Third Movies and Army of Darkness
In this episode of Bad Dads Film Review, Sidey, Dan and Reegs review Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi’s 1992 third entry in the Evil Dead franchise. The dads discuss how the series evolves from the bleak horror of The Evil Dead, through the horror-comedy balance of Evil Dead II, into the broad medieval slapstick and cult fantasy chaos of Army of Darkness.
The episode also uses Army of Darkness as the jumping-off point for a Top 5 on third films in a franchise, covering titles including The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Toy Story 3, The Matrix Revolutions, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Bourne Ultimatum, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Back to the Future Part III, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, and more.
The main review covers Ash being transported to 1300 AD, the chainsaw hand, the boomstick speech, the Necronomicon quest, the famous “Klaatu barada nikto” failure, bad Ash, skeleton armies, Ray Harryhausen-style effects, and the film’s alternate endings. Reegs argues that Evil Dead II remains the real masterpiece, while Sidey recommends watching the whole series.
This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we complete our accidental trilogy of “third things.” After covering Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the midweek show, we turn to Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi’s third Evil Dead film, and use that as an excuse to dig into the noble, messy and often suspicious art of the threequel.
There is no formal intro this week — time has apparently been attacked by Deadites — so we open with a catch-up on what everyone has been watching. Reegs has been busy with Backrooms, Obsession, Disclosure Day and Apple TV’s Cape Fear, which gets a recommendation so long as you know going in that it is extremely ridiculous. Sidey has finally finished The Pit, finding the second season weaker than the first but still worth the time, and has also watched Backrooms and started The Mandalorian. Dan has finished series five of Slow Horses, which he continues to push as an absolute treat, and has also seen The Odyssey at the cinema, where three hours apparently went by surprisingly quickly.
That leads us into the usual wandering preamble: 4DX screenings with shaking seats, water and wind; panoramic side-screen cinema formats; the Sphere in Vegas; Sidey somehow still not having made it to IMAX; Spider-Man: Brand New Day and big cinema opening weekends; Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal on Hot Ones; and the general horror of people getting overconfident with hot sauce before reality arrives in liquid form.
The Top 5 this week is third films in a franchise, which gives us one of those lists where genuinely great films sit shoulder to shoulder with absolute nonsense. Dan opens strongly with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, a film that swept the Oscars so hard it practically brought its own broom. Sidey goes for Toy Story 3, remembering Lotso, Spanish Buzz, the daycare escape, the furnace sequence and the emotional finality of Andy giving up his toys. Reegs makes a spirited defence of The Matrix Revolutions, arguing that its uneasy truce ending and refusal to give everyone a simple victory has aged better than its reputation suggests.
From there, we move through Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Sean Connery, River Phoenix and the Holy Grail; The Bourne Ultimatum, which Sidey remembers as peak Jason Bourne closure and kinetic shaky-cam action; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, praised by Reegs for Rocket’s unexpectedly emotional backstory; The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, because Frank Drebin remains Frank Drebin; and Die Hard with a Vengeance, which gives Sidey an excuse to talk about Zeus, Simon Says, Jeremy Irons and New York puzzle chaos.
There are plenty of other third-film detours too, including RoboCop 3, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Alien 3, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Back to the Future Part III, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Cornetto trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Blade: Trinity, Karate Kid Part III and Ocean’s 13. Sidey bends the rules by choosing the third episode of Twin Peaks, “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer,” while Dan lands on Before Midnight, the third film in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy.
Eventually, we arrive in 1300 AD for Army of Darkness itself. Dan has not seen it, but has correctly gathered that this is not really the same kind of horror film as The Evil Dead. Reegs, who has seen it many times, explains the tonal journey of the series: the first film as bleak, grimy horror; Evil Dead II as a genuine horror-comedy masterpiece; and Army of Darkness as the point where Ash becomes the full cartoon version of himself — part action hero, part idiot, part Bruce Campbell chin-delivery system.
We talk about Sam Raimi’s direction, Bill Pope’s cinematography before The Matrix, Danny Elfman’s contribution to the score, and the way Raimi’s visual energy clearly echoes forward into later filmmakers such as Edgar Wright. The plot is gloriously simple and gloriously stupid: Ash is dragged through time after Evil Dead II, lands in the middle of a medieval conflict between Lord Arthur and Henry the Red, gets thrown into a pit, fights Deadites, reclaims his chainsaw hand, introduces everyone to the boomstick, and immediately becomes insufferable once the locals start treating him as their prophesied saviour.
The film then sends Ash off to retrieve the Necronomicon, with one very clear instruction: say the words “Klaatu barada nikto” before taking the book. Naturally, Ash being Ash, he half-remembers, fudges it and unleashes the titular army of darkness. Along the way we get the windmill sequence, tiny mirror Ashes, Three Stooges slapstick, bad Ash splitting out of good Ash, Sheila falling for exactly the worst man available, and a castle siege finale full of skeletons, homemade weapons, a modified car and Ray Harryhausen-style chaos.
We also get into the two endings: the darker UK/director’s cut version, where Ash takes too many drops and wakes up in a ruined future, and the more crowd-pleasing US S-Mart ending, where he returns to work, tells the story and gets one last heroic Deadite showdown. Reegs prefers the bleaker ending because it feels funnier and more in keeping with Ash’s ability to mess up almost everything.
The verdict is affectionate, even if slightly qualified. Reegs still thinks Evil Dead II is the one to watch if you only watch one Evil Dead film, and he does not think Army of Darkness is great in quite the same way. But it is funny, quotable, inventive and packed with cult moments: the boomstick, S-Mart, “primitive screwheads,” bad magic words, skeleton armies and Bruce Campbell at maximum Ash. Sidey thinks Dan would probably enjoy it, describing it as something like The Princess Bride with Ray Harryhausen effects and comedy horror nonsense thrown in.
So the final recommendation is simple: if you only watch one, Reegs says watch Evil Dead II. If you ask Sidey, just watch them all.

Army of Darkness
Sidey: Víš vo? So we're doing kind of third thing. Yeah. We did, we did, for our midweek we did Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Yeah. And we're doing, we're doing talk about Army of Darkness, which was the third movie in a franchise. Yeah. So top five is gonna be top five third movies in a franchise. Yeah.
Might have bent the rules a little bit for my norm if I get to it. So all that to look forward to. Yeah. We don't have the official intro style this week. No. I've been pushed for time as well. What you've watched a few bits, rigs, I think, possibly?
Reegs: I've seen loads of stuff actually. I've seen Backrooms that we talked about. I've seen Obsession, which I enjoyed. I have seen Disclosure Day.
I saw ... Finished off Cape Fear-
Sidey: Oh, right, okay ...
Reegs: apple TV.
Sidey: Strong recommend?
Reegs: Saw it ... Yes, but it is very ridiculous. Yeah. Very, very highly, highly ridiculous. So if you know that going [00:01:00] in, you should be all right. So yeah, I've enjoyed that.
Sidey: Nice. I finished off The Pit finally. Yeah. Now the World Cup is virtually done, I managed to finish that off. Second season not as good as the first- Yeah ... but still very entertaining.
Dan: Chris's prophecy comes true.
Sidey: he's right on this one. Although it's still, it's still definitely worth a watch. I think I'm gonna watch Widows' Bay
Reegs: Yeah, it's brilliant.
Sidey: Yeah. It's just getting strong recommends across the board. I watched Backrooms, and I've just started watching The Mandalorian and
Reegs: Oh,
right.
Sidey: But I'm not very far into that, so it's fine. It's just Star Wars stuff.
Dan: Slow Horses. I'm telling you- Yeah ... that is an absolute treat to come. So I finished off the, the fifth series of Slow Horses after a, a bit of a, a break on Apple TV, but was c- pleased to have finished that one off.
I also went to see The Odyssey at the cinema. Yeah. My- How was that? It really good. Yeah. Really good. I mean, three hours goes fast.
Reegs: my [00:02:00] mum
Dan: and nephew went to see it at a 4Max where the seats shake and the water-
Sidey: water- I saw some footage of one of those, and it looked, like, fucking pretty violent
Dan: Yeah. They said... Mum said there was even wind. The arrows come through at one point. She said wind goes pa- And she was like, "Oh, what's that?" You know, so it, it gives you that full kind of experience of- Yeah ... watching it all. But Slow Horses was something-
Sidey: Was it on,
Dan: good. I enjoyed
Sidey: Spider-Man? Yes. Brand New Day, is it? Yeah. That's filmed in Xvision or Total X or something. I can't remember. And what is that? It's where the screen goes round the corner.
Oh,
Reegs: the sides.
Yes, I have seen
Sidey: So there, there's only 21 screens in the UK where you can see that. Yeah. But I've never even got to an IMAX yet, so chances of me seeing
Dan: just trying to do something different, aren't
Reegs: I've seen documentaries in places like that. Some- Right ... they have places in the US and France as well- Right
where you go into, like, an auditorium. It's mostly happening in front of you, but obviously there is stuff... I remember a wildfire documentary, and the guys who put them [00:03:00] out, and obviously, like, the scale of it as it was around you, the wildfire, was quite incredible. But-
Sidey: I suppose you could go all the way to the Sphere in Vegas where it's just fucking everywhere. But
Reegs: how do
they, how do they do that? Like,
Sidey: Think I'd
Reegs: do they decide what to put at the side bits of the-
Dan: Well, you remember the World Cup, they had the...
Around the, the stadiums in some of the World Cup, they had- That's it ... a, a kind of huge screen all the way around. Yeah,
Sidey: Yeah, 'cause you still want to-- the focus of it to be front and center, right? Center. Otherwise, yeah. I don't know. Anyway, the cinema numbers this year seem to be seems to have bounced back a bit, the old
Reegs: Christopher Nolan always gets them in, doesn't he?
Sidey: I mean- It was- ... guaranteed box office ..."Spider-Man" was the- He is cinema ... second highest ever opening weekend.
Reegs: it?
Sidey: Yeah, behind "Endgame."
Reegs: And I literally know no one who's gone to see it.
Sidey: No. Oh, no,
Dan: I know a few people that have gone and enjoyed it. Have they? Said it's... Yeah. It's, it's pretty decent.
Sidey: did watch as well was Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland on "Hot Ones."
Reegs: Okay. I've seen a bit of that
Sidey: one. It, it is quite funny
Reegs: clips [00:04:00] of it.
Sidey: Yeah. They really are best pals, them two. Yeah. And
Reegs: does a good impression of him.
Sidey: Yeah. He does it on this. Scary uncle, doesn't he? They have a good value on it as well, actually.
And then I went down a rabbit hole of watching people getting way too confident about the hot wings. Yeah. And then getting to the bomb and just, like, completely having one.
Reegs: Yeah. And that would be me on the first one, to be honest.
Sidey: would be me on the first one, to be honest. Well, they tell you the Scoville level. Yeah. The first one's 2,100 on the Scoville scale.
Reegs: Is that a lot? That sounds like a lot already
Sidey: I think that would be, like, just some regular hot sauce that you could get in a supermarket or whatever.
Reegs: That's probably enough.
Sidey: Which is pretty spicy. And then I think the bomb one is 135,000. And then there's another one where it's, it's, like, crazy numbers, and, like, that's just gotta be pure pain, surely.
I don't know.
Reegs: I just don't wanna be, like, filmed gagging and crying and-
Sidey: chundered on it. Nice. Yeah. Yeah. So if you're into that.
Reegs: Watching Scarlett Johansson chunder? Maybe. I've never thought about it before, but...
Sidey: it before, but...
Dan: I
Sidey: have some comms on Discord here.[00:05:00]
Dan: So we're gonna be doing top five films that have a third film in their franchise. So The Godfather III, for example. Is that the-
Sidey: That's what we're gonna do, yeah. In... D- yeah ... we're
Dan: brave taking that on, aren't we?
Sidey: Do you want, do you
Dan: which other podcast out there doing this kind of
stuff? No one, no one's
doing it.
Who's dropping this content?
Sidey: we've done this concept. No. Do you wanna get into that right now?
Dan: Oh, I think so. Like, I'd just love... Yeah, let's do it.
Sidey: Right. Third films in a franchise.
Reegs: Mm.
Sidey: Yeah.
Dan: Shot.
Sidey: of them-
Dan: might just pull it off ... 'cause
Sidey: people, when they get successful, they like to just hammer these things to the point where-
Dan: true, isn't it?
Sidey: you know, you get ever- you get diminishing returns. But sometimes the third film is still really good. Yeah. Not always, but sometimes. I,
Dan: tell you, I'm gonna, I'm gonna start- What's
Reegs: on your list
Dan: I'm gonna start with a really strong one. Go on. Because it won 11 Oscars.
Sidey: Titanic
Dan: Yeah, Titanic [00:06:00] 3.
It's
Sidey: It's Return of the King, surely
Dan: L- yeah. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, 2003.
Reegs: See, and it just- Oh ... there we go. It's right there. And it, it swept- Three
Sidey: See it? Oh-
Dan: we go.
Sidey: there
Dan: and it, it
Sidey: Three hours long as
Dan: Oxes.
Sidey: Three hours long.
Reegs: Oscars.
Dan: yeah. It, it,
it literally brought its own broom. It's
Reegs: all, like, visual effects and stuff though? Did they get any, like,
Sidey: though?
Did they get any, like- There's a really shit bit of visual effects in it where he... Have you seen it? Yeah. 'Cause you don't, you don't necessarily vibe with these so much,
Reegs: No, I think I would see it in the cinema, maybe But,
Sidey: No, I think I went to see it in the cinema. Maybe- But the... You know when he convinces the ghosts of the former
Reegs: green guys
Sidey: Yeah. And they just sweep through like a fog, and he's like- I like that ... oh, I thought it was lame. Thought it was a
Reegs: maybe I haven't seen it for a while.
I-
Sidey: That was
Reegs: That was a good moment
Sidey: did win... I think it won, like, Director. Didn't it win Best Picture?
Dan: did win Best Picture. Did, didn't it?
Reegs: But no actor-y stuff. It was all, like, costume and music and- Editing ... editing
Sidey: and Gorrells ... CGI
Reegs: and whatnot, wasn't it?
Dan: Yeah, I think, But Best Picture- Yeah ... I mean, that's- Yeah. That's a pretty big one- Yeah ... to win.
Reegs: come a lot bigger than that,
Dan: don't come a lot bigger than that.
And that's such a [00:07:00] strong start by me.
Sidey: Well done. Toy Story-
Reegs: Jackson takes a lot of the credit,
Dan: Yeah. Does he? Partial.
Sidey: Toy Story 3?
Dan: Wow.
Reegs: Which one? Is that Lotso?
Sidey: Yes. That's the one where it's sad, bittersweet ending because the k- he gives up his toys and it's him- Yeah ... like, moving on from his childhood.
Reegs: Thematically, it felt like the end of the series, didn't
Sidey: how he got really irate about it- Yeah ... when he was... He refused to watch Toy Story 4? Yeah. And apparently five is shite.
Reegs: Is it? I think I'm going to the cinema to see that.
Dan: We,
Sidey: on?
Dan: are? Yeah. We kind of grew up with, with it though.
That was him letting go of the toys and
Sidey: Yeah. Mm. It was a... It would have been a very good place to just fi- but it's one of those things where it's just a massive... Like, it doesn't...
Dan: making money. Yeah. Just
Sidey: Still making money ... probably does
Reegs: I liked four.
I, I, I, don't think there was- It was all right,
Sidey: I don't think- Four was all right, but there was no real...
It didn't add anything to the, what had come
Reegs: was a little bit of something, though, wasn't there? I can't remember it
Dan: to
Sidey: is
Dan: The next generation of kids picking up toys and stuff like that, but- Yeah ... yeah.
Sidey: Yeah. Yeah, this was Lotso, where they end up in,
Reegs: they're at a daycare, aren't
Sidey: daycare [00:08:00] center. They're donated, yeah. And Buzz has his switch turned on to Español, and he starts speaking in Spanish. Yeah. They have to bust out of there, and Lotso doesn't want them to leave, and it ends up in the sort of scary kind of
Dan: a
Sidey: center where they're gonna go in the furnace, and they, they manage to get out through the magnet.
Gates of hell. Lotso ends up being on the front of a trade wagon with, like, bugs going into his face and stuff. Yeah. That was, that was really good, Toy Story 4. Yeah. Strongly recommend for that
Dan: that. Yeah.
Reegs: I'm gonna go for The Matrix Revolutions. That was another 2003- Wow ... movie. And b- people really thought they hated the third one until the fourth one came out. But we'll get to that. But I, I think what people didn't like about The Matrix Revolutions, which is one of the things that I've come to really love about it, is that it doesn't end with easy answers and Neo winning.
It ends with this, like, uneasy truce and, and the guys fighting to a stalemate which, you know, it just didn't go down well at all with audiences. But until they made the fourth [00:09:00] one, I mean, it was-
Sidey: They sort of made the fourth one almost like a protest, didn't
Reegs: They were gonna make it- Some kind of-
whether they were involved or not ... yeah ... so only one of the Wachowski sisters was involved, Lana, I believe, and she wrote this sort of protest movie about why you shouldn't really make a Matrix sequel and kind of, you know, didn't bother with all of the stuff that you'd came to really love, like the finely directed action sequences were much sloppier
Sidey: and- I got so drawn in by the trailer, like I always do, and thought- Yeah ... "This is gonna be amazing."
Reegs: because you're just desperate to go back to that world- Yeah ... it was so cool. There is another Matrix coming and there's somebody good involved. It could be Drew Goddard or Matt Reeves, somebody quite good.
Right. So that, that would be interesting.
Sidey: think I've only seen it the one time at the cinema.
Mm. And all I can remember is just shell casings hitting the floor for- Yeah ... like two hours as I just got bored.
Reegs: got bored. I liked
Sidey: maybe it needs just a rewatch to... I haven't even seen number two for a long, long time. Yeah. So maybe it's just do them all [00:10:00] back to back, but- Yeah. Reappraisal
Dan: Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Yeah.
Sidey: Could be the best one of
Dan: yeah, exactly. And that's where we're going with thirds, isn't it? Where if you, if you can say to all, "It was good. It was great. Actually, the third one's even better," then what you gotta do? You gotta bring in Sean Connery. You know, that's what you gotta do.
You gotta say, "Who's gonna be In- Junior ... Junior. Who's gonna be Indy's dad? Who's gonna-
Sidey: start as well.
Dan: Yeah, River Phoenix at the start as a young Indy. We know where he gets his scar from. He's,
Reegs: It's... I'm a little bit of an Indy 3 denier just for that reason. Just because if they wrote a movie now about a beloved character who had several significant traits, like a scar on his chin, and wore a hat, and carried a whip, and then they revealed in a prequel that it all happened to him in about the space of about 15 minutes, that he got all those things, you'd go fucking bananas.
You'd be like, "What the fuck? How does it..." Like, if [00:11:00] Neo found his trench coat and sunglasses and, like, in a... You wouldn't, you wouldn't have it. That's right. So I think it just landed at the right time.
Dan: they just wandered for eight hours. This, this is just Indy. And obviously there i- I'm going with it because you see his i- ingenuity as well, his dad when he's got the, the umbrella, Sean Connery on the beach- Yeah ... and starts quoting poetry. I'm not sure who it is. Tennyson-
Reegs: Tennyson, I think it is. Yeah, I was go- reaching for that Yeah.
Dan: and sends all the, the kind of birds into the, into the sky that gets caught in the-
Sidey: Well-
Reegs: and the ad-libbed,
Sidey: libbed, She talks to the slave. Number two,
Reegs: two
Sidey: Is dreadful, but not as bad as four or five.
Dan: Which makes three even better.
Sidey: And number one, as we know-
Dan: The
Reegs: greatest film of all time
Sidey: it doesn't matter that I-Indiana Jones doesn't need to be involved. He doesn't- Yeah ... his, his contributes nothing to the film, in
Reegs: the plot w- it would've just happened whether he was there or not
Sidey: not.
Yeah. In fact, he probably makes it easier. Whereas three, it does need him at the end to be the one who picks the right- Yeah ... [00:12:00] you know, chalice. Yeah.
Dan: Well, that's
it. Of course, he's, he's-
Reegs: It's a good
Dan: scene ... he, he finally listens to his dad, "Junior, just leave." And he's, "I could've got it, Dad.
Reegs: Although how fucking stupid were they not to pick the only cup that looked different to every single ev- one of them?
Sidey: Every time I'm, I s- going to pick up my missus from work or something, and she's, like, one nanosecond late, I send her a GIF of the, the knight waving at her. It's a ghost- The old knight phantasm
Dan: The old knight. Yeah. And so we should. Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's a great third film though.
Reegs: Yeah Who is
Sidey: Me
Reegs: it? Me.
Sidey: Jason Bourne, The Bourne Ultimatum. Ah. 'Cause it was, it was actually a kind of a trilogy at this point, and then they did bring it back. This is sort of peak throwing the camera around in fight sequences so you can't really tell at all what's going on. Yeah.
Dan: We get answers as well, don't
Sidey: You do get answers, yeah.
All of his origins. You find out his real name.
Dan: I like [00:13:00] that his real name- You normally do on the third, don't you? You start to get these-
Reegs: happens in the third
Dan: What happens
Sidey: happens in the third one? ... answers. He goes after Jessica Landy, And she tells him what his real name was and how it all went down. Oh. He starts to get more and more of his memory back, and he can remember the training and all that sort of stuff.
Touchstone
Reegs: and all that
Dan: of- Being on the bu-
Sidey: remember. Yeah. It's the one with oh, Jesus Christ, the guy from Dead Man's Shoes. Paddy Considine. But he's in at the very start. Oh,
Dan: got that brilliant sequence. In the, in- He's the journalist, isn't he? In, let's say,
Sidey: got a brilliant sequence. In the, in-
Reegs: is the star Oh, it's got that brilliant sequence. And, He's the journalist, isn't he?
Sidey: let's say, St. Pancras or whatever, and- Yeah.
Reegs: getting on the train
Sidey: eventually released the asset and- Yeah ... they, they take him out. So it does have some good snipery stuff, and it has some fights where, yeah, it's just really kinetic and you can't really tell. It also is it one or two, two maybe has some of the best chase sequences- Mm ... where he has to kill that other hitman, who's-- it's, what's his name, isn't he, from The Boys?
Carl Urban. Yeah. That's right. But this one was good, and it did sort of bring it to a nice-
Reegs: him in the apartment, and he comes through the window, doesn't he, or
Sidey: window, doesn't he? That's a different French dude. Oh, okay. Where he sticks the biro right off his hand. Yeah. It's really grim. So it did give you some closure, but then they did have to bring him back because it's just too successful to [00:14:00] leave there.
Reegs: there. And they brought him back as Jeremy Renner
Sidey: for a little while. For one, yeah, that was the Bourne something. Legacy. Yeah. That was Legacy, and then there was just Jason Bourne. Yeah.
Reegs: One was all right.
I watched that one. It's
Sidey: better than the Jeremy Renner one. Mm. It's just generic film person. Yeah, Ultimatum
Reegs: Yeah.
Dan: F-,
Sidey: of the
Reegs: Galaxy 3, that was unexpectedly good. It's-
Sidey: in that one? I've obviously seen
Reegs: It's the one... It's the... Where you find out what happened to Rocket basically. And
Sidey: Oh, that's right. Second one was the planet. Yeah. And then, yeah, okay. How
Reegs: second one I didn't care for too much. Kurt Russell, Ego the planet, his father and all that. The third one was, like, about Rocket and this collection of CGI animals, and it could've been like- Right ... well, CGI monstrosities. It could've been terrible, but it ended up having, like, a real heart and soul, that movie.
And I can't remember who the bad guy was in it. He was a geneticist, I remember that, and he was creating these animals
Sidey: That's right
Reegs: aesthetic pleasure. Yeah. Yeah, that was a good one. And then that was James Gunn's sort of farewell to [00:15:00] the MCU. Yeah. It was a really good movie, and then he m- obviously has moved over to DCU, and they've got the Green Lantern TV
Sidey: yeah. I watched the trailer for it.
Reegs: What do you think?
Sidey: It's never been an IP that I've been interested in. Yeah. But it has got- Never heard of the Green- ... it has got that guy with the fucking mad hair from, from Superman in it.
Reegs: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Sidey: Nathan Fillion, isn't it? Yeah. So I was sort of quite interested in it.
It's just, it can look really wank when they just create anything they can think of.
Reegs: of. Yeah.
Sidey: It's got... So they, they need to lean into it and make it silly. Otherwise, it's quite hard. It's a
Reegs: quite hard. It's a lot of heavy lifting to do after the Ryan, Yeah ... thingy
Sidey: version. But I guess in a TV series they could do more with it.
I don't know. I will watch some of it and see how
Reegs: it, is. I don't want it to be too dark and gritty, but not too stupid
Sidey: We've also got Clayface coming out, who looks quite interesting. Yeah. Could be, could be into that. Yeah.
Reegs: of body horror movie. Yeah. Daniel? I,
Sidey: I, I,
Dan: I was looking at comedies and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The [00:16:00] Final Insult, With
Sidey: Smith in that one, isn't
Dan: Yeah. It's just daft. Frank Drebin comes out of retirement to go undercover.
Of course he does. He's just got that- He went with, ... deadpan delivery
Sidey: just
Dan: Yeah
Sidey: Anna Nicole Smith.
Reegs: Yeah, Anna Nicole Smith,
Sidey: yeah.
Dan: Yeah. And he's just got the untouchables, I think the baby scene on, on that as well, where he- Yeah ... just spoofs that. And an Oscars ceremony. There's, there's loads of just stupid Frank Drebin lines just delivered brilliantly.
And-
Reegs: Is that the one where he ends up in prison?
you
Dan: want more of the same. Yeah, I think
Reegs: complaining about the food. He starts to write, "This Chateau-
Dan: is
Sidey: starts, "Why,
Reegs: to be served chilled. This is room temperature."
Dan: temperature." Yeah. That's right. He, he's... It, it... There's just different kind of absurd parts of like interrogations and over kind of explained wordplay and- Yeah
The, the crime scene where it's just like, you know, he's, he's not just put a thumbprint, he's [00:17:00] signed a confession, he's done a painting, he's done- Yeah ... so, a, a ton of stuff. And yeah, the bad news which he just doesn't seem to get. It makes me laugh just thinking about each, each one actually. And at that time you just wanted more of the same.
Like- Did you see the- ... you know-
Reegs: Have you seen the most
Dan: Yeah, I did with, Did you? ... Liam Neeson. Yeah. It's not bad. Did you see it? No. It's not bad at all.
Sidey: it
Reegs: it on afterwards.
Sidey: I'm sort of put off by
Dan: It's not bad.
Reegs: quite funny. Yeah. It gets... It, there's some good bits in
Sidey: in it. Yeah. Yeah.
Dan: It's,
it's not,
you know,
as good as-
Sidey: The gag in the trailer where they all look at the picture of their father and the AJ was that You have to sort of get past the thing of Liam Neeson in, was it
Dan: other one was like You have to
Sidey: Extras or the, you know
Dan: the thing of Liam Neeson in, was it Extras
Sidey: does- Yeah,
Dan: Yeah
Sidey: yeah
with Ricky Gervais- Yeah ... where he's trying not to be funny. Yeah. And
Dan: yeah, you have to get past that. But he's good.
Sidey: He is- I've got full-blown AIDS. Yeah.
Dan: is good. He is good in it. It's Pamela Anderson as well, isn't it- Yeah ... in that
Sidey: They had the... They were sort of dating. That's right. Was it, was it just publicity for the movie or
Dan: movie? I don't know. I, I think may have just been publicity, but who knows?
Sidey: publicity, but who knows?
Dan: But [00:18:00] yeah, 33 and a third
Sidey: A threequel movie that I fucking really, really genuinely love is Die Hard With a Vengeance.
Reegs: Yeah, it's a good one.
Sidey: Yes. It's really good. The first three are all really good. Like, I don't think I liked the fourth one that much, but this one's where he, he teams up with Samuel L.
Zeus. Yeah. He's
Dan: dropped off in, like- Yes ... Harlem,
Sidey: really racist-
Reegs: say on his sign, Dan? I can't remember.
Sidey: I'm just trying to remember.
Dan: I, I don't like
Sidey: It isn't like people of African origins, something like that- Yeah. Yeah. And then- maybe more crudely worded
Dan: and he was stripped naked and dropped off in,
Sidey: So Zeus sort of-
downtown ... takes him in saying, "You're gonna fucking get killed." Yeah. And then they go on this thing where,
Reegs: where they end up having to solve some rudimentary, like-
Sidey: Simon Says
Reegs: well, yeah, some sort of math stuff. Like, you know, I've got five leads of this and four leads
Dan: gotta get to a telephone box across town, and you've got no time and-
Sidey: isn't it?
Reegs: But the villainy is sort of misdirected, isn't
Sidey: It's- Yeah ... Hans' brother, but yeah, she doesn't give a fuck about that. Doesn't give a fuck
Reegs: doesn't give a fuck. He doesn't give a fuck about
Sidey: no. It's just robbing bearer bonds or something from what
Reegs: all about the [00:19:00] money. Jeremy
Sidey: Irons. Jeremy's
Reegs: irons. Yeah. Yeah.
Dan: Jeremy's Irons. RoboCop 3. Can I
Sidey: rattle through a few others.
Reegs: on. What's... Which one's RoboCop 3? Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Sidey: can fly in that one, I think.
Reegs: Yeah. Yes. Is that the one with the robot or- It's got robots
they've all got robots, but where the, the... Is that the one with the drugs and,
Sidey: No, I think that's two ... they--
Reegs: Oh, right. Which one's in the third one?
Sidey: the third one? It's very
Reegs: it's really bad, isn't
Sidey: terrible, yeah,
Dan: I'm not sure I've ever seen that one, to be honest.
Sidey: Another one that's really bad is Austin Powers Goldmember. Yeah. That was turd, and apparently that is coming back. One that-- from the greatest franchise of all time- Yeah ... but this is probably not its finest
Reegs: is this gonna be Tokyo Drift, is it? Yeah.
Dan: Yeah. But I
Sidey: gonna be Tokyo Drift,
Reegs: That's the one where they completely abandon all the cast and relo- and everything about it and relocated to
Sidey: that guy who's in NCIS
Dan: NCIS
Sidey: New Orleans. He's got the-- It was that sort of American Southern accent.
Yeah. And he is an expat, I
Reegs: In Japan
Sidey: Yeah, [00:20:00] he's been shipped out. He does something fucking naughty, then he has to get bombed out of America. So he goes to Japan and he meets little Bow Wow-
Dan: And
Sidey: the scene over there is not just about how fast you can go- No ... but how well you can drift.
Reegs: you can drift It's about how you can drift- Yeah
exactly
Sidey: So lots of going through multi-story car parks, and they're perfect at it, and his car's, like, completely wrecked by the time they stop. All the
Reegs: the neon
Sidey: then that... There is the guy in there who's supplying him with cars who, who becomes-
Reegs: Han, are you talking about?
Sidey: who dies and comes back.
Y-
Reegs: well,
no.
The... He, he doesn't
Sidey: is this a prequel?
Reegs: It's- Well, he's frozen ... it's revealed that-
Sidey: This is out of sequence ... it's taken
Reegs: right at the end, so they have to keep coming up with, like, completely elaborate- Yeah ... things to, to prove why this guy's still alive in the continuity of the film even though he died in the third movie.
Sidey: Yeah.
Reegs: So yeah, there's that as well.
Dan: Don't let that get in the way. Yeah.
Sidey: Think of it like a,
Dan: Don't get, like, a, a, a def-
Sidey: I think,
Reegs: I haven't seen the most recent one. Is that, is that the one that's in outer space?
Sidey: that the one set in outer space? It's, it's not very... No, that was nine, which was great. 10 is not very good, I have to say. I
Reegs: seen 9 either
Dan: Are we, we gonna do the the best 10ths in one day? [00:21:00] I mean,
Sidey: I mean- It won't be that many- Yeah ... but there'll be a few.
Reegs: I looked this up earlier. You've got the King Kong movies. You've got, What other franchises were there that had 10 or
Sidey: James Bond.
Reegs: James Bond. Yeah.
Sidey: Probably getting close.
Star Wars- Yeah ... and Star Wars.
Reegs: Wars. But there was there were some horror franchises that-
Sidey: that had- Leprechaun? ... big
Reegs: good numbers. Yeah.
Sidey: Yeah, so the f- the last Fast and Furious, X- Yeah ... is a two-parter finale, and-
Reegs: So there's 11 ... Gal
Sidey: Gadot is supposed to be back in the last one. She was absolutely definitely killed.
Yeah. But they just bring her back somehow.
Reegs: So there's 11 movies in the 10-part series of- Yeah
the
Sidey: Well, and then you've got the one with- Hobbs
Reegs: you've got the one with- Hobbs & Shaw or whatever it
Sidey: is one of the better ones. Right, after that I will probably just nominate. Okay. And I'm, I'm gonna break the rules as well for that now.
Go
Reegs: know the rules as well for that one ... a couple. Alien 3. Mm. David
Sidey: Oh ...
Reegs: fincher enraged the entire world by killing off Newt and Hicks in the opening scenes. They, they died, they died on the way back to their home planet.
Dan: He
Reegs: He poochied them. And and [00:22:00] he's just spent the rest of his life apologizing for it, basically, hasn't he?
It's not that bad. It's just different, isn't it? It's the one where it's on a prison planet with Charles Dance, and they're all rapists and murderers and whatnot. Charles Dutton. You already had that one. John Wick: Chapter 3,
Dan: Parabellum.
Reegs: Parabellum. Yes. So good. Three and a half hours. If only they had put another hour in.
Sidey: Have you seen that one, Dan? No. I wouldn't have, would I? Strong
Dan: It's strong. Is it? Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Sidey: yeah. Really good.
Dan: I must have seen it actually, some point, but I don't-- I haven't watched them in order of-
Sidey: one, isn't it?
Reegs: now, isn't it?
Dan: now, hasn't it? Yeah. Haven't watched them in order. I, I'd go back to- Back to the Future Part
Reegs: as well. The weakest of the trilogy, I think.
Sidey: it Mig's favorite Western?
Dan: Yeah. I- Yes, it usually is. I, I was g- I was gonna mention that. I, I quite like that. I watched that, It's brilliant ... yeah.
Reegs: it a lot, but it's probably the weakest of the trilogy, I think. But,
Sidey: still a nine and a half out of 10.
Reegs: Yeah, and then it still has that thing where they keep playing where his mum or some ancestor
Sidey: kind of- Wants to shag him ... pops up. Yeah.
Reegs: which is good. And then just my nom, shall I go for that? Yes. Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
Sidey: Mentioned this before. I've never seen this
Reegs: it's a crazy one. It's the [00:23:00] one of the, it's the only film in the franchise that does have nothing at all to do with Michael Myers and the iconic mask, and the freed, you know, the shape as he terrorizes the people.
This one, no, is about a Halloween mask manufacturer who's embedded fragments of Stonehenge into novelty masks, and is planning to kill every child in America simultaneously on October the 31st, which I'm in fan, a fan of, and in favor of. It's really good. No, it's not really good, but it's worth watching just for the sheer craziness of its plot.
And yeah, that's my favorite third.
Dan: Well- I it's, it's, it's quite a tough one actually. I mean, you got The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. That was a pretty good one on the, the Dollars Trilogy. You've got the Cornetto trilogy- Yeah ... that, that was quite funny all the way through. But I- I
Reegs: got Star Wars is like a set of threes.
Dan: Yeah. Yeah. Isn't it?
Reegs: Innit? Yeah. And depending on w- how old you are-
Sidey: [00:24:00] Yeah I'm old enough
Reegs: you'll think whichever
Dan: But I think Avengers: Infinity War for, w- was one that I'm gonna nom because it- Yeah ... I
Sidey: How are you getting a third out of that?
Dan: it? That was the, the third one, wasn't it? The Infinity
Sidey: Avengers movie. Yeah,
Dan: the third Ave- where there was, like, the- You
Reegs: He just said Avengers Assemble
Sidey: of Ultron, and then was it Infinity? Okay.
Reegs: Infinity? Okay. Okay. And,
Dan: and that one Infinity. There was also the Guardians of the Galaxy did, Recently ... three as well. Yeah. So, but that one, yeah.
Sidey: Yeah.
Dan: We're in
Sidey: that world ... quick, quick mention of Blade: Trinity.
Reegs: Yes. Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel.
Sidey: Yeah. And then, and Blade's been in sort of s- in the news, but
Dan: M-
Sidey: Mahershala Ali was being interviewed and he said, "Yeah, they'll definitely shitcan that." Yeah.
Like it's completely gone. He's like-
Reegs: way. He's gone a little bit further, 'cause he's basically said if they wanted to make it,
Sidey: would. Well, they said they, they've got billions and billions of dollars, so if they wanted, they... If they wanted to make it, they would just make it, so. Yeah. But they even did a post-credit scene about it in-
Reegs: they even did a post-credit scene about it. They did, yeah. So. They obviously don't have a story, I guess
Sidey: Well, they don't. They [00:25:00] had one for Doomsday No. To stop him.
Reegs: That's, I think, gonna be fucking awful, isn't it?
Dan: It's
Sidey: It's got, it's a, it's r- it's a risk. Karate Kid Part III I remember really liking. And another one that I've seen probably way more than it deserves is Ocean's 13. But I do always
Dan: is, is more than it
Sidey: I'm gonna actually nominate, can, if you allow it the third episode of a TV series.
Okay. It's called... This, a particular episode is called Zen or The Skill to Catch a Killer.
Dan: Ooh,
Reegs: is that in... Wait, that's The Wire, is it? Or The Sopra- no, it's something I know.
Dan: know.
Sidey: Sopranos episode three was Denial, Anger, Acceptance. The Wire was The Buyes.
Reegs: Okay. And what-
Sidey: This one is,
Reegs: got a list of all of the top three things.
Okay.
Sidey: Okay. This is where Agent Cooper in the Red Room- Oh ... has his dream about who killed Laura Palmer with the dancing dwarf talking backwards and- Oh ... all the weird shit going on, and then he[00:26:00]
Reegs: What's that song title then? Hmm? What was the name of the episode? Zen
Sidey: Zen or- Zen or The, The Skill to Catch a Killer.
Is it? And he awakes from his dream, and he says, "I know." He phones up the police chief and says, "I know who killed Laura Palmer." And you're like, "Fuck." Dun, dun, dun. And then when he gets to the next episode, he's like, "I don't actually know. I just need
Dan: need to-"
Sidey: interpret what the dream means." But the dream was really iconic, 'cause you were just watching this fucking completely mental, far-out stuff.
Yeah. And then that's been obviously referenced a lot. Simpsons did it brilliantly in Who Shot Mr. Burns? Yeah. So yeah.
Dan: Twin Peaks. I'm gonna change mine now.
Sidey: Go for it ... because
Dan: I can. It w- well, 'cause I was thinking actually, like there's, there's two others that, that really stick out for me that I really enjoyed the, the whole trilogy.
The Rockies, obviously you've got... That's the Mr. T one. Yes. That's not gonna be the one that, And we didn't mention The Godfather, I think, or if we did- We did not ... we're gonna mention it again or, or quickly just now. I know we mentioned it earlier just talking about... But Before Midnight, which is the the [00:27:00] trilogy of Richard Linklater,
Sidey: Linklater- Linklater
Dan: With Julie Depie and Ethan Hawke, and I just think that was a lovely trilogy of films.
And I followed that one through. That one came through at, what? 2013, I think,
Sidey: There's the Three Colors trilogy, isn't
Dan: there's a three colors trilogy as well. But- Is there? ... I'm gonna go for, Yeah, there was the three colors, red, white, and blue, isn't it? But Before Midnight.
Sidey: Nice. Yes. So we need two more thirds. This haven't been-
Dan: Let's have them
Reegs: Is that you? Yep.
Dan: Army
Sidey: of Darkness. Yes. So Dan, I don't think you've not seen this ever? No. No. Do you think it would be scary? 'Cause I can tell you r- right here and
Dan: I didn't because I, I did little bit of research into it, and I didn't get round to watching it. But it seemed more of the comedy-
Sidey: yeah
Reegs: Yeah which
Dan: quite surprising
than scariness.
Sidey: The
Reegs: I have seen this [00:28:00] movie numerous times. Evil Dead 2 is up there in the conversation for best movies of all time- Okay ... in my opinion. And The Evil Dead, the first Evil Dead is really good as well, and this was l- like you say, a big transition out to-
Sidey: It sort of does a catch up-
a comedy ... in the first couple of minutes of this film
Reegs: Yeah, they recreate several- Yeah ... scenes from Evil Dead 2. But th- in the first one, it's, like, a much more bleak- Yeah ... horror movie. Second one- With tree rape ... yeah, with tree rape and, and Ash is, is just at the, you know, he's just a, a real...
He's put through the wringer, and it's quite horrible sort of thing. In the second one, he becomes... It, there's still a lot of horror. This is one that really cleverly balances horror and comedy, 'cause there's still a lot of real fucking freaky shit, but there's also him, the sort of slapstick part of the jokes.
And by the third one, he's almost, like, Jim Carrey-esque- Yeah ... sort of buffoonery on screen. So yeah, the, the movie open- it, and, oh, just to talk a little bit as well about the people who cut their teeth on this. Obviously Sam Raimi doing it, but the cinematography was by Bill [00:29:00] Pope who obviously went on to do
Dan: had a big religious, Yeah
Reegs: big hat. In that one. Massive hat. Yeah. He was the cinematographer for The Matrix and worked- Right ... with Edgar Wright and all sorts of stuff. And you can obviously see as well Edgar Wright's influence from Sam Raimi-
Sidey: yeah, definitely ... in terms of the
Reegs: editing from this stuff. And the score was contributed to by Danny Elfman.
So, you know-
Dan: He's a little guy, weren't he?
Yeah. Yeah. Tiny guy. Yeah.
Reegs: So just some of the people, and there were many, many more who worked on this that were, like, d- you know, in the industry.
Dan: Mm. Yeah.
Sidey: So we first see like some hooves.
Reegs: we first see like, some hooves. Yeah. He's in chains, isn't he? He's
Sidey: Yeah, he's in the, like, this sort of stock thing being dragged around with some other prisoners, and he's doing a bit of a voiceover, and he says he thinks the year's 1300- 1300
AD or something like that, as far as he can work out.
Reegs: And he, he recaps the events- Yeah
of the second movie, which include, So they, they read from the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead, bound in human flesh, inked in human blood- Yeah ... and having several bizarre [00:30:00] incantations in them that will resuscitate the dead. And they read from it in a cabin, and the evil comes for him. And in the course of fighting them off Ash has to chainsaw off his own hand when it becomes possessed.
It's one of the great moments in cinema where he's screaming, "Who's laughing now?" as
Dan: he's- ... chainsawing his
Reegs: hand off. And yeah, so he, he ends up becoming... Sort of his journey in the second movie, he becomes almost this action hero by the end of it, and you do see some of the things that become cartoonish in this one where he, like, g- gets a chainsaw on his hand and all that sort of stuff.
But anyway, they manage to kind of open up this portal to suck the evil away, but it's too powerful and Ash ends up getting pulled back in
Sidey: time- Mm
Reegs: uh, from the, from the second movie into this place. So that explains why he's there. Yeah. And he's caught up with, in this sort of civil war that's going on and this battle for local territory with Lord Arthur and Duke Henry the Red, I think the guy's name is.
Yeah. And he's sort of caught in the middle of this stuff, and Arthur thinks he's part of the [00:31:00] Henry's men, and Henry doesn't
Sidey: Yeah, but they're- Go on ... they're just, just worried about how badly he's gonna die because one of the prisoners is chucked down the, the well.
Reegs: Yeah, they take him to this
Sidey: well.
And just like comedy, like, levels of blood spray out. Like, it could just ... It's amazing. It,
Reegs: because the camera starts to zoom in, and it leaves it... There's no- you just hear nothing for ages, and then suddenly there's this fountain of blood. Yeah. Sod over the top ... and then, yeah, Ash is, is thrown down there and forced to fight. But he's a little bit more, from the second movie to this one, he's got way more moves, and he kinda kicks this fucking-
Sidey: had an encounter with this sort of local clericy type person.
Reegs: The wise man. Yeah. Yeah. He believes him to be prophesized as the man who'll be able to fetch
Sidey: The, the, the man who falls from the sky, you know, will be the one to
And he, he has seen him literally just, like, fall out and land on the floor.
Reegs: So he starts to fight this Deadite,
Sidey: it's that guy that chucks the chainsaw
Reegs: Yeah, it is, yes. He fights this Deadite, which is what [00:32:00] happens. They, when the evil possesses you, you, you look all weird, you get white eyes and you, you're a Deadite. So he's fighting this thing and the guy throws down the chainsaw, and "Chosen One," and he does this, like, Dragon Ball-esque punch up into the sky, and the chainsaw lands perfectly on his stump, and he brings it down.
Yeah. "Hey, she bitch, let's go." And he just,
Dan: Oh, so that becomes part of his arm then, does it? Yeah. Yeah. This kind of- Chainsaw ... chainsaw arm. Yeah.
Reegs: So he fights that thing as these... 'Cause these spikes are crushing in as well.
Sidey: He chops up and it takes her hand, and it just lands on this
Reegs: guy's face. Yeah,
Sidey: guy's face. Yeah. Out of nowhere. Yeah. Yeah.
Reegs: So the hand goes and then he gets... He m- you think he's, like, chopped her up or... In fact, I think he has. It's the second one,
Sidey: he takes his- He, he beheads her, and then he chops up the real mutant one. Yeah. Is, is the one he cuts the-
Reegs: And he climbs back up and he's like, now they're all a bit in awe of him, obviously, and he gets some water and he starts to boss them around.
"You want some?" He picks on the weediest guy there. I think he was the guy that
Sidey: think he was the guy that was whipping him. He was. And the chain guy, yeah. [00:33:00] Yeah. And then he's got his his boom stick.
Reegs: boom stick. That's... This is amazing. They all start, like there's a rabble, and then, well, one comes up and he just pulls it, pulls out his shotgun, which had been confiscated previously, and he blows this thing apart, and obviously the crowd in medieval times have not seen-
Sidey: He describes it
Reegs: "This is my
Sidey: ShopSmart, Shop S Mart. Yeah.
Reegs: Yeah. He tells them all about the the features of the gun from the mall where he wor- from the s- supermarket where he works. And yeah, he calls them all primitive screwheads. So pretty much straightaway now he's gone from being the the whipped guy to being, I mean, like grotesque.
He's lying back and the, all these women are, like, feeding him grapes- Yeah. ... and he's even got a chicken,
Dan: He's the new leader.
Reegs: Yeah. And he's, he's basically completely insufferable about it, and there's Sheila,
Dan: who,
Sidey: who,
Reegs: who's, like, the princess or whatever. And she,
Sidey: her brother's just been killed in this battle.
Yeah. But they're telling Ash, "You're gonna h- you're gonna be the one. Your quest is to go and find the Necronomicon."
Reegs: While she's sort of simultaneously hating him and falling in love with [00:34:00] him. Exactly. "First you wanna kiss me, then you wanna kill me." Yeah. "Blow." Yeah.
Sidey: Yeah.
Reegs: As he says to her. So anyway, he, because Ash is, like, completely self-interested and motivated, he learns that this getting the Necronomicon back is the path for him to return home.
So the wise man's like, "If you get the book, I'll send you back." So he sends him off. They go to this path, and the horses get all spooked. There's a few bits of comedy we don't need to bother with, but the horses get all spooked and won't go any further. And he's like, "Right, when you go into that cemetery, only you can go there, chosen one, and you have to say these three words: Klaatu barada nikto."
And he's like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know the words." He's like, "No, go on. Repeat them." He's like, "Klaatu barada nikto. No, I fucking know them." Right, then off he goes into the to, to go and get it. He- there's a brief stop via a windmill where, like, the evil chases him And he ends up in this windmill where the evil's, like, pounding on the door.
It's good, like, proper horror stuff, and then it becomes just stupid comedy where he smashes this... Did you get to this [00:35:00] part? He smashes the mirror, and he sees all these tiny reflections of him, and it becomes like Gulliver or something- Right ... and these tiny little versions of him. And it was all done with, like, them standing in front of big screens and re-filming, so it was all done in the viewfinder, not post, which is quite interesting.
But so yeah, it manif- basically, at the end of it, all these tiny little guys, and it's really Three Stooges-esque humor. Him falling around and, like, gets his face on a stove, and he's having to lever it off with, like, a, a sort of fish slice and that sort of thing. Like, it's really silly. And the...
one of the... They tie him... They knock him out, and one of the little guys jumps into his mouth. And it... So, and he's pouring boiling water down, going, "Ah, who likes that?" Like, boiling water, trying to kill him. And then the little guy suddenly... Like, he gets a little itch on his... This is all important because it, it gets a little itch on his shoulder, and then he, he looks, and there's a little cut, and he sort of scratches it.
And then there's just an eye looking out. Yeah. And so suddenly this, like, new [00:36:00] version, a completely full-sized Ash starts emerging out of him. It's really horrible. Yeah. But sort of quite comedy special effects. They end up having a fight and Ash dis- this is like good Ash versus bad Ash, basically.
"Goody goody two shoes, goody goody two shoes," as he says to him. And he chops him up. He ends up fighting with him, chopping him up and killing him. This guy will end up coming back as the leader of the dead when Ash now goes to go and get the books. And he has to go and... There's three books, so there's a bit of jiggery-pokery with that.
But on the third one, when he picks it up, he's like, "Oh, yeah, I've got to say the magic words. Klaatu barada-"
Dan: barada..."
Sidey: Gone And then
Reegs: like, "I know it begins with an N." And then, so he... Oh, it's just amazing. He's just like, "Well, it's three words, begins with an N. Everybody knows that, right?" He's,
Sidey: sorts it out. He's like, "Klaatu
Dan: barada nikto."
Reegs: Like, he just does a sort of cough, takes the book. He's like, "I said the words. It's all all right."
And he fucks off back to the castle. But this unleashes an army [00:37:00] of darkness, the titular army of darkness, led now by the sort of resuscitated bad
Dan: third word ... bad Ash.
Reegs: that third word. Yeah. And so it becomes a sort of big action sequence finale set in the castle. It's an amazing bit where they get his car that's been confiscated at the beginning.
Sidey: yeah, 'cause that went through the thing as well, didn't it?
Reegs: yeah, 'cause that one didn't Yeah. And they open up the boot, and he's got th- he's got a copy of Fangoria in there, which is pretty cool, and then he's got three books. One is Chemistry 101 the second one is How to Build Your Own Steam Plant, and there's something else. And he... So he, he ends up, like, making all these like weapons, and he turns his car into a sort of helicopter bladed tank.
And there's a big, like, Ray Harryhausen-esque finale of, of skeletons fighting against Ash, and eventually evil Ash is killed, and the guy gets hold over the Necronomicon, and blah, blah, blah. Everything's put to bed. And then it gets to the end where there were two endings if you watched it. In the UK, and the original director's cut [00:38:00] ending he is given...
He's like, "Oh, I've got to get back to my old own time." And so the wise man's like, "Right, you have six drops of this stuff, and you'll sleep for 100 years for each drop that you take of this, and you'll wake up back in your own time." Okay? Not right sure how the maths works, whatever, but anyway. So he goes off to this cave.
"Thanks. See you all later." One, two, three, four, five, four, five, six. So he does one too many drops and ends up in a horrible post-apocalyptic future where there's, like, ruins of Big Ben for some reason as he comes out, as well as other- Wow ... buildings. And then in the US release, he does five drops six drops.
He does end up going back to his own time, and he's in the S-Mart- S-Mart
Sidey: in S-Mart, yeah.
Reegs: with Jane Fonda as his girlfriend, and he's recounting the story. "So, yeah, I could have stayed to be their king, but I decided to come back here and work in the S-Mart." And everybody's a bit like, "Mm." And then suddenly a Deadite [00:39:00] emerges, and he fucki- it's like a real Hollywood...
He pulls out the the shotgun, and he's, like, sliding along on a tray thing shooting them. I prefer the other one where he finally fucks up once more time, but
Dan: And they got the alternate endings.
That's, Yeah ... the second one we've done this week, because we did mention on "Close Encounters" on the midweeker, that alternate ending that Steven Spielberg- On board ... made for "Close Encounters." But oh, interesting. So it's not so scary as in spoofy.
Reegs: it's almost parody- Yeah ... spoofy. I th- I have a lot of affection for this, but I don't know that it's a terribly good movie. Not in the same way that I genuinely believe Evil Dead II is a masterpiece.
Mm.
Sidey: It's a weird, like, tonal shift to be just, just really out and out comedic.
Reegs: i- it's like, it's a spoof pretty much, and that's quite... Yeah. And, and this, that then became the persona of Bruce Campbell and the Ash character into the TV series, and the comics, and all that sort of stuff afterwards, when he wasn't like that [00:40:00] to begin with. But this is where it all started. Although the recent Evil Deads have gone much more, like-
Sidey: I haven't seen any of those
Reegs: gory. Oh, I quite like them. I haven't seen the very most recent
Sidey: This one. B- yeah, the last couple of weeks, wasn't it? Yeah.
Reegs: I haven't seen that one yet, but I've seen all the others. They're very violent. So super
Sidey: I started watching the series. I was quite enjoying it.
Reegs: Yeah. I watched that and My Name is Bruce.
Sidey: Right.
Dan: That good? My Name is
Reegs: Yeah, I quite liked that as well. Yeah. But I d- I g- I like Bruce Campbell. I've got... If, If Chins Could Kill was his biography. I've read it.
Sidey: I think you would like this, 'cause it almost... It does remind me a little bit of The Princess Bride in the- Yeah. ... in the setting, but chuck in some Ray Harryhausen into that- Right.
Right, right ... and some sort of comedy horror. You... I think you'd actually get a kick out of this.
Reegs: Oh, it's funny, man. I've, I still laughed at it ev- What was
Dan: was the Rowdy Rowdy Roddy Piper one we watched? The Thing. Was it The
Sidey: No, that
Reegs: Live, are you
Dan: They Live. They Live.
Reegs: That was a bit more...
Dan: W- th- this- Did
Sidey: you see that someone had, You know the Meta glasses?
Yeah. The, the pervert glasses, but it's Kylie Jenner doing all the advertising for it. Someone had [00:41:00] got one of the, like, bus shelter... Yeah, it's on the side of the bus, and as you walked round it went from Kylie Jenner to being a They Live poster and like Meta's always watching you. It's really good.
Really, really clever.
Reegs: good. That's good.
Dan: Well, it
Reegs: it gave me, it gave
Dan: hints actually when you were talking about that, of, of both They Live and I was also thinking of Princess Bride as well when you
Sidey: does
Reegs: think that's not a bad comparison,
Sidey: look... You know, I was thinking when the princess arrives like, God, this, you know, and then the castle and stuff.
I was like it's got the same sort of aesthetic as Princess
Reegs: I think they, they did so... I mean- Total ... considering what the budget was, which I don't know, but it will not have been very much compared to what was on screen,
Sidey: 11 million.
Reegs: yeah. And I mean, they have full-on massive battles in this. And if you look really carefully, you can see the guys at the back, their costumes are fucking terrible and that sort of thing. But don't look at that stuff. No. Right.
Dan: It's get the stuff on- Yeah ... on front. But-
Sidey: made nearly 22 million back, so decent.
Dan: Doubled its money. Yeah. That's
Reegs: you're ever gonna watch an Evil Dead movie, watch Evil Dead 2
Dan: 2. Yeah.
Sidey: But just watch them [00:42:00] all.
Reegs: Yeah, all that
Sidey: Strong recommend then.
Dan: Okay. Right.
Sidey: Right. I'll go and out and watch it.
Dan: I'll go and out and watch it. I'll go and do that now
Sidey: Another week in the can.
Reegs: Yeah.
Dan: Yeah. Christian
Sidey: hasn't been here this week.
Dan: No, he's, he's, he's away and, and Pete is still recovering from the pool party
Reegs: Oh
Sidey: The... We had a fairly,
Dan: a fairly lively Saturday night Yeah, lively Saturday night. Um Um,
Sidey: he's an, Pete's an athlete now. Did you know that? He's doing, he's doing... He's taken up yoga. Yeah. And he's also walking, like, 20 miles every week. Well,
Dan: he's,
he's accepted a bet from a good friend of ours that he's gonna do the Island Walk.
Sidey: In Pete's favor. It's, it's definitely in Pete's favor,
Dan: Pete, a lonely gamble in his favor
Sidey: Pete.
They're both gonna do the Island Walk next year. Okay. And Paolo is saying he'll give Pete eight hours and still beat him. Like, you fucking won't. Paolo just is lying. And
Reegs: Paolo has lost his mind. And what's the bet? How much for?
Sidey: To buy him a [00:43:00] barbecue.
Dan: Okay. Yeah, and well-
Reegs: maybe he just wants to buy him a barbecue. Paolo's
Dan: just betting that Pete's not gonna finish. Yeah. Yeah. That's basically what's gonna need to happen. But Pete, we've seen Pete get injured at walking football at
Reegs: warm-up. There's every
Dan: reason to believe he could just- Yeah
you
Sidey: true
Dan: peak too early and go. He
Sidey: he's already started training for it. He's did a 20 miler last, last, last Thursday, so.
Reegs: we could injure Paolo if that happens. Yeah,
Sidey: quite like that. We, we could see.
Dan: Yeah, I was quite like that. We, we can see who- who- as long as I get round, invited round to-
Reegs: Pete's barbecue
Dan: barbecue at some point, then that'll be fine.
Reegs: In fact, everyone's invi... If you're a listener, you're invited to Pete's house for a barbecue.
Dan: Anytime you like. Yeah.
Sidey: Someone's noms next week, so we'll figure all that stuff out. But- Yeah ... for now, all that remains is to say Sidey signing out.
Reegs: Rick has left the building.
Dan: And Dan has gone.
Reegs: Yeah
