Midweek Mention... Message from the King
This week on Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan and Cris review Message from the King, the 2016 revenge-action thriller directed by Fabrice Du Welz and starring Chadwick Boseman as Jacob King, a South African man who lands in Los Angeles with very little money, a very flimsy explanation for immigration, and one mission: find out what happened to his missing sister Bianca.
What begins as a missing-person search quickly turns into a grimy revenge story involving a horrible motel, a bag of clues, a trip to the morgue, Mediterranean gangsters, a bike chain wrapped around a fist, Tom Felton as a posh drug dealer, Luke Evans as a suspicious dentist, and Alfred Molina as a powerful Hollywood figure with a very dark secret. The dads follow Jacob as he works his way through the people who exploited Bianca, uncovering blackmail, abuse, a flash drive, a politician and a trafficked child caught in the middle of it all.
The big praise goes to Chadwick Boseman, who carries the film with quiet menace, grief and controlled violence. The lads agree that the plot is fairly generic and asks for a few leaps, especially at the airport, but it is short, nasty, gritty and satisfying enough to work. There is also plenty of appreciation for the film’s finest piece of cycling-related violence: the bike chain.
The verdict is a medium-strong recommend. Message from the King is not reinventing the revenge thriller, but it is lean, brutal and watchable, with Boseman giving the whole thing far more weight than it might otherwise have had.

I only touched I only touched a foot. You touched him. He touched touch his foot.
SPEAKER_03He touched that's a bit on camera. You're giving him a message. I'm giving you a message. I didn't touch you with a bike chain. Stroke in my hand. No, but that's the image on the poster. Yes. The bike chain man is f his fist, his clenched fist, and this is message from the king. Yeah. Chadwick Bozeman.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_032016.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Directed by Fabrice Duvelt. Aye. Sounds like a kind of South African name, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. He's Belgian.
SPEAKER_03Well, I suppose they went down there, didn't they? They were Dutch and Douglas. So yeah, I hadn't seen this before. This was on I don't know if it originated on Netflix. Yeah, distributed by Netflix. So yeah, Chadwick Bozeman. It was in distributed. I didn't really know. Yeah, so it was a Netflix joint. And he's he just well, I think we basically meet him going through customs. This happened to me going to America. A bit like you, yeah. Where he was static. He was apprehended going through passport control. Yeah. And I didn't really believe that they would actually let him through with his very, very flaky story of Yeah, six hundred dollars. I don't have anywhere to stay. I'll make it last. I don't it didn't really explain what he's doing there. I'm a taxi driver and I'm here to sightseeing. I got like I got sent into the I don't know, questioning room or whatever in LA for just I think having a beard and I don't have a beard in my passport photo. So then they you sit there for hours, and then when you get caught up, they ask you the same questions that you get at the normal desk, and then they just try and fucking intimidate you. And I'm like, We'll make him crack. So this to me, I was like, I don't think that they'd be quite so cool with him.
SPEAKER_02And and the thing is when you're in those airport rooms and and things like that, you're you're ready to crack anyway. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01It's already when you've done nothing wrong. It's like you think about oh, when I was when I about five years ago, I did this and I did that, they're gonna know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, what do they have in that database about me? Anyway, he is there to kind of track down his sister.
SPEAKER_04So he's got a sort of last known address or his sister's Bianca and she knows where she's to stay with her husband, Alex.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she goes there and immediately meets a quite foxy looking chick. She's the neighbour. Yeah, and she's like, Oh, I know you I know her, it's not around anymore. Kind of gets to meet her. Oh, listen anyway, we're having some people around later on if you want to come back.
SPEAKER_02Not before meeting her boyfriend who's none none too kind of pleased about anything, actually.
SPEAKER_03He's sort of eyeballing Chadwick, and I'm like, You better fucking back it off because he's Yeah, he's definitely bigger than you. He's he's he's pretty aggro. He's not there to he's not like aggressive, but you know he's there to like find her. Yeah. And you know, if you're not playing ball, he's probably not going to say that too kindly. So He he he then goes where she gives him So she's left this for you, a bag of um some random stuff sort of valuables, but really it's just a load of clues, I guess.
SPEAKER_04Leftover clues, yeah. Then I think he goes to the hotel. Yeah. Or motel, whatever.
SPEAKER_03The guys, it's it is a motel and it's a mingling looking place, and the first thing he says is no hookers, and you're like, Really? Here how else are you making any money this place?
SPEAKER_02So it's like literally by the hour. I guess they have to say it, right? But he he he then takes a lead from this box of clues, this bag of clues, to go to Well, she gives him a clue, she says, Oh, they're Mediterranean looking, these people that she's been knocking about with.
SPEAKER_03So he's like, Okay, mafia. And he he found a name.
SPEAKER_04I can't remember. Zico, yeah, Zico. He's Zico's boy because that's why she says Zico.
SPEAKER_03And I was thinking it's the Brazilian number ten from the 86th World Cup, but it wasn't. It didn't turn out to be him, did it? It's they would go full sopranos and they're a bunch of like Italian guys, like I think well, maybe it's Balkan guys as well. Yeah, but like sitting in sitting outside a a kind of cafe, just like minding their business until until they get royally fucking beaten up. Um this is where he gets the first bike chain.
SPEAKER_02Well no, well, no, first he just goes and he asks them they don't know. Then he goes to Well, they don't say. Yeah, he says they say they don't know. And he he goes to a uh a Korean place, a supermarket that is also in like a torn-off piece of paper in the bag, and he goes there and he asks, he's got a photo and he says, Have you seen this girl or this boy in the last you know couple of weeks or something? He goes, Look, I don't remember seeing the girl, but the boy's been here a few times. And his mum's chatting to him in Korean. Yeah. And he asks, What's the thing? So what's this is just try try the morgue? Oh key. And next thing he's in the morgue and She's there. She's there. He has a ta the same tattoo of hear no, speak no, and see no even evil. There's uh they've all got one each, his brother, yeah, his sister.
SPEAKER_03And then I think where they're from in Cape Town, there's some sort of hideous gang. Yeah, the numbers gang. The numbers gangs, and they've basically tried to flee and get her away from but basically gone out of the frying pan.
SPEAKER_02And she has kind of come over to the the US to Los Angeles. It's also funny how casual the Moore guy is.
SPEAKER_04He's like, oh, number 22, 23.
SPEAKER_03He's not making flash docks and like police credentials or something.
SPEAKER_04He's just like, yeah, come and have a look at some dead bodies if you're yeah, and then he's like, Oh yeah, and then he tell me he's not her. Mate, man, please tell me he's not her. Yeah, he's like, No, he's not her.
SPEAKER_02Because this girl was being tortured, her foot's gone, the face has been beaten, her teeth have all been taken out. I mean, she she's uh a horrifying corpse, and but he knows it is her. Yeah, reckon. And he has a bit of a breakdown outside. That's gonna get his goat up a little bit. Which which just serves the purpose for the rest of the year.
SPEAKER_04I think then he sees the photo of the Mediterranean looking guy with her at Hazard.
SPEAKER_02He he identifies when he goes back and sees the photo and another photo of her with the guy who said earlier, no, he's not seen her jog on, like he doesn't know who he's talking about.
SPEAKER_03And this is where he goes he goes biking, gets his chain, snaps it, wraps it around his fist, walks in there and just takes on the whole crew. Beats them all up. Once you've been punched in the face with a fucking pipe chain manifest, that's gonna do some damage. And then he gets the guy and he's like, Who the fuck do you work for? And he was like, I'm not saying I don't know what it was he poured something acidic he poured on him. Yeah, some chlorine or something. Yeah, because I think after he beat him up with a chain. Next time we see him, he's got his sort of face held together in some sort of plastic. Yeah, like a plastic beard. He's and he's it's a title drop because he says, Whoever you're working for, tell them this is a message from the king.
SPEAKER_02There it is, boom! Yeah. And he then goes to that party that he'd been invited to by the lady.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, when she'd earlier said we're having a few people around, it's a full-on rager, and there is all kinds of shenanigans going.
SPEAKER_02There's there's drugs and tits and and orgies and kind of bags and whatever and and and lows being haggard.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what the guy was doing with her because he seemed the reason he seemed so aggregate, her boyfriend, is because he wasn't really part of this world. No, because she's carrying on and then she's basically trying to have a threesome with Chadwick. Yeah. And then he walks in and like just and she sort of laughs a bit at him. It's like, oh, you caught me at it. And he's absolutely raging. But then the the dealer, did you recognise who the dealer was? I've uh no. Go on, tell me. I think the actor's Tom Felton, he's he's definitely Brittany. He's Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series. That's the one, yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh terrible performance in this, I thought he really hams it up. And he seems to have like an approved list, a very exclusive list of people who he will sell to. He's not just the corner one. And so these this one of these parties, I guess, where he will just go and do all of his trade and he says to them, right, you're fucking off the list, which enrages them.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because he asks, like, what's it called? Jacob. Yeah. He asks a question like, Did you sell drugs to my sister? Did you do like basically stuff that you never never ask, right? Especially if you've never met the guy. And then he's like, That's it, you're off the list, and then he goes and beats him up outside.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's it. He goes out, if our hero follows him in, the king follows him outside and beats the shit out of him in front of everybody who's come out from the party to to have a look. He takes money, he takes drugs, and and then just kind of And he gets the name, no? The d the dentist. Yeah. Yeah, he's he's got a name. And then yeah, then he's he has the card anyway, and I think does he give him the name the Duke? The Duke, I'm saying the Duke. Yeah, which is the other Which is another bad guy. He's got a phone, so he calls the Duke when he recognises that he's beaten up.
SPEAKER_04No, he's the also one of the Mediterranean guys. He's the Venus the one. Oh, his dad is. He's the biggest boss, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's he's the guy there, and he calls him and he goes, Hey, this is the Duke speaking, and he can see him as it's oh he's the one he works with the dentist. With the, you know, with the guy with just before he goes up to the dentist, which is Luke Evans, isn't it? Yeah, is he? I thought he was really bad in this. And yeah, well, he I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I to be honest, I think Luke's like they chucked a couple of Brits in and go, like, be really like do a really generic British accent because the Yang audience will love this.
SPEAKER_02Well, I think Chadwick Boseman just is on stellar form, to be honest. And he's good. He's really good. So people in the same scene as him just are not as good. Not as good.
SPEAKER_03Well, the movie has to live or die by how well he does because he's in every scene. So if he's not good, then it's gonna struggle. But he gave it if he goes to see this dentist, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_04And he's like, I'll be recommended, look at my teeth, and then he's like, Oh, you've been recommended by who? Oh, by my sister, Bianca. And I I thought the the uh the dentist play Luke plays it quite well. He because there's no emotion, right? Yeah, it makes him quite cool. He's just like, Oh yeah, I remember her, yeah, she was good, she was this, she was that. Oh, she always comes up somewhere, don't worry about it, she'll be fine. We're all for lunch, you know.
SPEAKER_02He took he took him for lunch, and then as soon as he's finished lunch, he's on to you know that he's he's deeply involved in this, and the disappearance of Bianca has something to do with him, and so does Chadwick Bozeman, the the king. He's following him and he goes to the house where he's reporting into and sort of starts speaking to another guy that we've seen Alfred Molina, yeah. Doctor Octopus in the case. Yeah, it's Dr. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I was thinking it's weird when you have to play a pedo, it must be so fucking weird.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I mean we find out a little bit later on. I mean, though it's weird from the first moment he comes in, there's this But he's blackmailing him, isn't he? Yeah, there's he's blackmailing, but also he's he breaks him down, he goes, I can tell a lot by a man through his teeth, and he's you know, he's then saying, This guy's come from South Africa, and he just gives us loads of expositions, isn't he? He sort of just lays it all on. So if it wasn't obvious to us already, yeah. If you're joining the movie halfway through, don't worry, you get you get everything. We know now that Chadrick Boseman is from the wrong side of the tracks.
SPEAKER_04Well, he's like, look, he's from Cape Flats. Have you ever heard of the numbers gang? That's where these people are from, that's where Bianco's from, that's where this guy's from. Yeah, he came to have a look. This guy's not going away. He's not going away. Someone with clean teeth and that he's uh Bianca wasn't like that, she was all fucked up, she needed all that work done to her teeth. This guy's he's looking after himself. This is the dangerous man.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. And and then he kind of puts the squeeze on Doc Ock for 750 large, isn't it? He wants, yeah. Yeah, plus a hundred grand where he's actually only asked for 50, you know, so he he's an absolute piece of shit, and and he's putting this squeeze on because he's already gone to see another guy called Leary, who's a politician, who's also, and we'll find out, it's all about this kind of movie. This it's like a flash driver. A flash drive on a on a movie that is incriminating to a pol politician and it's like the Epstein Files, basically. This is it, and there's as you say, there's paedophile stuff on it, and there's all the kid, like lives with him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Alfred Millennius character's got the kid in the gap. And he's giving it one that he's saved him from like a life of being a street kid or an orphanage and all that. It's like Yeah, but but you saved him to for your own dirty fur.
SPEAKER_04You also have him naked around you, so it's a bit weird.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and sharing him out to everyone. Yeah. And we we find out anyway that he is prepared to pay because he he gives like a hundred large dare to to Luke Evans. He's got a safe. He's got a safe with a load of money. He's he's got a couple of films, he's a Hollywood guy, isn't he? He's got a couple of films, by the looks of it. He's a mover and shaker, he's he's got lots of money and and people around him and everything is politicians.
SPEAKER_03You know, he's got to have a reputation, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So if it comes out that he's that's not great. Yeah. So he's gonna pay up when people like extort money out of him, he has to pay. But it seems like that isn't a problem.
SPEAKER_04And I think this is when the king goes to uh back the Koreans and he the guy's trying to decrypt the the flash drive. Because I don't know what's in that. And he's like, mate, it sounds like some kind of porno, but he straightaway knows what it is because just from the audio. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it we'll also learn that Dr. Wentworth, the the dentist, he has previously possibly tried to double cross the Duke. Yes, yeah, he does. Because he's like, don't fucking try that shit again. Yeah. You know, because he's got a lot of people. That's right now wealthy con a conversation.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So that he has Yeah he has he's hired two policemen, he's uh two hitmen to dress as policemen. That's the fifty K. To do a job on Jacob. It does get fucking thrashing, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And he gets he gets luckily the garbage people, the rubbish people can't.
SPEAKER_03There's also the the sort of subplot of the the lady in the apartment block or something over the road from the motel that he catches first voices. Piping some guy off to just to be a bit of money, extra money. Yeah. And sh she's the one who actually he manages to get back. He sort of is able to beat off the two corrupt cops and get back to the motel, and she gets him. And I think he's out this out off the scene for a couple of days because he's properly done it. She nurses him back to health and looks after him. So he has this sort of bond with her and she's got a kitty and he wants to make sure that's the right.
SPEAKER_02Well, I was thinking with that beating, he's definitely missed his plane back. You know, he he is like immigration are gonna be all over him. And as he's investigating kind of goes on, he he realizes that Bianca was mixed up in his sister, was mixed up in all this shit, that she was married to a guy that he he didn't kind of like, he met once before, but he was in trouble, and it seems that it just kind of spun out of control, and eventually this is why she's been brought up to it and killed. And he he manages anyway to follow Luke Evans again, the dentist, again, going back to the house after he's been beaten up, and he wants to put an end to all this stuff now, doesn't he? So he's got he's he's made kind of a a homemade bomb in a bag. Yeah, it's good and he's got his plan to go back to this big Hollywood house and bring everyone there and blow everyone the fuck out of there up and and save the kid, which is kind of the way that it it pans out. But he's he's very sneaky going into the house and he calls Doc Ock and says, I'm in your office. Yeah. He goes, You get in here now, like I've got what you want, meaning I've got this file. Yeah. And he makes him play it so he can see exactly what the fuck it's about. And then when he sees the kid He's in the other room, playing. In the other room, he's playing at the PlayStation involved in this kind of sex trafficking thing, he's really fucking pissed off about it. And obviously he's pretty motivated beforehand, but now he's like, what the fuck? It's it's another level, and he duct tapes him, and then he's man another guy comes in who's like his helper, and he he manages to bring him in as well. It's Scott or something, isn't it? Um I think he's British as well. And he's got yeah, he's got a phone that that allows him to bring he says, say exactly what I'm gonna tell you to say, and he says, tell him that you know Doc Ock's dead. He's blown his head off and money everywhere. His weird assistant like comes over and starts crying over it. Yeah, yeah, and and that's so he's the dentist is thinking money.
SPEAKER_03Well yeah, he's got he's got the the dentist and the Duke. But Duke doesn't like accuse him again in the car, it's like you've been fucking at it, you know, and he opens the bag to make sure the money's there and lifts it, and you see the the kind of pin go, whereas the you know the top bit of wall of cash is the trigger, and then you just see the car from next to you, bomb, they're gone. Bada bing. So Armand is the kid, isn't he? Yeah. So Chadwick takes him back, but he's given another sort of thrashing by the gang. Yeah the original guy. This is basically mate with his sort of plastic thing holding his face together.
SPEAKER_02Who have worked out where he got a car from earlier.
SPEAKER_03He terrifies that poor kid in the in the room from the lady that's looked after him, and like and I think does he kill him in front of them? Yeah, he stamps his head in. But the kid but the other kid, Armand, doesn't run as a wedding, and then he's just like at the end of the film, he's just like a street kid again. Yeah, which is sort of bittersweet, I guess.
SPEAKER_02And he goes down a some stairs from over a bridge, and you see the posture of the politician who's involved in all this up, you know, and it's still going on. We don't get to him being reserved.
SPEAKER_03Essentially, like a few people get killed, but like all this horrible shit is still happening, and it's all yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then you get a final little kicker at the end, because he he flies home and we realise actually he's he's set her up.
SPEAKER_03He's left some cash money for cash, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um and it's like loads of money for for how's she gonna explain that? Like, I I don't know. Well, she's going back to New Mexico, it's okay. New Mexico. It was just it's more for the bit me that he he went back and you realised in some Africa, he's a he's a cop. You know, he's he's like he's like uh and they're all saluted him. He's not just uh he's not just like a little cop, he's he's like the the top man in one of the most dangerous areas in the world. And we talked a little bit about his brother and his sister both obviously not having made it and everything over the years and grown up on the wrong side of the tracks. It seems that he was uh a a good cop who just went absolute it goes a bit death wish, yeah. It goes death wish, and how was your holiday? Do you see your sister? Yeah, yeah, I saw her. He just plays it cool, he doesn't tell anybody that's not the sort of thing you can know. Yeah, you're not gonna tell anyone that, yeah. Oh, she was involved in prostitution, and I went, hey, well, killed everyone, but that's what happened. True story, true story. It was no, it wasn't true story, right? But it was a good story, I liked it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'd only seen Chadwick Bozeman as Black Panther, so it was nice to see him do something a bit different, because you don't see a lot of new stuff from him too, sadly. But this was new to me, and I really enjoyed it actually. It's fairly generic, it's fairly simple. Like missing person sort of thing, avenging someone. No, it's breezy, it's nice and violent, it's good. Peter's getting killed is fun.
SPEAKER_02It wasn't too over-the-top, unbelievable. There was a couple of that's gritty violence. Yeah, it was gritty violence, a couple of jumps in, as you say, right from the beginning, that the Americans even let him in with only six hundred dollars and uh and uh a week's ticket.
SPEAKER_03And as a keen cyclist, it was nice to see a bit of cycling accessorising in there. Yes, the other chain. Yeah, that's good.
SPEAKER_02Oh, of course, yeah. Uh look for it to good use the chain gang. And and there, I say there was uh a few mixed performances, mainly from the British, who were maybe the dentist wasn't quite so bad, but but Draco was not great, I didn't think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he wasn't he was it didn't fit in a good profile of it.
SPEAKER_02Why did why didn't I just get a an American actor is yeah? Well but no, I enjoyed it. I I thought it was, as you say, short enough to one hour forty-two it is. Yeah, sure. That's that's good enough, though. There's nothing spots.
SPEAKER_04You never really turn to look at your phone. You're not glued to the telly either, but it's like you want to know what happens, it's still a bit cool. There's some nice even Bianca, not when she didn't morgue, she looks good. Yeah, she's nice looking, yeah. She's nice to look at the the other girl, she's really she's gorgeous, yeah. Chadwick's hot. And the other and even the lady, the the one from the motel, the blonde, she's actually pretty, but she's made to look a bit trashy, but she's actually so it's a it's a good I'd say this is a medium strong recommend.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I would agree. I would agree with uh a medium to a nice twist at the end with him being a cop as well. Nice.
