie, Targetai maybe Targetai, yeah. He sort of fancies being Khan and it immediately becomes the kind of raping and pillaging that you maybe kind of associate through popular culture at this time of year. Women being thrown around, all his stuff being stolen. It's the wrath of Khan, isn't it? Yeah, he's the wrath of Khan.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's still too young, Genghis, as before we know him then. It's called it in the film, doesn't it? No, he doesn't. Um yeah, Timudgeon's still too young to you know, fight back and he's basically just trying to be protected, and his when he gets to his mum, she's just trying to protect him.
SPEAKER_04And they're targetizer interested in killing him, but then he realized it's gonna make him look weak in front of the phone.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but they they size him up next to a a cartwheel, literally, one of the horse cartwheels. And if he's not taller than that, then he doesn't he's not a legit target, and he's not a particularly tall boy, and he's not growing very fast, so they keep feeding him, don't they? They tie him up. And they basically keep him prisoner for him.
SPEAKER_04The idea is to keep him prisoner until he grows over. Until he grows him so they can kill him. But he does actually escape and run away. Numerous times. In the beginning, when he's a young kid. The stop. No, that's later. Just the first time he escapes is as a kid. I th I think the implication is one of the villagers, the man who he frees at the who gives a hundred horses at the end is the guy. Oh, yeah, the kind of witch doctor guy, yeah, yeah. And because he goes running off with the stock still on him and he encounters that wolf in a cave.
SPEAKER_05That's where the god is. That's where their god is.
SPEAKER_03Because he goes searching for this god for help. I remember the god's name, but he kind of flashes to and fro, and suddenly the stocks are off.
SPEAKER_04And then he he falls through a a lake, doesn't he? Afterwards towards it, and this is where he's rescued by Jammukkah. Jamukkah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Who is quite quite funny? He looks like a like a Khan, but he's he looks like he's eight. Yeah. You know, as he's there's men, like grown men listening to him. Yeah. And he's like a child.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but he does he does rescue him and like sling him on his horse and take him back and look after him.
SPEAKER_03And you you think that probably the you know the lifespan is not much more than 30 in these years. So by getting an older when you're eight or nine, actually you're a third of the way through your life. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You're choosing a wife at ten and you're getting down to business at fourteen. I mean, that's like what's going on here. Yeah. It's such a flambard move, isn't it? Yeah. So they become when he afterwards he like they become they do like a blood brothers ritual, don't they? They drink they slice their hands and bind it. Do the kind of things they've seen their dads do, and now they're in charge. And then after that there's a bit of a skip because it does have this kind of episodic structure, and some skips are better explained than others. This one is fine, but it we capture him quite a lot older now. He's sort of a young man.
SPEAKER_05Well, I think they tell you that there's the year of the fire dragon or something like that. He's running again. Being but this time he's a like a more adult guy with a beard. Yeah. And he's still got the thing on his neck. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Which he uses to be like, Well, no, he this he gets captured by Targetai again.
SPEAKER_05Oh right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And it's really they drag him along. It's like the the it's the actual actor being dragged along by a horse on the floor, like it looks like pretty brutal.
SPEAKER_05And he's taken back to the camp and then he escapes again when he I can't remember what he says to the witch doctor, he's like, Bring me something, and he just escapes again.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, this is when he No, isn't it? He beats the guy to death with the stars. Yeah, while he's still wearing it, he just bummers him. Yeah. And then he runs off to find Bort Bort license plates.
SPEAKER_02Stop being funny. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Who's been waiting for him way longer than five years now? This is closer to probably eight or or nine years, and she hasn't given up hope.
SPEAKER_04He's chosen well, the strong legs advice from the father.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, she has she has developed into a fine-looking lady, and and they're instantly kind of in love, but they don't have it easy.
SPEAKER_04It's not like it's a straightforward path because Well, they only get pretty much this one encounter together where they're sort of deeply in love, and he's very respectful, which is different to the way that women are treated throughout this movie. But she'll be whisked, she'll be taken away next, won't she?
SPEAKER_03She gets captured. She's taken, and then the next time we see her, he's he's freeing her after a a big bloody battle in which he's managed to secure his friend to come and save her. And he says, Look, we don't do that for women, you can have a load of other women, we're not gonna start a war over a woman, but he does.
SPEAKER_04But he tells him, Okay, I'll do I'll do it with you, but you've got to wait a year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. You've got to wait a year. He waits that year because he knows he can't do it alone, and when he sees her, she's pregnant.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's a good battle, it just does not I yeah, we can skip past it, but it's lots of blood spraying and there's a big fight. Yeah, and they stretch the budget as far as they could go, but I like the ambition. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And he's very pragmatic about it. He's like, Well, come on, this is my this is my son now that you've got here, even though it's just like straight away, yeah, fine, well we'll just do that on board as well. He tells everybody, you know, you've saved my wife and you know she's carrying my son. There's no inkling that it isn't his son or anything to do with her. And I always thought that was kind of you know, I don't know the culture and things like that or around the time, but it was just one of those things where the love for his his wife it superseded everything, and she's obviously been through a horrible, horrific time which has taken her to that point, yet at no point does he let her down and think she's suddenly not worth myself or anything. You know, he's just he just doubles. Yeah, he just doubles down with her every time because I mean it didn't happen again later on in the film. Yeah, yeah, yeah. She had another kid, she has another kid with another fellow carol.
SPEAKER_04Well they they're separated by circumstance, not because they don't want to leave. No, that's it. Yeah, yeah. We know what goes on.
SPEAKER_02I was expecting him to be way more rapian, yeah.
SPEAKER_04He seems like very well that's because he's being set up to lead in the they're positioning Genghis Khan at the end of this as some kind of revolutionary rights leader, really. And I don't know if that's true or not, but they certainly have him standing up for some kind of order in a way that others don't.
SPEAKER_03Like he's trying to reuniting the Mongol tribes together and saying, this yeah, this is it. It was. It was it was like we are, you know, Mongol people shouldn't have because a couple of times they talk about, you know, he's because he's from the the the Mongol kind of tribes, he shouldn't have to do this, he shouldn't have to do that. You know, it's not like he's a lower caste or he's a lower tribe. He's Mongol people, so he get he deserves that respect and everything, or he deserves this kind of uh attention or accolade or or reward after fighting and killing.
SPEAKER_04Well, after this scene, after he rescues Bor, because the uh he says there's what about all the stuff, all the money that we've taken? He's like, Oh, I'll just take ten percent and the rest goes to everybody else. That's right. And he just starts to sow the seeds of trouble between him and Jammuka, because he he ha he's quite high up, he's got quite a lot of men underneath it. Yeah, Tamuka's like he wants he starts losing them to Timujin. There are a few of them are like, oh, let's go and join with Timujin. Because he's there with his men, and he's like, This is a dangerous idea. We don't want people to start getting this approach.
SPEAKER_03Even though he's the blood brother of him, he's like he takes a couple of his best men, it's worse because it's an accidental killing of the city.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, someone he fesses up straight away, he's like, Fuck, we killed someone, we I didn't recognise him. Yeah. But they were trying to nick some horses, horses, and he's like, Well, we killed him, and then we realized, and the guy's like, Cut off my head, send me his head. Like, that'll that'll like put it right. You're like, Oh fucking hell, he's pretty forthcoming. Yeah, pretty forthcoming. He's like, No, no, we're not gonna do that.
SPEAKER_05And then, but that's when the wife comes into play as well, because she gives him solid advice every time when there's he's at a crossroad, or yeah, he doesn't he's thinking, she's like, That guy stood by you, he did nothing wrong, he killed someone that was trying to steal your horses. Yeah, what message are you sending to your people if you're just gonna send him that? Yeah, well, if they do the right thing, they're still string him up. Yeah, so she did gives him solid advice, and then he goes to speak to uh she's like hi chao, isn't she? Yeah, solid advice. And then he goes and and they have this Janka goes after him, and then he's like, right, well, we need to have a fight now. Yeah. That's pretty much how it is. Yeah. He does get. Does he become prisoner and then he's a good one?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Jamica comes after him with a lot of his men and they massively outnumber him, and they take him off and they take him to be a slave. Yeah. And I think these guys were Chinese, were they? Sun tanned, and he gets really like Yeah, his face gets weathered from the lot.
SPEAKER_05I think it's also a lot of dirt, yeah. On because there's no there's no shower, there's no one suite in the case.
SPEAKER_04He costs five ropes or whatever because he killed the guy's guard. So when this nobleman shows an interest in him, he's gonna be a bit more of an expensive one, and he's got a monk alongside him and kind of for shadowing no mat. He's like, This guy's bad news.
SPEAKER_05The monk is the same monk that does the trip to meat board at the end.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yeah. And yeah, so he warns the nobleman, he's like, This guy's gonna bring the revolution, he's gonna he's gonna kill everyone, or something like that.
SPEAKER_00He's like, Swam? The Simpsons. Simpsons, the Simpsons license plates, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Bart's looking for the part one, and it's like Barry Bo. And then suddenly it's back later, and then all the bought ones are sold out.
SPEAKER_04And then that that woman's like, Bort, where are you?
SPEAKER_03I remember I remember.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Anyway, so yeah, he gets old because this was the the um kingdom of Tangut or something like that, right? And I I'm gonna I'm not gonna lie, I don't know where the border would have been, but I would imagine it was between Mongolia and China or something like that, right? So he would be sent to the one of the border towns and he was there put into a cave where it said, Behold the Mongol who tried to destroy an empire or something like that, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because that was the prophecy of the monk, and this ruler of that land was like, Alright, well, let's see him there in the He's also made Tabush's made like a strict this is this is our laws, this is the the code we're gonna live by. Yeah. So that everyone knows, like throughout the whole all of his crew, like you're loyal, you don't steal blood.
SPEAKER_04Women are you're more respectful to women again, is the thing.
SPEAKER_02And then and then this the he does get two people that have crossed him, yeah, and they're just taking aside and fucking. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So the monk as well, so the monk from who was warning about it, he gets real jittery, goes to see him, makes him promise look, when you get out of here, don't spare the mon b basically spare the monastery. And he says, I will do, but you've got to take this bit of bone.
SPEAKER_03You've got to take my boner to bore, yeah. Like a wishbone they've been passing around. Since the child bride scene, you know, they've done that.
SPEAKER_02So you rub my bone every time you I'm gonna try that one.
SPEAKER_04So the monk like walks to board, actually dies on the way.
SPEAKER_05And she she has like a vision, she wakes up, and with the kid, they just run and find him, and they just find the wishbone, and she knows where this man came from, that's where I need to go. Yeah, and she just sits there and waits for the caravan. Yeah, and that's where we see the gold ring man, the gold earring, that's what his his nickname was. Because you see the monk looking for for him, and then on the way back, she's like, Well, he's like, Well, there's no one behind us on the last caravan, and he's like, You can't pay us, and he's like, How are you gonna pay me? And she's like, You know how I'm gonna pay you. And next time we see her, he she's got another kid, so shut the tough.
SPEAKER_04He's like, and she's like, This is dad, and they were like, Oh, but what about that other guy? Like, no, this is your dad now.
SPEAKER_02This is his dad now, and the kids are like, Okay, well, fine, that's dad. Well, the older one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and they're looking over the top of the That's your dad. He does he does say, Yeah, no, it's okay, that's dad. Like, you know, he's thinking, geez, I don't know what life's going on around here. But yeah, such as their love stories, such as their their life, it hasn't been straightforward for them since day dot, really, is it? But there was, as you say, this kind of love story where as kids they'd you know had that connection and seen it through all the way up until this point. And we don't really go into Genghis being well, you know, Temgan, whatever you want to imagine being Genghis. We just kind of get up we know he's not my preconceived notion of what Genghis can't be.
SPEAKER_02Well no, but it's also we we do have the final well say you do see the Empire grow and grow and grow, because when it gets to the final fight, you know, the the Yeah, but the time skips so far that it seems so weird. But we also it has to zoom right out to show you just the size of the armies they're now fighting each. Yeah, you know, it's it's got it's got big.
SPEAKER_04Just to finish off the movie, I guess she for follows that caravan into town posing as a concubine. Yeah. And like being all sexy and stuff and fucking getting the keys. She holds that knife to that guy's throat, doesn't she?
SPEAKER_05Well, she pays them the money that they agree, and then she throws she gives them her necklace that Temujin gave her when when she when they got married or something like that. And she she gets the key, frees him, and then they go back to the step where they initially were living. Yeah. And then his empire grows, and more people know the story of who he is. And I guess this is what they're saying is that's why this keeps so far forward, is because his legend grows. Yeah. Because even when he escapes the second time from whatever the guy's name was, he Targutai. Targutai. There was another guy that he's like, Oh, I'm Temujin, I'm looking for a horse, and the guy goes, I know who you are, take my horse and go, right? So it's almost like he's his reputation's growing.
SPEAKER_04And also, we've seen the reason that people would want to be led by him. He is a according to the film, a generous, you know, he's interested.
SPEAKER_02If you toe the line, everything will be rosy, but balanced up against the other kind of leaders.
SPEAKER_03What else is going on? He's absolutely fair.
SPEAKER_04So it all ends in this massive, like Lord of the Rings style battle that does have some fairly interesting features, I thought, of the way like the two armies line up, and then a load of people go on horses and they come out in like a real thin line at first and then they split and they go down with their swords. That's a nice scene.
SPEAKER_03There's strategy, isn't there? And there's And then they peel it back.
SPEAKER_04The horses he sacrifices his own men because there's people with the bows and arrows, but just down behind the ridge, and they all pop up. They pop up and they shoot even their own men to kill the advancing uh uses the landscape, he uses what's a pure numbers game. It is a pure numbers game, and they're outnumbered actually, but just as the battle is becoming like really fierce, there's this big storm that starts, and everybody starts cowering on the floor. Everybody's scared of it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because all Mongols are scared of thunder. Yeah. Which you get, they wouldn't have had a clue what you know.
SPEAKER_04That's that's gonna be the gods. The gods are being angry, everyone's angry. But he's he stays on his Temujin stays strong and they catch eye with him, and he sort of raises his sword triumphantly and he raises his men up and they're able to Which seems risky.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. I was thinking I was thinking that is the the the point that's a real power player. Yeah, yeah. But he he gets away with that and his legend is is born and they basically slaughter everybody.
SPEAKER_04I mean, there are a number of fights where it boils down. You see loads of people, and then it boils down to like three or four guys left just fighting out the rest of it. They targetai is killed in the battle.
SPEAKER_05Targetai is killed, and uh the only one that's survived, they find Jamukha and they bring him back to him, and then he releases it.
SPEAKER_00He basically says he gets the fuck off. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Don't let it be. And he's like, I release a brother, not an enemy, or something like that. Hard but fair. Yeah. And I think that's the end. That's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_04I think it's the end of the film, but just the beginning of the. They tell us, oh, that he was proclaimed Khan of all the Mongols, Genghis Khan of the Great Steppe in twelve oh six, and that he did, in fact, keep his promise to spare the monastery. Yeah. In f and he did so when they attacked that region in twelve twenty-seven.
SPEAKER_05The the the main point why this is important apparently of this monastery is that the monastery is where they found the fact that he was called Temujin and all this on what this film is based on as a child, that's where the writings were by some monk. And I don't know, a thousand years later, apparently that's where they found the manuscript and it translated it, and they realised that that's the origin story of uh Genghis Khan in that monastery. So apparently that's the That's interesting. That's the idea of that monastery.
SPEAKER_03I I tell you what, this is slightly on a tangent, but talking about uh manuscripts, and there was a a YouTube thing that we were watching last night about Pompeii, and obviously there was that volcano and it just kind of made everything into charcoal and everything. And there was loads of scrolls and things that were there, and they didn't really when they found Pompey, they didn't know what it was. Like you didn't think kind of brown, you know, logs and things, they realised actually there were scrolls, and now they've been able to X-ray them and use computers.
SPEAKER_04Oh, AI to read them again, to read them, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I to roll them out onto you know, so how the fuck does that work? It just blew my blew my mind. So it's basically just like a a shit volcanoes run. That's what I was joking about yesterday. Taking all this time and everything, it just goes it's just gonna say, Oh, my shits really stink when I you know you'd be something that's absolutely but it wasn't, it was about all these Greek philosophers that had given various stoicism kind of talks and and scrolls and things, but it just blew my mind when you mentioned scrolls and the monastery not being uh destroyed, then even those you know that they can do wonders with them now, so just keeping hold of them. It's an interesting story, this though. I've always been interested in in Genghis. It was not at all what I thought it was gonna be like.
SPEAKER_04No, no, he was a lawbringer. I mean, is that is this whitewashing now of what he did 800 years ago?
SPEAKER_05Well, boy, it was a kid, right? I think is the origin story. This is not when he became Khan and decided to have history's greatest monsters or something. When he became Khan and decided to conquer half of the world, that's the beginning of it, then how he Lawrence of Arabia brought all the tribes together.
SPEAKER_02Painting the picture of him being like, you know, Mr. Lover Lover, his Savinger's wife, and yet all the other stuff you hear is how he's like raped millions of women or something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Something like a fifth of the people in the world have got his genes in them or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was expecting it to be way, way more violent and stuff and that. Well, just wasn't the film I was expecting. I was surprised.
SPEAKER_03Did you say that the director, film origin producer was he was the director was Russian, but he was a very good thing. Kazakhstan, Mongolian, German, so Bodrov. Right, okay. So Yeah, I mean it just history is is often written by the winners and things, and and obviously there's a cultural thing there, but you don't know that this wouldn't be how people in in Russia, Mongolia actually do look on Genghis Khan in the sense that he he might you know, there's a different lean on the on the story and things. 'Cause it is obviously a lot nicer to Genghis than stories that we might have heard in the past it which makes him out to be this horrible rapist kind of lead. But a lot of horses. A lot of horses. But be being that you know a a fair leader in those times or somebody at least you knew where you stood. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, like Daenerys you know unites with the armies and then just goes like fucking mentor at the end. Yeah. Maybe that's the same thing. If they needed to get a message from one side of his kingdom to the other, you would just have a guy who could they would be able to do three hundred miles or something on a horse full pelt till it just died and jump onto the next one and they could get a message, I don't know, it was like some crazy I mean email's way quicker but in those days the old smoke signals or whatever, you know Yeah they could they could get a message from one side to the other in like pretty quick time considering, you know, and all that sort of stuff. And they invented like composite materials for the bows and all that sort of stuff.
SPEAKER_04They were quite advanced, weren't they? I think you'd have to be to conquer what they did.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I quite liked this. He w he went for a long old time as well. As far as the film went, I I liked it as well because it was a different take on I just didn't know this story at all.
SPEAKER_02On Genghis No, I was expecting like loads of rape, loads of murder and stuff and it almost bore down to like a family feud in a way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah a couple of people well I think I guess obviously I don't know a lot but I know enough about that kind of stuff because we studied in school a few things about that kind of side of the world and the the the Mongols came fairly close to because well I'm from Romania is fair further east and we we had a few of their sub tribes kind of infiltrating through but we didn't get them they didn't come all the way that close to to to Romania let's say but we knew these kind of things and you also had this is just a story all the time right all the kings and all the leaders what did they do is they united all the tribes. Yeah. Right? That that's what they did and I think this kind of becomes more believable because that's basically the the t idea of it and that's his believe it or not his life that's just how they made this film. I enjoyed this film. It was a bit long to be honest.
SPEAKER_02It it was quite slow paced I have to say I did find it drag a little bit but I thought it had a nice sort of authentic look to it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The landscape you point a camera at that kind of landscape you can't go that wrong.
SPEAKER_04Like you said they become a little bit samey and sometimes the episodic structure made less sense. I mean it was fine when we were talking about it actually but when I was watching it sometimes I was a bit like you had to really concentrate on it.
SPEAKER_02Because the there's foreign language stuff but you can still pick up a few words. This is like nothing to follow it properly. You couldn't definitely couldn't second screen this.
SPEAKER_04No Yeah best Kazakhni Russian German Mongolian movie I've watched this week certainly on Genghis Khan.
SPEAKER_02Yeah it's a bought recommend for me right excellent week that was Chris's noms that was me yeah. Who's Noms to the next weeks?
SPEAKER_04Boy will choose time I'm gonna have to see it's quite a good idea because I've seen that so many times I think I could do that and then just pick another mission. Pins we could do a pin week King pin and yeah bowling maybe some sort of lends itself Honestly I keep thinking I'm gonna just gonna pull the I'm just gonna pull the pin and do it.
SPEAKER_02Let's do it. Kingpin and Lebowski we'll do bowling week. I've not seen Lebowski so no what if he doesn't like it we'll have to have him killed it right that's it Kingpin and Lebowski and top five bowling and top five bowls.
SPEAKER_03Okay yeah yeah right will join us next week then for promises to win absolute banger.
SPEAKER_02Okay. All that remains is to say Sidey's signing out. Reeves has left the building lot of a daddy Dan's gone
