Wolves & The Wolf of Wall Street

Wolves & The Wolf of Wall Street

This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Wolf Week continues as Sidey, Dan and new dad Jamie sink their teeth into Martin Scorsese’s riotous financial crime epic The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau and Joanna Lumley.

With Reegs absent and therefore no proper intro to keep things vaguely professional, the dads begin by catching up on what they’ve been watching. Dan has largely swapped screen time for Cold War spy histories while his wife is away in the Czech Republic for the summer, Jamie has returned to the comforting embrace of Blue Bloods, No Offence and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and Sidey has endured Jason Statham’s Mutiny, a revenge-on-a-boat action thriller with suspiciously Die Hard-adjacent poster energy.

The Top 5 this week is Wolves, which naturally sends the conversation roaming all over the cultural wilderness. There’s Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction, Moro from Princess Mononoke, Teen Wolf and the obvious sporting advantage of being Michael J. Fox with werewolf powers, plus Shrek’s Big Bad Wolf and a detour through wolf-related music from Warren Zevon, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Duran Duran, Howlin’ Wolf, Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, Wolfmother and Wolf Alice. Liam Neeson’s miserable survival odds in The Grey get a mention, as do Bad Wolf and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who, Jack Nicholson in Wolf, Remus Lupin, Dances with Wolves, Portia Crystal from Sing 2, Lupine Howl, the direwolves from Game of Thrones, How Wolves Change Rivers, Rainier Wolfcastle and Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Then it’s on to The Wolf of Wall Street, a film the dads note is arriving neatly alongside Jersey’s current Martin Scorsese cinema season. They follow Jordan Belfort from his first day as Wall Street pond scum through Matthew McConaughey’s career-rescuing lunch scene of coke, booze,chest-thumping and “rookie numbers”, before Black Monday promptly ends any chance of a respectable finance career. From there it’s penny stocks, Spike Jonze, 50% commissions and the arrival of Donnie Azoff, whose cousin-wife logic, blinding white teeth and crack-pipe networking help turn Stratton Oakmont into a full-blown fraud machine.

Along the way, the dads dig into the film’s most notorious moments: the “sell me this pen” lesson, motivational speeches, middle fingers to clients, dwarf tossing, strippers, head shaving, Rob Reiner as Belfort’s furious father, Margot Robbie’s Naomi making her entrance, Donnie’s appalling first impression, the famous 11-second romance, Vegas excess, penicillin shots and a superyacht wedding present. They also cover Kyle Chandler’s FBI agent Patrick Denham closing in, Jon Favreau’s lawyer trying desperately to make Jordan stop, the Steve Madden IPO, hidden stock ownership, Joanna Lumley’s Aunt Emma and the Swiss bank account, plus Jordan’s spectacularly arrogant attempt to bribe the FBI with lobster, prostitutes and absolutely no self-awareness.

The review also takes in the yacht storm and Italian rescue, the infamous Lemmon Quaaludes sequence with crawling, ham-choking and the destroyed Lamborghini reveal, Jordan wearing a wire while warning Donnie not to incriminate himself, and the ugly final collapse as Naomi demands a divorce, Jordan turns violent and everything finally crashes. By the end, the dads are left wrestling with prison, sales seminars and the uncomfortable question of whether the film really works as a cautionary tale, or whether it is simply too entertaining for its own good.

Verdicts are strong across the board. Sidey recommends it, while still insisting it is far too long. Dan also gives it a strong recommend, particularly for the endlessly quotable scenes, and Jamie calls it a must-watch — although preferably consumed as three one-hour chunks rather than one enormous sitting.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Continuation of Wolf Week.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Woo!

SPEAKER_01

As disclosed, no rigs. As as foreshadowing. Equals no intro. But Jamie's still with us. Yay. So we're going to talk today. Top five wolves. Aye. And the film we're talking about is The Wolf of Wall Street. Can see how that all's in it though than you blends together. Yeah. Um but before we get into that, Dan, would you watch much this week? Um did I?

SPEAKER_02

No, not really. I I've been in a few YouTube holes really and been reading. Oh, you still were learned dating one? Yeah, I'm still into these these books that are going through the history of like the Cold War and things like that with these different spy stories. And while everyone's away from my house and has been for the last five or six weeks. Do you notice Dan's wife just disappears for the whole summer be? Yeah, she's lovely. She goes, I mean, no, it doesn't always she thinks so. Yeah, she goes home to Czech Republic to visit her family and leaves me all alone, fending me myself in the through the summer holidays and everything. Yeah, but it does mean that I can get some reading done.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And watch football and movies and and that's what I've done, but not any TV watching beyond the homework this week. What about you, Jenny?

SPEAKER_00

Done a lot of watching old stuff because I couldn't abode watching anything new, like Blue Bloods, which I love watching that because it makes me so angry because it's bad. An old show called No Offense. Sort of Manchester cop show, really good. And the Big Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Feels to Save the Universe. Oh yeah, you said about that, yeah. Yeah. It's good. It's you know, it's it's not Big Bang Theory, and my favourite thing about it is the title sequences every week, and it's yeah, it's a good laugh, but not really watched a lot of new stuff to be honest.

SPEAKER_01

I watched something almost brand new. In fact, it fucking is brand new, Mutiny. What? Jason Statham. Okay. Um I wonder what it's gonna be. He's an ex-cop doing private security for a guy. Wow, so it's totally new premise. And the guy's bleaking you go the guy ends up being assassinated and he goes on a revenge mission. No way, not an revenge mission. Wait, which takes place on a boat, hence the mutiny. Although it was never part of the cruise, it was technically not. But I thought it might have been. I want to show you later the poster, because when you see the poster, if you sort of just glance at you like you think it's this is what caught my eye when I saw it. I thought it was diehard. It's it is the fucking they've got the ship, like it looks like the Nakatomi Tower, and then they've got his face, and you're like, fucking hell, it's such an obvious rip-off. He chat DBT make a pull stuff on my new. Honestly, that's what they've done. And the film is like technically it's like it's bad. Like it's it's a badly made film, I would say, and it's crap, but I fucking really enjoyed it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, did you start a course?

SPEAKER_01

It's straightened. Yeah. Um you staphened the course. I think it's probably 80 minutes, something like that. And there's bonus in it and stuff, and he just kills loads of people.

SPEAKER_02

It's got a formula, it works. For those of you who haven't picked up, there's a a new dad in the house. You may not have listened to the midweekers, so um we should give Jamie a Jamie a shout-out.

SPEAKER_00

Shout out to me, hello.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Hi, yeah, I'm just here on uh the new we often and uh in it.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

What was it? I don't know, you're the you're the sculptor. Well, let's keep going.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Jamie and I have been parents for a long time. We worked together a pretty long time. The same amount of time, because that's our name. Yeah. And Jamie's been keen to pop his pod cherry, so here we are.

SPEAKER_02

Which he already did do in the midweek if people listen back for the amazing American werewolf in London.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, strong recommend for that one. Should we crack on then talking about our top five wolves? Let's do it.

SPEAKER_00

I spent a lot of time thinking about this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you were quite keen on this.

SPEAKER_00

Because I went far too literal.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Then I thought that's not good enough. So I went far too esoteric looking up like ancient Germanic translations of anything that could remotely be a wolf.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

And then I got drunk, and then what I've got left with is the five things that somehow I made a note of on my phone.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, cool. Do you want to give us the first one of those?

SPEAKER_00

I then put them in order. Should they be in order?

SPEAKER_01

No, just what we would normally do is sum and then we'd save our best, our favourite for our nomination to go in the top five. I see.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the first one on my list is Winston Wolfe. Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction. Yeah, of course. Cool character, great dialogue, and just comes in and fixes it. I'm a huge Tarantino fan because he has his own genre and he has, you know, I think outside of white shirts and black ties, Winston Wolf is the most Tarantino thing outside of feet.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, he's some character when we watched it Pulp Fiction for the first time. Yeah. And you just think, How the fuck are they getting out of this? And you've got somebody at the end of the phone. Is it Win? What's the who's the guy they kill in the back of the car? Marvin. Marvin, that's it. Marvin in the face. Vincent Vega just whoops, just like blows his brains away. And while they're all losing their shit and panicking a bit, he comes in just cool as a cucumber. He's seen it all before. He's giving Tarantino who's doing his cool as his.

SPEAKER_01

It does clash with a bit of terrible acting from Tarantino talking about his sheets. Now he we can't use those sheets.

SPEAKER_02

I'm an oasis myself. He's giving he's just wheeling off like hundred dollar bills to top.

SPEAKER_00

I love any character that's sort of his own pre-made day sex marketing. He just sort of, you know, I I couldn't be half-writing a solution to this, so he's Harvey Keitel to the great performance. Who's turned up from a party or something? Yeah. Yeah. Never quite know what time of day it is, but you're still in a tuxedo.

SPEAKER_02

In the tux, that's it. I'll drive that car, you drive mine, don't dent it, let's go. And they get rid of the body. And actually, as we as those that have seen Pulp Fiction, pretty pretty much everyone has, that scene is the one that starts the film following that. So it comes back round, isn't it? And they meet in the cafe, and that's the kind of day they've already had, which is why when they're robbing the cafe and he's saying Jules has had enough.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, that's that's a good shout. I've got an animated one which features a 300-year-old wolf god. Umro, not our captain. Not the captain of our ship, Captain Moro. This is Moro, it's yeah, Princess Mononoke. Yeah, which is which I sat down to watch with my daughter when she was way too because I was like, most of these are pretty cutesy wootsy, not all. And someone, I think, in the first few minutes is decapitated by an arrow. Yeah. And it's like, oh, maybe maybe we should not watch this. Would you go dubs or subtitled on these?

SPEAKER_00

Well, me being somewhat of a closet pretentious knob, I do both. Right. But animated, I'm okay with going dubbed. Yeah. I just I love Studio Ghibli just for the visual spectacle, I'm not really caring about who's saying what or where.

SPEAKER_01

They told me that for what some reason they like to get famous voice actors, which then I try and remember who that voice is that I recognise you could have just had anyone doing the you don't need to get, you know, like Johnny Deff and fucking whoever. But they do. But this is I this possibly is my favourite of Studio Juppie. Possibly. It's right up there anyway. It's definitely one of my favourites, yeah. Yeah, it's it's outstanding, and it's a big fucking wolfest guy.

SPEAKER_00

She, yeah. Sorry, she. And she's also the voice of the nature against humanity, which I think because that came out in like 91, I think.

SPEAKER_01

97.

SPEAKER_00

97. So, you know, we're talking 30 odd years later, and it's still as much, if not mostly, so yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Daniel. Teen Wolf, can't forget Michael J. Fox coming up playing uh the the coolest.

SPEAKER_01

It was nearly the norm, wasn't it? Riggs Riggs like put it forward last week. Yeah, and we were like, no, absolutely. Nearly one movie.

SPEAKER_02

But it it was one of those movies I remember as as a kid watching and it being you know, Michael J. Fox right at the the top of his wolfness, wolfness and his his his howling. I would say the transformations in that still not as good as American werewolf. No, isn't there a bit right at the end on the stage where somebody gets their dick out or Yes, they're not supposed to the authority and sade his voice.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, because it was like it's one of those movie Easter eggs where someone just like flashed on like behind the scenes and they just made it into the movie.

SPEAKER_02

And they just couldn't cut it in time or whatever. But yeah, he's he's the it gives him a sort of unfair advantage when it comes to basketball. Yeah, he's he's able to to dunk, isn't he? Yeah, he's able just to go off and he doesn't really use the team as much, and then it comes to the championship game and he plays himself rather than the wolf, although the whole yeah, the the whole crowd want the wolf to deliver.

SPEAKER_01

It did spawn a sequel. It did. Team Wolf 2 and spawned a few sequels TV series, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I've never seen the sequel, I must say. I'm beginning to doubt if I've seen the first one now. I thought I had.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you'd remember that dick. I tend to remember all the dicks, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, go and we'll put in that. Next one I've got is the Big Bad Wolf from Shrek. Oh yeah. Because you know, who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf realize actually it's just a cross dresser who sits in her head all day, pretending to be a grand. But throughout the seven million Shrek sequels they did, I've always loved the Big Bad Wolf just being sort of a deadpan comedic relief to in the first one, you know, it's it's like a funny play on the pennytail. By the end of it, it's like it's the only thing that keeps the thread together is the Big Bad Wolf just basically being breaking the fourth wall, which is to me it's a mention.

SPEAKER_01

A nice one. There's loads of songs with werewolf or wolf and stuff going on. Werewolves of London, Warren Zeffen. I think that might have been in American Werewolf, I think. That's got Fleetwood Max, John McVe, and Mick Fleetwood playing in the rhythm section of that band. It's really good. Bark at the Moon, an Aussie Osborne song, he goes full prosthetic wolf in the video. Of Wolf and Man, Metallica off the black album. And who could forget Hungry Like the Wolf by Joran Juran? Yeah. It's quite a rich vein of million other ones. Wolves, isn't it? Yeah. Band names, Helen Wolf, Steppenwolf, Los Lobos, Wolf Mother, Wolf Alice.

SPEAKER_02

I was trying to think of the football team, Wolves, if they had any like feature in a in a film or something, and I I I couldn't find that. I know they had Steve Wolves played for Wolves, so I'm not sure how long he would have lasted.

SPEAKER_00

So when I was asking the rules about this, you said make it as tenuous as possible. You really meant make it as possible.

SPEAKER_01

They ever had like a cup final song or anything like that.

SPEAKER_02

They might have got him in there. Anyway, I didn't explore that rabbit hole quite as much as I could have, but I did remember a film called The Grey with Liam Neiss, where he gets dumped out in the wilderness, and the final scene is him. He's been battling wolves the whole kind of film. Have you seen that? No. Oh, right. It's not bad actually, you know. And the last scene, he he's survived so long, and this kind of alpha wolf has been after him with the pack. And I think the plane had come down and he he was able to get away and survive, and he's done all these things, and the last bit of it, he just kind of duct tapes knives to his hand. Like Gunsakimbo, but not like yeah, and it because he knows he's just gonna be like and it closes, they all kind of close down. You know, there's the wolves hunting packs and they're not just kind of one, so it's one pops up, two pops up, and he's just in full of snow and everything. I guess I ain't cut to black. It isn't it isn't looking good, but it's it was a decent movie. Yeah, the great. I'm surprised you've not seen that.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, I haven't seen it. I can't I don't know if I I feel that sounds really familiar. Yeah. I don't think I've seen it, but I think I might have been sitting flicking through my phone and seeing odd clips of it.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Yeah, yeah. I sort of get a bit like a few years ago when I watch another I sort of can't really take Liam News and seriously as an action kind of I don't think he can either. But then when I do watch them, I do quite enjoy them, so I should get him get involved in that one.

SPEAKER_02

When he was a little bit younger, it wasn't you know, when he did the I Will Find You Taken, that was his sort of debut in that, or at least his best one. Didn't he do like an Ice Trucker's one as well? Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well after Take It just basically became typecast, didn't it? Because again, Taken had way too many sequels. Yes, yeah. And then they tried to get back into comedy and made Naked. Naked Gun, yeah. Yeah, I don't like to talk about it.

SPEAKER_02

Well I didn't think it was as bad as so I can't comment. So Because I'm a big fan of obviously the the Naked Gun, so yeah, I just thought they could have butchered this and and normally I steer away from films that I really like and they've done a sequel like Papillo. I thought, why are you gonna do a new Papillo? And when I watched the the newer one, actually I thought it was only good.

SPEAKER_00

It was pretty good. My next one is Rose Taylor from Doctor Who. So in the Russell T. Davis reading, there's a whole series arc over three series of bad wolf. Right. When it turns out that Rose Taylor, you know, is a bad wolf, but when when you're watching it live, you realise that for three whole seasons he's just planted little tiny clues and Easter eggs everywhere.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And it just made like the the the watching and the rewatchability of those early Doctor Whoey boots and a massive Doctor Hoogeek really enjoyable, and the payoff was fantastic because you genuinely didn't see it coming. Yeah. What's going on with that now? Uh God only knows. Everyone's sort of left all the time. Yeah, they decided to Disney. Yeah, I saw that and then it went. And then Disney got to the refund, I think.

SPEAKER_01

But everyone all those guys have all gone, haven't they?

SPEAKER_00

Well they they tried to bring back Russell T. Davis and basically make they tried to make it 2002 again. Yeah. Philly Piper was gonna maybe be the Chuty Gatler, who's a phenomenal actor.

SPEAKER_01

He was never fully into it, I don't think.

SPEAKER_00

You could tell he wasn't into it, but he's got such great action chops. But then, much like previous people that had played Doctor Who, you had fantastic actors with terrible scripts.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then, you know, when I started watching Doctor Who, it had been about 30 years since it was on. And it's now been about 30 years since then, so I think it's a bit time for it to to die and wait a while.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um what we were talking about nominating, maybe as a movie, would have involved Will Randall. Jack Nicholson played him in 1994's Wolf. Wolf. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

When he he kind of he he's driving down a snowy path and he hits a a wolf and thinks it's dead, tries to drag it off. It's not dead, they're never dead. They're never dead. If ever you hit wolf, they're never dead. Don't try and drag it off. Just drive over it, and you know, it's if it's dead, it's not it's not gonna it's not gonna matter. And well, it's better than getting bitten and then he sort of went away and he drove away, and the wolf was just kind of watching him, and you think something's gonna happen here, and of course it does.

SPEAKER_00

Feel like in that movie Jack Nicholson was the FX guy's like wet dream because he didn't even watch to just kind of look a bit like an adult.

SPEAKER_01

Just go and watch a few Lakers games, have a few like nights out, and then it'll be fun. But also from the Harry Potter series, Remus Lupin. I mean, what are the odds when your name is Lupin and you are also a werewolf? I mean we should have seen the comment, you know. Yeah, everyone should have. We talked about the difference between practical effects and CGI, and I have to say I think it looks pretty lame. Oh, that's awful. Fenry or greyback? No, I was gonna say Severus. Not Severus. Severac. Yes. In Azkaban, Prison of Azaban by the Wamping Willow. They have a little werewolf off, don't they? But I think, yeah, if he's called looping, come on. Dances with wolves, Carson. Avatar people.

SPEAKER_02

Well, they they they call him at all that the Indian the North American indigenous people, they call him that, don't they? Oh, he's Dancers with wolves. It was one of only four Westerns to win the Academy Award for best picture. Do you know the other one? Unforgiven? Yep. Good, bad, and ugly. Stagecoach? Cimarron in 1931. I've never seen that. And No Country for Old Men as well as Unforgiven. We're calling that a Western. Okay. Is that a Western? That's what they're saying. It's in the West. Revisionist Western. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean it's Daniel DeLue, so it's together, isn't it? But they there will be blood, so I didn't let themselves make up.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it was it made a shitload of money at 4. So what do you call that Oscar Bate? Dancing Revolves back in 1990. It actually has been entered into like the archives.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, almost every fucking film does in America. But um because I've got that in my stat in my trivia on loads of films I do my research. But he never seemed to get over he'd like a real hard one for making three-hour long movies after that, didn't he? Yeah. It's like an hour and a half is fine, and you can you can still have a good film, it's an hour and a half long.

SPEAKER_00

Postman's one of the most chronically underrated movies ever, by the way. I've never seen it. It's fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we struggled with nominations like that.

SPEAKER_00

Give me some pearls to cut, please.

SPEAKER_01

So we nominated it to enforce him, enforce his watchiness of it, and he fucking skipped it. He took a whole missing out of it. We did the intro about what you watched this week. It'd be like, Oh yeah, I watched like you know, let record one, two, three, four, and five. Yeah. Oh, I didn't have time to watch Lawrence. It's like, sorry, what?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He even watched Cats, didn't he? Well that was which was awful. Yeah, Dancers with Wolves, Kevin Costner. Yeah, the first of his you know, three-hour movies.

SPEAKER_00

Right. So I can't do my next one because you did it. My last one is Porsche Crystal, who's from the animated musical Sing Two. Oh I like that scene actually. Great movie, watch it with the kids, you can enjoy it as an adult. Soundtrack's brilliant. She's voiced by Halsey, the musician, right, who does some brilliant songs and has a real good sort of ar arc of you know being a spoiled brat with no talent, Nepo baby, and then you know, turns into actually being quite a good person who you don't hate, which is the storyline of many of the actors who are in that film. So yeah, and she's got a fantastic, really like Brooklyn accent, which uh yeah, I love to see. So she gets she gets in my the the last entry on my list.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So right, band I fucking love, spiritualised, and in the 90s they released an album called Ladies and Gentlemen Floating in Space, and when they were touring that at the time, people like musical people who were you know fans of live music would basically describe them as being like this guy that that was the brain spun spiritualized had assembled like one of the just great touring rock bands, Bees of Bible Lunacy, he was a heron addict, and one day he just sacked them all. They were Mike Mooney, Damon Reese, and Sean Cook. So they said, right, fuck you. And they formed their own band called Lupine Howe. Right? And their first album was called The Carnivorous Lunar Activities of Lupine Howe.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I like how you tied that in.

SPEAKER_01

It wasn't very good, unfortunately, because it turns out that the guy that wrote all the songs for Spiritualized was really the brains behind it. So that's that's why you have kind of sexy musicians who are great, yeah, but maybe not the best songwriters. They did a second album and then they disappeared after that, and just after that is my nom.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. You remember the the animations we were kids and they always you had three little pigs, yeah. And and so, yeah, and I'm gonna half and puff and blow your health down. I'm not sure actually what the I think was it Hannah Barber or was it Disney or was it whatever? I can't remember who who did them, but somebody out there will know that's not my nom. I was gonna mention the dire wolves on Game of Thrones because they're big old wolves and it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Nightmare was Sansa's, the lady was sans, Nymeera was Arias.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they were loyal, loyal wolves. But my nom is going to be actually it's almost like documentary stuff. It's on a channel called Sustainable Human, but you can get it on anything else. It's about 20 minutes long, and it's called How Wolves Change Rivers. I don't know if ever you've seen it before, but it is a a documentary piece on exactly that how wolves in Yellowstone National Park changed the w rivers. So they reintroduced wolves into the park. Just for a lot of them, what do they think then? Just for just just uh just to see what would happen. Now the deer population had had built up, right? So they brought in these natural problems. Predators which then obviously predated on the on the deers. The deers then changed their behaviour and because they were no longer eating the the grass down by the riverbank, that that grass turned into little tree saplings, the tree saplings did root, and then the rivers ended up meandering in a different direction because of these. So it was how this kind of introduction of of a species had changed the whole landscape of Yellowstone National Park. And it was quite cool.

SPEAKER_01

We've seen The Simpsons where Bart introduces toads into Australia. You can see what happens.

SPEAKER_00

Nomination? So do I pick from my top five? Because my honourable mention was Rainier Wolfcastle from The Simpsons. Yeah. Who might not be as profoundly important as, you know, saving Yellowstone, but to me as you know, we always like to get a Simpsons one in there. Yeah, so Rainier Willcastle's my num.

SPEAKER_01

Nice. Okay, I'm going for Oz. Anyone know where he's from?

SPEAKER_00

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Seth Green.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. He plays in the band maconic vampire. Ding Dingo's Ate My Baby, and he is like the real like polar opposites of like he's a wolf or werewolf, sorry, but he's also like completely stoic, like almost mute character who doesn't it's completely calm. He dates Willow. It's my favourite period of Buffy when they're together. And it's not like American werewolf where he gets mauled on the North Yorkshire Wars, he gets bit by his toddler cousin, I think. A toddler just bites him, and that's where he gets it from. And they have strict guidelines for how to deal with his werewolf problem. So three days before and three days after the new moon, he is caged in the library in the school. But he does eventually get out and cause there's another werewolf comes to town called Veruka, I think. And that goes Pete Tong. He ends up leaving town to try and get over it, and he goes to I think some Tibetan monks, and then he's able to, through the power of I guess, meditation or whatever, not transform until he comes back to town and he sees Willow, who is now dating Tara Tara, yeah, that's about it. Um he sees them together and he fucking loses it again, and I think he kills someone.

SPEAKER_00

Might still be a report of like no not November. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um he was great, he was really cool. I really liked Seth Green. Like he never hit these highs again, I don't think, really.

SPEAKER_00

Robot checking.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and Dr. Evil's son scap. It was quite funny, but not as like F exist, so yeah, Oz from Buffy the Vampir Slayer. We need two more nominations from our uh two more howling wolves. Let us know what you're putting in. So we have we're in the midst of in Jersey like a mighty Scorsese season at the local masterplex, haven't we? Yeah, is Shakespeare's either been on or it's going to be on.

SPEAKER_02

I think this one's been on. It's the Wolf of Wall Street, obviously, because we're in Wolf Street. Casinos tomorrow. You're going to go and check that out. But I think they have done Wolf of Wall Street. This would be a cracker to go and see on the big screen.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I didn't the first time round. I think I saw it. I didn't realise, I think I was so far in I guess into parenting that I didn't actually realise this was a Scorsese movie the first time around. Oh really? Yeah. Like when it I knew by the time I saw it, I knew that it was right. I didn't know there was like a new C film. Yeah. Of course, like it's the nth film collaboration he's done with Leo. Leo. And it's the story of Jordan Belfort and his rise to making a billion trillion pounds every day.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and just off the bat, I really like DiCaprio in this one. I think he's he's He sells it well. Yeah, he does sell it well.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's a long one, so let's not like go into the nitty-grissy of like every fucking bit of it.

SPEAKER_02

No, it is based on a true story, as you said. Pussly stuff, but it's loose loosely based. And there's some brilliant kind of cameos in there, him joining.

SPEAKER_01

But the very first scene we see, and I it might not be the but the the It's the dwarf, the little people being thrown at the target. Yeah. And then it flashes to then how he starts out. So we see the level of debauchery and like outrageous behaviour that they get up to in the office first, and then it takes it back to him with his his original partner.

SPEAKER_00

So there's a scene, then there's a voiceover with tons of exposition in the first half of now, and that didn't give it away to either it's a Scorsese.

SPEAKER_01

No, I mean I when I saw it, I knew it was a Scorsese, but I just didn't know when people were talking about it, I didn't know it was a Scorsese movie there. But by the time I got to see it, I didn't know. But yeah, there is all that stuff. So obviously when he starts out, he What's his job before he goes into Wall Street?

SPEAKER_00

Is he even doing anything? I think we're on the same as is his is his first day and he's just done his seniors whatever exam and he meets.

SPEAKER_01

First of all, he's just get he's just in the door, isn't he? And the guy's going, You're lower, you're worse than Ponscum, you're nothing. And you I you didn't quite know if he was. But he should say yes, uh three batteries. And then he gets led through the office to and he's like, Your job is to fucking just just dial the phone to anyone, get me, get me connect to people, just you know, you can't do anything, you're not allowed to do anything until you do your exam, you're scum, and just like getting berated by this guy. And then it turns out that this guy is whilst he's a higher up than Jordan Belfort, he answers to Matthew McConaughey. Yeah. Matthew McConaughey? Yeah. So he's starting to learn the dynamics, and he says, like, just straight away from day one, he was like hooked on it. It's the way that they talk to each other, the sort of energy in the office, the fucking bullshit that's going on. And well, that's it. He's a he's a McConnell takes a shine term and says, Right, I'll take it. Because he he sort of stands up for himself and answers back, you know, gives a bit of shit out. He's like, Well, we'll go to lunch. You're having lunch with me.

SPEAKER_02

Great scene. It is a it is a great scene. He's giving him the tips on how to survive in this world.

SPEAKER_01

Um you've got to basically go wank twice a day.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he's going, How many times you jerk off? And he goes, Well, what you know, he's really uncomfortable with it. He's already said I love water instead of like a vodka tonic or whatever McConnell who's drinking. He's doing coke at the table. He's doing yeah, doing doing lines at the table. And um, how many times do you jerk off? And he goes, you know, a couple of times a week. They're rookie numbers, you've got to get your you've got to get your numbers right up if you want to make it in this game. You know, he's saying, you know, I'll be four, five, six times a day, or whatever it is.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. That's my my favourite part of that whole movie is is that interaction because the sort of sound effects in the way the McConaughey just does all these little he starts doing his weird ad-lib to the stuff. So a lot of it, the famous punch I don't like punch my desk, but you know, that's that was his warm-up. Right. But I genuinely believe that that, you know, but seven minute perhaps interaction saves Matthew McConaughey's career because up until that point he wasn't really getting much. And then after that, he was getting a lot of stuff, and I think he just sort of through not even acting to the script, he showed off his chops quite a lot. Just show you how cool he is.

SPEAKER_01

And he sort of explains how it works. And Jordan Belfort's still like he's so green, he's thinking, Oh, we're just trying to do this for the clients. It's like, well, you know, the clients might make some money, but it gives a fuck because we just take that and reinvest that, and and every time we do, I think we're making commission. So it's uh it's all it's on nothing.

SPEAKER_00

It's all doesn't exist.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, their money is like what they might get next week. You're getting this now. You're pulling out these kind of figures, you're getting your commission right now, and that's what we're getting.

SPEAKER_01

And as soon as he pretty much starts and gets his like it might even be his first day after his exam, it's he's it just says it flashes up with the date, and you might not necessarily know the date off the top of your head, but they tell us straight away it's the big crash, stock market crash. And they lay in everyone's laid off. I think they the firm just goes that day, doesn't it? Like McConnell looks at the screen and goes, fuck.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And they're there's just gone. And he's out of work.

SPEAKER_02

And he's still optimistic, he's still young, he's he's still got a desire to become, you know, the the man that he wants to be.

SPEAKER_01

He's pitching to his wife that he'll he could do some sort of site job outside of what she's like, you don't want to you're not gonna go and do that. And then she spots in the in the back of a small print docks. This this place that's still trading, and he's like, in this economy? Penny stock. So he goes along and it's Spike Jones that he meets there. And it it's like it's in a stripmore sort of thing, it's just guys in like trackies and Polish that's disgusting.

SPEAKER_00

I love that like when it shows up for the interview and he's got the you know the the foot in the time. It just reminds me of the in-between us, like the the guy who was on his first day with the briefcases. I was like, wow, yeah, you're you're you're in the wrong crowd here, mate.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they they can't believe you know what he actually does once he's got the chance because he can sell, you know, well they sort of explained it to him, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_01

He says, because obviously he's an actual Wall Street guy, albeit he'd only been there, you know, a very short amount of time. And they're saying, Yeah, well, we sell these stocks, you know, there's this one, and and spite he can't even like get the name right, and they flash up a shot of where the business ended, it's just some guy's shed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's like Aerodine Yeah, yeah, it sounds a bit terminatory, didn't it?

SPEAKER_01

And he says, Well, he says, Yeah, whatever we sell, you know, we're able to sell onto these guys, we take fifty percent. He's like, Well, well, hang on a minute. You're telling me I sell ten thousand worth of this stock, I keep five thousand of that. And I'm like, Yeah. I used to take I used to take one percent, now I take fifty, and you can see that shape, that's a game changer for him.

SPEAKER_00

Well the guy says, If if you can sell five thousand dollars worth of these socks, I will take outside and blow you myself or something.

SPEAKER_01

So immediately like he's on the phone, and it's just you know, these are sales power. But it but they're adverts in like titmags and you know, these are just like absolutely hoodwinking idiots and like these completely blowing their mortgage payments on on crap stocks. And he just sells this it's got a techie sounding name. He just says to this guy on the he gets this guy on the phone that this has got military applications, it's gonna be sold, you know, in all likelihood it was gonna be sold to the government for military and all this. And and then you can see everyone just crowding around the desk, it's like listening in, going, Holy shit, this is this guy can do. And I think he he convinces the guy to do four grand or something like that. Yeah, and he just from then builds it and builds it. One phone call, he's made two grand, he is like boom.

SPEAKER_00

So I I don't know, I I might I had to talk to my wife, it's like, okay, Bobby, but if if you've got this gonna move, it's like fucking make it six.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Bobby. There you go, that's it. And and all the time as he's he's building his kind of reputation within the firm, he's getting other people in, and there's salesmen who have started out in the penny stocks as well, and he realizes I've I need to go out onto my own and do this. And it's soon after this, he's he's rolls up in his his nice new car. He's just in a diner, isn't he? Yeah, he meets Donnie Donnie, who recognized him from his building, and he goes, What what do you do as a job if you don't mind me asking? He goes, Oh, I saw stocks, how much did you make? And he goes, Well, I made like I don't know, eighty thousand dollars last month or something. He goes, You made eight thousand? Fuck off. Uh he goes, You live in the same building as me. Like, I've seen you, there's no way you're making. He goes, Well, show you you do that, I'll quit my job right now, I'll come work for you. Next thing he's on the phone, isn't it? He's on the phone. He's called me up here. Hey, Paulie. And and you see these two just connect, they're they're absolute, you know, just mad men.

SPEAKER_01

There's a little flash forward and he and they're in a bar and he says, I just want to, you know, I hear stuff, you know. It's like I don't really like pay attention to it normally, but you know, it's like really like a bit sheepish, but it goes, This stuff about you and your cousin.

SPEAKER_02

Oh no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, because the narration takes over, doesn't it? He goes, I'd I'd heard that he kind of married his cousin, and he goes, So just trying to clear it. He goes, No, it's it's it's like my my mum, her her brother's kid is his daughter. Yeah, she grew up hot, yeah. Your cousin, but she grew up hot, and why let somebody else fuck my cousin? It's like disrespectful, no. Are you worried about but the kids?

SPEAKER_00

We have two kids, we have two kids, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And we're not worried about the retarded thing.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, no, they're fine. Otherwise, I'll just kind of drive them off somewhere and leave them there and say you're free now. So, yeah, really kind of just crazy fucking guards.

SPEAKER_01

Those teeth are he says that his first thing is his fucking tombstone white teeth and his crazy clobber that he wears. And straight away they start making you know loads of money on this stuff. So I think Donnie treats him to like having to go on the crack pipe. That's his thank you. And immediately they need to expand the operation so he gets in his his old like mob, you know, yeah, his friend's dog mob whoever. So he'll and it very quickly he realizes how to turn it into a machine, so he gives them a script.

SPEAKER_02

This is how you do the fucking sales, you know, and it's all about just being on the phone being like super enthusiastic, but obviously bullshitting, but just American sales, you know, they just convince you that you know while he's doing it, he's he's sort of middle fingers up to the phone telling the the guys, yeah, you should buy and they're they're laughing their heads off in the background. And as soon as they make the sale and he puts down his phone, I'm gonna get my people to talk to your people, we're gonna get that close straight away. They're pissing themselves laughing because they know they're ripping people off, they give zero fucks about it, and they're able to then create this new firm and it with his brand and his marketing called was it West Point Stratton Oakmont. Stroke Stratton Oakmont.

SPEAKER_01

It's doing that sort of monetized scene where you have the sell me this pen, but where this is when John Burnthor comes in and he's like this is when he's all trying to like really weaponise the sales system, and he's like, You need to sell me this pen, and none of them can do it. And John Burnthor's like, I need you to fucking write down your name for me. And it's just like that's how you do it. You know, you just you create a demand, create a demand, you know, create urgency, you know, and they're like, Oh, okay, wow. And yeah, then you get a little montage of the office grows and it grows, and you got 10 people, 50 people, 100 people, and then it you straight into the just absolutely fucking like horrendous debauchery.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's important to point out at this stage that this film has a lot of montages in it, and it's stole nearly four hours long. Yeah. Imagine if it didn't have the montages.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's this I guess sometimes they're working, but sort of reminded me of the old days of where I used to work when Friday afternoons were like not to this extent, but they were it wasn't month end drinks, it was Friday drinks basically from lunchtime. But here they have dwarf tossing competitions, strippers just entering the building, shaving women's shaving.

SPEAKER_02

Shaving shaving heads for money, what whatever helps keep morale up and just the crazy alpha sales system going.

SPEAKER_01

He talks about in the news, doesn't it? I mean, we for the very first time well, when you see him at the start, he's driving a Ferrari and he says about who's making at this point in the peak 47 million. Which is pissed off about 47 million a year, which is pissed off because it's three shy aboutty nine million is three million less than a million a week.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I feel those troubles.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. So he has to start putting a bit more structure around it, so he he sort of hires his dad to do some sort of admin role in the work. See who that was?

SPEAKER_00

You told me this and it's due in my head and I can't remember right now. My fucking name's gonna have my head now. And most of what that guy did was not descripted.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's Rob Rayner. Yeah. Oh of course, yeah, yeah. But all the while, so he's it the parties sort of go more and more, and they have a big party in it might be his gaff, in his summer house or in anyway, it's some big fucking mansion by the sea. And he's he's spoken about how much he fucking loves drugs, and they've got this drug that they're doing at this time called Quaaludes, and he they do point out in the film that they don't get this anymore, and he sort of sort of like has a it's like ah so you fuckers are all missed out as in the audience.

SPEAKER_02

You missed out on this. But what one of the things just before that that worth mentioning is how he kind of gets famous. He has this interview, doesn't he? He thinks it's going really much. Oh, the Wall Street, and that's how he gets New York Times or something, yeah. They just point him out as he's a he's a real son of a bitch this guy, he doesn't care about anyone, but the publicity then brings every trader to him, realises they're all in it for themselves as well. So his CVs are just coming out over the um People are begging to work there. People are begging to work there, and it's it's a brilliant kind of bit of PR for him, even though it was a bad thing.

SPEAKER_01

But they have so they have their business meetings where to sort of aid in the creative process, they take a load of quaaludes and they're having one of these meetings whilst there's a massive party going on at the summer house with the Steve Madden. She's maddened, and they have this idea of one thing that could give them a bit more credibility if they start doing proper Wall Street stuff, so doing IPOs, doing all this sort of shit. And Donnie, it turns out, went to high school with this guy, Steve Madden, who is a very successful but privately owned company making shoes. So they're gonna that's the idea they have, but all the while, and then downstairs Margot Robbie appears on the arm of this fucking douchebag guy at this party, and he's like fucking flies around shit, like Jordan's straight down there, schmoozing it with his wife just outside.

SPEAKER_00

Doesn't Donnie actually get his normal.

SPEAKER_01

So, first of all, he's like you could tell he's like totally into her, and he's just chatting up. She was obviously taken with him because he's a fairly superficial, and this other guy's just like what the fuck? Yeah, he's trying to drag her out of it.

SPEAKER_02

Talking directly to her, he's he totally into the water.

SPEAKER_01

And then Don't so Donnie's wife comes in and says to Jordan, your wife, your wife needs some help with the blood, and he's like, in a minute, yeah, in a minute, he's like what wife? And then she looks like for Don't just wanking them. She's so What the fuck, Donnie?

SPEAKER_00

She's so home.

SPEAKER_02

So she's been like fucking kicking him onto the floor. And that's it, in a party room, uh party full of people, he's just having a w a wank right there looking at her.

SPEAKER_01

Um by his clearly prosthetic penis there, I think. Yeah. Cut to dinner with Naomi and Jordan. Yeah. And he says, She said, Oh, I'm surprised that you asked me out anyway, given that you're married. And he's like, What, married people can't have friends? And she said, We're not going to be friends. Yeah. And then he gives her a ride home and she's just got a fucking very, very, let's say, micro with her stockings on, and he's just like, Oh my god, and she's then like announces that she designs a lingerie, and he just like couldn't be harder at this point.

SPEAKER_00

But then it finds out he really could have been harder.

SPEAKER_01

Because she she goes to slip into something a little more comfortable, which is absolutely nothing. Uh and he said, I fucked her brains out, pause four or eleven seconds. I was thinking that sounds pretty good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And my film only about one nineteenth of the rate of the moon at this point.

SPEAKER_01

Obviously, that you know, that sort of blossoms into these sort of things, and it does get caught out. Sniffing coke off her tits in a limo where his wife opens the door and she's less than thrilled about that arrangement.

SPEAKER_02

And then that's the end of his wife and his relationship, but he continues with her and eventually.

SPEAKER_01

Well, there's a whirlwind romance they he proposes and they they go to Vegas on his stagdo. He does say what he's spent on the stagdew. It's a like a crazy amount. And they show you they show you the flight over.

SPEAKER_02

It's just mean by the Including like the whole refurbishment of a hotel. A whole floor. A whole floor, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And he has to have two penicillin shots when he comes back for the so he can uh consummate the the marriage.

SPEAKER_00

When he sort of regains a bit of clarity and and Dawny's feed out by what he did in his own. No, that's that's on the flight later on.

SPEAKER_01

Is that the last one? He has to be restrained in the sea. He's he buys her a wedding gift, Naomi, which he has to take away from the wedding to show her, and it's like sons don't make boats this fucking thing. It's like oh god no, it's like an Abramovich style super yacht, it's absolutely fucking ridiculous. She's pretty happy with it.

SPEAKER_02

He's like that one outside um that sent Owens by the other. Do you know who that was? Um wasn't it Joe Lewis? Joe Lewis, yeah, the Spurs guy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna swim out to it and tell him something fucking prick.

SPEAKER_02

Oi! Oi, he's still losing. What's going on?

SPEAKER_01

In the background of all of this, you've also had Kyle Chandler knocking about as a D. Patrick Denham. He's at FBI. FBI. There's also the SEC, they they just turn up all the time because they're it's known pretty much that this is Yeah. I mean, his wife went before he's cheating or his wife, she's saying, you know, this sounds like a little bit too good to each other, it probably is. You know, is this he's like, well, it's pretty illegal, not sure.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's maybe ethically a little bit wrong, and she's not even comfortable with that, going full-blown illegal, which is what he's doing now, and and sort of tax evasion and Yeah, he explains John Burnthor, who is an actual drug dealer, not John Burnthor, his character is just to be clear about that before I ellicate myself.

SPEAKER_01

He's his character is a drug dealer. He's also what do they call them? Rat holes or rat hole, you hate the money. He he holds the stuff, sells it on Jordan's behalf, and then just turns up with like sackfuls of cash for Jordan that's off the books that he just keeps without any sort of declaration.

SPEAKER_00

Through the movie at this point, and and they've made untold amounts of money, but what they're doing at that point isn't actually illegal, and it's there's a sort of tipping point around there where they start This is the layering, yeah. They start doing illegal things when they have no need to. Yeah, no.

SPEAKER_01

That's when the FBI comes out of his boat and stuff, and you realize it's a sort of the greed really gets them at this point where you know Well, he's got John Favreau as a a lawyer character, and he's got another guy as a kind of lawyer slash fixer, and there's like you know, you can just you're legit now, you can buck all that stuff off, but he he just can't go over addicted to the lifestyle at all. He could but he could still have the lifestyle now, they could just go legit and still be mega wealthy, but it's the hustle and the fucking the lifestyle and the hustle, yeah. Um and it it even gets to the point where it's a super arsehole. John Favreau saying, you know, you need they really on their case, they they get visits, they get the visits by the FBI onto the boat where he tries to bribe them. Yeah, throwing lobster at him, saying you're never gonna earn the amount of money I've got. He's got two prostitutes for them, yeah. And he said, and when they say no, he's like, right, well, I'm gonna have her lit caveat off my balls or something. And after that, John Faber's like, look, what you need to do, just you go to the SEC, you make a deal, you know, they'll fine you fucking shitloads, you still end up with loading money. Then you're not a big ticket for the FBI, they'll fuck off, probably. And that's your best shot of this, otherwise they're just gonna keep coming after you till they get you. And his old man's like, Look, you know, like in a sort of father-to-son chat, he's like, You're already fucking super rich, you know. What's the point of going to prison? All that sort of shit. I did really enjoy the scene where they explain how his old man's got a fucking real temper on him, and someone just phones and he's like, For fuck's sake, who's fucking phoned in the house on a Tuesday night? And he's like, Hello, yeah, puts on his telephone voice.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So they do arrange this, and this has been memed a million times where he calls, you know, an all office meeting where he like a town hall where he stands up in front of the hall. And he's gonna announce he's leaving. And he he does announce he's gonna see the whole thing, and he there's the lady there that he'd appointed like dead early on, and he'd he'd given her a load of money at the start so that she could pay all her son's tuition. He's like, Oh, and he he seems sort of genuinely like emotional about it. And then there's his he sort of talks himself out of it and he goes, and he's you sort of and everyone sort of looking around and he goes, I'm not fucking leaving.

SPEAKER_00

Because they all realise that's then that gets to the most like lord of the flies, you know, just total carnage.

SPEAKER_02

They realise they're all gonna be richer again for the next year or so.

SPEAKER_01

No one would be able to take because he's saying, Oh Donnie can take the reins, but it's not Donnie's not gonna be able to take the reins to the extent that you know what he's been able to achieve.

SPEAKER_00

And in my memory, this is about the time when Steve Madden comes into the picture.

SPEAKER_01

Well, there was the IPO, so that was further illegality because they secretly owned 85% of the shares, but still held by Steve Madden, so they must have had a side arrangement because once it all starts going Pete Tom, Steve Madden is just ditching all the stock and trying to get his money out, which is what causes it to sort of go a bit fucking awry. We also get introduced to Joanna Lumley. She plays Naomi's auntie. Well, we meet her actually at the wedding and he comes up to speech her and he's got like obviously got a coke under his nose and says, Oh, been been getting involved with the donuts, haven't we? And he's like, She goes, Don't worry, I grew up in the 60s, it's fine. And so she is used as a as a way to stash money in a Swiss bank account under her name. So that he's got like a decent amount of money just out of the audience.

SPEAKER_02

Decent, it's just obscene amounts of money, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Well they have to do there's a whole sequence of doing the the money runs, and it's John Bernthal's wife and family that have to strap all the money to themselves and in suitcases or whatever. Because otherwise it was going to be something like fifty trips. They managed to do it in about seven trips.

SPEAKER_00

Because I bit I love this scene with the Swiss banker. Listen, you arrogant American piece of shit, it's like fuck you, you're French around the monkey.

SPEAKER_01

He's he's told that as long as he it's not in the name So the reason it's in Joanna Lombie's name is because she's not guilty of doing anything, so they would never have to you know declare anything to the American authorities if it was in his name and the crimes that he you know the money's been done through illegal trades and blah blah. They would still the even the Swiss would still have to you know let the Americans know about that.

SPEAKER_02

The Swiss are explaining how to to circumnavigate all the financial fair play rules and everything, and he's got people in able to do that, so it it's all going swimmingly well up until again the moment that it's not there's one scene with her on the bench in the park, more more telephone communication. Is she coming on to me? And and he goes, I fucking think and he moves in, and then you hear her afterwards going, You see he coming on to me? Let's just keep this professional, just make my my niece happy.

SPEAKER_01

You you can you you yeah, you look after my niece, I'll look after the money, don't worry about it, I'll sort it out for you until so the net you know it does start to close in on him because they're just living fast and and wild. And Naomi comes in crying and he's like, What's up? And Auntie's snuffed it from a heart attack out of the blue, and he's like obviously devastated because of the money, and she is the sole signatory on all of this account, and this they're on there, they're actually on their I'm not you kind of call it a yacht, like massive fucking l cruise liner they've got, and he's like, Right, we need to go to Switzerland right now. Like, right now we've got to go. And he's saying to the captain, we've got to go, and he's like, There's a massive chop. No, he says it's a bit of chop. He says a bit of chop. He's like, and Donnie's wife's like, Well, I don't fancy that. He's like, No, it's fine, it's fine. Isn't it fine? He's captain, it's fine, we've got we gotta go, we've got to go. And he's like, I suppose we could like batten down the hatches, and you know, it might be you know, might a few plates might smash, he says, and it's like a few plates, who cares? It's fine, let's go, and cut to the perfect storm, and the whole thing it's it's horrible. The one bit when the the captain, I think he calls in a Mayday and there's like a 40 foot fucking wave they're about to go over, and it's like it like the wave smashes the wind the the window at the front.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like it's completely fucking KO'd the boat. Cause I love we've missed a bit where John Berenthal and Jonah Howell have the fight in the car park.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was like just before this one. Just before it's like it's part of the same sort of thing. That's how he yeah, because they hate each other.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And Donnie's gonna launder still needs to launder his money through this.

SPEAKER_00

And pressure to this day, Jonah Howell still hates John Berenthal because actually hut him. I think everyone hates Jonah Hill though.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I think he's quite hated. Yeah. I saw an interview with a guy who does the voice of thingy from How to Train Your Dragon, and he's just openly just like pans about, he's a fucking horrible bastard.

SPEAKER_02

Which is a shame because I really want to like him for this film, and he did that brilliant debut, the retrol debut um the skateboarding one.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Midnight, yeah. Yeah, which was a fantastic movie.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, the it's all going uh starts to unravel. So John Burnthor he does time, but he doesn't grass anything up, he does three months inside. They the the fucking cruise liner actually sings and they have to be rescued by the Italians, I think. And that's the cut you're saying that's like kind of an ending of the film.

SPEAKER_00

It could be you know, there are many endings in this movie, and I think it's a it's a trope with Scorsese. He's never quite figured out how to properly end a film. The fact that most of his gangster movies are based loosely on some kind of real people helps, but in this one, you know, Jonathan Melford had a lot of input in the script, so it's like I feel like there there are at least four endings in this film, and that's definitely one of them.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so that's the boat gone. Because they're going there because the the Swiss banker guy says, Well, she might be dead, but we can just get someone to forge her signature before, you know, the news of her being dead like basically hits. Yeah. And we can still get your money out for you transferring to someone else's name. It'll find a way for you. So that that goes awry. But he gets he also then gets a phone call from Well it it's all the police all get wind of it because of the John Bertha thing in the in the parking lot. So so it's basically Donnie who starts to really fuck it all up. He does that. So he's high on Trump, so then he comes in and and into the office and he's and there's this sort of mythical batch of quaaludes called lemons that that had been taken out of circulation a long time ago. But some client of Donnie's has had some in his safe and he's got a load of them. So they're gonna sit down one evening and do those. So they take one, nothing, must be a dud, or they must have you know gone past their sell by date or whatever, to take another, take another couple. You're in trouble now, aren't you?

SPEAKER_00

He gets to he gets a bit where he sort of explains a methodology of taking queer loose, or it's like you've got to get to sleep to a bit and then do a bit of that and go over it and get okay.

SPEAKER_01

He makes himself sick, he gives himself some enema because he's like, I don't want anything fucking with my high, he says. But he gets a call saying, Don't talk on this phone, but come and speak to me from his fixed guy, not the John Favreau one, but the other dude. So he goes to his country club, and as he's on the phone, he just starts talking gibberish, and it, you know, these qualos have started to hit. And the guy's like, your home phone, your work phone, everything is bugged, don't fucking say you know, anything. And he's and then he gets a call from Naomi saying, because he's left Donnie back at his house, and he gets a call from Naomi saying, Donnie's on the phone like he's gone mental, he's on the phone to someone, he's like, Oh fuck. I can't and he's on the phone to the Swiss banker, like just on a bugged phone, just fucking sort of giving it, but he can't talk well enough, but he's saying enough stuff that it could be.

SPEAKER_00

This is the scene where you see it from his perspective, but you can't find well first.

SPEAKER_01

You see him crawl, like either the physical performances.

SPEAKER_00

You see the first one first is like I drove forward and I was fine, and it shows you.

SPEAKER_01

You still see him crawl and get in the car. You still see him it's only the car driver you get two versions of. You see him crawl, it takes ages, and he gets in the car and manages to get he says, By some miracle I got home unscathed. And then and then so he sort of has to sort of fight Donny to get the phone off him to get him to hang up the phone, and he's just like comedically all tangled in the wires. And then Donnie starts to choke and Naomi can't save him, so he has to come along and it just sort of like pounds on his chest until eventually he spits up this bit of ham. And then do they bundle him off? They say the police turn up and they and they say, But you know, no, he wakes up on the couch, doesn't he? He just flops down the couch, then he wakes up with the police there and they say, Oh, you need to come with us. Did you drive last night? And he's like, What do you mean? See the state of the car, and then he he remembers fucking my wife every time I wake up after being out drunk.

SPEAKER_00

Like which one of these was I when I came out?

SPEAKER_01

So they they arrest him for that and he's taken in and he's like, Listen, we've got you banked rights on fucking everything, so you need to cooperate with us, Corb and you're fucked. So you're gonna wear a wire, you're gonna go in and you're gonna we just take the whole crew basically, and then you there'll be a bit of leniency, but you know you've got to cooperate. So he he goes back to the office with his wire on. And whilst he's talking to Donny, he just like peels back a a napkin and says, Don't incriminate yourself, I'm wearing a wire. And so Donny's a bit like fuck, he's like it's game over, but also needs to be careful what I say. And that meaning, kind of like he doesn't incriminate himself. The next day at home, the FBI like denim turns up and he just waves the little note saying he's like fucked, yeah, completely fucked in here. It was a bad moment. Yeah. He also still has time before he goes inside to be a real horrible fucking bastard and knock his wife around. So he fucks her or he he tries to and she says, Go on then, fuck me, fuck me, fuck me, and he's like, does another like 11-second job and he said that's the last time I'm fucking want to divorce, you're out, and I'm taking the kids, and that enraged him, so he goes through and fucking whacks her in the dress room, takes the daughter in the car, but fucking crashes the car. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, the whole narrative of the film is about you know, it's kind of it's all been fun and games and a little bit.

SPEAKER_02

But there's no making light of that kind of stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but he you know, he's like in prison and then it cuts to because that you could end the movie there with that stuff. But no, he does I think he does three years, maybe. Yeah, well he's quite serious and he's Well actually they get him filming an infomercial, don't they? This is really shit. He's doing this really shit info mercial for like the Jordan Belfort Academy of he'll teach you how to be a salesman type thing. So they pick him up. I think he does three years, something like that. It's not a long, really long time, and it's you know He does it in the sort of country club present as well.

SPEAKER_00

Not the hardcore present.

SPEAKER_01

Good lawyers. And then we cut to him in it's in New Zealand and some guy being up, the best salesman that's there's ever been, you know, blah blah here's Jordan Belfort, and he comes out to this sort of crowd of wannabe guys and says it just goes up to the first guy who says, Right, I won't you just sell me this pen? And he does this the pen sale thing to three people. No one does what John Burnthall has managed to do, and it just kind of cuts, and you're like, okay, then the final end.

SPEAKER_02

That's the final end. That's that's the final end. Yeah, I mean, for a a story obviously there's lots of those comedic bits in it that take away from the serious settings.

SPEAKER_01

It's weighted I would say 90% in terms of like the debauchery and the fun that they have.

SPEAKER_02

Which is what you want to watch a movie about, I I think around this, you you want to have fun. Yeah, I shouldn't afford it. And I've loved those maybe not. And it's not it's not as interesting to you know, it's not a hard drama and things where this is really serious and look, this is what went wrong. It's it's about, you know, almost yeah, they did some really bad shit and they ripped off loads of people, including people that have saved all their lives. But we just get to call those people stupid because you're looking at this guy who's ripping them off and he's doing, you know, telling them to fuck off on the on the phone and everything, uh as much as he's being nice to him, and you find it funny and the way that it's done. When it actually becomes a true story, obviously it's like that's fucking bad. And and it's only right at the end there you actually maybe have that little window of that's what it actually really was like. You know, the his consequences, and he was an arsehole here, you know. He's like an arsehole the whole time. He was an arsehole the whole time, but it softens that. It still is, I would imagine, allegedly. Yeah, I would think so, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, he he he still does those sort of sell me a pen courses, he makes a lot of money now legitimately through what Martin Roscoe says he basically made in the best PR advert every yeah probably through that and after dinner speaking and all that sort of shit.

SPEAKER_01

Like who's the guy, Nick Lisa did the bearings bank? Yeah, he does and made some fucking fortune. If it's supposed to be a cautionary tale, I don't think it's necessarily that successful as as doing that. I think I think there'll be loads I think a lot of the audience of this film will watch it and enjoy like all the fun stuff that they get up to and then they'll probably just turn it off when it gets starts to remain.

SPEAKER_00

I get that, you couldn't you couldn't make that a cautionary tale because the the the hallmark of a good cautionary tale is something you can relate to. And I can't relate to being a multimillionaire who suddenly decides to commit fraud and cheat on my multiple wives. It's not you know it's not a tale I need cautioned on because I'm never going to be in that situation.

SPEAKER_01

I think probably people probably look at it not all people, but as like aspirational, they want to want to live that fucking life like all those traders that were turning up on the doorstep, they fucking loved it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, when you realise the the slap on the wrist they essentially get for getting away with what they got away with, you're thinking, Wow, it's only really greed, as it shows in the film that that didn't mean he could have stopped at maybe a hundred million pounds in the bank and lived his his life completely free, and it makes you wonder how many people actually have done that and just managed to stop before.

SPEAKER_00

Well that new guy it's it's the same as you know going to the bookies every day, it's it's an addiction space, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

And um what we didn't talk about was the really famous scene of when he's pissed off. It's your favourite scene in the whole movie. I think the night before he's been with the Dominatrix because if you see he's got a candle up his ass and she's dripping back and he's fallen asleep at home saying her name. She's got a name which could be a country or something, it's like Phoenix or something like that, it could be a place from somewhere. So he's sort of able to argue it, and then Naomi's just there with you know the short skirt and her legs spreads, and she's sort of saying Jim, you're not gonna you're gonna see this, and you think, Oh, he's getting absolutely done here, and then he's like points to the CCTV camera with the bear.

SPEAKER_02

The two the two security guys are watching this. I'm looking at these guys, look at these guys.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like that scene, if such records existed, would would overtake Sharon Storm with it with a leg crossing. I think that's probably the most rewound part of a movie now. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like she's absolute knockout. It's just two holidays. I mean, Leo's looking good here, good performance. I did enjoy I did enjoy this. It's far too long, I would say. I've got take the Chris Benzive vibe here. It's it doesn't need to be nearly three hours long, this film.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I I watched it the same way I watched the Irishman. I watched it as three one hour specials. Okay. I watched it as a three-parter. Because it's got very definitive sort of you know, it's not got like uh start, beginning, middle end, it's got sort of act one, act two, act three. So you can you know there's a definite sort of click your fingers, stop there, start it.

SPEAKER_02

Irishman that the same way. Yeah, I'm going to see casino tomorrow at the cinema. I think that's another two, three hours.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Two and a half, three hours. So oh the baseball bat at the end is gonna be loud on the it's gonna be uh loud as uh just fucking heading the vice, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

All that kind of crazy. They missed out one of the best scenes in the the Moof of Wall Street, which is when they come home and the gay butler's been having a gang and one was right here where he's like and they're hanging out, hanging about the the building.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they go for most stuff. Yeah, I mean that's it, it's made up of all feel cussing all it's made up of loads of of really good little montages, good little scenes and things. Your point there where watching up until the shit starts kind of tumbling down is probably where I switched it off a little bit later than that, which I that's why I said to you I didn't watch the the probably the the last quarter of the movie this time. I've seen it a couple of times before, but yeah, certainly the the bits where things are going well, life is looking good, and he's actually winning with the most enjoyable bits, even though he's been an absolute arsehole with them all. Um don't know what that says about me. Uh I I still enjoyed it. Still a good movie.

SPEAKER_00

It's a good movie, it's an enjoyable movie.

SPEAKER_02

I probably won't now watch it for a good few years. It's ticked off for me.

SPEAKER_00

If you have it, you can enjoy as much watching sort of YouTube shots about it as you can.

SPEAKER_01

Oscar Noms, best pitcher, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, Jonah Hill, and best adapted screenplay, and it won none. It's because win that year, do you know? Other things. Other things, yeah. I didn't mean that, yeah, to be honest with you.

SPEAKER_00

Um the actual thing that won, or you just say other things won.

SPEAKER_01

What 'cause what year was it? Not that I wouldn't know.

SPEAKER_00

It's it's longer ago than any.

SPEAKER_01

Quest.

SPEAKER_02

That's what in somebody's nose, they're shouting now, they know what it was. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But um what are you saying?

SPEAKER_02

I would say still a strong recommend. Yeah, I seriously say a strong recommend. I I particularly liked you know five or six scenes here, instantly quotable. I'm gonna try and keep my numbers up and I agree.

SPEAKER_00

It's definitely one of those have to watch it. If you can watch it without having heard anything about it, it'd be better, but it's definitely a must-watch.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Strong.

SPEAKER_01

Another well, wolf week, what do you reckon? This is pretty good. It's pretty good. But that is another week. Done and dusted. We probably will have Riggs and No, Riggs have my thing's been for two weeks, actually. Is he? Yeah, okay. Chris Chris will be. I don't know what the numbers are gonna be, don't know whose choice it's gonna be. But we'll talk signing out, like we always do. All that remains is to say tidy signing out. Dan's gone.

SPEAKER_00

Bye.
