Midweek Mention... Short Circuit

Number 5 is alive. But sadly so is casual racism and lazy story telling. We watched Short Circuit. A film we all enjoyed as kids and probably should have left it that way!

A Simple Favor & Masters of the Universe: Revelation

Alternative facts, post truth, yes it really is the age of bullshit as far as reality is concerned but movies that are based on real events have always captured the cinemagoer's imagination. Our Top 5 Movies Based On A True Story includes incredible feats of heroism and villainy, and provides a window to the past to allow us to evaluate people or places in a different context. That extra frisson of truth to a story can elevate the stakes as reality truly can be stranger than fiction. Our main fe...

Midweek Mention... Clerks

Kevin Smith takes occasional time out from swooning over us on Twitter to make movies. One of those films forms the subject of this week's Midweek Mention. We watched Clerks and if you listen closely to this podcast, you can overhear four men discuss that very movie.

Andhadhun & Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom

The train was invented by Englishman Dr Glenjamin Train back in the summer of 1997 when he realised what an incredible name he had for a new form of transportation. No of course, I'm being facetious: the truth is that no one knows how the locomotive was invented nor indeed how they work and those things will continue to remain a mystery as you tune in to listen to us discuss the Top 5 Movie Trains. Some incredible railway facts are only moments away courtesy of Peter Andre, a dedicated and enthu...

Mamma Mia! & Beat Bugs

Sidey pointed out to me this week that our podcast is not for film experts but film enthusiasts which is obvious really because there's little of insight to be had in this weeks show. The distinction that our favourite tattooed and bearded mother-fancier highlighted has never been so clear than when we are discussing a genre for which I self-admittedly have neither expertise nor enthusiasm. This weeks harmoniously themed episode sees the Bad Dads discussing the Top 5 Musical Numbers and with som...

Midweek Mention... The Sound of Music

Our podcast is alive...With the SOUND OF MUSIC! Peter Andre and Sidey have already outed themselves a big Sound of Music fans. What about the others? If you've been on twitter this week you'll know Reegs thoughts. One thing to point out, this movie has a run time of 2 hours 55 minutes, which is quite a long time if you don't like this sort of thing. In any case, tune in just to see how many times we burst into song!

Anomalisa & Rainbow Rangers

It may not be obvious to our listeners but we do usually put quite a lot of thought into our choices for each weeks podcast, whether it's to link the main feature and kids tv programme thematically or to ensure we have an even distribution of the types and genres of movies we review. That same level of planning is often true of the Top 5 category, although this week I heard Sidey say something in the midweek mention and thought 'that will make a great top 5' so here we are with the Top 5 Title D...

The Dig & Minecraft: Story Mode

Ah the humble hat: giver of shade, cooler of neck, warmer of head, is there anything they can't do to aid the cranial region? Loads probably, but that's not important right now. What is important is the Top 5 Movie Hats and it's quite the fascinating collection, from bowlers, stetsons and flat caps through to berets, fez's and baseball caps, your favourite hat is bound to be represented. Suffolk, England was the site of an incredible historical find back in 1939, as Dan fondly recalls. Netflix’s...

I, Tonya & Zero Chill

With the Bad Dads on the brink of implosion and Dan utterly oblivious the best way to lighten up the mood is for a quick trip to that happiest of places: the graveyard. Not for sex but for the Top 5 Movie Graves and whilst it might seem a bit gruesome at first we hope we manage to generate as many laughs as we do tears. Which is to say, probably none of either. I,TONYA is a movie that we had all wanted to see but somehow managed to skip, making this 2017 biographical drama of infamous tabloid vi...

Midweek Mention... Blood Simple

Risky territory here, as we take our first look at the work of the Coen Brothers. Risky in that I'm going to be very disappointed if any of the guys didn't enjoy this movie! Blood Simple is the 1984 debut movie of the Coen Brothers. The movie features excellent turns by John Getz , Frances McDormand , Dan Hedaya , and M. Emmet Walsh . All the trademark Coen touches are present, so surely we can mark this one down as a hit!?

mother! & Charli's Crafty Kitchen

75% of the Bad Dads wear glasses which it turns out is a decent representation of the general public according to The Vision Council who I've never heard of. That seems like an awful lot if you compare that to the number of characters in movies who wear spectacles; usually it's as much a personality trope as it is a wardrobe choice, eye wear bestowing nerdiness, intelligence or cunning depending upon the style of frames chosen. We're talking about the Top 5 Movie Spectacles and that means sungla...

Midweek Mention... The Debt Collector

Stuntman and fight choreographer turned writer and director Jesse V. Johnson's third collaboration with English martial artist Scott Adkins was 2018's THE DEBT COLLECTOR, a superior DTV action crime-thriller. Adkins plays French, an ex-paratrooper and martial arts instructor who becomes drawn into the criminal underground as a debt collector when his dojo is affected by financial troubles. Johnson's energetic script fizzes and crackles as the action escalates but it's the chemistry between Adkin...

Hell or High Water & Trap Door

Stop the press! Who is Peter André? Well, you're about to find out as this week’s show is brought to you from the mind of the fanatical turophile himself. The second Indochina war waged from 1955 to 1975 with U.S. Marines landing on beaches near Da Nang, South Vietnam for the first time in March 1965. The war was politically and ideologically divisive on home soil in Washington and utterly devastating for the troops on the ground as they were largely outmanoeuvred, both sides sustaining terrible...

Summer of 92 & New Legends of Monkey

As the Europeans deify another bunch of hopelessly overpaid man-children so too the Bad Dads cash in with an episode devoted to that most infantile of sports, football. Bad Dad Dan is something of a football fanatic and has a touch of pedigree himself having played football under West Ham's very first attacking full-back/Manager, Syd King in 1902. The beautiful game lit a spark in Dan that could not be extinguished, which is how we end up here almost 120 years later with The Top 5 Movie With Bal...

Midweek Mention... Human Traffic

Justin Kerrigan's HUMAN TRAFFIC is an exploration of a particular late 90's youth culture: the living for the weekend chemical generation whose hedonism was centred around drug taking and pounding basslines in the super clubs of the day. The ridiculously named Jip, Lulu, Koop, Moff and Nina are a a group of wage slave 20 somethings brashly sticking two fingers up to the establishment and embracing all aspects of rave and clubbing culture whilst simultaneously negotiating Monday's come down and e...

Staircases have always played a vital role in cinema; any time our hero or villain needs to ascend or descend a level, the humble stair is there to allow it to happen. Ripe for injecting symbolism into a scene or used metaphorically to show our protagonists character development, the stairs are also a place where fights, chases and sometimes comedy can occur. So join us and go stair-crazy with this weeks Top 5 Set On A Staircase. The legendary 2000 A.D. is a British sci-fi comic which has been a...

Cats & Gabby's Dollhouse

Pussy is the undeniably obvious and deliberately provocative first word that's perfect to use if you have limited time to engage your reader and you'd like them to get to at the least the end of the first sentence of your description. In this part of the overview there originally was a story that ended up with Cats in the plot of Inception but then I realised there was a South Park episode where they did something with sheep and the plot of that movie so, time completely wasted and desperate for...

Moonlight & Disenchantment

The subject of todays Top 5 is one of the great American actors; his collaborations with Martin Scorsese alone have created some of the most celebrated moments and characters in film history. A firm favourite of all of the Bad Dads, it's time we sat down to talk about Robert De Niro. 2016's MOONLIGHT directed by Barry Jenkins and based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue" is this weeks main feature. An indie drama charting the life...

Whiplash & How to Train Your Dragon - Legends

If you have a car and a child, you will be painfully aware that even with the very best intentions it won't be long before the interior of your vehicle is a hoarder’s paradise. Assuming of course that the hoarder in question's idea of paradise includes odd socks, miscellaneous toys, hairbands, half eaten dried fruit and flakes of excrement. I've long worried/fantasised that some of this detritus, a stray water bottle or plastic horse toy say, will somehow become lodged under the brake pedal as I...

Did you know that the origins of frozen desserts are considered obscure? That there are several accounts of their history: some sources even describe ice cream-like foods as originating in Persia as far back as 550 BCE! No? Well why the fuck not? I'm embarrassed for us both. It's right there in the origin section of ice-cream on wikipedia should you ever be desperately short of ideas on how to introduce the Top 5 Ice-Creams in movies. When I was in my early teenage years I really liked the 'Weird Al' Yankovic album "Even Worse". It probably wasn't that great in hindsight, but the teenage me loved it. Then I discovered that Mr Yankovic had made a movie, I had to see it. And I did. I loved UHF all those years ago, but this was released in 1989 and things have moved on quite a bit. Can this movie still make us laugh? Who knows....

Midweek Mention... Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas

FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS sees Terry Gilliam bringing Hunter S. Thompson's Rolling-Stone magazine article-turned book covering the Mint 400 motorcycle race to life. 2 hours of drugs and debauchery, but what about the film?
